2010 Season Review

John Hinson capped a stellar postseason by being named to the College World Series All-Tournament team in 2010.

After a 12-1 win over Furman at Fluor Field that featured homers by Hinson, Schaus, and Boyd, Clemson traveled to Wake Forest for its final ACC road trip of the year. The Demon Deacons scored eight runs in the fourth inning to defeat the Tigers 9-5. In game-two, Clemson scored 10 runs in the fifth inning en route to a 17-5 win. Wake Forest took the series with a 11-2 game-three win behind freshman Tim Cooney’s 8.0 effective innings pitched. After Clemson defeated Presbyterian College 8-2 behind two-run homers from Schaus and Stolz, the Tigers welcomed #7 Florida State to town in a series that would determine the ACC Atlantic Division champion. In gameone, the Tigers scored three runs in the eighth for a 9-8 come-from-behind win led by Miller, who was 5-for-5 with a homer, double, and three RBIs. Shaffer went 3-for-4 to lead the Tigers to an 8-4 game-two win and Frederick tossed 4.2 scoreless innings in an 8-3 game-three win. With the sweep, Clemson won the Atlantic Division title for the first time since 2006 and earned the #2 seed at the ACC Tourney at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, NC. In game-one, Clemson dropped a 13-8 decision to N.C. State behind five two-out Wolfpack runs in the sixth inning. In game-two against #18 Virginia Tech, the Tigers fought back from a 5-0 deficit to take a 6-5 lead, but the Hokies rallied for a 9-8 win in the teams’ first-ever ACC Tournament meeting.

In game-three, Lamb pitched 6.1 strong innings to lead Clemson to a 9-3 win over #6 Georgia Tech. The win was the Tigers’ 100th in ACC Tournament history. The Tigers traveled to the Auburn (AL) Regional to open NCAA play. In game-one, Weismann pitched 7.0 solid innings and Clemson beat Southern Mississippi 10-1. In game-two, Harman pitched his first career complete game in a five-hit performance to lead Clemson to a 5-2 over host and #14 Auburn. In Clemson’s third game of the Auburn Regional, the host Tigers hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to send them to a 11-10 win and to force a deciding game. In the final game, Clemson scored three runs in both the first and second innings, then used three double plays to defeat Auburn 13-7 and claim the regional title. Hinson was named Auburn Regional MVP after going 9-for-16 (.563) with three homers, one double, five RBIs, and five runs. Joining Hinson on the all-tournament team were Boyd, Freeman, Harman, Schaus, and Weismann. The Tigers advanced to face #16 Alabama in the Clemson Super Regional, their ninth super-regional appearance. It was the first time since 2006 that Clemson hosted a super regional and marked the second straight year the Crimson Tide traveled to Clemson for NCAA Tourney play. In game-one, Alabama scored four unearned runs in the third inning and held on for a 5-4 win.

Clemson responded in game-two with six runs in the first inning and nine runs in the sixth to defeat Alabama 19-5. The Tigers had six players with at least two hits and seven with at least two runs. Hinson, Shaffer, and Miller all hit home runs to pace Clemson’s 20-hit attack. In game-three, Clemson jumped out to an 8-1 lead behind Hinson’s two-run homer and two long balls from Shaffer. The Tigers then withstood a ninth inning Alabama rally and held on for an 8-6 win to advance to the College World Series. In the Tigers’ first game, Harman and Frederick combined to limit #1 Arizona State to eight hits in Clemson’s 6-3 win. Every Tiger starter had at least one hit, as Clemson won its fourth straight College World Series opener. In game-two, Clemson scored six runs in the first five innings and held on for a 6-4 win over #6 Oklahoma in a game that took two days to complete due to inclement weather. Hinson led Clemson at the plate with three of the Tigers’ six hits, as Clemson used eight walks and a Kieboom two-run single to defeat the Sooners. In game-three in Omaha, Michael Roth pitched a complete-game three-hitter to lead #5 South Carolina to a 5-1 win to force a deciding game to determine who would advance to the championship series. The following day, South Carolina scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and held on to edge Clemson 4-3. Harman pitched 6.1 effective innings with five strikeouts against no walks, but he suffered the loss after the Tigers stranded nine runners on base. Hinson and Freeman each had two hits to lead Clemson at the plate. By going 7-for-16 (.438) with a triple, three RBIs, three runs, and two steals, Hinson was named to the AllCollege World Series team. Clemson ended the season with a 45-25 record and was ranked #4 by both Collegiate Baseball and Sports Weekly in the final polls. The fans continued their strong support, as 164,285 fans attended the 35 home dates. The 4,694 fans per date was the fourth-highest average in school history and seventh-highest in the nation. Six Tigers were chosen in the Major League draft. The Colorado Rockies picked Parker with the #26 overall pick of the draft. It marked the second straight season Colorado drafted the first Tiger taken in the draft. Parker was Clemson’s first first-round draft pick since Daniel Moskos in 2007. Freeman, Hinson, Schaus, Harman, and Nester were also selected later in the draft.
