juggling their children in multiple sports, it’s difficult to compete with full schedules. But Matoso is not derailed. In the future of CSU Stanislaus he sees a pep band and more community involved. “We’re the only NCAA school in this county, not just in Turlock, but the area,” he says. This is an accomplishment and something he hopes the community will in turn support fully. Ultimately, it’s not just winning that nurtures school spirit. It’s the chemistry and balancing act of pride in educational services, positive school culture, and supportive institutions and the engagement of a community. Having a community coming to events, rooting for student athletes to succeed in their sports and in the classroom is part of the formula to nurture school spirit and a campus’ learning culture.
