That statement, printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office in an article by Rex Beach, a staff member of the 74th Congress in 1936 summarized some of the findings of Dr. Charles Northern, a pioneer in the field of nutrition. Beach continued in his article to point out that, “No longer does a balanced and fully nourishing diet consist merely of so many calories or certain vitamins of a fixed proportion of starches, proteins and carbohydrates. We now know that it must contain, in addition, something like a score of minerals.”7 It wasn’t until the 1970’s that the U.S. Government created the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowances, later labeled USRDA), which recognized the important role of minerals in the human diet.
