“Klutz is an attempt to prove to myself that being clumsy is normal and only worth a good laugh”

talks to us about her series ‘Klutz’

CI: Tell us a little bit about yourself. AK: My name is Aleksandra, I am 23 and I am a London-based photographer & art director from Vilnius, Lithuania. I like minimalism, the colour pink, and awkwardness in fashion. I am a keen traveller and movie-lover and I always wear red lipstick and a pair of funny glasses.

Gaining inspiration from personal experience (recording my own clumsiness on a daily basis) as well as cinema, I have restaged some of the situations, focusing a lot on mis-en-scene, which resulted in ironical yet powerful and emotional imagery. As a young woman in her early twenties, I find this research highly personal and important.

CI: Tell us how you got into photography? AK: It all started in early teenage times with an old film camera that one of my friends wanted to throw away but gave to me instead. At the time i would carry it with me everywhere proudly, feeling arty and cool, capturing friends as well as creating romantic visual scenarios. The decision to make it a career as well as my transition to fashion happened after I moved to London. I have always been fond of not just capturing moments, but of creating and directing visual stories myself, focusing on mis-en-scene and sculpting my photographs thoroughly. This is what fashion is all about a scenario and a fiction, so I thought that fashion industry was the most natural place to be.

CI: What inspired you to shoot this series? AK:Over a year ago, I stumbled upon Julia Fullerton Batten’s work, and her pictures were the first step towards building up the project. In her work Julia explores adolescence, growing up, youth, insecurity and awkwardness. It initiated my thinking about my own life, my ongoing transition from a teenager into an adult and the things i am insecure about. I have always been very clumsy, constantly bumping into table corners, having my lipstick smudged and forgetting umbrellas in trains, and despite always trying to be ironic about it i secretly treated it as a sort of weakness of mine, something that sometimes made me really upset with myself. Klutz is an attempt to prove to myself that being clumsy is normal and only worth a good laugh. The movies part came later during research - 50’s-60’s cinema is often my main visual reference and when I paid attention to the way women are represented in some films, all links and pieces came together in a picture much bigger than my own self-reflection.

CI: Tell us about your series Klutz. AK: Klutz is an editorial exploring a common stereotype that women are generally clumsier than men. This cliché is widely used by filmmakers when building up a female character – sometimes not being able to hire an imperfect or actress, but still having a need to give the character some flaws, and sometimes simply not bothering thinking the character through, they often make the woman a klutz.

CI: How do you think this stereotype of women being cast as “clumsy” in movies effects the way that woman might see themselves? AK: Same way like the ‘stupid blonde’ ‘manic pixie dream girl’ cliché does. All these character stereotypes contribute to both men and women tending to classify and label one another and trying to fit into certain frames by applying a set of characteristics towards their identity. At the same time, the ‘cute clumsy girl’ is much more real that other ‘character clichés’ and probably not the worst role model. She is often very easy-going and down to earth, and is the girl that can allow to laugh at herself and not to be sexy all the time. However, like the rest, it is usually quite superficial and commonly not developed further than it is required to show her relationship with the main character (that is often a male/ boyfriend). To sum up, none of these clichés should be taken too seriously.

CI: Do you feel that the movie industry as well as fashion industries are moving into a more empowering direction for women or do you feel as though there still isn’t enough awareness surrounding how woman are portrayed in the media, movies, magazines etc.? AK: Of course, the female image mass media is selling is still often way too perfectioned and is usually far from reality. It is in fact a part of a game, and I sometimes play that game too, smoothing the model’s skin a bit more for the sake of a good picture. However, I feel like there is a change in all the fields: slowly but surely media becomes a bit more liberal and starts to accept and celebrate a woman the way she is. I think Internet and social media play a massive role in this change - fashion becomes more interactive, it becomes interested in individuality and imperfections. Moreover, celebrity feminism trend became huge last year and that

plays a massive impact too raising awareness and inspiring everyone around. Brands and magazines release more and more shoots that are almost unretouched (like post-pregnancy Lara Stone for System or a recent Kate Moss editorial in Vogue Italia), feature older women without trying to look too young and not advertising anti-ageing creams (Jessica Lange for Marc Jacobs beauty or recent Celine campaign for instance), and are not only sticking to skinny body standard. One does not have to be perfect to be on trend anymore. There are still lots to be worked on, but overall I think it is a good and healthy direction Perfection is boring.

CI: What do you feel you have learned by creating this series? AK: I think Klutz series was a great internal change in the direction I work in – I have learned to celebrate the imperfect, to admire the awkward and not to be scared to make a fool of myself. CI: How do you want others to perceive the series? AK: With a great amount of irony : ) CI: What are your creative hopes and dreams for the future? AK: I feel like am still in the very beginning of my creative path, so at the moment I feel like traveling a lot, gathering up lots of crazy ideas and bringing them to life and being playful with fashion. I am also getting involved with moving image – after directing a couple of fashion films, I am now learning to film & edit myself. My sneaky creative dreams would be to learn
