Annual Christmas Home Tour in Georgetown The U.S. Grant Homestead Association will have its annual Christmas Home Tour on Sunday, Dec. 5 from 12 - 5 p.m. Six historic structures will be featured, each with a fascinating story to tell. Of particular interest to residents and nonresidents of Georgetown, will be the handsome Greek Revival home purchased by Ken and Judy Klosterman in 2000. Formerly owned by Mr. & Mrs. Fred Bullock, who established the house and barn as the “Country Store”, it became a well-respected source for antiques, and the Bullocks retained ownership for 50 years. When the Klostermans purchased the house, their vision for the property included a second level on the west wing to balance the two-story east wing, and a large kitchen addition in the rear. Months of planning were required before the final architectural drawings were completed and construction work could begin. The original structure has been meticulously restored and both additions were executed with painstaking care to perfectly match the original structure. The result is undoubtedly one of the finest homes in southern Ohio. Ken Klosterman, who owns the Klosterman Baking Company and is an accomplished magician, shared the story of first touring the interior of the house. When reaching the third floor he discovered some early magic tricks and items that had been left by a 19th century worker on the property who had apparently occupied that floor. Ken incorporated those items into his impressive magic collection and installed them on the third floor. The house as a whole is a magical place which has been beautifully
restored and furnished by the Klostermans. In addition to the Klosterman home, five other historic homes and buildings are included on the tour: The Grant Schoolhouse, 1830. This small subscription school supplied the Union cause with three generals, an admiral, and several officers of volunteer units and features an authentic, early 19th century classroom. David Ammen Home, 1826. David Ammen was a newspaper publisher, a friend of Jesse Grant, and the father of General Jacob Ammen and his brother, Admiral Dan Ammen, a lifelong friend of Ulysses Grant. Captain Robert H. Higgins Home, 1830. Captain Higgins raised a company of troops and led them at Missionary Ridge and in Sherman’s Atlanta campaign. Judge David Tarbell, 1835. David Tarbell was a well-known judge and politician in Brown County during the Civil War era. 2nd Baptist Church, 1864. This historic church was founded and built by former slaves and will feature a special display of vintage and contemporary quilts. The tour will begin at the U.S. Grant Schoolhouse at 508 South Water Street. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Donohoo Pharmacy at 114 South Main Street in Georgetown or at the U.S. Grant Schoolhouse on the day of the tour. Those who purchase tickets before Dec. 5 will be entered in a drawing for a special John Ruthven Holiday Basket valued at $125. Keep your pets safe this Christmas Season from PETCO
With the month of December fast approaching, families will start thinking about Christmas, and with Christmas comes the decorations. A house decorated for Christmas can present some hazards for pets, primarily because they will be curious about all the new items hanging around the house. PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc. offers these tips to ensure that your pets also have a healthy and happy holiday: o Christmas Trees: Pine needles can get lodged in an animal's esophagus, making it painfully prickly for your pet to swallow. Drinking the water from the Christmas tree base is enough to cause diarrhea, mouth sores, vomiting and loss of appetite. o Deck the Halls: A bunch of mistletoe may tempt a festive kiss, but PETCO warns that eating this holiday greenery could cause a drop in blood pressure, as well as vomiting and swollen throat and mouth tissue. Other holiday foliage, including Holly and Poinsettias, contain toxins that could lead to severe stomach problems, as well as skin, mouth and eye irritation. Worse yet, Yew is extremely toxic, and one mouthful could be deadly. o Tinsel and Lights: A flickering
flame and shiny decorations intrigue companion animals. When lighting the menorah, advent wreath or decorative candles, PETCO advises to keep pets in another room where paws and claws can't reach them. With electrical lights, remember to tape exposed electrical cords to walls or floors to ensure no chewing or tripping. Tinsel and wrapping paper may look like fun toys, but they can cause choking, upset stomach or more serious problems. o Visions of Sugar Plums: PETCO knows that cookies and candies are as much about holiday tradition as a snowy street scene; however, some of them can be dangerous to your pets. For example, chocolate contains a chemical known as theobromine, which can be highly toxic to your four-legged friends. o Antifreeze Alert: The onset of winter often means new antifreeze for the family car, which is a substance that can be especially harmful to the family pet. PETCO notes that antifreeze contains ethylene glycol, which causes rapid and permanent kidney damage to your companion animal if ingested in even small amounts. Finally, the best present you can give to your pets this holiday season is good health and some extra loving attention.

Christmas Cards appeared in the United States of America in the late 1840s, but were very expensive and most people couldn't afford them. In 1875, Louis Prang, a printer who was originally from German but who had also worked on early cards in the UK, started mass producing cards so more people could afford to buy them. Mr Prang's first cards featured flowers, plants, and children. In 1915, John C. Hall and two of his brothers created Hallmark Cards, who are still one of the biggest card makers today! In the 1910s and 1920s, home made cards became popular. They were often unusual shapes and had things such as foil and ribbon on them. These were usually too delicate to send through the post and were given by hand.

Batavia’s Christmas in the Village Batavia’s Christmas in the Village will be held from 6 - 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11. The festivities will begin with the lighting of the village Christmas tree, which is being sponsored by Batavia Nursing and Convalescent Home. The tree will be dedicated to all service personnel, including members of local police and fire departments. Activities for the evening will include free pictures with Santa Claus and goodie bags for the children. For children and adults, there will be free horse drawn carriage rides. There will also be a magician performing in council chambers. In addition to many door prizes to be given away, two major prizes – a girl’s and a boy’s bicycle – will be awarded at the end of the evening. Batavia Family Animal Hospital will be set up in the downtown area and will be giving out treats for animals. The evening’s festivities are being coordinated by the village council and the beautification committee. Council-
woman Kathy Turner says that this year’s event will be much more inclusive of village businesses. “There is an emphasis on including our local business people this year,” Turner said. “This year, we’re trying to get people to head down the street and visit our businesses. We’ve had a very positive response from our businesses.” Businesses which have so far confirmed their participation are Main Street Salon, United Dairy Farmers, Grammas Pizza, Snappy Tomato Pizza, Dingo Photography and Imaging, and Batavia Floral Designs. Everyone attending the Christmas in the Village celebration is invited to visit these participating businesses for special promotions and activities. The Salvation Army Service and Worship Center, located at 60 N Riverside Drive, will also be open. Refreshments will be served, and they will also be accepting toy and monetary donations for their annual Christmas distribution for needy families.

Marcy Wilson is a former food editor and cooking teacher. Her recipe column appears each week in The Clermont Sun. WORLD’S BEST BEAN SOUP IN A JAR Bean mix: Mix together and use 2 cups for each jar. You’ll get enough for about 8-9 jars. 1 pound each of the following dry beans: navy, black, great northern, pinto, red, baby lima, yellow split peas, green split peas, black-eyed peas, lentils, large limas 1 pound barley (not quick cooking) Soup recipe: 2 cups bean mix 1/2 to 1 teaspoon chili powder or more to taste 2 quarts chicken or vegetable broth plus more if needed 1 can, 14.5 oz diced tomatoes, regular or with peppers 2 ham hocks or 1 pound kielbasa 1-2 teaspoons minced garlic, or to taste Salt and pepper to taste 3 tablespoons lemon juice 2-3 cups chopped onion Parmesan cheese 3 ribs celery, diced Directions: Rinse beans and place in pot. Cover with water and soak overnight (at least 8 hrs). Or do a rapid soaking by placing beans in a pan with water to cover. Bring to a boil. Turn off heat and let sit for one hour. Drain and add beans back to pot. Add broth, ham hocks, salt and pepper. Cover and bring to a boil. Reduce to simmer and cook 1-1/2 hours or until beans are tender. Add rest of ingredients except Parmesan and simmer 30 minutes. Remove ham hock and take meat from bones, chop and return to soup. Sprinkle generously with Parmesan and salt and pepper to tastes. CRANBERRY SPREAD
Delicious as a spread for bagels or toast. Mix together: 1/3 cup dried cranberries, coarsely chopped 8 oz cream cheese, room temperature 1/3 cup soft fresh goat cheese (called Montrachet or simply goat cheese) 3 tablespoons plain yogurt 1-2 tablespoons honey
CORNMEAL CHEDDAR POKER CHIPS WITH HERBS
Ingredients: 2/3 cup butter, room temperature 1/2 cup shredded extra sharp Cheddar 1 tablespoon Parmesan 1 large egg 1-2/3 cups all purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/8 teaspoon ea: thyme, sage and oregano 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, ground or more to taste Yellow cornmeal
Directions: Oven preheated to 325. Beat butter and cheeses together. Add egg. Beat until blended. Mix dry ingredients together and gradually add to egg mixture. Blend well. Shape dough into a log about 1-1/2” x 10”. Roll in cornmeal. Put in refrigerator until it firms up nicely, anywhere from several hours to a day. Or put it in the freezer to quickly firm it up. You’ll get about 24-32 slices, 1/4” size. Place on sprayed cookie sheet and bake 20-25 minutes or until golden. The crackers bake up fairly light.
DECADENT CHOCOLATE TRUFFLE SAUCE
Wonderful over ice cream, as a fondue for fruit, chilled and spread between ladyfingers, etc. You can double this recipe. Ingredients: 1 cup whipping cream 2 cups chocolate chips 1 tablespoon butter 1 teaspoon vanilla or 1/2 teaspoon almond extract or splash of favorite liqueur 3/4 cups chopped toasted/sliced almonds (opt) Directions: Bring whipping cream to a boil. Add chips and butter. Turn heat down and cook until smooth, stirring constantly. Add flavorings and nuts. Cool and store in refrigerator. Warm before serving if desired.
HONEY ROASTED ALMONDS
Ingredients: 2 cups whole almonds, skin left on and toasted 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons ea: honey and water 2 teaspoons Canola oil Directions: Mix sugar and salt in large bowl and set aside. Stir together honey, water and oil in pan and bring to a boil. Immediately stir in nuts and continue to cook and stir until liquid is absorbed, about 5 minutes. Immediately transfer nuts to bowl with sugar/salt mixture and toss until evenly coated. Pour out onto sprayed cookie sheet. When cool, break up and store airtight at room temperature up to a month. **To toast nuts: Pour in single layer on cookie sheet. Roast at 350 until fragrant, about 8-12 minutes. To serve on French bread, cut everything into smaller chunks. To serve as an antipasto, you can make bigger chunks. Ingredients: 1 pound Mozzarella cheese, cut into small chunks Pepperoni chunks Red & green bell pepper chunks Olives Celery cut into nice size pieces
2 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed 2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes or fresh parsley, leaves chopped or torn into small pieces Enough bottled Italian dressing to cover
Directions: Put everything in a large glass jar. Or put it in a big bowl and stir until everything is coated. Store in refrigerator. Serve on crackers or thin slices of French bread.

Play Santa this season - ‘adopt’ a senior The 2010 Adopt-A-Senior holiday gift program, sponsored by Clermont Senior Services, is well underway. The program provides much-needed gifts for Clermont County seniors. Some donors like to collect household items or fill gift baskets/boxes with personal care items or cleaning supplies for the gift pantry. Others want to be matched with seniors and buy gifts from their “wish lists”. Gift cards to area retail stores, gas stations and fast food restaurants, along with monetary donations, also are donated. One gift recipient from last year’s
program commented, “While searching through the beautiful gift bag, I thought how unusual for a stranger to send me presents that I needed, yet couldn’t purchase myself. I burst into tears at this showing of genuine caring.” Another added, “I appreciated the box of goodies from Boy Scout Troop

This year’s theme is going to be: Christmas Throughout Our Lives The theme is meant to reflect on the 30-year history of this event, but more importantly – the history of Christmas: from the first Noel, to each Dec. 25th in our lives. Fond memories, shared with family and friends throughout the years! The parade is now being hosted by a private effort called “Amelia Parade LLC”. This volunteer group is seeking any volunteers available to help with everything from cooking food to warm up volunteers working the parade, parade workers themselves, and the timely task for organizing it all to work (without a hitch hopefully). The Christmas Parade Committee is working busily to help ensure that this year’s parade is as wonderful as the parades you may recall from the past 29 years. kind event in this area and is enjoyed by all ages! The parade provides free recognition for families, community groups, and business. This year, we need to ask for-profit entrants for a suggested donation of $25-$50 to offset the police and event insurance requirements that support the parade permit and safety of all who partake. We will still be accepting donations to off set some of the costs and all remaining monies will be donated to a Charity called Our Military Kids whose Mission is as follows: Our Military Kids provides tangible support to the children of deployed National Guard and Military Reserve personnel and to the children of the severely injured service members through grants for sports, fine arts and tutoring that nurture and sustain the children during the time a parent is away in service to our country. Aside from viewing these local artworks, the public will have the opportunity to experience seasonal baked goods and herbs, witness various demonstrations in artwork, and enjoy musical entertainment provided by the Southern State Singers choir and local Appalachian and Celtic/folk musicians throughout the festival. Perfect for little ones, Santa’s Workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for children ages 3-12 accompanied by an adult. Activities for the children include storytelling with Mrs. Claus, $1 craft kits for the children to create gifts and, most importantly, free pictures with Santa Claus! Nearly 3,000 high school juniors and seniors attend one of four Great Oaks Career Campuses High school students walk down the halls at Live Oaks Career Campus, many of them in the uniforms of their career program. Health Technology students in scrubs walk alongside classmates wearing the coveralls of the Heavy Equipment Operations and Engineering program. Biotechnology students in lab coats mix with the uniformed Veterinary Assisting students. Of course, not everyone is identifiable by program. Digital Arts and Design students blend in with Early Childhood Education students and Computer Service Technician and networking students. But no matter how they’re dressed these students all have one thing in common: They are preparing themselves for careers and college. “Even though more than half of our students go on to college, and many of them earn college credit while they’re still in high school, there are still some people who think that career-technical students are the ones who aren’t going
on to postsecondary education,” said Great Oaks President/CEO Robin White. “The truth is that these are young men and women who already know what they want to do in life, and they’re looking for a hands-on education as well as academic classes.” Nearly 3,000 high school juniors and seniors attend one of four Great Oaks Career Campuses: Diamond Oaks in Dent, Laurel Oaks in Wilmington, Live Oaks in Milford, and Scarlet Oaks in Sharonville. They’re involved in 37 different career programs, from Animal Science and Management to Welding. Great Oaks serves 36 school districts in southwest Ohio. It’s a public school district that was formed in the early 1970s when the Ohio legislature created Joint Vocational School Districts (JVSDs). “JVSDs make sense for students, taxpayers, and the community,” said Dr. White. “Career-technical programs are expensive to set up and operate, and school districts can’t

Seasonal song becomes holiday favorite The song "Winter Wonderland" has become a staple of holiday radio. Much like "Jingle Bells," "Winter Wonderland" was not intentionally written to become a Christmas carol, but evolved into one over time. The song was published in 1934 by composer Felix Bernard and lyricist Richard B. Smith. Smith resided in the town of Honesdale, Pennsylvania, and was inspired to write the lyrics of the song after seeing Honesdale Central Park and his own childhood home blanketed in snow. Smith actually wrote the lyrics while being treated in
the West Mountain Sanitarium in Scranton, Pennsylvania, for tuberculosis. Many singers have performed the song throughout the years, so much so that it is often a standard song on artists' holiday compilations. Some of the better-known and earlier versions were made by The Andrews Sisters and Perry Como. "Winter Wonderland" has evolved into one of those songs that inspires visions of snowy splendor. Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow Dreaming of a white Christmas? Many people look forward to newfallen snow to add to the picture of the holiday season. How many, though, give thought to how snow actually forms? Snowflakes are ice crystals that form in the clouds. Water vapor freezes and clings to the dust particles in the air. As the crystals group together, they form snowflakes. Snowflakes are hexagonal crystals, meaning they always have six sides. Snowflakes can grow in different forms, including columns, needles, plates, dendrites, columns with plates, and irregular shapes. When snowflakes melt and refreeze they may come down from the sky in the form of a ball instead of a flake. These are known as graupel.
Snowflakes are unique in that no two are the same. Because they are ice crystals, they are also clear in color. However, when gathered on the surface of roadways or other items, they collectively reflect the light and give off that white hue. A snowflake is often the universal symbol for winter or wintertime conditions. In Russia, people have long made paper snowflakes during the Christmas season and hung them in the windows. A snowflake also was the symbol of the winter olympics in 2002. Although snowflakes are cold, snow can actually act as an insulator. The intricate shapes of snowflakes trap air in between the flakes as they pile up. These tiny pockets of air prevent air from circulating, thus preventing heat from being transferred by convection.

BCGH Foundation ‘Celebration of Lights’ planned for Dec. 3 The Brown County General Hospital Foundation is planning its annual ‘Celebration of Lights’ for Friday evening, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at the BCGH in Georgetown. Individuals and families sponsor trees, in memory of loved ones who have passed away or in honor of loved ones still with us. Those who purchase trees make a gift to the BCGH Foundation of one-hundred dollars. Signs are placed in front of each tree to indicate in whose memory or honor the tree is named. The Foundation is also selling suncatchers made locally at the Glass ReFactory in Georgetown. Luminaries that can be purchased in memory or in honor of loved ones are also available for $10 each. The program will include special music and the reading of the names of those who are being remembered and

Easy Ways to Extend Your Holiday Budget The holiday season can prove an exercise in financial flexibility for many families. While the spirit of the season centers around faith and family, it's easy for families to overdo it when it comes to holiday shopping. Parents can easily find themselves expanding their budgets to ensure their kids get everything on their wish list, while fellow shoppers may easily get lost in finding the perfect gift for family and friends. While overspending might be a holiday tradition in many families, it's no doubt the most costly as well. Credit cards often allow shoppers to overspend on holiday shopping, making January a cringe-worthy month for shoppers who put too much on plastic during the holidays and get the bills the next month. It's always best to avoid overspending, but there are ways shoppers can extend their budget during the holiday seasons. • Look for "no interest" deals. "No interest" deals are not necessarily hard to find, but they might be a bit of a misnomer. Larger retailers sometimes offer no interest financing for 12 or 18 months
on items that cost above a certain dollar amount. But these deals are only "interest free" for the designated time frame. This means no interest will be charged if the balance is paid in full (there's often a minimum monthly payment) before the 12 or 18 months is up. However, if the balance is not paid in full, shoppers will be responsible for all interest that accrued over that 12- or 18-month period. These "no interest" deals are a great way to extend a holiday budget, but shoppers should make certain they pay the balance off before the grace period is up. • Comparison shop. As sensible as it seems, many shoppers find little time to comparison shop during the often hectic holiday season. Shoppers looking to extend their budgets, however, should find the time to comparison shop. Significant savings could be had simply by scanning the different flyers in the Sunday newspaper. Such efforts only take minutes but could save shoppers hundreds of dollars during the holiday season. • Shop early. Shopping early not only gives shoppers access to more and some-
times better deals, but it also allows shoppers to spread out their spending over a period of several months instead of a few weeks. For example, instead of spending $500 in the weeks leading up to Chanukah or Christmas, holiday shoppers who start early might be able to afford a holiday budget of $600 to 700. Chatfield College to host annual Christmas Program Cecilia Huber, OSU will present her annual Christmas program of original music Friday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Chapel on the St. Martin campus. This year’s program, "Who Is Coming To Our House?" is based on the book by Joseph Slate. The concert is a wonderful way to start the advent season, featuring the Children’s Choir from St. Louis School in Owensville,
