DRK Editorial

BACK TO LEARNING – SAFE DRIVING & RIDING With the coming of September, it’s back to school for students, marking the end of summer. Back to books and back to learning. DRK Magazine would like to remind all drivers and riders to slow down and be mindful of school and playground zones. So many times, I see drivers speeding through a school or playground zone; this is a disaster waiting to happen. Rather than speeding, leave 5 minutes earlier for your commute. Late July and August were busy times for the entire DRK team. We were honoured to be invited to two great events: the exclusive Aston Martin Designed to be Driver Tour event and the Ducati 821 launch party. At both of these events, we had the chance to get up close and personal with models from two of the best manufacturers in the world. The summer months also meant time for test drives, and in this issue, we feature extended test drives and rides of the 2014 Ducati 899 Panigale, 2014 BMW 535d and 2014 Ducati Hyperstrada. It’s impressive how far technology has come in the past 20 years. Luxury options before, like traction control, ABS, and stability control, are now standard on most automobiles and motorcycles. Even though we all know oil is important for our motor vehicle engines, many do not know what the numbers 5W30 or 10W30 mean. Our science expert explains oil grades and viscosity in simple terms. In addition, we get expert advice from Charles Carvalho about the importance of proper wheel alignment. This issue also includes the launch of our new Lifestyle sections. Read about the top golf courses in BC and new trends in ladies’ fashion. We will be adding to these sections in future issues. As always, there is lots of news, views, and other articles in this issue. As always, we welcome your feedback and we encourage you to visit our webpage, www.drkmag.com and like our Facebook page by searching for DRK – Desi Road Kings.

Elon Musk Hints at New Tesla Car

Latest

Buzz OCTOBER 2014

Chevrolet’s New 2015 Corvette Z06 is Fastest-ever GM Car Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk started a flurry of speculation on Wednesday after saying it is “about time to unveil the D and something else”, with an accompanying photo mentioning the upcoming date of Oct. 9. It wasn’t immediately what either the “D” or “something else” referred to, but the electric car maker has been widely expected to reveal more details soon on its next car model, which is believed to be the first small sedan aimed at the normal car-buying public. Currently, the company offers a high-end sports coupe called the Model S, and a forthcoming SUV — the Model X — with base model prices starting at about $70,000 US each. Musk added more fuel to the speculative fire later in the day when he tweeted that the wording of his original tweet was unintentional, but adding “Glad I didn’t mention the other letter.” Tesla is believed to be working on an all-electric car that would be more affordable. Tesla’s shares gained about three per cent on the news to trade at $246.38. The stock is up about 60 per cent so far this year, after more than quadrupling in value in 2013.

GM Issues 3 New Recalls, 642,035 Vehicles Affected In September, General Motors announced three new recalls affecting nearly 650,000 vehicles from various brands. The first one involves 430,550 Cadillac SRX (2010-2015) and Saab 9-4X (2011-2012) crossovers whose rear sway bar may not have been properly tightened during assembly. Three related accidents making two people injured have been reported so far. The second recall affects 93,834 Chevrolet Spark hatchbacks which could suffer from rust issues. GM is also recalling 117,651 Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC vehicles with faulty chassis control modules. The problem could cause an electrical short that could lead to an engine stall, an engine that fails to start, or the loss of the trailer brake in vehicles that are equipped with that function. More specifically, the list includes: 2013-2014 Cadillac CTS, Escalade and Escalade ESV; 2013-2014 Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe; 2013-2014 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL; 2013-2014 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia; 2013-2014 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana; 2013-2014 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD; 2013-2014 Chevrolet Impala.

General Motors says a new high-performance version of the Chevrolet Corvette can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in under three seconds. The 2015 Corvette ZO6 is the fastest car GM has ever made. The company says it can hit 60 mph in 2.95 seconds and can finish a quarter-mile in just under 11 seconds. It can reach 127 mph in one-quarter mile. GM spokesman Monte Doran says GM believes it to be the first front-engine, rearwheel-drive production car to break the three-second barrier. The Z06 that achieved the times is equipped with an eightspeed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. It has a supercharged V8 engine that puts out 650 horsepower. The Z06 goes on sale early next year and will cost just shy of $80,000.

Jennifer Lopez’s brand new car damaged Jennifer Lopez’s brand new car was damaged on Saturday after an alleged drunk driver crashed into its rear end. The On the Floor hitmaker was waiting at a traffic light with her pal Leah Remini when the other motorist hit her vehicle from behind. Lopez took on Instagram.com to detail the incident and assured fans she and Remini were not injured, writing, “Sitting at a light, Riding high right before some drunk fool rear ended us in my new whip (car)!!! Thank god everyone ok!!!” The singer/actress had earlier posted a snap of her children, who were also in the car at the time of the crash on California’s Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. According to police records, the other driver took off after the accident. Cops apprehended him a short distance away after J.Lo described his pick-up truck. He was arrested for DUI and hit and run. Ford Creates 1,000 New Jobs at Oakville Assembly Plant

Dragons’ Den Star’s Porsche Goes Up in Flames at Gas Station

By Maryam Shah, Toronto Sun

Ford Canada today announced that 1,000 hourly jobs will be created at its Oakville assembly plant in Ontario to produce the all-new 2015 Ford Edge, which will go on sale early next year. Through a $700 million investment, Oakville is now one of Canada’s most competitive and advanced global manufacturing plants, able to meet growing demand in North America and around the world. The new jobs will bring total employment at the plant to more than 4,000 by the end of this year. Ford already added 300 jobs in 2013 to meet growing consumer demand. “The new 2015 Ford Edge sets a new standard in its class and will show countries around the world Canadian quality at its best,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of The Americas. “New jobs at Oakville Assembly will strengthen our investment in Canada and increase our capabilities as we gear up for one of the most anticipated launches at Ford.” The Oakville assembly plant currently manufactures the Ford Edge and Flex, along with the Lincoln MKX and MKT. The 2015 Ford Edge will be exported to more than 100 countries worldwide. It’s all new from wheels to roof and is loaded with more technology, higher levels of craftsmanship and greatly improved vehicle dynamics.

Want to Appear More Powerful? Choose Black for Your Next Car Colour If you’re a powerful person, you’re most likely to drive a black car, at least according to the results of a new survey from autoTRADER.ca, which asked its online community across Canada for their opinions on car colour and its connection to personality traits. “There’s no denying that car colour is an overwhelming decisionmaker when it comes to acquiring a new set of wheels,” says Ian MacDonald, Director of Marketing at autoTRADER.ca. “We thought it would be interesting to dig a bit deeper into what Canadians think about the subject.” The unscientific survey of 1,453 Canadians across Canada found that: # Black plays the heavy: Sixty-four per cent of Canadians believe “powerful types” are most likely to drive a black vehicle. # Red is risky, but in a good way: More than half of Canadians, 53 per cent, think that “risk-takers” are most likely to drive a red vehicle. Also, one quarter of Canadians, 26 per cent, believe that “creative” personalities are most likely to drive red cars 8

A rare, $1-million super car suddenly became too hot for a Dragon to handle, after it caught fire at a Caledon gas station on Sunday. Michael Wekerle, one of the judges on the CBC show Dragons’ Den, saw his brand new Porsche 918 Spyder go up in flames at an Esso gas station, according to a CBC statement. A short video of the car fire soon hit YouTube. It is the first Porsche of its kind in Canada, with a limited global supply of 918 vehicles. Wekerle — described as a “rock star in the world of Canadian finance” — was filling up at the station when some drops of gas leaked, resulting in a fire that destroyed his new ride, according to CBC. He had just picked it up at the beginning of September. Prasath Patkunasinga, 29, a cashier at the gas station who witnessed the fire, said the blaze raged for as long as 15 minutes before fire crews doused the fire. “He was pumping gas and then all of a sudden I heard a noise and I turned around and there was fire,” Patkunasinga said on Monday. After initiating an “emergency stop” which killed power to the gas pumps, he ran out to help the driver extinguish the fire, he said. “It was so bad,” Patkunasinga added. “First the car itself was burning, then it caught on the pumps. Then we got really scared.” He recognized the driver as a regular customer but did not know his name. “He didn’t worry about the car,” he added. “He said, ‘everybody’s safe so that’s all that matters.’” The Porsche was towed to Wekerle’s 80-hectare Caledon country home, according to CBC. No one was injured. # Smart people drive silver: Those with high IQs are most likely to do their thinking at the wheel of a silver vehicle (34 per cent of Canadians agree) # But yawn if you like silver or white: 66 per cent of Canadians believe that the “boring type” will be driving either white- or silvercoloured cars. When asked about their favourite car colour in general, the top three choices were: Black (28 per cent), white (19 per cent) and blue (17 per cent). Moreover, colour is considered crucial to the car buying transaction, with 75 per cent of Canadians listing car colour as either “essential” or “Important” when it comes to buying a vehicle. “Whatever the colour,” adds MacDonald, “autoTRADER.ca has buyers and sellers covered with myriad tips and to-do’s to keep in mind throughout the process. And with over 400,000 vehicles in our marketplace, autoTRADER.ca is sure to have listings that appeal to even the most discerning car colour aficionado.”

OpenRoad Auto Group Buys 3 Iconic Vancouver Dealerships

This announcement gives OpenRoad its second pair of BMW and MINI dealerships, in addition to their existing BMW and MINI dealerships in Langley, B.C. The BMW Store in Vancouver was the first BMW dealership to open its doors in Canada and remains one of the largest volume dealers in the country. MINI Yaletown is urban, iconic and youthful — three characteristics that are well suited to downtown Vancouver. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Vancouver is the only authorized Rolls-Royce dealer in the city and adds the first ultra-luxury brand to the OpenRoad portfolio offering of import automotive brands. “We really look forward to welcoming them to our team of now more than 700 associates. Having a presence in downtown Vancouver and Kitsilano has been a dream of mine for many years. By adding

three iconic brands and some of the best automotive professionals in the industry, it makes for a very bright future at OpenRoad,” said Christian Chia, President and CEO of the OpenRoad Auto Group. “The BMW Store is the pre-eminent BMW retailer in the country — it was of the one of the first and has been a landmark in the community. Rolls-Royce is a proud company that celebrated 110 years of history this year. We are proud and excited to be the only retailer in Western Canada.” The announcement comes as welcomed news at The BMW Store, MINI Yaletown and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Vancouver. Dimitri Kotsalis, General Manager of the three dealerships, said, “The 130 employees that have proudly represented these three distinguished brands have greeted the acquisition with open arms. I look forward to the world of possibilities that lay ahead of us as part of this celebrated automotive group.” The three dealerships were previously owned by the American company Fields Automotive Group, and officially become part of the Canada-based OpenRoad Auto Group on Oct. 2, 2014

F

ord has always pleased the European markets with a wide variety of compact vehicles, especially those packed with some punch. The Ford Fiesta ST (for Sport Technologies) made its European launch a couple of years ago, and in 2014, North Americans were finally able to purchase this pocket-sized street racer. I had one full week in a Molten Orange, fully loaded ST and let me tell you, this sport compact will provide thrills similar to a world-class roller coaster.

2014 Ford Fiesta ST

Pocket-sized Street Racer

O

n the outside, the 2014 Fiesta ST looks like a downsized version of the Focus ST, almost as if it had been washed, thrown into a hot dryer, and then hung out to dry. Don’t get me wrong, this is a great looking 5-door. The Fiesta and Fiesta ST share the same natural body shape, but the ST adds some great racing inspired modifications and badging that make this car look aggressive. Up front, the front fascia is low and aggressive, complete with a gloss black honeycomb mesh grille. The fog lights are set wide on the outer edges and are pretty functional. The side skirts are low and carry the flow of the front lines nicely. At the rear, there is a colour-matched low diffuser, dual exhausts, and a massive rear spoiler that extends straight off the sloping roofline. Compared to the regular Fiesta, the ST sits 15 mm lower, enhancing the racing style and ability of the car. The 17” low profile tire and wheel package keep the ST firmly planted on the road. On the inside, the ST theme is carried throughout, most notably on the sport-heated Recaro seats. This standard factory upgrade provides exceptional comfort and support, even though 12

only for the front passengers. The rear passengers are left to bounce around when you throw this car into corners. Our fullyloaded tester came complete with push button start, navigation, Sirius radio, sunroof, leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, rear view camera, etc. etc. etc. A few years ago, Ford’s affiliation with Microsoft gave rise to the new Sync with MyFord Touch media system. Even though the multimedia screen is somewhat small, it’s easy to use; however, at times, I didn’t quite hit the top menu buttons exactly where I wanted. The Sync system works surprisingly well; voice commands were spot on and there were very few, if any, errors in voice recognition. Front room is quite good and there is adequate room for rear passengers. Remember, this is a compact sports car and not a luxury full size. So, one may ask, what makes the Fiesta ST so desirable? Well, simple. This car has the same power-to-weight ratio as a first generation M3 and a current Mini Cooper S. That’s right…a BMW M3 and Cooper S. If that’s not enough to impressive you right now, then keep reading.

2014 Ford Fiesta ST

Ford Fiesta ST 2014

Under the hood, the Fiesta packs a nifty little direct-injected Ecoboost 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Yeah, it doesn’t seem like much, until you consider that the car itself only weighs about 2742 lbs. Match these two factors with the 6-speed manual gearbox (no automatic available) and you’ve got quite the rocket here. Producing 214 lb-ft of maximum torque, my Molten Orange ST screamed to 100 km/h in about 6.9 seconds, which is pretty darn close to Ford’s rating of 6.7 seconds. The max turbo boost, with almost no lag, is programmed to last 20 seconds, after which pressure is cut. Unless you’re trying to escape from the men in blue or doing an extended track race, this should be ample. What I also really appreciated was that power was available almost instantaneously, even at about 1300 rpm. The drive of the 2014 ST was exactly what I wanted it to be – comfortable, but peppy and absolutely exhilarating. Even though the ST would handle its own on a track, it is comfortable enough to drive on a daily basis. That being said, my younger 5-year old daughter did say it was a little bumpy. Steering is light but very responsive, thanks to the 13.6:1 steering ratio – in fact, other reviewers have compared the handling and steering of this Ford to high end sports cars, and I would whole-heartedly agree. In the city, this car is absolute breeze to manoeuver and park, with even the “smaller car only” spots looking oversized. For a small car, most major controls are also placed very well, so they aren’t overly crowded or bunched together. City driving…check. On a weekend, a friend and I decided to take the ST through some windy roads in Langley, you know, just to informally test the “trackness” of the car. We booted around some quiet serpentine roads and this is where the ST really shines. The 6-speed was quick to shift, thanks to the short throw shifter, and the clutch up being almost perfect. The first gear is fast, but 2nd and 3rd gears is where you really feel the boost kick in, especially when mixed with the throaty sound of the exhaust. To stop the car, the brakes worked extremely well, and the bright red-painted calipers looked nice. At the end, we felt like teenagers in a high-powered go-cart; yes, it was a blast to drive. One thing to note here is that my friend, who is 6’2” and weighs about 215 lbs. said that the Recaro seats were not very comfortable for him; thus, they may not be ideal for larger and/or taller front occupants. The 2014 Ford Fiesta ST is a welcome addition to the North American market and will be a great contender in the sport compact segment. The base price is $22, 638, but with the packages I had on my tester, the final price was close to $27, 000. This may sound like a lot for a compact sports car, but prepare to shell out quite a bit more for equivalent “competing” European models, which will not even be fully loaded. October 2014

Tuning your Ride prPormYNs itaUNinMg With Kelvin Choi & Jags Gill, ETG

Written by: Jag Dhatt As a car and speed junkie, I’ve always looked for ways to increase the power and acceleration of my motorcycles and vehicles. Like others, I’ve done the usual: high performance exhaust, cold-air intake, and even using premium fuel. Yes, these modifications did give me “some” increase in performance, but it was negligible – not even enough to be felt. And what’s more, I didn’t want to invest large amounts of money into superchargers or adding high performance camshafts. Was I stuck? After purchasing my BMW 535i, I began to notice more and more forums focused on ECU tuning. This concept seemed interesting to me, especially since modern cars are now mostly computer controlled. In a nutshell, ECU tuning is simply modifying your vehicle’s computer software so that the car performs at its peak levels. Manufacturers usually limit and reduce a vehicle’s performance levels so that it can be driven in most countries, while satisfying emissions standards. After doing some preliminary research, I made a call to ECU Tuning Group’s (ETG) Vancouver office and spoke with senior tuner, Kelvin Choi. Choi has been tuning European and exotic cars for a long time, and during our chat, he gave me a history of tuning and ETG’s history. “Simply put, tuning a car means modifying the manufacturer’s vehicle computer settings,” began Choi. “Vehicles come loaded with software programs and tuners can modify these software programs to make them function more efficiently and with higher performance. It’s like changing your home computer’s settings so that it runs faster.” Well, that seems pretty simple, right. Not so, though. Choi explained that no car is exactly the same, and thus, each car must be programmed individually to achieve the best results. Choi explained that, “There are average tuners and there are great tuners, just like there are great computer programmers. We have the latest software because we develop our own software.” “ECU Tuning Group’s founder, Jags Gill, began to develop software modifications in the mid 1990’s,” said Choi. “Within a short period of time, his shop became a boutique which modified mostly European and exotic brands, such as Lamborghini, Ferrari, BMW, Mercedes, Land Rover, Jaguar, and Audi. Not only did he tune personal cars, but Gill became the go-to person for dealerships. In 2004, the company was rebranded as ETG with its main office in the Silicon Valley of California. Since then, the company has opened another 11 offices in the USA and Canada.” After Choi explained all this to me, I wanted to know how many cars the Vancouver office has reprogrammed, and I was surprised by the number. “On average, we tune about 3 cars per week,” said Choi. Wow, that’s about 150 cars in a year – impressive for the Vancouver location. I learned that their California location does a lot more, about 16

In Your Corner 75 cars per week. Via telephone, I had the chance to speak with Jags Gill, owner of ETG. Humbly, he said that many of ETG’s clients are owners of large corporations, such as Oracle, Google, and other Fortune 500 companies. “We work face-to-face with clients and behind the scenes with dealerships to provide the best performance software upgrades to many different brands of cars,” said Gill. “We’ve built a solid reputation providing the best tuning and software reprogramming, and our client list is our backing.” With clients like these, I would agree with Gill. In fact, he even offered to take me on a tour of his facility and introduce me to some of his Fortune 500 clients next time I’m in California. So then I asked the important question – what gains could I expect in my BMW 535i, especially since it’s a twin-turbo. Choi assured me that, on average, the 535i could expect an increase of about 65 hp and 80 lb-ft of torque. Did I hear that correctly? 65 hp and 80 lb-ft of torque? “Each car is individually tuned, and cars that are turbo- or supercharged show the most increases in power,” explained Choi. Oh, and Choi also said that my fuel economy should increase as well. Okay, sign me up. As a journalist who wanted evidence, I decided to let ETG tune my BMW – yes, I was skeptical, but was assured that I will be very happy with the end results. The entire process would take about 4 hours. In order to reprogram my car, my factory software needed to be downloaded (they keep a backup copy, just in case) and sent to head office. From there, a new software program would be sent back to Choi and uploaded to my car. “Remember,” said Choi, “your factory software is de-tuned within their parameters, and from there, we are able to reprogram it.” Well, I have my appointment set with Kelvin Choi within a week’s time. I’m anxious to see if the claims will be substantiated. According to ETG’s history, and by speaking with owners of vehicles he has worked on, I’m looking forward to getting my car tuned. In the November issue of DRK, I will provide a first-hand account of the results and my impressions.

Thunderbird Storm

Review by: J. Dhatt - SJ Power Media Inc.

A

couple of years ago, Triumph created its own “Factory Custom Dark Series” bike by borrowing a page from Harley-Davidson and creating the Thunderbird Storm. Even though the Storm shares the same chassis as the Thunderbird, modifications and tweaks create an entirely unique riding experience. The 2014 Thunderbird Storm is a big, very beautiful, “dark” (black or graphite) motorcycle that has bad-ass written all over it. Weighing in at 748 lbs, it’s a heavy motorcycle, but that doesn’t hinder inspiring confidence in even smaller riders. The twin headlamps are what first grabs your attention; yep, they are definitely Triumph inspired. The handle bars are drag-like, and even though they seem wide, they are quite comfortable. Swing your leg over the saddle and right off the bat, you’ve settled into a very comfortable seat, which has a height of 27.5” and should suit most riders. The fuel tank, like other elements of the bike, is also large, and tapers down towards the seat. The tank top instrument panel is simple with a large round dial – the top portion for the speedometer and the bottom portion being a tachometer. A small LCD screen allows you to toggle between various readings. What I really liked is that the placement of the dial and LCD provides a very clean sparse look to the tank top. The Triumph logo, in chrome, is an elegant attribute on our matte graphite version of the Storm. The little bit of chrome is in the twin tailpipes. If I had to choose colours, I definitely go with the matte black. Press the start button and the 1699cc liquid-cooled DOHC parallel-twin powerplant comes to life. The Thunderbird has a smaller 1597cc engine, but the Storm’s been upped with 3.3mm bigger pistons in huge 107.1mm bores. That’s enough to give the Storm 96 18

hp and 115 lb-ft of torque – did we mention that this bike is powerful? As with other models, this dark cruiser’s powerplant is nicely matched with a 6-speed constant mesh, helical 2nd – 6th gearbox. Riding the Thunderbird Storm around town was quite comfortable. Even though this big bike prefers the open roads, I found it to be quite agile in city commuting. Seating and leg position were perfect for me and I’m 5’11”. The fat 47mm diameter forks and adjustable rear shocks provided a comfortable ride, even on some not-so-smooth and unpaved roads that were undergoing repaving and resurfacing. I only had a short time with the Storm, but that being said, I had to take it on the open road. I decided to spend a couple of hours and take a ride to Squamish and back. As soon as I left the West Vancouver area, I opened the throttle and the bike lurched forward – if you’re not careful, this bike has the potential to startle you with its acceleration. The smile on my face soon became laughter as I winded down the Sea-to-Sky Highway; the Thunderbird Storm was an absolute blast to ride. The beefy 120 front and fat 200 rear tire provide excellent traction and great grip. One thing that this cruiser doesn’t have is great lean angle; although this is typical for a cruiser, I almost scraped the left peg once, probably because I was being overly daring. If you’re going fast, it’s necessary to be able to stop quickly and the Storm’s twin 310mm floating discs, with Nissin 4-piston fixed calipers, at the front and single 310mm fixed disc, with Brembo 2-piston caliper, at the rear, provide exceptional braking power. ABS, of course is standard on the Thunderbird Storm. I found the Storm to be a great motorcycle, with excellent fit and finish. While it shares its styling cues with some of the best cruisers on the market, its European flair sets it apart. The 2014 Triumph Thunderbird Storm starts at $16, 499.

CycleWorld’s Top 10

BEST CRUISER: Indian Chief Classic

BEST DUAL-SPORT/ ENDURO:

KTM 500 EXC

B

I

t might have been enough if Polaris simply got the paint, chrome, and styling right with its first effort from the reborn Indian marque. But it did so much more with the Chief, designing a fantastic mechanical package too. The resulting motorcycle would be a winner even without its gorgeous finish. Power from the Thunder Stroke 111 V-twin is abundant and sweet, and its sound is pure music. That classic-looking mill is hung in a greathandling aluminum chassis that delivers a stable, relaxing ride. Think of it as beautiful engineering, down to the dipstick.

BEST SUPERBIKE: Ducati 1199 Superleggera

y winning this award for the third year running, KTM is taunting its competitors to build a dual-sport machine as amazing as its 500 EXC. So far, almost nobody’s even tried. This street-legal enduro, essentially a racebike, can be ridden almost anywhere a motor vehicle is legal, from highways to the gnarliest of off-road terrain, sucking it up with ease then blowing roost a mile high with that big, 510cc thumper. It ain’t cheap, but as the saying goes, freedom isn’t free.

BEST MIDDLEWEIGHT STREETBIKE:

Yamaha FZ-09

T

T

here has never been a production superbike like the Ducati Superleggera. The bike’s specs read like a flashback to Chemistry 101 and trying to memorize the periodic table of elements: Mg, Ti, W, Al, and C. With its magnesium monocoque chassis and forged wheels, countless titanium fasteners, exhaust, con-rods, plus a carbon-fiber tailsection and bodywork, Ducati has delivered a liter-class sportbike that weighs a scant 390 pounds (claimed) fully fueled. But the Superquadro engine is equally exotic and tuned to produce just shy of 190 rear-wheel horsepower. The combined result delivered 150-mph, fifth-gear wheelies on our exclusive ride at Italy’s Mugello Circuit. This isn’t the finest production superbike of the year. It’s the most incredibly trick superbike ever made.

20

October 2014

he “big” middleweight revolution is in full swing. We’re happy we kicked up the displacement limit in this category for 2012 voting and have only watched more and more bikes enter the class. But nobody did it better in 2014 than Yamaha with its stellar FZ-09. Killer power from its “CP3” 847cc inline triple and a low dry weight of 396 pounds make it an exceptionally exciting bike to ride. That the sit-up riding position is “most-day” comfortable and the suspension transitions well from commuting to sporty fun on back roads is just a bonus. The most amazing thing about the FZ-09, though, is the incredible value. This is so much motorcycle for $7,990 that the big middleweight revolution can only get bigger.

BEST SPORT-TOURING BIKE:

t takes a pretty special machine to unseat the BMW K1600GT as Cycle World’s best sport-touring bike, but that’s exactly what the new wasserboxer-powered BMW R1200RT is. It’s not just the fact that the RT uses a flat-twin, BMW’s spiritual core, but also that this swift and comfortable machine is about 130 pounds lighter than its six-cylinder sibling, which makes it easier to maneuver in your garage or on Mulholland. Yet the R1200RT, with its saddlebags, optional top case, and excellent fairing, is still very much a great long-distance pack mule, boasting electronic ride modes and Dynamic ESA semi-active suspension that adapt the bike to any condition. Score one for the purists.

ow good is this bike? Just look at the amazing results posted by Ryan Villopoto and his Monster Energy Kawasaki team in the 2014 AMA Supercross series: Seven wins and 12 podiums earned RV2 his fourth-straight title. Okay, Villopoto is pretty damn good, but a great machine made his job a whole lot easier. The KX’s hard-hitting power and class-leading suspension make it a great tool for us mortals too. Staying at the top is hard work, but Kawi has earned it.

BEST TOURING BIKE:

BMW K1600GTL

hen the Super Duke R prototype was shown at EICMA two years ago, we laughed at its outrageousness—and fantasized about riding it—but didn’t think a traditionally dirt-oriented company would fire up the production line on such an asskicking, over-the-top powerhouse streetbike. But here it is and holy s—t is it! A lot of technical elements conspired to make the 1290 R a success—not just its bored-andstroked 1,301cc LC8 V-twin. Class-leading, lean-sensing ABS and Traction Control tame the savage 152 hp and 93 freakin’ poundfeet of peak torque. It’s raw and raucous and a scream at the racetrack yet refined enough for commuting. Look who’s laughing now!

BEST ADVENTURE BIKE:

BEST STANDARD:

KTM 1190 Adventure

BMW S1000R

A

T

he offerings in the once niche sport naked category have grown so vast it appears to have become the new standard. Why settle for only comfort and practicality when you can have that and more? BMW currently offers a superior answer. The S1000R delivers superbike acceleration and track-sharp handling when you want it yet possesses a civil side that is just a few button presses away. Adrenaline or relaxation, the S1000R’s HP4-derived electronics suite administers both and sets a higher standard.

tough category, but the cream that is the BMW K1600GTL has remained at the top of this CW class for an impressive four years. The secret to the GTL’s success? The sophisticated sportiness that emanates from an outstanding chassis and a silky smooth inline-six engine that wails like a banshee above 6,000 rpm. With its superb luggage, large fairing, electronically adjustable suspension, and excellent overall dynamics, the $23,950 BMW K1600GTL has no rivals. Or take it to the top with the $29,950 Exclusive shown. No other machine has such a broad capability, transitioning from luxury superslab cushiness to taut, wickedfast composure on a back road with the flick of a few modes. For the touring rider who wants everything and then some, there is no better choice.

W

hen KTM came crashing into the ADV class with its Dakar Rallyinspired 950 Adventure back in 2003, it showed the world how good a near-1,000cc beast could really be off road. With the 1190 Adventure, KTM has managed to not only build its best all-around streetbike ever, but it did it without losing sight of what got it here: dirt capability. Awesome electronics give the 1190 the ability to deliver sportbikelike performance on the asphalt while efficiently managing traction—both go and whoa—on the dirt. The 1190 ADV really can do it all, and that is what adventure is all about. October 2014

Zero Motorcycles Delivers 2015 Model Line With Premium Showa Suspension, Bosch Anti-Lock Brake Systems And Pirelli Tires New motorcycles travel up to 185 miles in the city & over 100 miles on the highway

Z

ero Motorcycles, the global leader in the electric motorcycle industry, today announced its 2015 model line with premium new standard equipment including Showa suspension, Bosch antilock brake systems and Pirelli tires. The refinements are designed to transform the already exhilarating ride experience by offering incredibly smooth suspension, optimal braking responsiveness and unrivaled traction. To increase range, Zero introduced new battery cells with 10% greater capacity on the Zero S, Zero SR and Zero DS. When combined with the Power Tank accessory, this yields an industry leading range of up to 185 miles in the city, 94 miles on the highway at 70 mph or 115 miles at 55 mph. 2015 Zero SR “For 2015, we have further redefined the motorcycle experience by creating a lineup that delivers, quite possibly, the most seamless and pure ride of any motorcycle ever manufactured,” said Richard Walker, CEO of Zero Motorcycles. “With no shifting, up to 106 ftlbs of instant torque and a host of new technical improvements that offer premium comfort and control, we invite all consumers to go for a ride on these impressive new machines. The new lineup will arrive at North American dealerships in December and during late February for Europe.” Beyond improvements in suspension, brakes and batteries, the 2015 lineup features a host of new design elements and componentry. Freshly designed cast alloy wheels on the Zero S, Zero SR and Zero DS incorporate a carrier-less front rotor and hollow front axle

to reduce unsprung weight. Riders will notice stylish new mirrors that provide excellent rearward visibility and reduce motorcycle width. Improved seat ergonomics and softer grips enhance comfort. A more robust throttle controls the Z-Force® motor’s instantaneous torque. The latest California-built electric motorcycles leverage proven Z-Force® technology. Following years of evolution and refinement, the powertrain has been instrumental in Zero being awarded “Best Electric Motorcycle” by multiple publications around the globe. After years of development, thousands of customers around the world and the announcement of an industry leading 5-year power pack warranty, Zero Motorcycles is the driving force of the electric motorcycle industry. “Zero worked in close collaboration with Showa to develop suspension systems that are optimized for each specific model,” said Abe Askenazi, CTO of Zero Motorcycles. “The resulting ride quality is fantastic. When combined with Bosch’s carefully tuned ABS on newly engineered brake systems and Pirelli tires, every Zero has once again been transformed.” By staying focused on carefully selected motorcycle categories, Zero has kept their product line diverse enough to meet the needs of a wide variety of riders and lean enough to offer customers refinements without substantial increases to suggested retail pricing. As a result, the premium upgrades to the 2015 line will only cost riders around $400 more for very significant improvements.

onths after staffers were given a sneak peek, Ducati has unveiled its Scrambler to the general public. The 2015 Ducati Scrambler has an air-cooled 803 cc V-twin, the same motor that was once used in the Monster 796 and Hypermotard 796. Ducati claims the engine pumps out 75 hp at 7,000 rpm and 50 lb-ft of torque at its peak. Wet weight is claimed to be a svelte 186 kg. Couple that with a fairly flat seat and tall, wide bars and it looks like the Scrambler will be a blast to bash about. The tank and stance have a retro look, but Ducati didn’t go all-in on the theme. The Scrambler Icon gets 10-spoke mag rims (though there are two other versions – the Urban Enduro and Classic – that receive spoked rollers) and a two-into-one low-slung exhaust. Price and availability for Canada have yet to be confirmed.

Volvo Car Group’s All-New XC90 SUV Takes Centre Stage at the Paris Motorshow All-New XC90 Symbolic of Volvo’s Brand Transformation Strategy Aimed at Challenging the Worldwide Dominance of the German Car Brands Volvo’s highly anticipated successor to the current XC90, which redefined the SUV market and is the most successful product in Volvo’s history was showcased at the biennial Motorshow. Three years in the making and part of a USD 11bn investment programme, the new XC90 marks the beginning of a new chapter in Volvo’s history, capturing its future design direction, incorporating its own range of new technologies and utilising its new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) technology. The launch of the XC90 heralds a new era for Volvo Cars. An ambitious USD11bn four-year transformation plan has seen the iconic Swedish car maker develop new power trains, manufacturing facilities, safety innovations, connected car technologies and set the gears in motion for the launch of a portfolio of new models over the coming years. The introduction of the all-new XC90 takes place during a landmark year for Volvo Car Group that has benefited from record sales and a return to profit, keeping it on track to achieve its long-term ambition of selling 800,000 cars by 2020[1]. At the Swedish launch event of the XC90 in September, Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Car Group commented, “This is one of the most important days in our history. We are not just launching a car, but re-launching our brand. This day marks a new era for our company.” Volvo Cars Group’s all-new XC90 will offer the most comprehensive and technologically sophisticated standard safety package available in the automotive industry. The car incorporates two world first safety technologies, a run-off road protection package and an auto brake when turning in front of oncoming vehicles. These technologies will take the company a significant step closer to its vision that no one will be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car by 2020. The reaction to the new SUV has already been overwhelming with the First Edition of the all-new Volvo XC90 selling out within

47 hours. Celebrating its year of birth, Volvo Cars made 1,927 individually numbered cars available for sale exclusively via digital commerce, a world first retail approach taken by a car company. Most of the cars were reserved within one hour from sales start. At its peak, 7 cars were being sold every minute. Unrivalled combination of power and fuel efficiency The new XC90 offers a range of two-litre, four-cylinder Drive-E powertrains, all of which provide an outstanding combination of performance and fuel-efficiency. The top of the range XC90 Twin Engine, which combines a two-litre, four-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, offers an unrivalled combination of power and clean operation: around 400 horsepower with carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of around 60 g/ km (NEDC driving cycle). Most comprehensive standard safety package The all-new XC90 offers the most comprehensive and technologically sophisticated standard safety package available in the automotive industry. It includes two world first safety technologies: a run-off road protection package and auto brake at intersection capability. In a run-off road scenario, the all-new Volvo XC90 detects what is happening and the front safety belts are tightened to keep the occupants in position. To help prevent spine injuries, energy-absorbing functionality between the seat and seat frame cushions the vertical forces that can arise when the car encounters a hard landing in the terrain. Luxurious interior The XC90’s interior is the most luxurious to have been designed for a Volvo. The most striking feature is a tablet-like touch screen control console, which forms the heart of an all-new in-car control system. This system is virtually button free and represents an entirely new way for drivers to control their car and access a range of Internet-based products and services. It also helps create an interior that is modern, spacious and uncluttered.

DRK Quick Looks

2014 Toyota 4Runner Limited The 4Runner is Toyota’s mid-size SUV that has been a fan favourite for many many years. Like Jeep and Land Rover, Toyota has been building top-notch 4x4’s that have withstood the test of time. This 5th generation 4Runner Limited is one vehicle that you wouldn’t say is a particularly beautiful SUV, but never-the-less, it charms you with its unattractiveness and blunt face. It has a brutish nature, much like its older brother, the Land Cruiser. Under the hood, the 4Runner is powered by a 4.0-liter V6 that produces 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque; even though power is sufficient for this large vehicle, the 5-speed automatic is definitely outdated for today’s standards. On the inside, this Limited is fully loaded with all luxury items and amenities. The drive of the 4Runner is quite nice and soft, expected from Toyota. The 2014 Toyota 4Runner starts at $47, 680 for the 5-passenger.

2014 Suzuki GSX-R750

For many sportbike riders, the Suzuki GSX-R750 is the optimal bike of choice. This bike provides endless power, a relatively comfortable ride, and is still ready for the track, if needed. The 2014 GSX-R750 is well, the same bike as the 2013, but most riders aren’t complaining. What I really like about the 750 Gixxer is that it is almost the same size as its younger 600cc brother, but brings a handful of more power and torque. For speed junkies like me, the GSX-R750 encourages misbehaviour, but of course, only when safe. Power is smooth even at lower rpm’s, but once you reach the 7,000 mark, it’s like being hit by Mike Tyson – pretty much all hell breaks loose. There is nothing that you can fault with the 750 Gixxer – the gearbox is perfect, the brakes are on par with the best in the market, and the chassis is absolutely stunning. Can’t ask for much more. The 2014 Suzuki GSX-R750 starts at $13, 199. 26

2014 Rolls-Royce Phantom Dubbed as the ultimate luxury car by many, Rolls-Royce’s flagship, the Phantom, is available in three configurations: Sedan, Coupe, or Drophead Coupe. No matter how you look at it, or which configuration you choose, the Phantom is an expansive, substantial and opulent vehicle – period. On the inside, the standard features list is endless, with full-grain wood, supple hand-stitched leathers, real metal trim, custom colours, and in all of them, immaculate craftsmanship and attention to every little detail. Still not satisfied? Well, Rolls-Royce says you can configure the Phantom to your exact specifications and tastes, for a fee, of course. The Phantom is powered by an enormous 6.75-liter V-12 engine that churns out 453 hp and 531 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to move this 6,000 pound car from 0 – 60 mph in under 6 seconds. With very few competitors, this is a car that people with endless pockets prefer to be chauffeured in. Price? Roughly, a mere $525,000.

2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel

Chevrolet has joined the increasing trend in clean diesel vehicles by adding the Cruze diesel to its fleet. What many readers still don’t realize is that diesel vehicles of today are not the typical smoky, stinky, and loud diesels of years ago. Rather than inventing an entirely new powerplant, Chevy engineers opted for a system that is essentially a downsized version of the Duramax pickup diesel engine. This engine, when coupled with the standard automatic 6-speed (only option), delivers an impressive 43.1 mpg rating. This is on par, if not better than, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI. The styling of the Cruze is quite attractive, which accounts for its relatively high sales numbers. The interior of the vehicle is also quite nice and spacious, offering more room than the Ford Focus and Toyota Corolla. There are loads of standard features in the 2014 Chevy Cruze, and of course, lots of optional equipment as well. The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel starts at $26, 745.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Eco-Diesel

S

ummer, what a wonderful time of year, heading out on the open road with family. Okay, it isn’t all fun and games, especially with 11 year old and 9 year old boys bickering in the back seat, but for the most part it can be enjoyable. For the first time, I decided to take a road trip to one of my many car-related events. Usually, I fly to a vehicle launch, but this time I thought I would take some extra time, and the family, on the road from Vancouver to Portland, Oregon. While I attended the 2015 Dodge Challenger event at the Portland International Raceway, my family could take in some of the local sites. To get us to a Chrysler event, I asked if there was a Chrysler vehicle available for a test run. Luckily, the Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel was available. I’m a huge diesel fan, so this would be a good test of this new model and a perfect family machine. 28

Day one The plan was to break things up a bit, instead of six solid hours behind the wheel. From Vancouver, we crossed the border with relative ease, thanks to the advent of the Nexus card. So crossing the border took all of ten minutes. The next stop was the Boeing plant in Everett, Washington. This Boeing location was first developed in the 1960’s when the world’s first Jumbo Jet was being developed, the iconic 747. I take over 100 flights a year and I’m still impressed with the machines that make it all happen, especially the 747. In fact, I’ve booked a flight back from the upcoming Paris Auto show just so I can fly in a 747 again. Don’t worry, my kids think I’m nuts too. One tip, I wouldn’t visit the factory tour, as we did on the weekend. There is no action, just half built plans sitting around. I found it all amazing

but my two boys didn’t share my enthusiasm. Day two After a night in Redmond, Washington, we got up and made the trek down to Portland, the land of tax free shopping and the Evergreen Wings and Waves Waterpark. Keeping with the 747 theme, I told my boys all about the waterpark just outside of Portland in McMinnville, Oregon that has a real 747 on the roof with water slides out the fuselage, going through the roof of the building, and splashing into a huge waterpark complex. This, along with promise of Portland’s famous Voodoo Doughnuts, kept everyone on track for the three-hour Jeep ride. Now the Grand Cherokee is a fantastic vehicle. For an active family of four, there is plenty of room in the back seat and I never heard one complaint. My wife loved the solid ride and I kept an eye on the diesel’s fuel economy. At the end of our run to Portland, the average consumption was 8.0L/100km. That’s pretty nice for a truck with 420 lb-ft. of torque. Day three This was the day I had to work; poor me trying out the all-new Dodge Challenger Hellcat on the track with all 707hp. It’s a tough gig. While I was shooting for Driving TV, my wife took the Grand Cherokee to the Evergreen Waterpark for a day of 747, splish-and-splash. I checked in throughout the day and the comments were universal. “This is the best waterpark ever!” As I wrapped up the day at the track, I did get a frantic call from my wife. “The Jeep has lost power. I can’t drive over 30 mph, what should I do?” The gang at Chrysler

lenger. From the track to my stranded family took over an hour, and in total, they sat at a Shell station for two hours waiting. To pass the time, the kids ate what they wanted from the Shell convenience store and taking “selfies” seemed to do the trick. Once we arrived, we realized a Dodge dealership was literally five minutes up the road. Day Four With a belly full of Voodoo Doughnuts, like Double Bubble flavor, fruit loops, coco puffs and good old chocolate, we were ready to leave Portland. It took a while for our repaired Jeep to arrive, so on we went to sample more tax-free shopping and some of Portland’s many food trucks. When the Jeep did arrive, it turns out the Diesel went into “limp-mode” enabling the driver to get to the next dealership. The fix was a simple computer program flash, which took no time at all. Regardless, we were on the road, heading to Seattle for some underground fun. Day Five After a great night in Seattle, we woke up to rain, lots of rain. So, we went underground to visit the old, hidden city of Seattle. These tours take tourists on a walk through the ruins of Seattle after the massive fire of 1886 and the rebuilding that took place. Basically, Seattle is built on top of the old city and all this time, I never knew it. There are tunnels and abandoned sections of buildings that look as they would have over a hundred years ago. After the tour, the rain was getting us down and we all wanted to get home. The Grand Cherokee never set another wheel wrong; it was fantastic in The Lowdown: the heavy rain and very Power: 3.0L turbocharged diesel V6 with 420 lb-ft. of torque solid on the highway. AfFill-up: 9.8L/7.0L/100km (city/highway) ter 1300 plus kilometers behind the wheel, I averSticker price: $58,000-$62,000 aged 8.5L/100km. Now, some of this might have jumped to attention and before I knew it, I was been skewed due to the short trip to the dealeron the road with another Jeep Diesel and being ship. The only true way to find out is to do it all accompanied by two PR reps in a 2015 Chal- again next year. October 2014

DRK Lifestyles - Man Caves

Create the Ultimate Man Cave: Tips on how to build your very own man-friendly space (NC) Today, every member of the household is seeking a retreat of their own. Mom has the ultimate in pampering with her deep Jacuzzi tub with scented candles. The young son may have an arcade room, where a flat screen sits proudly mounted on the wall. But what about Dad? “Creating a ‘man cave’ is such a fun way to give a nod to Dad and offer him a tailored room for personal space,” says Sally Morse, director of creative services at leading window treatment company Hunter Douglas. Below, Morse offers tips on how to build the ultimate private man cave. Fashion and Function Don’t overwhelm the space with too many bells and whistles – the inspiration is, after all, a cave, the most basic of dwellings. “Try to make every piece go double duty, like a luxe-looking card table that also works for drinks and snacking,” Morse advises. Playful Accents “I like to always ask about favorite childhood memories or hobbies that evoke a feeling of comfort, and brainstorm ideas from there,” Morse says. If your man spent his summer breaks sailing the seas, for example, try a ship-shaped chandelier. The “T” Factor From James Bond’s luxurious hideaways to Batman’s dark lair, a common theme occurs: technology. “Home automation systems are always impressive and fun,” Morse notes. “They also make living in any space seamless and easy.” The Hunter Douglas Platinum App, for example, can be integrated into existing systems or be used on its own for a taste of home automation at a fraction of the cost. The app allows mobile device users to adjust their window treatments with the tap of a finger. Move all the Hunter Douglas window dressings in the home at once or by room, at the same time or one shade at a time, and by “scenes” you can pre-set, such as “movie night.” You can even activate the timer feature to set the shades in motion while you’re away. Morse also recommends Hunter Douglas Designer Roller Shades with the Blockout System that eliminates light gaps for complete room darkening and privacy. With these handy tips, spend less time creating and more time enjoying your man cave. www.newscanada.com 32

What’s Hot This Season:

FALL MAKEUP MUST-HAVES By: Amisha Sampat

F

all is an exciting time when it comes to makeup experimentation. Taking into account some of the bold silhouettes, unconventional hues, and avant-garde materials exhibited on the world’s fashion capital runways this season, the statement looks for fall are anything but understated. Key beauty looks for this fall encompass a clean and flawless complexion, a heavy stroke of eyeliner, and deep wine-hued lipstick. The Breakdown: 1. A Clean and Flawless Complexion: A natural looking polished finish is crucial in providing balance with some of the bolder and deeper tones you’ll carry off this fall season. Note – there is a key difference between a natural-looking clean face, and a face that has been masked with layers of foundation, which makes the overall appearance look heavy. To achieve subtlety, blending is key whilst applying foundation and concealer. A natural looking clean face can provide a healthy balance for a deeper more bolder lip tone. It’s wise to replace your summer foundation with one that is one or two shades darker caused by darkening of the skin from the summer months. 2. Heavy Stroke of Eyeliner: We all know the difference one stroke of liner, be it cat-eye, winged, or regular, can make in transforming and enhancing your overall look. Fall is the perfect time to try a dramatic line that goes above and beyond your usual eyeliner look. For more precision, lift the upper part of your eye with the other hand and create the look in ticks. Volumized mascara creates the perfect finish. 3. Deep Wine Hues for the Lips Wine the new red for fall? Without a shadow of doubt. Wine-tinted lips were the hottest beauty looks on the runways this fall, and are easy to pull off regardless of your skin tone or age (it’s a myth that older women cannot pull of darker hues of lipstick, go for it!). Be sure to pick a shade that compliments your skin tone, and doesn’t end up looking too harsh. Combine with a nude eyeshadow and a matte finish to complete the look! 34

Alternative Fuels for the Motor Industry By: Pahul Dhillon

T

he steam engine was a marvel that helped catapult the factory system to new heights during the Industrial Revolution. This new power system allowed machines to work more efficiently, producing more goods than ever before. Shortly afterwards, the combustion engine began to power the automotive and motorcycle industries – since fossil fuels such as oil were available in huge quantities, no one ever thought this fuel source would run out. Fast forward to the current times and the development of alternative fuel sources has become a topic of great interest. With rising gas prices and the greater emphasis on sustainable and green energy, there has been a rising desire of moving away from fossil fuels and creating more environmentally friendly fuels. Electric cars have emerged as the leading form of alternative energy and multiple countries have even begun to develop hydrogen fuel cells. Electric cars are becoming more prominent, with the most prominent and promising of this movement being Tesla Motors. Electric cars were intended as a more environmentally friendly and efficient form of transportation over traditional petroleum-fueled vehicles. Using one or more electric motors, electric cars are able to produce instant torque, resulting in smoother acceleration than petroleum fueled vehicles; add with this a lessened environmental impact and electric cars make an attractive option. However, their 36

October 2014

cost and lack of recharging infrastructure has deterred consumers from purchasing an electric vehicle over a petroleum car. The environmental impact also depends heavily on the region. Most of the world, including China, most of Europe and many other countries rely on burning coal as their primary source of energy. This means, charging an electric vehicle requires the burning of fossil fuels much the same as a regular petroleum vehicle. Here in BC, however, we are lucky enough to have hydroelectric power supplying nearly all of our total energy. Thus, in our region, the electric car would have the largest positive environmental impact in comparison to many other regions in the world. Hydrogen fuel cell (HFC) cars are a form of the electric car. Unlike regular electric cars, hydrogen fuel cell cars convert chemical hydrogen and oxygen into water and electricity. Another difference is that HFC cars have emissions; steam is a by-product. In addition, HFC vehicles are unlikely to be available to customers for several years. Industries have evolved over time and with societal demands. With more and more countries being concerned with our fragile environment, it’s important for the motor industries to continue to develop more environmentally friendly and sustainable fuel sources.

Datsun 240Z

Written by Jag Dhatt

T

he Datsun 240Z initially began its lifespan in 1966, when Fumio Yashida created a design that was simple yet sporty, matching the likes of some iconic European sports cars. Thus, even though the Datsun 240Z wasn’t Japan’s first sports car, it was the first sports car from the Pacific Rim that achieved huge international success, especially in North America. And Nissan’s formula for sales success with this car was simple: imitate the British sports car such as the MGC and Triumph GT6, by accentuating their good points and eliminating the legions of faults. The 240Z’s looks were bang on, and a big hit in the North American market. When the car launched in October 1969, some said its profile resembled the Jaguar E-type, while others saw likeness to the Ferrari GTO. The long, sleek hood covered the 2.4-liter sixcylinder engine, a unit that owed a lot to the BMC C-Series as well as Mercedes-Benz’s straight-six. The 1970 Datsun 240Z produced a notable 150 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. The motor was mated to a 4-speed transmission, which most owners said was a pretty good match. The car came equipped with fully independent suspension, struts front and rear, front disc brakes, and 14” wheels with radial tires. Being a Datsun, owners and dealers knew that reliability was a given. What was surprising to many though was its agile, even though tail-happy, handling. Drivers loved taking the 240Z around corners, knowing they could let the rear end break loose, but still be able to control it if necessary. This 2-seater fastback, with a rear hatch, was priced perfectly at $3,696 (US), which was well below the likes of the Jaguar E-type, Chevrolet Corvette, Volvo 180E, and the Triumph GT6. In its first year, Nissan sold 10,000 units of the 240Z, an impressive number considering the cars were not available until late February 1970. Over a period of five years, almost 169,000 units were sold in North America. Due to changing emissions standards, the Datsun 240Z was replaced by the new 260Z in 1976.

Overseas Auto Body & Glass is a Family Affair

hen the parking lot outside of a business is full, it’s a sure sign that the business is not only thriving, but also that its clients are happy and satisfied. On any given day, venture to the corner of 76th Avenue and Anvil Way (between 129th and 130th street) in Surrey, and good luck trying to find a parking spot at Overseas Auto Body and Glass. This is a busy shop and personally speaking, we have used Overseas’ services a number of times and have never been disappointed.

“My dad, Gurparkash (Gary) Singh Sekhon came to Canada in the mid 1970’s and worked in a variety of jobs, from mining to automotive repair,” says Simran Sekhon, the General Manager and leader of the Surrey location. “In the mid 1980’s, my dad received his bodyman certification and began to work for Goldkey GM. Later, in March 1989, he bought his first body shop in Surrey, located at 135th Street and 77th Avenue.” Overseas continued to grow after 1989 and very soon, there was not enough space for customer vehicles. Gary Sekhon knew he needed to expand and finally, in 2003, Overseas Autobody and Glass opened its new facility, at its current 9000 square foot location. It seems like the love of cars, hard work, and customer service runs in the Sekhon blood. Even while he attended elementary school and high school, Simran would spend as much time as he could at the body shop, learning the trade and the business. “Rather than going out with friends, I spent my time with my dad at the body shop, helping out as much as I could. Sometimes, I would spend hours just cleaning up after the shop closed for the day,” reminisces the younger Sekhon. In 2006, a couple of years after completing high school, Simran began to work full-time as Manager at Overseas Auto Body. In 40

DRK Profile fact, he learned the business so well and quickly that, in 2008, the patriarch, Gary, backed off and handed the reins to Simran. Gary would come by once in a while, but he knew his business was in good hands. Business began to boom at Overseas Autobody & Glass and Simran had no intention of slowing down. Overseas even began having clients who were not from the Surrey or Delta areas. “People were so happy with our service that they began to refer their friends and family to us,” says Simran. Like his father, expansion was on the younger Sekhon’s mind and thus, in 2010, Overseas Autobody & Glass opened its second location in Abbotsford, BC, where Jessie Mehmi was appointed to oversee operations. Says Simran, “Jessie is an honest and meticulous person and he was the perfect person for our Abbotsford location.” As I wrote before, we’ve been loyal clients of Overseas Autobody and Glass – yes, there are many bodyshops in our area, but we are treated like family at Overseas. The staff at Overseas takes the time to talk to us and explain all the details of our claim and more importantly, they listen to our concerns. “You have my personal guarantee and word that, as our customer, your satisfaction is my number one priority,” says Simran. He continues, “I know people will judge me within the first 5 minutes of meeting me, and it’s my duty to ensure that they know I’m committed to making them happy. We don’t take shortcuts at our shop – all work is guaranteed for the life of your car.” Impressive words, considering that the younger Sekhon is only in his mid-20’s and just recently married. However, on any given day, he is the first one at the shop and the last one to leave – that’s commitment. “I will promise and give you the moon and sun when you are a client of Overseas Autobody and Glass,” says Simran Sekhon and take it from us, he’s not kidding.

ith the approaching holiday season not too far away, we thought it would be a great idea to talk about some of the more popular wine choices. Most people think that wines are complicated, complete with a language of their very own; however, it’s quite simple to just enjoy a great glass of wine. In this “introductory” look, for each wine, a general description is offered, accompanied by details on where the wine grapes are from, as well as popular food pairing ideas.

P

inot Noir, a.k.a. the Heartbreak Grape, the Poet’s Wine. No other grape has made so many wine lovers swoon or so many winemakers curse. This thin-skinned, fickle cultivator is tough to grow, prone to disease and temperamental to Mother Nature’s moods. But when all goes well in the vineyard and the winery handles the fruit with care, then Pinot Noir produces a wine of such complexity that taste buds weep with joy. Pinot Noir is a Burgundy stalwart that is now being grown all over the world. You’ll find the grape everywhere from Chile to BC and from Australia to Italy. Recently, even Pinot Noirs from New Zealand and Oregon have gained notoriety. Pinot Noir goes best with duck, salmon, and sautéed mushroom. It’s best to serve the Pinot Noir in a big, bulbous glass for maximum swirling to enjoy the wine’s complex characteristics.

C

hardonnay is the romantic comedy of wine grapes. Before you roll your eyes, remember that the genre represents a broad swath. Sure, things can get pretty formulaic, but done right, a romantic comedy will tease the senses and bring tears to the eyes. Same with Chardonnay. It’s the rich, full-bodied white wine constantly caught up in an “oaked vs unoaked” debate, but there is certainly a style of Chardonnay for every wine enthusiast. Chardonnay is a global citizen, omnipresent in the world’s wine regions. However, Burgundy is recognized as Chardonnay’s spiritual heartland. It’s tough to pinpoint pairings for this white wine, but most would agree that it goes well with roast chicken, brie, and crab. It’s also best served chilled slightly.

abernet Sauvignon is often called the “King of Grapes,” and gender and royalty aside, there is a regal air to this dark-berried grape. You’ll find Cabernet Sauvignon in many of the world’s top (not to mention most expensive) wines and in most wine collector’s cellars. Cabernet Sauvignon owes its patronage to Bordeaux, the region where it first gained fame and still finds acclaim. However, Cabernet Sauvignon is a true international superstar. It’s a celebrity in California, where wineries release muscular Cabernets to cult-like followings. Australia, Chile, and South Africa all produce Cabernet and vineyards in British Columbia also farm this noble grape. Thanks to its bold fruit and high levels of mouth-puckering tannins that mellow over time, Cabernet Sauvignon is best paired with beef, roast lamb, cheddar, and bitter chocolate. When serving Cabernet Sauvignon, use a decanter to smooth out the harshness.

Among the best products evaluated was Michelin’s leading winter tire, the X-Ice® Xi3™, which, winter after winter, offers increased protection in some of the harshest winter conditions as well as enhanced performance in terms of safety. The professionals at Protégez-Vous recommend the X-Ice® Xi3™ for both city and country driving. Not only was the X-Ice® Xi3™ found to have very good braking ability on ice, its traction in deep snow scored highest of all of the tires tested. “We are very proud of how our tires performed in the Protégez-Vous rankings,” affirmed Cécile D’Ittièle, Winter Category Manager, Michelin North America (Canada). “This recognition from experts is a testament to the quality of Michelin tires and to their unparalleled ability to adapt to winter driving conditions in Canada, from blizzards to extreme cold.” Michelin Canada invites Canadian consumers to take note of the Protégez-Vous findings when choosing their tires this year. Whether for passenger cars, SUVs or high-performance vehicles, Michelin offers the top performing tires on the market. Designed to handle the toughest driving conditions in the world, including the snow-covered and icy roads of Canada, Michelin winter tires help get you to your destination safely.

Tips to plan your own Oktoberfest party (NC) Don’t fret if you can’t get to Germany for all the beertime fun this fall, Host your own Oktoberfest party instead. With the following quick tips, you’ll have all of your guests raising their steins with great enthusiasm in no time: • Create an authentic setting. Start by setting up tents, opting for long tables and chairs to set the scene for a casual group event. Be sure to incorporate traditional Barvarian décor elements that celebrate the official Oktoberfest colours of cobalt blue and white, such as tablecloths, napkins, and recyclable plates. Complete the look with streamers and balloons. • Stock your fridge with the best drinks. Beer and Oktoberfest go hand-in-hand, and this year you can try something new and surprise your guests with Rickard’s Lederhosen for a strong and authentic Oktoberfest-inspired taste. • Serve the most authentic cuisine. No Oktoberfest party is complete without the traditional German foods. Stars on the menu might be bratwurst (sausage) and schweinshaxe (pork knuckles), which are delicious complements to a hoppy beer like Rickard’s Lederhosen. Mix in other savoury treats and serve spicy mustard with pretzels as an appetizer. Before your guests arrive be sure to turn on some German beer-drinking songs and everyone will be ready to party. More Needs to be Done to Protect Older Men from Motorcycle Injuries: UBC Professor A UBC professor would like to see more done to prevent older men from being injured riding motorcycles. Research out of the university has found the number of older men ending up in hospital for that reason in our province, has been growing. The data doesn’t look at the reasons behind the increase, but Dr. Mariana Brussoni suspects it might have to do with baby boomers finding themselves with more time, and more disposable income. Brussoni says hospitalization costs went up by 61 percent, explaining we’ve been caught a little behind in terms of preventing these injuries. “When we looked into….what are the ways that we can try and prevent some of these injuries from happening, we found that there wasn’t a lot of research.” Brussoni says she’d like to see more done to prevent these injuries, perhaps using media to specifically target the group, or doctors speaking more with riders about changes related to age that should be considered when on a bike. “It’s not so much about getting men not to get on motorbikes because really that [has] got to be a personal decision. It’s about keeping them safe when they’re on.” Hospitalization rate of men between 45 and 74 years old doubled in our province between 2001 and 2010. October 2014
