Injury may derail Montgomery’s state bid By JARROD ULREY ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Joel Montgomery sat with his hands over his face as he battled to come to grips with what happened during his semifinal match in the Division II sectional boys tennis tournament May 14. The pain the Worthington Christian High School freshman began feeling a few minutes earlier finally had become too much to bear, forcing him to default after losing the first set 7-6 (7-2) of his semifinal to Granville’s Danny Gardner. Montgomery qualified for district by winning three sectional matches May 12 at Columbus School for Girls, but coach Alex Schmidt wasn’t expecting him to compete Friday, May 20, and Saturday, May 21, at Columbus Academy. Even if the pulled muscle in his right leg shortened Montgomery’s season, Schmidt believes the Warriors have reason to be excited for the future considering the success Montgomery had throughout his first prep season. Montgomery missed two weeks of the regular season because of the same injury and went 8-2 overall, with his only other loss coming to three-time Division II state singles qualifier Ian Wagner of Wellington. “He was feeling a lot of weakness about midway through the first set, and I think a lot of it was due to him not being able to play the last couple weeks because of the injury,” Schmidt said. “We’ll

have it tested out, but because he’s so young, we don’t want to risk anything. He was really looking forward to this, but he’s got to take care of himself. “It was different (May 12) because he wasn’t really challenged in any of his matches, but (against Gardner) there were a lot of long rallies and a lot more wear and tear.” At the sectional May 12, winning their first-round match but losing in the second round were junior Reid Smith in singles and the doubles team of Tanner Singleton and Seth Montgomery. The doubles team of Connor Holland and Jonathan Myer advanced to a quarterfinal before losing to Granville’s Ryan Rosinsky and Dylan Sharkey 6-1, 6-2. David Feusse lost to Centennial’s Bogdan Cojocari 6-1, 6-3 in his sectional opener. “I’m really happy with how the (sectional) went,” Schmidt said. “Reid Smith had to retire from his second-round match because of heat exhaustion, but he was fighting through everything. David Feusse drew the No. 4 seed, so he had a tough match. We had a really good showing. My goal was to get everyone one win and they all did except for David.” •The baseball team lost to second-seeded Fredericktown 15-2 in the second round of the Division III district tournament May 12 to finish 10-13. The Warriors opened the district tournament with a 7-1 victory over Grandview on May 10. Against the Freddies, they gave

cluded Nathan Deskins, Ben Garrison, Austin Morgan and Jack Price. “We did play a tough schedule, which helped us gauge the things we needed to work on,” coach Tim Kraynak said. “Our defense seemed to be a strength for most of the season, and as the season progressed we were able to identify three or four key guys on the mound. Quite frankly, we struggled offensively.” Junior Alec Motter was the team’s leading hitter at .403, followed by Bauslaugh (.359), junior Keaton Lovas (.318) and Deskins (.308). Bauslaugh and Lovas both drove in 16 runs. Junior J.C. Ackerman, who gave up one run in six innings in the tournament against Grandview, went 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings. Junior Zach Ackerman was 2-1 with a 4.94 ERA in 22 2/3 innings over 10 games. Also pitching in 10 games were junior Trevor England, Garrison and sophomore Caleb Penney. Other players eligible to return include sophomores Frankie Myers, Jordan Rugg and Clayton Siders and freshman Casey Hamrick. “We competed well, playing in six one-run games and five By Eric George/ThisWeek two-run games against some tough opponents,” Kraynak said. The Warriors’ Clayton Siders rounds third base on his way to scoring a run on May 10 during a 7-1 victory over Grandview in a “We were young as we returned two everyday starters from last Division III district tournament game. year’s squad, which is encourup six runs in the second inning, Dan Bauslaugh, a four-year var- aging for next season.
