Emily wins Young Achiever Award Colours Of Isaac photography open category winner “Blue and Gold” by Megan Gray - captures a stunning sunset near Moranbah. (story page 5 )

Emily Clarke with Mayor Anne Baker, Chairman Mackay Tourism Board, Paul O’Connor and Cr Geoff Bethel.

Energetic, motivated and talented – that’s how Isaac Regional Council’s Emily Clarke was described as she won the QantasLink MackayIsaac Tourism Young Achiever Award. The branding and graphic design officer based in Clermont had worked hard over 12 months to build the region’s tourism profile through high quality, appealing design work and photography. “Hopefully my work will attract more people to experience this diverse region – it has a lot to offer,” she said.

Silver Award for the Unique Accommodation category went to the 151 year old Nebo Hotel. Mayor Anne Baker said Emily’s work in branding and design is extremely important to position the region within the larger tourism industry. “I also congratulate Nebo Hotel owners Ben and Peggy Michelmore who are committed to our tourism industry and preserve an historical treasure. The Isaac Region services many tourists especially along the great inland way and coastal strip.”

Disaster can befall you at any time ``If it ever comes to that’’, I said nodding towards a group of tourists being shepherded through Madrid’s Porta del Sol by their guide, ``shoot me.’’ ``The day might come when you are old and will appreciate the security and convenience of a group,’’ my partner replied. ``Never! One clean shot,’’ I said reaching for the Spanish coffee which was so strong it was making my eyes water, ``between the eyes while I’m sleeping.’’ There’s a perverse thrill to be had from traveling independently due to the knowledge that disaster could befall you at any time. Flights can be canceled, trains derailed, hire cars stolen, hotel rooms burgled, pockets picked, passports lost – we know all this and still we refuse the relative safety of a guided tour. On this trip, warned of the dexterity of Spanish pickpockets I had invested in a shoulder holster, one designed not for holding a gun but cash and credit cards. This meant reaching into my armpit whenever I wanted to buy anything, not always an inviting prospect on a sweaty Madrid afternoon. It was one, however, that proved its worth when a dark eyed senorita walked up to me and placed a red rose between the buttons of my shirt. As she did this her hand brushed past the pockets of my jeans and I suddenly knew that if my euros and cards hadn’t been tucked securely under my armpit then in that instant, they would have been gone. Realising that my pockets were empty she frowned, snatched back the rose and disappeared into the crowd. New city, blue skies and a map – the perfect start to the

perfect day for the independent traveler. It does however, help if your towering faith in your own sense of direction is alloyed with a touch of humility. Neither my partner nor I are so blessed and refusing to concede we could have misread the map, spent several hours marching in the general direction of France rather than towards the centre of Madrid.

MEAL TIME CAN BE CHALLENGING! Meal time for independent travelers can be challenging as you wander strange streets, convinced that the next restaurant will be slightly more inviting than the last. Having learnt from experience that restaurants recommended in guide books are universally dreadful, we are inveterate meal time wanderers. The temptation here can be to pause for a few drinks at the various bars you pass in search of the perfect dining place. We have done this on occasion and awoken the next morning unable to remember whether we ever got around to eating. Sometimes, however, you get lucky as we did when in Madrid we stumbled upon The Mushroom Restaurant. It appealed on two levels – we loved mushrooms and it was the only restaurant in the country which did not claim to have been patronised by Ernest Hemingway. We were led out the back to a cave-like room and plates of mushrooms smothered in garlic and oil appeared with a jug of red wine at about the same time as a group of Swiss football fans, in town to see their team get beaten by Real Madrid.

They spoke English, were thirsty and much revelry ensued late into the night. ``You wouldn’t have a night like that on a guided tour, would you?’’ asked my partner the next morning. `` I think not’’ I said, wondering why Spanish hangovers felt exactly the same as Australian ones. In Barcelona I was dragged, protesting mightily but ineffectually, to a flamenco performance. ``It will be packed with tour groups’’, I whined. ``There’s free wine included in the ticket price,’’ said my partner. ``Lead on!’’ I replied. It was, as it happened, an enjoyable night until an Australian tour group weaved into the room. More than a few of its number had obviously supped deeply on the gratis wine as evidenced when, with the performers in mid-flamenco, one of them rose to his feet and yelled ``Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi, Oi Oi!’’ I turned to my partner and raised an eyebrow. ``I know’’, she said, `` A clean shot. Between the eyes. While you’re sleeping.’’

Support network for Coal facility “mired in controversy” Moranbah traders by Sherry Barnes

MTA member Lee Booth, Treasurer Marie Booth, President Trehan Stenton. A free confidential support network created by local Business In Moranbah and the wider Isaac Region is offered to help businesses who are facing challenges during the current economic climate. Trehan Stenton, President of Moranbah Traders Association said they are committed to help the Business Community help each other. “Some of our members have managed to ride out downturns and they want to give back to the local business community a few words of advice, people to talk to, who could help or just act as a sounding board.”

This initiative is offered free and confidential and aimed at providing support to ensure local business remains sustainable for the benefit of the entire Isaac region. Expressions of interest in volunteering as a mentor or friend, or from those who want to connect with a local business for support can contact Trehan at trehan1@gmail.com. Support agencies including Beyond Blue can assist with issues related to depression and anxiety, phone 1300 22 4636.

GVK Hancock corrects misinformation Josh Euler, Manager Corporate Affairs for GVK Hancock has responded to reports claimed to be incorrect including that India’s future energy demand impacts the viability of GVK’s projects. “GVK Hancock is currently marketing coal from its lead project, the Alpha coal project into South East Asia and has no plans to market product into India. We remain firmly committed to the development of our Galilee Basin coal assets and are continuing to develop our projects to a point where construction can commence. We clearly wouldn’t be doing that if we thought the projects weren’t viable,” was part of Mr Euler’s response. Also incorrect were claims that impacts to groundwater in the Galilee Basin haven’t been properly assessed. “We’ve invested tens of millions of dollars on the most extensive and rigorous environmental

Contact Us

assessments for the Galilee Basin projects and have met all regulatory requirements.” “The recent groundwater recommendations from the Land Court do not raise any new environmental obligations under the project’s existing environmental approvals.” Mr Euler also refuted the claim that GVK Hancock is disposing of all its water licences as its projects are not going ahead. “This is not true. In the past we secured allocations of excess water supply in the region, but through ongoing planning refinement we have reduced the amount of water we now require.” “So it makes no business sense to continue paying holding costs for water supply allocations that we no longer need and are only continuing with licensing for the allocation that we require.

Misinterpretation has become an art form “Managing dust associated with coal mining and transport is an industry priority, recently illustrated

with the voluntary application of polymer veneers to coal wagons travelling through central and southern Queensland,” said QRC Executive, Michael Roche. “The misinterpretation of the National Pollutant Inventory has become an art form for activists since its debut in the mid- 1990s.” NPI data shows what is released from an emission source but whether it causes pollution to air, land or water depends on other factors – amount of substance emitted, where it is emitted, weather conditions at the time and topography of the land. “This important qualification will never appear in any statement from Lock The Gate which has replaced Friends Of The Earth as the chief promoter of health scare campaigns on behalf of the anti-coal movement,” said Mr Roche.

Burrum Coalfest proves a winner Last year’s inaugural Burrum Coal Discovery Festival – Coalfest in Howard was Winner of the Fraser Coast Australia Day Events Award, plus a finalist in the Queensland Regional Events. Central Queensland Spokesperson for Lock The Gate Alliance, Ellie Smith (pictured right) said the coal loading facility 2.5km from the centre of Moura, handling up to 3.5 million tonnes of coal every year had been mired in controversy since first proposed. “We know these facilities create large dust plumes every time a truck off-loads its coal or a train is filled with coal, but this facility has been approved with an assessment of generic data rather than local weather records,” said Ms Smith. “The health of the people of Moura is being put at risk by a “develop at all costs” mentality. This is the deputy-premier’s own electorate yet he seems to be pushing the coal industry’s interests ahead of those of the people of Moura – why?” she asked. “Can Mr Seeney give a 100% assurance to residents that their health and that of their children will not be impacted by coal dust pollution?” She added that data from the National Pollutant Inventory shows Queensland is the most polluted state with eight of the nation’s top 10 dust emitting coal mines located here.

Making it work when you work away That’s the name of the new online induction tool launched by the awardwinning team at Mining Family Matters, to boost the emotional resilience of the growing population of FIFO workers. Creator Alicia Ranford (pictured) said it offers proactive advice from a psychologist on key issues – setting goals, overcoming mood swings, avoiding arguments about how R&R is spent, staying connected without 24/7 phone access. “It’s designed to forewarn employees about the most common emotional pressures faced by FIFO workers and arm them with simple strategies to overcome issues as they arise, Ms Ranford said. “Everyone benefits, the worker, their family and their company because an employee who’s happy with life back home is more likely to be focussed and

productive on the job. She said whenever the website runs workshops for FIFO workers, they say how great it would be to get the information to all employees up on site. “That isn’t always practical given the remoteness of many operations, so we decided to create an online training tool to help workers any time, anywhere. The induction tool was created in conjunction with international online training company, Health Safety Works and specifically tailored to ensure information is relevant to FIFO workers whether single, in a relationship or have children. The launch follows Mining Family Matters’ suite of guides including the original Survival Guide For Mining Families with Australian sales now

Bicycle Queensland’s views on new laws CEO, Ben Wilson said both the Parliamentary Committee and State Government have recognised there is a pressing need to do more for safety of bike riders. “Now we have new laws that increase penalties for bicycle riders and drivers alike to make us all share roads more easily, he said. “Cycling is a great activity and is a safe, fun, healthy way to get around. We don’t want to lose sight of this fact as too much negativity is being raised through this reform process. Ben said the key behaviours sought by the law changes are pretty simple, logical and unchanged for 100 or more years. “Always overtake bicycles carefully and leave them plenty of space, and riders – obey the road rules. For the best internationally evidenced safety outcome, Queensland also needs all levels of government to provide dedicated cycling infrastructure so people can ride from A to B without sharing narrow roads with motor vehicles.

and holidaymaking communities a great destination.”

The Village currently comprises 186 sites made up of six deluxe villas, two-bedroom and studio villas, cabins and sites; two amenities blocks, camp kitchen and barbecue, pool and spa, tennis court and playground.

No surprises at interest rates hold This is the 10th consecutive month that RBA has left the cash rate at the historically low level of 2.5% with Mortgage Choice saying it’s no surprise given that consumer sentiment plummeted in May. “59% of Australians say they expect their family finances to worsen over the coming year as a result of the Budget” said Jessica Darnbrough.

“Leading up to the Federal Budget, economists predicted interest rates to rise in the near future but this may no longer be the case. Instead the RBA is likely to leave them on hold for some time to wait and see what happens to consumer sentiment.” Loan Market Director, Mark De Martino said the RBA is doing its part to bring confidence to the market, pointing out that two years ago the rate was 3.5%, and that one percent drop was helping consumers pay off their home faster. He said RBA Governor, Glenn Stevens made it clear it was hard to determine not just when the next rate movement would be, but if it would be up or down.

Mr De Martino predicted the July and August decisions would also be to hold , which would leave the RBA cash rate on hold for the longest period since 2006.

Fisher Crest hits Gladstone market Gladstone Affordable Housing, a subsidiary of Brisbane based not for profit developer, BHC has launched an architectural masterplanned development, Fisher Crest with construction set to commence in July. Fisher Crest will deliver 32 new homes, comprising two bedroom apartment configurations and three bedroom villas, of which only nine are available for purchase from $360,000; the remaining properties to be retained and managed by the developer. BHC Chief Operating Officer Samantha Evens said Fisher Crest has been designed with first home buyers and those looking to downsize in mind. “There has been a lot of talk about vacancy rates in Gladstone escalating recently due to an injection of new housing supply on the back of the mining boom; however the majority of development has ceased in the immediate area and vacancies are being

absorbed.”

Ms Evans said Fisher Crest is hitting the Gladstone market at the right time with BHC a leader in the development of affordable housing with an emphasis on design and liveability.

Environmentally sustainable features have been incorporated to facilitate less energy and water usage, boasting a six star energy rating and Enviro Development Certification. The development is expected to reach completion in mid-2015.

“Residents will have access to an Olympic size swimming pool with water park, outdoor gymnasium and fitness trail all within walking distance, plus tennis, croquet and bowls clubs literally on the doorstep,” said Ms Evans. For more information on BHC, phone 3307 3000 or www.bhcl.com.au

Investors list top challenges The First Time Investor Survey conducted by Mortgage Choice revealed their top three challenges in purchasing their first property were: •finding the right one •choosing the right investment strategy • saving a deposit. More than 60% of those surveyed preferred small houses or units because they believed they were in higher demand. Other factors of importance were • right suburb and street • handy to amenities and entertainment • infrastructure planned for the area • population growth of the area. Spokesperson Jessica Darnbrough said the

results were surprising with just 15.3% saying that saving the deposit was their biggest challenge. “It seems location is everything. A property near necessary amenities including restaurants and local transport is likely to attract more tenants.”

“Today’s first time investors are switched on,” said Ms Darnbrough. “Despite the fact that the property market is running hot just now and there’s a lot of competition from other buyers, it seems first time investors are happy to bide their time until they find the perfect property – they are a savvy bunch.”

New app for ordering scripts Queensland families now have an easier way to manage their medicines with the launch of a new smart phone app called eRx Express in pharmacies in Brisbane, Surfers Paradise, Gold and Sunshine Coasts and Toowoomba. eRx Express is a free app that lets people scan and pre-order their script medicines wherever they are and whatever they are doing, for pick up at a time and date that suits. The app is part of eRx Script Exchange’s national network which lets GPs and pharmacists exchange electronic prescriptions safely and securely. Pharmacist, Jason Bratuskins, eRx Express said “We all know how hard it can be waiting in queues with small children, or when people are sick, and this new app makes a real difference by reducing waiting times and letting people choose the most convenient time to collect their script medicines.”

Greg Jones ( Santos GLNG) James Campbell (Thiess) Professor Arun Sharma ( QUT) AlessioTesta ( Saipem).

by Sherry Barnes The Narrows Crossing Tunnel constructed by Thiess for Saipem Australia and Santos GLNG has won the 2014 Queensland Premier’s Innovation in Sustainable Technologies Award. The 4.3km undersea tunnel between the mainland and Curtis Island off Gladstone was recognised because it provides a conduit to install the gas transmission pipeline without disturbing the sea floor. The project was also runner-up for the overall Premier’s Sustainability Award. Accepting the award, Project Manager, James Campbell said everyone on the team was incredibly

conscious of the significance of the region. “The award is fitting recognition of the innovative tunnel solution which eliminated the environmental disturbance associated with alternative methods such as dredging or trenching,” he said.

Pick up at a preferred date and time. (the paper script needs to be taken into the pharmacy at collection)

Constructed using a Tunnel Boring Machine named Rose-Ella by the children of Rosella Park School, the project employed 75 people, requiring more than 420,000 man hours to complete.

The new app is now live in pharmacies in Airlie Beach, Brisbane, Bundaberg, Coolum, Gracemere, Gympie, Maroochydore, Noosa, Noosaville, Peregian, Rockhampton, Southside, Surfers Paradise, Toowoomba, Wyalla and Yeppoon.

The TBM excavated 55,000 cubic metres of earth which was used by the Gladstone Regional Council to rehabilitate an ash pond associated with a coal-fired power station.

eRx Express is a free app for iPhone, Android and Windows smart phones. It can be downloaded now at the App Store for iPhone, Google Play for Android, and Windows Phone for Microsoft.

It’s ideal for people who are busy, or who might need to plan a trip to a pharmacy, whether because they live regionally, are socially isolated, need the support of a carer, or have other complications such as chronic health issues. The free app has three easy steps: - Scan scripts, anywhere, anytime, using the QR code that appears on the prescription. - Submit the script or scripts to the pharmacy

Text Ah…reminiscing. Local bloke in Alpha says there’s no sign of any new coal mines in the area just now. He remembers when Lang Hancock paid a visit 40 years ago, having a chat on the verandah of the “Wood Pub” one of two in the main street. Lang was saying there’d soon be a coal mine near Alpha and urged the young blokes having a beer to sign up for a job – some of them are grandfathers now and wish they’d taken his advice. ***************************** Coastline Newspapers, publishers of this Coalfields Express printed their latest Tourist Qld paper in New Zealand where they were delivered to thousands of homes. Bundles of papers for Bundaberg were posted from NZ on Tuesday, arriving at the Coastline office on the Friday – quicker than some letter delivery in Australia, which is in danger of being restricted to only two letterbox delivery days a week.

Servicing both leisure and corporate travellers, Four Points is equipped with an in-house restaurant, a casual street-level café and a 300sqm roof top function space. The hotel’s central city location puts it just a hop skip and a jump from the bustling Queen Street Mall, lush Botanic Gardens and burgeoning suitand-tie bar scene along Eagle Street. www.starwoodhotels.com/fourpoints

Ava, a page 3 girl in 1977

We came across an old Sydney paper dated April 24 1977. The TV Guide listed top programs that night as The Duchess Of Duke Street, Hawaii Five O, Ask The Leyland Brothers, Six Million Dollar Man and the premiere of eventual block buster and multi-award winner, Roots. Popular TV critic, Veritas said in his column this was the worst made TV series ever and not to bother watching!) They still had a Page 3 girl (remember them?) in 1977 – she was Ava, aged 21, probably a grandmother now. Speaking of Page 3 girls – would any readers like to see them return to grace our pages, or would that be too crass and sexist in this politically correct, nanny-state environment we seem to live in these days?

“Drop over for a drink”…you’ve gotta be kidding!

Let us know, because Ferret knows a good Page 3 girl when he sees one!

Unique boarding offering Fraser Island – a fun learning environment at Clayfield College The world’s largest sand pit makes a pretty interesting outdoor classroom – there are 1840 square kms of sand tracks to explore; it is one of the only places that rainforest grows in sand at elevations of 200 metres; it supports a fresh water aquifer that is approximately 40 times the size of Sydney Harbour and it is home to Australia’s purest strain of dingo. Kingfisher Bay Resort’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Kerry Brough, said interpretation of the environment is the key tenet of the resort’s environmental philosophy – so the development of a formal curriculum-based education program was the next logical step for the resort group. “By combining the knowledge base of our Resort Ranger team with teacher’s curriculum requirements, we are able to deliver a custommade program for students covering topics from Biology and Environmental disciplines as well as

An 11-storey, 198-room motel development and food premises has been approved by Gladstone Regional Council across four separate CBD allotments in Goondoon Street. Regional Strategy portfolio spokesperson Cr Matt Burnett said the motel will include a restaurant and bar, function and conference rooms and 143 car parking spaces. “A key component will be a public piazza on the corner of Goondoon and Yarroon Streets with public art integrated as part of Council’s requirements under the CBD/Waterfront Revitalisation Plan, he said. Cr Burnett said the application was originally lodged as an Integrated Tourist Resort Facility last August, but later changed to the current application as a result of intended use for the development.

Dream it- Plan it- Build it Building your own home? Top tips from the experts • Estimate your budget • Always allow for costs not outlined in the base price. There can always be unforeseen things under the soil when they prepare the base, changes you wish to make during the processes etc. • Research projects in your area to ensure before you commence building you will have minimal delays with council. • Before you purchase a block of land you will need to check for potential problems such as easements, proneness to flooding and if the council has any restrictions on style of home built. • It is ideal for you to have found a home that can be built on the block if a spec home. • Ideally the builder you have selected will have completed homes within your local council and will understand what regulations apply to the building of a house. It’s imperative you understand the regulations prior to submitting a development application to your local council. • With display homes ask if you can change either internal walls or modify part of the design. Some builders will make modifications and others won’t. • When visiting the site take as many pictures as you can. It’s great for nostalgic reasons and practical ones such as finding locations of pipes, wires etc.if needed. • Always ask questions to find out as much as you can about what your options are, what will happen and when.

Builders remain optimistic Master Builders’ latest Survey of Industry Conditions revealed despite a slight drop in confidence over the March quarter and a softening in the construction work pipeline, builders remain optimistic about what lies ahead. Master Builders maintains its positive outlook for the industry for the rest of this year and beyond, and welcome the Queensland Government’s plan for the sale of assets and the channelling of 25% of this income into capital expenditure.

Construction Q welcomed State Government’s plan to develop a long term blueprint for Queensland’s building and construction industry is a step towards a stronger, more resilient and innovative industry, according to Executive Director of Master Builders, Paul Bidwell. Like us on Coastline Newspapers

He said the Construction Q announcement is welcomed by industry as an opportunity to work with government to shape the policies that ensure long term growth. “We will be looking to use the forum to address issues that impact both the housing and commercial sectors. The government has already made progress via planning system reforms and the scrapping of mandatory regulations for water tanks and greenhouse efficient hot water systems, but we need to explore this landscape further,” said Mr Bidwell. “We will be urging this group of leaders to be conscious that builders are at the end of the supply chain and we can’t always be left carrying the burden of costs and change.”

People from all over the world descend on the Sapphire Gemfields each year to experience fossicking firsthand and try their luck to find the ultimate gem discovery. If it’s treasure that you’re seeking or the opportunity to experience a real-life mining town, the Sapphire Gemfields has it all with its array of gemshops, galleries, jewellers, underground mines and digging areas.

Gemshops, galleries, jewellers and locally created cottage industries are abundant in the area. There’s no better place to purchase an Australian-mined and cut sapphire or quality sapphire jewellery. Gem-cutters are available to facet your very own find, and jewellers will set them into valuable family heirlooms to be treasured forever. The area is rich in history, character and charm, and just like digging for buried treasure, if you look beyond the surface, you’ll be surprised what you can find. Many of the residents today were once tourists that came here and never left. The lifestyle of the Sapphire Gemfields today is very laid back and peaceful, and visitors are always made to feel welcome. A visit to the Sapphire Gemfields is sure to be an experience you will never forget.

Anakie Anakie is positioned at the Sapphire Gemfields ‘crossroads’ along the Capricorn Highway, 44 kilometres west of Emerald. Visit the historic Anakie Hotel which had to be partially rebuilt in 1971 after a disgruntled patron blew out the front section with gelignite. The local primary school and police station are in Anakie as well as a bed and breakfast, caravan park, and hotel/ motel.

There are many ways to explore the Sapphire Gemfields. Why not take a guided tour of a walk-in underground mine or go on a tag-along digging tour? Book a self-drive fossicking tour with maps and all the necessary equipment, so that you can explore the back tracks of the mining areas in your own vehicle. Visit a fossicking park, where you can learn all about fossicking. There you can buy a bucket of sapphire ‘wash’, learn to seive it, and recognise sapphires in the rough. It’s enjoyable, educational, and you can even take home bags of sapphire wash to extend your holiday experience. Gemshops & Galleries

Sapphire With a name like Sapphire, it’s not hard to guess what can be found here. There is a sense of fun and adventure fossicking for your own sapphires. Mined since the late 1800s, the moon-like landscape is as much a part of the lifeblood of Sapphire as the rich treasures in the earth. Be sure to visit the historic Piano Tuners Grave at Retreat Creek. Fossicking areas in Sapphire (where you are allowed to camp and dig) include ‘Graves Hill’ and ‘Big Bessie’. If you love a photo opportunity, then ‘The Big Ring’, ‘Big Spanner’ and ‘Big Pick and Shovel’ can all be found in and around Sapphire, so keep an eye out for these fun icons. Sapphire, which was originally called Sapphiretown, has developed into the services hub of the Sapphire Gemfields.

Rubyvale The quaint town of Rubyvale offers comfortable accommodation within a hotel or cabin as well as holiday units and caravan parks. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the gem and jewellery shops, and refresh at the cafe or pub. The Australian Miners Historic Museum houses relics from the Sapphire Gemfields’ colourful history. Marvel at the tiny tunnels, called “tummy tunnels” used by the pioneer miners. Middle Ridge is the closest fossicking area to the township, plus there are numerous fossicking parks. Fossicking parks allow people of all ages and fitness to join the fun of finding a sapphire. With the digging work already done, visitors can buy a bucket of wash and start searching straight away. Friendly staff are on hand to provide advice and guidance on how to sieve and sort for sapphires. If you don’t find your own gem, the local gem galleries and shops offer stunning sapphire jewellery for sale. A new observatory offers visitors the chance to view the beautiful galaxy of stars in the outback night sky. Rubyvale also has a post office, laundromat, and a general store with fuel.

Waltzing Matilda story coming home The song’s birthplace of Winton is the location for the new Banjo and Matilda movie to be filmed this year with permanent sets including a homestead and shearing sheds to be built. Producer Bill Leimbach originally decided to use Broken Hill in New South Wales but said the soul of the story belongs to Western Queensland. Potential sponsorship from supporters including major mining companies could be channelled into creating a new Banjo and Matilda tourist experience. In 1895, Andrew Barton “Banjo” Paterson, bush poet and journalist stayed with friends at Dagworth Station near Winton where he wrote his most famous poem, Waltzing Matilda, and the rest as they say, is history. His image is on the Australian $10 note with, as part of the copy-protection microprint, the text of the poem itself.

Everyone has good old fashioned fun here - well that’s what the whales and their calves will be having while you’re going to be awestruck and amazed at their antics. Each year an estimated 8000 whales migrate from Antarctica to the warm islands of the Whitsundays to breed. However it’s between late July and early November on their return to the south that mothers bring their calves to Hervey Bay to frolic and say hello to tourists. Choosing a vessel – the fleet at Urangan Boat Harbour offers a diverse range of choice with underwater observation rooms, audio technology and qualified marine experts. From double-storey cruisers to twin-hulled catamarans the different sized vessels let you decide between an intimate experience and full-on excitement. You can make a day of it or head out for a morning or afternoon tour. The size and facilities of the vessels vary – what is assured are highly experienced crews who are well

versed in whale habits and other wildlife that you might see in the bay including dolphins and turtles. Hervey Bay offers an unrivalled network of experienced, passionate and dedicated whale watching operators with guaranteed sightings. Whale welfare is paramount. Crews work to a strict code of conduct and although they stop the boats short of the pods, curious whales routinely approach, swimming right up to say Hello and introduce their calves.

Fishing

Jetting around Mooloolaba

with Foxie BY JOHN FOX

Winter is well and truly here so put away the barra and jack gear as it is time to target some other species for the next couple of months in our estuaries. There’s plenty to choose with Salmon, Jew, grunter, flathead, whiting and bream, just to name a few. For grunter and bream, fish the back of the creeks on the big tides and for the best results use fresh prawn bait. If you are after a feed of whiting, fish the incoming tide as it pushes up over the yabbie beds. The best bait here of course is freshly dug yabbies. Over the years I have found the bigger whiting come from fishing the shallow water where the yabbie holes are close to mangrove roots. When digging your yabbies keep an eye out for fresh flathead lays in the sand. These are teardrop in shape and are left from the flathead when they bury themselves while waiting to ambush their prey. These sandbars with flathead lays are well worth flicking lures over when the tide is in, soft plastics in Nuclear Chicken colour or hard bodies in a pink colour are the most productive.

Give the crabs a go Although crabbing closes down in the winter if you’re out fishing you might as well throw in a few pots. Try setting them in the deeper holes of the estuaries or close to some rocky outcrop for the best results. Fresh fish frames are the best bait but if your have a bait holder in your pot, chicken wings or necks soaked in tuna oil works well and is a cheap source of bait. Salmon are in nearly all the creeks at this time of year and make sure the bait is fresh herring or prawn. If you are keen on chasing a barra try casting lures around the drains as the water exits them on the run out tide. The barra will be sitting waiting in ambush for the bait fish as they move out with the receding tide. Offshore schoolie and Spanish mackerel should be on the prowl. For the Spanish trolling skirted lures, lures like the rapala CD18 in the red head colour or gar rigged on ganged hooks is always a good way to catch a feed. ********************* Winter is the best time in central Queensland to get amongst one of our favourite fish, the red emperor This time of year the reefs and bommies offshore attract these great red fish. The best part about fishing for red emperor is the “by catch”, species like yellow sweeties, snapper and big red throat and Nannygai are all caught while chasing emperor and are all great eating fish. Slab baits of fish flesh or fresh squid are the best baits. and a rig with a heavy sinker dropped to the bottom, than wind it up a bit from the bottom a bit and hang on. All in all fishing should be great over the next month so get out there, relax, explore and enjoy the great fishing Queensland has to offer.
