An exhibit that highlights contemporary design featuring works by Jocelyn Kolb, assistant professor of art + design at East Stroudsburg University (ESU), and Kimberly Snyder will be on display through Friday, March 4, at the Madelon Powers Gallery of East Stroudsburg University’s Fine & Performing Arts Center, Normal and Marguerite streets, East Stroudsburg.

Jocelyn Kolb earned both a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. She has exhibited at museums and galleries throughout the United States. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City.

“Before pursuing visual arts I trained as a dancer,” said Kolb. “I found I was drawn to body adornment because there seemed to be a seamless transition between the positioning of the body to achieve beauty and the creation of an external element that supplements human form.”

Kimberly Snyder, who is from Stroudsburg, is on the faculty of the Pratt Institute and Parsons: New School of Design where she teaches industrial design and product design. She earned a B.S. in art education and a B.F.A. in sculpture and woodworking from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and an M.F.A. in sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design. Her work has been exhibited throughout the Eastern United

States.

“As a sculptor and product designer, I often blur the lines between the familiar object and the unknown in my work,” Snyder said. “Within these broad areas I am able to explore issues such as containment, anxiety, growth, private spaces, memory and identity.”

Snyder will exhibit a series of cardboard box inserts designed for use through a child’s development stages from six months to 18 years of age. Each box specifically represents an observational study with the desire to exist inside the box.

Frequently Asked Questions on Opening a 529 Plan Account 529 plans are savings vehicles tailor-made for college. Anyone can open an account, lifetime contribution limits are typically over $300,000, and 529 plans offer federal and sometimes state tax benefits if certain conditions are met. Here are some common questions on opening an account.

Can I open an account in any state’s 529 plan or am I limited to my own state’s plan?

Answer: It depends on the type of 529 plan. There are two types of 529 plans: college savings plans and prepaid tuition plans. With a college savings plan, you open an individual investment account and direct your contributions to one or more of the plan’s investment portfolios. With a prepaid tuition plan, you purchase education credits at today’s prices and redeem them in the future for college tuition. Forty-nine states (all but Wyoming) offer one or more college savings plans, but only a few states offer prepaid tuition plans.

529 college savings plans are typically available to residents of any state, and funds can be used at any accredited college in the United States or abroad.

But 529 prepaid tuition plans are typically limited to state residents and apply to in-state public colleges.

Why might you decide to open an account in another state’s 529 college savings plan? The other plan might offer better investment options, lower management fees, a better investment track record, or better customer service. If you decide to go this route, keep in mind that some states may limit certain 529 plan tax benefits, such as a state income tax deduction for contributions, to residents who join the in-state plan.

Is there an age limit on who can be a beneficiary of a 529 account?

Answer: There is no beneficiary age limit specified in Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code, but some states may impose one. You’ll need to check the rules of each plan you’re considering. Also, some states may require that the account be in place for a specified minimum length of time before funds can be withdrawn. This is important if you expect to make withdrawals quickly because the beneficiary is close to college age.

Can more than one 529 account be opened for the same child?

Answer: Yes. You (or anyone else) can open multiple 529 accounts for the same beneficiary, as long as you do so under different 529 plans (college savings plan or prepaid tuition plan). For example, you could open a college savings plan account with State A and State B for the same beneficiary, or

a prepaid tuition plan account with State A for the same beneficiary. But you can’t open two college savings plan accounts in State A for the same beneficiary.

Also keep in mind that if you do open multiple 529 accounts for the same beneficiary, each plan has its own lifetime contribution limit, and contributions can’t be made after the limit is reached. Some states consider the accounts in other states to determine whether the limit has been reached. For these states, the total balance of all plans (in all states) cannot exceed the maximum lifetime contribution limit.

Can I open a 529 account in anticipation of my future grandchild?

Answer: Technically, no, because the beneficiary must have a Social Security number. But you can do so in a roundabout way. First, you’ll need to open an account and name as the beneficiary a family member who will be related to your future grandchild. Then when your grandchild is born, you (the account owner) can change the beneficiary to your grandchild. Check the details carefully of any plan you’re considering because some plans may impose age restrictions on the beneficiary, such as being under age 21. This may pose a problem if you plan to name your adult son or daughter as the initial beneficiary.

What happens if I open a 529 plan in one state and then move to another state?

Answer: Essentially, nothing happens if you have a college savings plan. But most prepaid tuition plans require that either the account owner or the beneficiary be a resident of the state operating the plan. So if you move to another state, you may have to cash in the prepaid tuition plan.

If you have a college savings plan, you can simply leave the account open and keep contributing to it.

Alternatively, you can switch 529 plans by rolling over the assets from that plan to a new 529 plan.

You can keep the same beneficiary when you do the rollover (under IRS rules, you’re allowed one 529 plan same-beneficiary rollover once every 12 months), but check the details of each plan for any potential restrictions. If you decide to stay with your original 529 plan, just remember that your new state might limit any potential 529 plan tax benefits to residents who participate in the in-state plan.

Conservation Camp

The Monroe County Conservation District (MCCD) is accepting applications for the 42nd Monroe County Conservation Camp, held at Stony Acres Wildlife Sanctuary/Recreational Facility. Conservation Camp is a residential camp for teens ages 14 through this year’s high school graduate being held from Saturday, July 16 through Saturday, July 23.

Campers are given a unique opportunity to participate in a variety of hands-on programs that will teach them about Pocono wildlife, out-door survival skills and natural resource conservation and management.

Campers will also get to experience the wonders of the Delaware River first hand on a two-day, overnight canoe trip, learning about river ecology, water quality and the history of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Bald eagles, otters, deer and other wildlife have been observed on this trip.

The cost is $200, which includes the $75 application fee and the $125 camp fee. The application fee must be paid by the student and included with the application.

The camp fee may be paid by the student, a sponsoring organization, or by a scholarship. A limited amount of scholarships are available by request. Stroudsburg Changes Internet Domain

Residents are asked to update their online favorites or bookmarks with the new address of the Borough web site: StroudsburgBoro.com. The Borough changed its domain name several months ago after switching web hosting services. Since the change, to help in the transition, the Borough had maintained its old hosting service to ensure automatic redirection from the former web address to the new one.

To save tax dollars, the Borough recently cancelled the former web hosting service and all items related to the site are now handled by just the one service.

This means that the auto-redirect (when the old address was entered, it had been redirected to the new address) will no longer function. Revising the link to the Borough site with the new address under favorites or bookmarks will ensure continued, seamless access to the borough web site.

Residents and any persons interested in Borough government matters are encouraged to visit the web site often. It is constantly updated with new information to keep everyone informed.

Another more recent technology-related change for the Borough is that email addresses to contact Borough staff members have been updated to reflect the new web site name, all ending in @StroudsburgBoro. com. The auto-redirect for email addresses is still running (for anyone using an old address, those are forwarded to the new address), but that also will soon be discontinued.

The University of Scranton will host the 17th annual Northeast Pennsylvania Brain Bee for high school students in grades nine through 12 Saturday, Feb. 27. The competition begins at 1 p.m. in the Loyola Science Center on the University’s campus.

In previous years students competing represented schools from throughout northeast Pennsylvania, including, Abington Heights High School, North Pocono High School and Riverside High School, among others.

Sponsored by the Neuroscience Program at the University and the Scranton Neuroscience Society, the Brain Bee is offered free of charge, however, registration is required to participate. The registration deadline is Saturday, Jan. 31.

ESU junior volunteers in Thailand Sweat running down her face, Renee Joyal struggled to sleep her first night in Thailand. Used to the comfort of her airconditioned home, she found herself sleeping beneath a mosquito net in a room more than 8,000 miles away from her family and all the comforts her home provides.

“I had never been to a developing country,” she said. “It was the most difficult thing I have ever done and I can’t wait to do it again.”

It has been two weeks since Joyal returned to the United States after spending two weeks of her winter break volunteering for the Wildlife Friends Foundation of Thailand (WFFT), a rescue home to over 500 wild animals who have been maltreated and/or neglected. As she settles in for another semester at East Stroudsburg University (ESU), Joyal remembers every detail of a trip that changed her life.

Her days always began at 6 a.m. with 16 elephants waiting for their breakfast.

Among 50 volunteers, Joyal made banana balls and cut watermelon and pineapples for the elephants to eat. The volunteers would then walk and bathe the elephants or work on special projects, which often involved a “not fun” clean-up activity. Every day of work lasted about 11 hours, beginning at 6 a.m. and ending roughly around 5 p.m.

“The elephants all have such different personalities,” she said. “Some are suffering from severe anxiety from abuse they have endured during their lives, while others are more carefree.”

One elephant who was known as “the male” was separated from all of the other elephants. “The male” had his own enclosure with only one other female elephant.

If anyone got too close he would pull them in with his trunk to attack them. He would pick up rocks and throw them at anyone working around his enclosure. In order to make sure he was getting enough nutrients to survive, the elephant had to be distracted so an individual could throw food in his enclosure.

“He hated everyone and everything,” Joyal said. “It just makes you think: what has this animal gone through to be that frightened of his surroundings?”

Despite the daily challenges presented by

“the male,” Joyal spent hours during each 11-hour shift laughing and enjoying her time with these extraordinary animals.

Another elephant, Boonmee, loved people. She loved the attention. Joyal spent a lot of her time walking her and giving her baths. Joyal also shared stories about the sweet baby elephant that also crossed her path. Pin, which means princess, is 2 years old.

“Pin was such a princess,” she said. “She would always run around and steal her mother’s food.”

Joyal admits that the elephants were by far the best part of her trip.

Growing up on a farm in Damascus, Joyal loved all animals. She began learning about elephants in school she was fascinated with their size and character traits.

She spent every year thinking of ways she could work with elephants. So when a google search for volunteer opportunities brought her to WFFT’s webpage, she did not hesitate to sign up and book her trip to Thailand.

Joyal spent six days a week with the elephants and had one day off to explore Thailand.

“Traveling to Thailand was eye-opening,” she said. “I see things so differently now.”

In her two weeks overseas, Joyal worried about the quality of her drinking water for the first time in her life. She was not allowed to put ice cubes in her drink and her showers were cold.

“Experiencing true poverty made me realize how much we take for granted,” she said. “I came back a different person from this experience.”

Joyal feels driven. She feels like she is ready to take on the world. Joyal has been spreading the stories of her experience to classmates and her sisters of Lambda Iota. She hopes through her stories she can educate others about wildlife and volunteer opportunities.

Set to graduate from ESU in May 2017 as a recreation services management major, Joyal hopes to spend her life working with animals in any way possible.

BEEF-AND-BEAN HOAGIES ½ pound ground beef 2 tablespoons chopped onion ¼ cup chopped sweet green pepper 1 (15-ounce) can pork and beans in tomato sauce 1 (14½ -ounce) can tomatoes, cut-up 2 tablespoons catsup 1½ teaspoons chili powder, or to taste 1½ teaspoons yellow mustard 1 dash bottled hot pepper sauce Hoagie buns In a large skillet, cook beef, onion and green pepper until meat is brown. Drain off fat. Stir in pork and beans, cut-up tomatoes, catsup, chili powder, mustard and hot pepper sauce. Bring to a boil; reduce heat, simmer, uncovered, 20 to 25 minutes, or until thickened. To serve, spoon about 1/3 cup of beef onto each bun. Yield: 8 to 10 servings.

SICILIAN MEAT ROLL 2 eggs, beaten ½ cup tomato juice ¾ cup soft bread crumbs 2 tablespoons chopped parsley ½ teaspoon dried oregano, crushed ½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon pepper 1 clove garlic, minced 2 pounds ground beef 4 to 6 thinly sliced boiled ham slices 1 (6-ounce) package sliced mozzarella cheese Preheat oven to 350°. In bowl combine eggs and tomato juice. Stir in bread crumbs, parsley, oregano, salt, pepper and garlic. Add ground beef; mix well. On waxed paper or aluminum foil, pat meat to 10-inch rectangle.

Arrange ham slices on top of meat, leaving a small margin around edges. Reserve 1 slice cheese; tear up remaining cheese and sprinkle over ham. Starting from short end, carefully roll up meat, using paper to lift. Seal edges and ends. Place roll, seam side down, in 13x9x2-inch baking pan. Bake at 350° for about 1¼ hours. (Center of roll will be pink because of ham). Cut reserved cheese into 4 triangles. Overlap on top of meat. Return to oven a few minutes until cheese melts.

CRUNCHY BAKED FISH 1 pound orange roughy or any fish fillet 2 cups Ritz cracker crumbs 1 cup melted butter 3 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons water Salt and black pepper, to taste Add lemon juice to melted butter. Dip fish in butter, then coat with Ritz cracker crumbs.

Place fish on lightly buttered cookie sheet.

Sprinkle each fillet with 1 teaspoon melted butter. Put water on cookie sheet for steam.

Bake, uncovered, for 30 to35 minutes at 375°. Yield: 4-5 servings; 1 fillet per serving.

BAKED FRENCH FRIES 2 pounds large baking potatoes (or sweet potatoes) 1 teaspoon olive or vegetable oil 1 large clove garlic, finely chopped 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper Line a jelly roll pan with foil; coat foil generously with vegetable cooking spray.

Scrub potatoes; pat dry. Cut each lengthwise into ½ inch slices; cut each slice into ½ inch wide strips. Toss potatoes into jelly roll pan with oil, garlic, salt and pepper until well coated. Bake at 425° for 35 to 40 minutes, turning once or twice with metal spatula until potatoes are crisp and golden. Serve immediately. Yield: 4 servings.

CHEESECAKE BROWNIES ¾ cups all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt 4 squares (4-ounces) semisweet chocolate ½ stick butter or margarine 2 large eggs, lightly beaten LIGHT BATTER-FRIED ¾ cup sugar VEGETABLES ½ teaspoon vanilla ¾ cup cornstarch For cheesecake batter: ¾ cup unsifted flour 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, 1 teaspoon baking powder softened ½ teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons sugar ¼ teaspoon black pepper 1 large egg ½ cup water ½ teaspoon vanilla 1 egg, slightly beaten Heat oven to 325°. Line a 9-inch square About 1 quart corn oil baking pan with foil; lightly grease foil.

Stir in flour mixture just until blended. Reserve 1 cup batter; spread remaining batter in prepared pan.

To prepare cheesecake batter: Beat cream cheese in small mixer bowl at medium speed until smooth; add sugar, egg and vanilla. Spread over brownie layer in prepared pan. Drop remaining 1 cup brownie batter by tablespoonfuls over top of Cheesecake Batter.

Run tip of knife back and forth through both batters to marbleize. Bake 40 to 45 minutes until top feels firm when gently pressed in center. Cool in pan onto wire rack. Invert pan onto rack; peel off foil. Invert brownie again onto cutting board, Cut into 2x 2½ -inch bars.

Yield: 1 dozen brownies.

COCONUT MIST CAKE 1¼ cups all-purpose flour ¾ cup sugar 1½ teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt ¼ cup margarine, room temperature ½ cup milk ½ teaspoon vanilla 1 egg 2-2/3 cups (about) flaked coconut 2/3 cup raspberry preserves 3½ cups thawed whipped topping Mix flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cream margarine to soften. Add flour mixture, milk and vanilla. Mix until all flour is moistened, then beat 2 minutes at medium speed of electric mixer, scraping bowl occasionally. Add egg, beat 1 minute longer.

Stir in 2/3 cup of the coconut; pour into 8x8x 2-inch greased and floured pan. Bake at 350° for about 40 minutes or until cake tester in center comes out clean. Cool in pan 10 minutes; remove from pan and finish cooling on rack. Split cake into 2 layers. Reserve 1 tablespoon preserves for garnish; mix remaining preserves with 2/3 cup coconut and spread between layers. Cover top and sides of cake with whipped topping and remaining coconut.

Garnish with reserved preserves in center.

Harrisburg internship National scholarship

Abby Krueger, a junior majoring in communication studies from Stroudsburg, is working in the office of state House Democratic Whip Michael D. Hanna as part of a 15-week internship sponsored by Pennsylvania’s System of Higher Education.

She is one of 16 students participating in The Harrisburg Internship Semester (THIS) program, which provides students the opportunity to work in all areas of state government while earning a full semester’s worth of credits. THIS invites students from each of the 14 state universities to participate.

Krueger is the daughter of Allen and Regina Krueger and is a 2013 graduate of Pleasant Valley High School. She and the other students participating in the program also will attend several academic seminars during their spring semester internship. Each

of the students will complete an individualized research project as part of the program’s requirements.

More than 600 students from the State System universities have participated in THIS since the program began in 1989, each gaining valuable insight into the workings of state government at the policy-making level. Interns have worked with dozens of state agencies, as well as in the offices of the governor, the speaker of the House of Representatives and the attorney general.

ESU students interested in participating in THIS in a future semester may obtain information on the program by contacting their individual campus coordinator or their university’s cooperative or internship office, or by calling the Dixon University Center at (717) 720-4089. East Stroudsburg University (ESU) senior Zachary Cappella, is now one of 207 college students granted a scholarship from the United States Department of Defense Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) program. The SMART program is for students in science, mathematics and related fields. Winners of the scholarship receive full tuition waivers, internships, health insurance and a stipend rate up to $38,000.

SMART’s hefty rewards don’t come easy.

Applicants are required to submit several

personal essays, three letters of recommendations and attend multiple interview sessions.

The money Cappella receives from SMART will help support him financially during his last semester at ESU. “It’s a huge weight lifted off of my shoulders,” he said. “This scholarship means everything to me.”

In addition to Cappella’s monetary compensation, he is also guaranteed postgraduation employment.

“After I graduate from ESU I get to start working immediately as a civilian software engineer for the Air Force. It’s awesome,” he said.

Cappella’s persistence and attitude rewarded him with the satisfaction of knowing exactly where he will be postgraduation.

“This experience has been absolutely incredible.”

ESU theater students earn honors Students from the East Stroudsburg University (ESU) theatre department earned multiple honors, including two major awards, at the Region II Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) held recently at West Chester University of Pennsylvania.

Founded in 1969, KCACTF is a national program that serves as a catalyst to improve the quality of college theatre through its network of more than 600 universities throughout the United States.

David Kunz, a junior from Stroudsburg, Pa. majoring in theatre and digital media technologies, earned a KCACTF Award for Sound Design Excellence, an honor that advances him to the national KCACTF competition in Washington, D.C. in April.

He also earned a Stagecraft Institute of Las Vegas Award for Excellence in Technology and Design, which includes a one-week master class at the institute.

Rebecca Roeber, a senior from East Stroudsburg majoring in theatre, also earned a spot at the KCACTF national competition in Washington as one of eight regional National Stage Management Fellows. She is the second National Stage Management Fellow from ESU’s theatre department in three years.

Both students earned their awards for their work on the theatre department’s fall production of “Jackie and Me,” a play that told the story of how Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier.

For the production, which mingled scenes set in 1947 with scenes set in the present, Kunz needed to choose music to identify the time period of each scene; create sounds and special effects to enhance the audience’s understanding of the scene; and also to create the illusion of offstage action for the audience.

“I spent a lot of time listening to 1940s music to find pieces that fit the tone of the show,” Kunz said. “I also had to find the places in the script where the mood could be enhanced by the music.”

To help create the offstage soundscape, Kunz hung a speaker on the stage that brought the sounds of the ballpark and the streets to the audience. One of the special effects he created was for the “magic” baseball card that allowed one character to time travel.

For the competition, Kunz set up a presentation board and his laptop with the entire sound-

scape and the 121 cues used for the production.

“The evaluators focused more on the artistic design than the technical elements of the design,” he said. “I didn’t know what the other designers would be presenting, but I knew they would be good. I’m still trying to process all of this, but I’m looking forward to experiencing the professional theatre world and making contacts for the future.”

Roeber also sees her National Stage Management Fellowship as an opportunity. “Last summer I was a stage management intern at the Hangar Theatre in Syracuse, N.Y., where I had the opportunity to work with professional stage managers, and this summer I’m looking for another internship with a professional company,” she said. “‘Jackie and Me’ was a challenging show to stage manage,” Roeber explained. “Technically, it was a very complex production, and the technical director had to drop out because of illness. Because it was a play for young audiences, we had to keep their attention, so there were many more effects to keep track of.”

Roeber’s interest in theatre began with performing, but as she got older and did more backstage work, she saw how important the stage manager was to the production.

“I knew I could do that,” she said.

For the competition, Roeber needed to submit her promptbook for “Jackie and Me,” including all the blocking, the emergency contact sheets, the rehearsal and technical reports, cue lists, and the script with all the cues for the entire show. “I think it weighed 30 pounds,” she said.

Roeber received advice from two sources for the competition: Yoshi Tanokura, associate professor of theatre, and Kelsey Pulzone, the previous National Stage Management Fellow from ESU who is now in the stage management program at Juilliard.

“In addition to our wins for sound design and stage management, our performers exceeded expectations in a nine-state region with some of the strongest theatre programs in the country,” said Margaret J. Ball, D.M.A., associate professor and chair of theatre. “Our student success in KCACTF competitions showcases their talent, research and perseverance. They make us proud to be part of ESU theatre.”

The Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center, 8050 Running Valley Road in Stroudsburg, will sponsor a special day in the Sugarbush for Scouts on Saturday, March 12. Programs can be scheduled between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and are open to any level of scouts and their families. The day will feature a tour of the Sugarbush including stops to learn about Native American and early pioneer methods of making maple syrup, and methods of identifying and tapping a maple tree.
