•‫\׳‬ 969. Caesarea(?). Trajan. 98-117 AD. AR Tridrachm (9.52 gm). Struck 98/99 AD. Laureate head right / Three-quarter length bust of elderly man right, wearing elaborate, high headdress and holding thunderbolt. Sydenham 173. Good VF. [See enlargement on back cover], ($1000) The identity of the beardedfigure on the reverse is uncertain. Sydenham suggests Zeus, and the fact that the figure holds a thunderbolt would indicate as such. However, the high headdress is an oriental motif and indicates a non-Creek origin. A syncretistic Zeus with the attributes ofa local sky god seems most likely. In The Silver Coinage of Cappadocia, Vespasian-Commodus (ANSNNM N0.166,1996), pg.155, Dr. William Metcalf indicates that due to recent hoard evidence this issue can no longer be attributed to Caesarea in Cappadocia. He does not, however, reattribute the coin to any specific mint.
