Tarentum The city of Tarentum was a Greek colony on the western coast of Calabria traditionally said to have been founded by the Iapygians or the Spartans. Its name derives from Taras, a son of the god Poseidon. The city possessed fertile surrounding countryside and an excellent harbor which was to play a major part in the city's subsequent history

Tarentum's commerce and military were very powerful, and for a time the city held a sort of suzerainty over the rest of the towns of Magna Graecia. The inhabitants, however, eventually became luxurious and effeminate until, even with the assistance of King Pyrrhos of Epiros, they were conquered by the Romans.
