LETTER FROM

MADISON Malibu has charisma, a magnetic allure, and is blessed by Mother Nature - ripe with sights and sounds. It has famous architecture and

famous residents. However, Malibu is a bit of a maze those who don’t know someone on the inside. In fact, you could drive all 27 miles of scenic beauty and realize you didn’t really see anything that symbolized “Malibu.” Other than the Malibu Pier, there isn’t a specific landmark or single center that we congregate at. Rather, it is a town where people who want to be seen know to meet at Sunlife at 8:50am - just before Yoga class, or just after SoulCycle concludes. Having said that, Malibu embraces all – liberal and accepting. There is little judgment and or ego, but rather positive people who support one another. We are an official City - one that has been forced to support itself because the people voted it so. Therefore, we must support one another, and that is what makes Malibu unique. Since I arrived in Malibu in 1999 to attend Pepperdine University, it was quickly decided that this was going to be my permanent address. I have observed, and participated, in the rapidly changing environment the outsiders refer to as the “Bu”. Change always comes with resistance, yet it also has a shadow of opportunity, allure and mystery. For those who are reading this letter, and magazine, it is my hope that you too see Malibu’s unique history, growth, acceptance and compassion. This is one of 5 states, 10 cities, and 3 countries of which I have lived, and there is no doubt that Malibu holds the title as the most interesting, passionate, successful and eclectic community – a plethora of color and personality. Gold comes to mind. Fresh air. Green grass, outdoor dinner parties, organic farm-to-table menus, and of course a slice of real estate suitable for the most discerning taste buds, yet also catering to those who just need that bungalow hideaway.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Interior Vibrations

Creating Cool Spaces W

hat some might describe as the quintessential Miami aesthetic moves indoors at the A Key Biscayne Penthouse – minus everything gaudy associated with the Florida city. Here, an ocean motif takes over – in both subtle and obvious ways – from the twotone wave pattern cascading over the rug to the solid white and blue color scheme given to the furniture. Yet, angles detract from the literalness of it all, while the occasional embellishment, like a detailed bronze frame, stands out intentionally, much like a buoy floating on the sea. ■

—Geoffrey Bradfield | A Key Biscayne Penthouse

W

hen you want artwork to stand out, don’t overdo the rest of the room. That seems to be the strategy behind David Collins’ project, an Upper East Side condo with 28 developments, in addition to various public and communal areas. At a glance, the starkness and simplicity, of clear angles and a palette of neutral hues, pervade, giving each room an almost utilitarian feel. Yet, in essence, that’s almost the purpose: When two lines intersecting seems significant, a painting or print, then, immediately draws the eye. ■

Armani Collezionzi Windowpane Wool Suit

CLIENTELE PICKS

You might say that windowpane’s the new plaid – or, more appropriately, this check print seems to be favored by designers over its tartan and argyle counterparts. This suit adds the print all over but then tones it down with a bluish gray hue featuring light angular checks upon it. At a glance, it emanates a classic character – think the gray flannel suits of decades past – while distinctively being modern with its slim yet structured and slightly relaxed combination.

Valentino Rock Stud Slingbacks

Every woman strives for that perfect pair of summer slingbacks – a bit casual yet still dressy and sufficiently versatile that it matches your favorite dress as well as it does your skinny jeans. The House of Valentino seems to have found the right blend, adding the sturdiness of grained leather and playing it off the strappy feminine form. But, for a bit of an edge, pyramid studs line the buckled straps.

FASHION Forward

Simone Rocha Chandelier Handbag

Created by the 2013 Emerging Designer British Fashion Award winner, this clutch revolves around a metallic and clear color scheme for an ethereal effect. In essence, it’s a modernist take on what could’ve been overly elaborate, and the result ends up being equally adaptable as it is statement making. And, for those situations, it can be grabbed by the handle or worn as a crossbody bag.

Chloe Drew Small Leather Shoulder Bag

Making a statement doesn’t have to rely solely on a loud print; instead, something angular and structured turns heads. Chloe took that approach when creating this bag, opting for sharper edges to accent the overall curved shape. As a secondary, complementing aspect, the hardware gleams with metallic simplicity and falls within the overall theme: Clarity to give definition.

Marchesa Notte Dress

Everyone’s wearing lace and embroidery, but there’s a difference between simply just picking the material for its semi-sheer qualities. This Marchesa dress favors intricacy instead, with the fabric more of a detailed embellishment for this classic sheath cut. Featuring capped sleeves, a whipstitch leather belt, and gathering to one side, the pattern overlaying cream tulle turns into a paradigm of contrasts. 12 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

Innovative Design

A Green, Forward-Thinking Concept at Beijing’s Sunrise Kempinski Hotel W

ith a gradual opening that started in November 2014, the Sunrise Kempinski Hotel in Beijing is one of the company’s largest developments in China, consisting of 14 hotels along the lakeshore and on Yanqi Island, plus a conference center, 14 restaurants and bars, spas, a private marina, and a nine-story pagoda. The hotel itself, located at the foot of the Yan Mountains and not far from attractions like the Mutianyu Great Wall and Qinglong Gorge, features 306 guest rooms and suites spread over 21 floors. In working with 60 designers from across the globe, Chief Designer Zhang Hai Ao and his team from Shanghai Huadu Architect Design Company came up with what’s described as an “oriental sunrise” concept. For one, it symbolizes China’s forward-moving economy, but secondly, it further represents its integration with the surroundings. In the works for two years, the Sunrise Kempinski Hotel materialized as a mixed-structure system incorporating concrete-filled tubular columns connected with steel beams and utilizing a concrete core. The design, additionally, integrates green technology that makes use of the nearby landscape. For instance, a fully glass exterior allows each floor to get 25-percent more light; at the same time, low-E glazing on the glass ensures a comfortable temperature in all spaces. Photovoltaic panels further power the facility.

Tying this and the “Oriental Sunrise” together are the architectural aspects. As the building’s top reflects the sky’s color, the middle turns toward the Yan Mountains, while the bottom mirrors the nearby lake. Aside from the big-picture look, Ao went for a minimal, contemporary approach when designing most guest rooms, and then, opted for a “jewelry box” concept for the ballroom and meeting rooms. Specifically, this 1,850 square meter space, built to accommodate 1,400 individuals, incorporates alternating pieces of metal and wood, resulting in a beveled rippling effect. For smaller events, this space can be divided into three separate ballrooms and is complemented by a pre-function area and 12 other meeting rooms. Rounding out the complex are nine restaurants and bars encompassing Chinese, European, and international cuisine and German beers. Kempinski The Spa takes a similar approach, offering treatments based on the European cycle of the seasons to restore the body’s natural equilibrium. Already, likely because of its proximity to various activities and attractions, the hotel is turning into a travel destination. Capitalizing on it, its owners are now seeking out partnerships to offer helicopter, e-yacht, and hot air balloon services to guests. ■ www.ClienteleLuxury.com | 13

Jaguarundi Chinchoro Hammock

OUTDOOR

Should you want to take the traditional route with your hammock, don’t settle on something ordinary. Rather, details make the design, and this model features an extra level of craftsmanship. Intricate patterns, created with weaving techniques used by Colombia’s and Venezuela’s Wayuu people, emerge through a cool and warm color scheme, with fringe and a floral motif surrounding the edges.

Noah Vintage Porch Swings

Vintage Porch Swings, a Charleston-based company, has the character down with a sturdy frame, made out of No. 1 dry-treated yellow pine, a cushy base, and two sturdy ropes. It’s built to last, so as soon as the weather warms up, you’ll have your perfect spot to enjoy the outdoors.

42" Sumaco Manual Ignition Fire Pit

SUMMER SOLSTICE The Amelie Architectural Steel Garden Gazebo

Are you more the garden-party type? Like having a central point within your outdoor grounds? Then, this steel gazebo functions as both and fulfills many other needs for social occasions and personal use. Measuring 10 ft. tall and taking up 43 sq. ft. of interior space, it makes its presence known with an octagonal shape. But, that’s not all; filling in the gaps, ornate arches support a French-style cupola top, further detailed with metal florettes and a finial. For practical purposes, its tubular steel frame and rust-resistant finish are built to handle the elements.

You like the curved look of a classic fire pit but want something bigger and grander. This model is literally up to the task with a minimalist yet nonetheless noteworthy concrete basin that creates a presence in many outdoor spaces. Yet, you’ll sense an intimate, ambient character from the light emanating from it. Using a commercial-grade stainless steel burner and a match-lit system, this fixture has been featured in restaurants, hotels, and home décor magazines.

Globo Chair and Hammock

14 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

Not all hammocks are hung between trees, as this model proves. Rather, its self-contained (and extremely comfortable) design gives you an open pod, of sorts, with extra-soft cushions. Sit, lounge, or lay down here, as the durable spruce frame supports your weight. And, its versatility means you can bring it out for the summer and, then, have it as a unique indoor chair in fall and winter.

INTERVIEW WITH MADISON

Madison Hildebrand | Malibu Real Estate Icon Photography, Style and Grooming by: Jim Jordan White Cross Management and White Cross Cosmetics Produced by: Clientele Luxury

I

t’s always a pleasure for Clientele Luxury to interview Malibu real estate business icon, Madison Hildebrand. He is at it again – making a difference that is, not just in his life but in enhancing the lives of others. Still pursuing his passion of luxury real estate, he continues to close multi-million dollar deals and is now rolling up his sleeves as a Goodwill Ambassador for Giveback Homes and as Vice-President on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Malibu. Madison Hildebrand has been busy as ever, balancing his work passion for volunteering and traveling. “Life is good,” he says in a warm, down-to-earth tone. In a recent interview, Madison opened up about his new real estate ventures, volunteering opportunities, and his recent announcement to make cameo appearances on the upcoming eighth season of Bravo TV’s “Million Dollar Listing” Los Angeles.

INTERVIEW WITH MADISON

18 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

“The secret is to put time in and hard work,” Madison says. “Knowledge is step 1 in being successful in this business.”

Reflecting back on his list of goals for 2015, Madison touched upon making calculated, powerful and grounded business moves. An intended decision to leave Coldwell Banker gave him prominence as a major player in the real estate industry with his new venture. As a Founding Partner at Partners Trust Malibu, where he brought his already established brand and team, The Malibu Life, Inc., to create a synergy with Partner Trust, a prestigious brokerage firm that caters to the clientele Madison already has built relationships with due to his impeccable charm and stellar real estate knowledge. “The secret is to put time in and hard work,” Madison says. “Knowledge is step 1 in being successful in this business.” “ It is imperative to have a team of bright, like minded individuals, behind you”, Madison says. His team of highly talented, bilingual professionals, has joined forces with Leverage Global Partners to enhance their already established presence in the international real estate market. Being bilingual definitely is an advantage in working with international clients. The advantage of being the ambassador of Leverage Global Partners has given Madison the opportunity to put a finger on the pulse of international real estate trends. One is seeing a rise in French families moving to the West Coast. “They are flying under the radar,” he says. Madison recently welcomed four clients that have relocated to the Malibu area. “These families are blending into and becoming a vibrant part of our community,” he added. Madison, too, once relocated to the area. His childhood, essentially, involved moving around to different parts of the country. “My parents were always on the move, which meant, we were, too,” he explained. After Madison was born in Arizona, his family traveled through Connecticut, Austin, San Diego, and Dallas, and then Connecticut again, NY, and finally Malibu. “Once here, I lived my summers in Argentina, Spain, and the Dominican Republic,” he says. Reflecting back on his list of goals for 2015, Madison revealed that he would like to be more involved in volunteering and wants to travel more, which he is very passionate about. “I live in and work in a community and world that has given so much to me, and I want to give something back,” he says. Giveback Homes is an organization that builds homes for families that need housing, with real estate professionals who are dedicated and committed to social change. According to Caroline Pinal of Giveback Homes, there are about 350 members who have invested their time and hearts to helping those in need. Madison visited Nicaragua with Giveback Homes in May 2015. He is grateful to Docusign, another one of his ambasadorships, for sponsoring his trip. “It was an absolutely wonderful experience,” he says. He enjoyed meeting the people in the community where he was working and touring the city. This past fall, Madison traveled to Hawaii to be part of a Breast Cancer awareness event at the Ritz-Carlton Maui, known as Play for Pink. In the little free time he has, Madison loves to travel. Recently, he just returned from a trip that took him through ports like South of France and Italy. “It was absolutely amazing….the food, the breathtaking views and everything,” he says. Each year, a group of his closest friends celebrate their summer birthdays traveling to different locations. “I am fortunate to have these opportunities to travel,” he added.

INTERVIEW WITH MADISON

On more casual days, Madison works out. “I keep my body intact by doing pullups on my hoop rings from my sycamore tree,” he tells Clientele Luxury. “I do butterfly against the swim jets in my pool, and I walk my dogs, Maya and Mr. Prince , about two miles, three days a week, carrying 15-pound dumbbells.” And when he goes on the road, Maya, a full Doberman rescue, even comes along. “I found her at the age of 2.5 years of old,” he says. “She does come to work with me...and loves road trips.” His car of choice is a 2015 S550 Mercedes-Benz. “White on white,” he describes it. “It’s like a club inside and ‘floats’ on the road.” Mixing in work, volunteering, and travel has helped Madison make another calculated decision that will have him back in front of the fans that enjoyed seeing him light up the small screen in “Million Dollar Listing” Los Angeles. After he made the decision to leave in 2013, the fans and the network had tried to get Madison to consider making a

much-needed reappearance. Madison will be making various cameo appearances on the upcoming season. “It is a decision that I am happy with,” he said. Settling into his remodeled home in Malibu, Madison is now embracing the success of new business ventures, as well as the opportunities to volunteer and travel. The ability to effectively advertise and market has been a plus to help him keep him in front of the most affluent clientele. “Working with Clientele Luxury Magazine allows me to be very selective on print advertising and join forces with a brand that you can put your face on,” he says. He is a firm believer that print is still a viable option in the real estate industry. “I use the Clientele Luxury Magazine in my listing presentation- there distributing quality and branding is key to my sphere.” We are looking forward to watching Madison as he builds his new brands and reaches new heights. ■ www.ClienteleLuxury.com | 19

Trump International Hotel Las Vegas | Luxury By the Strip T

he Trump International Hotel Las Vegas sits right where luxury style and entertainment meet. Its location is adjacent to some of the region’s best attractions: Fashion Show Drive, the city’s premier shopping destination, and the Strip, home to some of the most wellknown resort casinos. The structure gleams in Las Vegas’ skyline with a 600-plus foot tall, gold-encased glass tower. Inside, you’ll find a world of luxury: 1,282 hotel suites, The Spa at Trump, a fitness center, DJT restaurant, a heated outdoor pool, and a business center, all designed with a classic, elegant contemporary look. For spending time in the city, the hotel’s rooms offer standard luxury accommodations and build from there. You’ll have a pick of 880 superior & deluxe suites, 352 one-bedroom suites, 20 onebedroom penthouse suites, 20 two-bedroom penthouse suites, and 10 three-bedroom penthouse suites. Inside, you’ll be enamored with the beautiful panoramic Las Vegas Strip and Mountain views from the windows, and you’ll find it outfitted with the most up-to-date, comfortable amenities. Spend the night sleeping on soft linens and feather down comforters, and during the day, the kitchenette’s wood cabinets stylishly complement the amenities from Wolf, Bosch, Dacor, and Sub-Zero. In the bathroom, twin sinks let you get ready sooner, while it’s clear, from the custom vanities and marble countertops, that nothing was overlooked. As an upgrade, larger suites let you relax with a living and dining area featuring a sofa, love seats, a dining table, flat plasma television, and library nook. When it’s time to dine, DJT has garnered a reputation for its sumptuous modern American fare. Executive chef Sydney L. Jones, whose experience encompasses several years at the Four Seasons

Hotels and Resorts, prepares seasonal menus for all three meals, utilizing fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Giving the standards an innovative flair, Jones infuses his creations with Italian and Southern influences. On the more casual end, the lounge is home to craft signature cocktails, developed by the hotel’s mixologists. Like DJT’s offerings, these blend fresh produce and flavor infusions, with several off-themenu choices for expanding your drink palate. After you’ve gone for a dip in the pool and feel hungry for some casual fare, H2(EAU) is right there, with a full bar and menu of casual American fare. Grab a bite, or stop by its vibrant yet informal atmosphere for some drinks. Yet, when you’re looking to pamper yourself, you don’t have to travel far. The Spa at Trump has turned into one of the industry’s leading facilities, with its innovative wellness techniques and advanced products and therapies for facials, body therapies, and 30-minute spa flights. With its tranquil atmosphere, the spa fuses together nature, leading technology, and each guest’s personal preferences, and further offers a Spa Attaché to guide your experience. Innovation extends to the health club. The hotel equipped the facility, that overlooks the pool, with Technogym machines and builtin televisions, and provides personal trainers upon request. Not every stay at the Trump International Hotel is solely for leisure and relaxation. Rather, the facility has anticipated business meetings and conferences of many sizes, and as a result, your company or event can select from 800 and 1,000 square foot rooms, the 600 square foot Trump Board Room, and two penthouse meeting rooms covering 3,000 square feet. As you enjoy the view, you’ll have access to the latest technology to assemble an impressive, up-to-date presentation to clients, your business peers, and potential customers. ■ www.ClienteleLuxury.com | 21

Taha’a Island Resort and Spa is located between Taha’a and Bora Bora.

#3 Travel Picks

Explore French Polynesia in Luxury | Le Taha’a Island Resort & Spa Photographers: Danee Hazama and Greg Le Bacon copyright of Le Taha’a

A

n island vacation seems like a dream for many. Instead of taking the usual route, however, Le Taha’a Island Resort & Spa exposes you to the region’s natural beauty and culture in a secluded, luxurious atmosphere. Opening in 2002, Le Taha’a sits on the Motu Tautau inlet – an optimal French Polynesian location, as it’s on a lagoon and between Taha’a and Bora Bora. The owner strived for an authentic feel, and in your travels, this facet becomes immediately evident. Coral, bamboo, and thatched material add such a character to your living quarters, while, even with a glance outdoors, you’ll have an opportunity to take in the stunning flowers, plants, trees, and other greenery. The location frames every aspect of Le Taha’a, starting with the suites. All situated by the beach or lagoon, they’re designed with spacious interiors leading into wraparound decks, while thatchedroof gazebos, plunge pools, cabanas, and tropical gardens are nearby. Polynesian tradition influenced the design; each features such aspects as exotic woods, stone and coral, woven ropes, and “tapa” cloths. As Le Taha’a is a Relais & Chateaux property, you’ll find emphasis on culinary exploration. During your time at the resort, Le Vanille, the main restaurant, gives a beautiful view of the trees as you enjoy breakfast and dinner. This is also the location of the resort’s Polynesian evening, a once-a-week event combining traditional music, folkloric, and fire dancing. Le Plage, an al fresco spot for lunch, lets you dine on meat, sashimi, and salads by the beach. Here, you’ll have the chance to sample

regional delicacy poisson cru. For top-tier dining, The Ohiri presents French Polynesian fusion cuisine with an excellent wine selection. The proximity to the beach, lagoon, and other French Polynesian islands frame everything there is to do. Staying within the resort, you’ll have a chance to use a state-of-the-art facility, designed with large windows for a beautiful view. Or, if you prefer to do exercise in the outdoors, the inlet has opportunities for power-walking, jogging, tennis, and water sports like kayaking, canoeing, and standup paddleboarding. After an intense afternoon, relax in The Spa, situated by an exotic garden near the lagoon. Feel your tension lessen with massages and body treatments infused with Polynesian ingredients. Later during your stay, venture out to explore. This could be scheduling a romantic candlelit outdoor dinner, or taking a snorkeling expedition to the area’s coral gardens and small reef. For the latter, programs and diving expeditions take you to Taha’a and Raiatea lagoons. When you want to explore this corner of French Polynesia by land, a helicopter tour or excursion is the way to go. View the landscape from above, taking in the uniqueness of each adjacent island, or, through Guest Relations, plan a trip to learn more about the area’s history, terrain, waters, and beauty. Over its 13 years, Le Taha’a has won multiple awards, including a Trip Advisor “Certificate of Excellence” and multiple distinctions from Condé Nast Traveler, while bridal magazines highlight it as a must-see honeymoon destination. www.letahaa.com ■

a very small impact on the surroundings. The trees on which they’re standing are not damaged, local construction companies built the structures, no chemical substances were added, under-floor heating and hydroelectric power are used, low-energy LEDs light up each space, and bathrooms come equipped with combustion toilets and water-efficient sinks. Along with these spaces for resting, unwinding, and taking in your surroundings, the Treehotel features two-tree sauna buildings, designed to hold up to 12 people, and a new conference room. The latter, called the Dragonfly, debuted in 2013, and is now used for fulland half-day conferences for up to 12 people. When you’re right in the forest, why not explore the region and take in all there is to offer? The Treehotel is open for all seasons, with activities designed optimally for seeing Scandinavia. In warmer months, take the time to discover nature: The nights are short, and the longer days are ideal for horseback riding, hiking, trail running, kayaking, canoeing, mountain biking, seeing the Northern Lights, and traveling up to the Arctic Circle. By winter, the snow on the ground means you’ll have to explore by snowshoes or skis, take a dogsled on the river, or go into the wilderness with a ski tour. www.Treehotel.se ■

Arriving travelers check in at Britta’s Pensionat, a restaurant, bar, sauna, and relaxation area built with a mid-century atmosphere, and your stay is not far from the small village, with a restaurant, shop, and guest house. As well, all meals are served at Britta’s Pensionat during your trip. The creators sought to develop a unique perspective of nature: specifically, a view from the tree tops, with accommodations reflecting ecological values, comfort, and a modern design. Film The Tree Lover served as inspiration, and in creating the Treehotel, its team worked with some of Scandinavia’s leading architects to design four- to sixmeter rooms, all sustainably constructed and powered and situated just above the ground. As a result, there are six rooms hanging four- to six-meters above the ground with 16 to 50 square meters of space, they have
