2 Greenville Open Studios

Welcome !

SEW-Eurodrive, South State Bank, the Peace Center and the Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC) are delighted to present the seventeenth annual Greenville Open Studios with 143 outstanding area artists. Since 2002, this premier event allows you to buy great art from this talented group of artists as well as provides you with the opportunity to interact with them inside their studios. This weekend will be a very enriching and entertaining experience for the entire Greenville community and its visitors. During the last seventeen years, Greenville Open Studios has evolved into the premier weekend for the visual arts in our area as evidenced in the outstanding community response to the event. Since 2002, over 500,000 people have traveled throughout the region to the various studios and have purchased over $3.1 million in art. The event would not be possible without the financial support of the many individuals, corporations and foundations that have recognized the importance and the vitality of Greenville’s community of visual artists. Juergen, Christopher and Rainer Blickle of SEW-Eurodrive; Katherine Odom and Chris Robinson of South State Bank; and Megan Riegel of the Peace Center have been instrumental in ensuring the success of this weekend. All of us at MAC are delighted to have the Peace Center as a new presenting sponsor and South State Bank as a presenting sponsor for the second year. As always, we welcome SEW-Eurodrive for the eleventh consecutive year as a presenting sponsor. We look forward to continuing our relationships with these three generous corporate partners and community-minded business entities. The MAC Board and staff are very excited to have 24 new artists involved this year as well as many who have participated since the event’s inception in 2002. Each of these artists has spent a considerable amount of time and personal resources to be sure that the weekend promises something for everyone from an avid art collector to a first-time buyer or a curious observer. The arts have a very significant and major role in our lives and in our community. They have a huge impact on Greenville’s economy and add greatly to the beauty of the area in which we work and live. MAC is very appreciative for its outstanding relationship not only with Greenville’s excellent visual artists but also with performing artists and arts organizations. These individuals and organizations are instrumental in ensuring the sustainability of Greenville’s arts community while continuing to provide a diverse array of cultural offerings. We also thank the Greenville City Council members and the City’s Department of Special Events for their support of our vibrant cultural environment and for their providing the public with fantastic arts events throughout the year. We are also very appreciative of the financial support from the County of Greenville accommodations tax fund. We hope you will take advantage of this weekend to interact with these 143 artists in their studios. If you have any questions or comments, please call us at (864) 4673132. We are confident that you will find many masterpieces as well as have a fun and enlightening experience. Alan Ethridge Executive Director

OPEN STUDIOS

Greenville Open Studios has a tradition of offering so much in such little time. And it’s true, you can’t visit all the studios in one weekend. To help in navigating the tour and in selecting the studios to visit, MAC offers you a number of tools.

The website www.greenvilleARTS.com The Open Studios directory on the MAC website, greenvillearts.com, has an extended image gallery for the artists, as well as artist statements, contact information and studio directions. Just click on the Open Studios banner on the homepage.

The App Available for all devices The Open Studios app is available for download through our website or simply by taking a picture of the QR code below with your smart phone. The app gives you a full listing of artists with their directions, mediums, locations and hours. You can sort by any of these features and also choose and create a map of your favorites. The maps allow you to see which artist studios are nearby, and you can instantly get directions to the studios through Google Maps. We hope you enjoy this new resource for Open Studios, and we thank Robojuice for its work on the project.

Take a picture of the QR code with your smart phone to download the app!

Open Studios Spring

Retrospective @ MAC

Spring Retrospective

Participating artists from 2002-2018

As the list on the past two pages illustrates, 454 artists have participated in Open Studios at some point in its 17-year history. Each spring we invite them to participate in an Open Studios retrospective exhibit titled, One-Stop Open Studios. The exhibit is held in the Metropolitan Arts Council Gallery during Artisphere, the arts festival that brings approximately 100,000 people to downtown Greenville during its weekend run in May. Kent Ambler

The retrospective exhibit is accompanied by an exhibit catalogue that highlights each work in the exhibit as well as an artist’s contact information and artist statement. An opening reception is held during the Artisphere weekend. This exhibit allows for greater exposure and awareness of Greenville-area artists during Artisphere and generates additional interest and publicity for the full-fledged Open Studios event in November. While the mediums differ, they all share the direct experience of being a cancer patient. And then a cancer survivor.

Flat Out Under Pressure

Artists have just 24 hours.

Held on June 15-16, 2018, the ninth annual Flat Out Under Pressure is a unique collaboration between the visual arts and sound environmental practices. The event begins with a 24-hour art-making juried competition. The selected winners are then given the opportunity to choose two images of their work for reproduction on the downtown recycling bins. The winning artists also receive cash prizes, and the firstplace winner gets a week-long trip for two to Italy to stay in the beautiful Villa Sant’ Andrea. This year 112 artists came to MAC on Friday, June 15 to get their surfaces officially stamped. The same surfaces were then returned to MAC within 24 hours as works of art. The works were juried that afternoon with an awards reception held the evening of June 16. All submitted works were displayed in the MAC Gallery for a month-long exhibition.

SmartARTS

Arts Integration in Greenville County Schools

At its core, SmartARTS is about teachers partnering with teaching artists in training, planning and implementing arts integrated units of study in the classroom. MAC’s collaborative project uses arts integration intensively in public school classrooms. These inquiry-rich, standards-based units illuminate the authentic connections between academics and the arts, so that student learning and teacher practice are enriched. This method of teaching helps students personalize the learning in a creative and memorable way. SmartARTS began in 2002 in one struggling, high-poverty middle school and was initially funded by three U.S. Department of Education grants. Now, 16 years later, the program has had a presence in 67 of the 101 schools in the Greenville County Schools district. In 2016 TD Bank established the TD Center for Arts Integration with a corporate donation of $200,000. New signage was installed at the MAC offices in 2017 and has provided greater visibility for both MAC and SmartARTS in downtown Greenville.

Mice On Main The Book and the Board Game Featuring all the mice that have become an integral part of the downtown Greenville experience, thanks to author Linda Kelly and artist Zan Wells. The book and the game make perfect holiday gifts, and they are available at Mast General Store, OP Taylor’s and other fine retailers.

Mice on Main and SmartARTS A portion of the sales from the Mice on Main game and book will be donated to MAC’s SmartARTS arts-integration program in the Greenville County Schools. Sales of the book and the game have provided $97,020 for SmartARTS since 2009. This generous donation has allowed for SmartARTS to expand into 67 schools throughout Greenville County for the 2018-2019 academic year. We greatly appreciate the continued generosity of Linda and Zan.

MAC Grants Quarterly Grants Program for Artists, Organizations and Schools MAC’s quarterly grants program is the backbone of the organization, and it ensures a major stream of unrestricted income in addition to project support to individual artists, arts organizations and arts education programs throughout Greenville. The impact of these grants on the overall cultural environment of Greenville is significant, as the funds have allowed artists and presenting companies to expand their programs and services. Many schools and youth-oriented groups have been recipients of MAC grants, and the support is vital in ensuring the arts remain an important part of secondary and higher education. MAC project support grants have also allowed individual artists to travel to different places to enhance their abilities while being great ambassadors for Greenville’s art scene. It is imperative that MAC continues to make every effort to expand its grants program to ensure the arts remain a significant factor in the vitality and economic well being of the Greenville community. Without funding from MAC, many arts and cultural projects would not exist. Diana Farfán

One of MAC’s primary goals is to expand the grants program every year to support as many organizations and projects as feasibly possible.

Upcoming Deadlines: 4th Q: November 15, 2018 February – April, 2019 (project initiation date range) 1st Q: February 15, 2019 May – July, 2019 (project initiation date range) 2nd Q: May 15, 2019 August – October, 2019 (project initiation date range) 3rd Q: August 15, 2019 November, 2019 – January, 2020 (project initiation date range)

Endowment

for the

To ensure the longevity of Greenville’s arts community, the MAC Board of Directors voted in 2010 to begin the MAC Endowment for the Arts exclusively for the grants program.

Greenville Little Theatre

Warehouse Theatre

The endowment was established with 5% of all unrestricted income raised in 2009. Each year, the endowment has been funded at this rate along with solicitations to major donors and prospects. The Endowment will be instrumental in providing a sustainable and steady stream of income to MAC’s constituents throughout Greenville County. With a goal of $25 million and publicly launched in February, 2014, the Endowment will allow MAC to expand its current giving guidelines, allowing for greater funding across all categories as well as for establishing relationships and collaborations with new arts entities. It will also allow MAC to fund new projects and organizations that will inevitably arise.

Salsa at Sunset

Currently, the Endowment has a balance of over $1.6 million.
