Throw Your Windows Open Wide

EDITOR’S PICKS

Publisher Emeritus Hope H. Ozer Editor-in-Chief Kathryn M. Miller

“Your days are numbered. Use them to throw open the windows of your soul to the sun. If you do not, the sun will soon set, and you with it.”

Creative Director Jenifer Lee

– Marcus Aurelius

Assistant to the Publisher Darlene Keberle

It is hard to believe that November is upon us – where did this year go?! As we publish our next-to-last issue of 2014, we celebrate our veterans, our Western heritage, Thanksgiving and the holiday months ahead. On Veterans Day, November 11, the country will honor and thank all who served in the United States Armed Forces. There are a number of activities and events taking place in the Valley – we have highlighted a few of them in this month’s issue. Leñero October 29 – November 2, the Town of Cave Creek will celebrate Mexican Grill Arizona’s Western heritage with Wild West Days. The event is chock full of fun of all kinds for everyone from the littlest cowpokes to grown up cowboys and cowgirls. The Cave Creek Merchants & Events Association invites everyone to attend this signature event – for full coverage, see the Wild West Days Special Section beginning on page 27. With November’s arrival, the holiday season is Preservation upon us. It is a season of giving thanks, giving gifts; perhaps giving parties – but with all the give, give, give it can also become a season of fatigue, frayed nerves and family tension. So I encourage you all to take a moment this month to throw open your literal and figurative windows to soak up the sun and recognize the beauty and gifts that surround us every day – even in the most difficult or stressful times, there is so much to be grateful for. We wish you all a pleasant November and very happy Thanksgiving. Until next month, all my best,

MAYOR LANE WRITES...

Big Things In Store For Small Business Saturday By Mayor W.J. “Jim” Lane

On Saturday, November 29, we have the opportunity to celebrate and support Scottsdale’s small businesses for Small Business Saturday…a national push to encourage MAYOR City of Scottsdale people to “shop small.” Sometimes it may be easier to shop in the big box 480.312.3111 www.scottsdaleaz.gov stores or from the comfort of your home computer – and that’s okay. But on Saturday the 29th, we remember that small businesses – locally owned and operated – don’t just sell the things we want to buy, they also support our local economy. Here are the facts:

Serving the Community Since 2002

• According to Local First Arizona, for every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $73 stays in the local economy and only $27 leaves. Comparatively, only $43 of every $100 spent at a non-locally owned business stays in the local economy.

6

11.14

• In addition, Local First Arizona reports that when money is spent at locally owned businesses, that money is re-circulated and creates up to 75 percent more tax revenue to the community and state. • Dollars spent locally generate sales tax that supports services our residents count on – like police and fire protection, transportation, recreation programs and libraries. All of those statistics are good reasons to shop local – but I have an even better one. Local businesses provide variety, quality and customer service that just can’t be beat ... and these are your neighbors! See for yourself. Check out our Small Business Saturday event, hosted by the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce, Artisan Markets and the city, on November 29. Just head to Downtown Scottsdale’s Waterfront and 5th Avenue areas from 10am-7pm for a family fun event featuring a sidewalk sale, carolers, Santa, free gift wrapping, merchant discounts and more. Go do your part to support our local economy – Shop Small Business Saturday.

Scottsdale Ranks In Top Ten “Smartest” Suburbs According to the Movoto Real Estate Blog’s (www.movoto.com) latest analysis, Scottsdale ranks as the number seven smartest suburb in America. The website says, “This suburb of Phoenix may be known for its affluence and luxury, but more than all of that, it is known for its art scene. Case in point: it has the 14th most museums per capita out of all of the suburbs we looked at. It’s also a good place to educate your children. It earned a 10 out of 10 for test scores, plus 94 percent of high school students in this city graduated with a diploma.” Movoto collected data for 109 different suburbs using business listings, Greatschools.org, and the U.S. Census American Community Survey. Then, they ranked them from one to 109 in the following criteria: colleges and universities per capita; public libraries per capita; museums per capita; percentage of students with bachelor’s degrees or higher; high school graduation rate; and GreatSchools.org rating (based on test scores for the area). Movoto considered any large population center near one of the nation’s 50 largest cities, but also factored in whether or not the place was called a suburb on Wikipedia, in the list of inner-ring suburbs or in any official capacity.

Rebuilding our relationship with Mexico is critical to building a strong, trade-focused economy in Phoenix. That’s why in October we officially opened the doors to the Arizona State Trade and Investment Office in Mexico City. This achievement took two MAYOR years of hard work, but we went City of Phoenix about it the right way: by bringing 602.262.7111 in regional and statewide partners www.phoenix.gov to make our effort as successful as possible. Along with the City of Phoenix, stakeholders in this office are the Arizona Commerce Authority, Maricopa Association of Governments, the City of Tucson and Visit Phoenix. More than ever, Arizonans understand that strengthening trade ties with Mexico isn’t just important – it’s a crucial next step to preparing our state to compete in the 21st century. Our permanent presence in Mexico is a move in the right direction and will be a valuable resource for local small- and mid-sized businesses looking to sell their products internationally. The City of Phoenix will be a partner with these businesses by working with them as they get ready to export goods and services. The trade office also sends a clear message that Arizona is welcoming and ready to do business. That’s a message we have to continue to drive home because in many ways we’re still making up for lost ground. From 2007 to 2012, Arizona was the only state in the country to see its exports fall. We must reverse that trend, and we’re better positioned than ever to do so. This was my ninth trade mission south of the border – and I’ll keep going because I know how important face-to-face meetings with business leaders and government officials are to putting our relationships and trade efforts back on track. The nearly 70 Arizona business and civic leaders who traveled with me know this too. Our work is already paying off: last year, Arizona’s exports to Mexico grew by 12 percent. But we can’t be satisfied with modest growth. I’m committed to increasing those numbers even more – we won’t let Phoenix fall behind. This was an important moment, but it’s hardly the end of our effort. We will work every day – with our partners locally and globally – to build an innovationbased, trade-focused economy that works for every Phoenix family.

Phoenix-based Misha Mendicino of Misha Mendicino Designs, the latest in boho chic resort couture with a passion for elephant conservation, has been awarded the coveted title of Emerging Designer of the Year. After four months of fashion boot camp, social media contests, runway shows and judges’ votes, Phoenix Fashion Week (www.phoenixfashionweek. com) chose Mendicino as the designer to watch, awarding her a prize package valued at over $10,000 to continue her fashions and spread her philanthropic message. Partnering with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a non-profit organization aimed at the preservation and protection of wildlife with an emphasis on elephant conservation, gives Mendicino that extra motivation to share her line and Boho Bunnie, photo by Justin Zangerle vision with others. A Wild West Days Welcome From Mayor Of Cave Creek

28

11.14

Mama never said I couldn’t grow up to be a cowboy. But growing up in central Pennsylvania on the banks of the Susquehanna River, just a carriage ride from Amish country, certainly limited my chances. Which is why I say, “Thank goodness, for Wild West Days.” One of Cave Creek’s signature events, hosted by the Cave Creek Merchants Association, Wild West Days will be celebrating its 11th renewal October 29 – November 2. Wild West Days gives you the excuse to air out those vintage Wranglers hanging in the closet; those one-time purchased cowboy boots that made you imagine yourself as the lead in Urban Cowboy and to dust off that Stetson that fashions you from silly looking city slicker into western chic, dropdead handsome cowboy. Wild West Days is where Disneyland two-steps with Alice in Wonderland. Wild West Days is the tonic, the cure for apathy, boredom or losing a horse race by a nose. The event is five days of unbridled fun, frivolity and family entertainment. Beginning with a pure horse parade (as in non-motorized) and cattle drive on Saturday, November 1, to mutton bustin’ (for kids) to bull riding (for big kids), to selection of Miss Wild West Days, to poker runs and horse and rodeo activities in the central arena and plenty of live music, there’s something for everyone. Everyone as in the entire family. It is a given that such events like Wild West Days, do not happen because you wish it so. It takes the effort of many volunteers, many hours to bring it about. As a participant/ spectator, you have the easy part: just join in and have fun. With a nod of appreciation, of course, to all the volunteers who made it possible. Mayor Vincent Francia, Town of Cave Creek

11TH ANNUAL WILD WEST DAYS RIDES INTO TOWN The annual Wild West Days extravaganza held in Cave Creek is a premiere destination event celebrating the town’s grand western heritage. With events taking place October 29 – November 2, the festival features non-stop family entertainment of mutton bustin’, music, a non-motorized western parade, various horse-related activities, golf tournament and other festivities, all focused on embracing the importance of keeping the West alive. The special CST Wild West Days section will highlight the many events taking place throughout the event – here are some of the highlights. • Bachelor/Bachelorette Auction at Buffalo Chip Saloon & Steakhouse • Stagecoach Village with live music, vendors, food trucks and more • Family-friendly fun at Frontier Town • Miss Wild West Days Meet & Greet Carnival and Cowgirl Couture Fashion Show at Corner at the Creek • Mutton Bustin’ at Buffalo Chip Saloon & Steakhouse • Miss Wild West Days at Harold’s Corral • Wild West Days Parade through Downtown Cave Creek • Live bull riding and horse-related activities throughout town Each year, the legendary cowboy artist Lance Headlee creates a one-of-a-kind, limited edition art poster for Wild West Days. Celebrate Wild West Days In Frontier Town You’ll have to get out of Phoenix and Scottsdale to get a taste of the Old West. One place to do this is Frontier Town, 6245 East Cave Creek Road in Cave Creek. The Town of Cave Creek itself is a throw-back to the early frontier days. Before gold miners and cattlemen settled this rustic area in the 1870s, the ancient Hohokam Indians roamed these parts from the about 1050 to about 1400 when these early inhabitants mysteriously left the area. Today, Frontier Town is located in the center of town. Yes, it’s mostly a replica of an Old West town, but the land it sits on carries a rich history and association to those days long past.

Although it’s a bit “touristy,” the flavor and aura still whispers of nostalgia. There is a long history behind the spawning of Frontier Town. Some is fact while some is legend that has evolved for almost 150 years. Here are a few of the Wild West Days events at Frontier Town: • Cave Creek v. Prescott Gunfight – Saturday, November 1; immediately following the Parade • Boy Scout Campfire Cook-off – All day Saturday • Bluegrass Band – Saturday from 10am-2pm at the front-entry • Arts & Crafts – East lot Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Life On The Cartwright Ranch By Dottie Cartwright Bird

Life on the Cartwright Ranch is difficult to put it into a few paragraphs. We lived in Central Phoenix while in school and lived at the ranch on weekends, holidays and all summer long. We had two creeks to swim in. Bronco Creek ran behind the bunk house, there was a big rock faced slide that would dump us into the creek. What a way to destroy a pair of jeans. Cave Creek Wash ran behind the main house and we also had a spring-fed tank with a dock. My brother Allen loved to play baseball, so he set up a baseball diamond in the field near the bunk house. I loved the times I could ride horses with my dad and the cowboys. At the end of the day’s ride, the cowboys (and horses) were most anxious to get back to headquarters. There was no holding back my horse so the ride back was rather fast. I was introduced to Rocky Mountain Oysters when I was very young. They were cooked in the camp fire and were so tasty! It was many years before I finally figured out why the cowboys were laughing when my brothers and I would fight over who would get the last one. My mother and father enjoyed reading the Sunday paper. Our Uncle Ted would fly from Phoenix and drop the paper in the field next to the corral. Uncle Ted would tie on a treat so that one of us kids would retrieve the paper for Mom and Dad. I want to give a big thank you to all of those who keep the history of Ranching, mining and the Town of Cave Creek alive. Special thanks to the Cave Creek Museum, Cartwright’s Restaurant and Johnny Ringo, Carefree Adventures.

In Support Of American Made Goods Custom hat shop leads the way Watson’s Hat Shop will be part of a nationwide event called American Made Matters Day November 19. This is an official day recognized by Congress. The American Made Matters (AMM) organization was started by the CEO of one of the hat factories that Watson’s retails, and all of Watson’s custom hats are 100 percent American made. To celebrate the day, the shop, as an ambassador of the organization, will display American Made Matters banners and other displays, in addition to offering snacks and refreshments. The American Made movement continues to grow, according to AMM founder and president Don Rongione. “Americans are buying more U.S. made products,” says Rongione. “More American and foreign companies are beginning production in the U.S. and companies are returning some or all of their manufacturing to the U.S. Yet many still struggle to compete. Loss of manufacturing means loss of independence, increased product safety concerns, weaker local communities and more citizens in need. We cannot rely on our government for the solution. We take control of our future with each purchase.” Watson’s Hat Shop is located at 6140 East Cave Creek Road in Cave Creek. For more information, call 602.419.6436 or visit www.watsonshatshop.com.

Thanksgiving made its American debut in 1621, an impromptu gathering of recently arrived Pilgrims and native Wampanoag. However, it was not until 200 years later that Thanksgiving was elevated to national holiday status by President Lincoln during the Civil War in 1863. Although Thursday was the marker day and November the month, the MAYOR Town of Cave Creek holiday bounced Thursday around within the month until finally settling on the fourth Thursday. 480.488.1400 www.cavecreek.org Cave Creek has much for which to be thankful. How many communities can say they wake up to the visual splendor and wonder of what we do every day? No resident tires of aviary, daybreak song diversity, the wilder, larger prowl-animals or the breathtaking sunrises/sets and planetarium-like night skies. And that’s just our natural blessings. Cave Creek also has an enviable lifestyle. Rural may be as dated as a Norman Rockwell Saturday Evening Post cover, but it’s alive, thriving and current in Cave Creek. Who didn’t want to be a cowboy/girl when they were a kid? Our horses buck and whinny, our cowboys are real, authentic and when they speak, they do so with a Made in USA drawl. The community has been a haven for artists and musicians since its founding in 1860. The Town inspired then and does so now. This community we call home is unique. We celebrate it. We share it. And on Thanksgiving Day we are grateful. On behalf of the Town Council and staff we wish the best to our citizens and to our neighbors in nearby communities during this Thanksgiving season.

Cave Creek Museum is offering a chance to discover ancient ruins and see a historic stamp mill in action during two November events. A geology hike, “What do Our Rocks Tell Us About the Past Two Billion Years in Cave Creek?” will be held Saturday, November 8 from 1:30-4:30pm. Meet at the Cave Creek Museum, 6140 Skyline Drive in Cave Creek, and then caravan to geological sites selected by Tom McGuire, Earth Science educator and author. In a few locations, participants will walk as much as 100 yards along rocky (dry) washes. Sneakers/running shoes are fine (no sandals) for this easy to moderate hike. Expect uneven rocky ground, but no significant climbing. This is an event for the whole family. No special science background is needed. There will be about 10 stops, all within Cave Creek. A magnifying lens will be handy. Bring water and sunscreen. The cost is $25 per family; reservations are required. The Miner’s Dinner will be held Tuesday, November 11, from 4:308:30pm. Guests will be transported back in time as they dine outside by the Museum’s historic “Golden Reef” Stamp Mill that is believed to date back to 1880. Attendees will have a chance to see the fully operational stamp mill in action – the only operational 10-stamp mill in the state (and the only stamp mill in Maricopa County). Guests will also be able to see a blacksmith at work. A Dutch-oven dinner will be patterned after that of a traditional miner’s fare. Cowboy balladeer Mike Ewing will perform and guests can also bid on silent and live auction items. Stamp Miller demonstrations will be held 4-5pm (free viewing for public). The cost $50 per person. Reservations requested as seating is limited. For details, call 480.488.2764 or visit www.cavecreekmuseum.org.

Lecture Opportunity “End of the Anasazi: the Fall of Chaco Canyon and the Mesa Verde Migrations” is a presentation by Stephen H. Lekson, Ph.D. that outlines what some think of as the disappearance of the prehistoric Anasazi (pre-puebloan) peoples. Lekson is currently University of Colorado, Boulder Curator of Archaeology, Museum of Natural History and Professor of Anthropology. The general Four Corners area time frame are the last two centuries before 1300, the 12th and 13th centuries. The focus of the presentation encompasses the history of Chaco Canyon, Aztec Ruins and Mesa Verde. The events of these centuries culminated in the out-migration of tens of thousands of “Anasazi” or Ancestral Pueblo peoples from the Four Corners area and result in the origins of Pueblos as they exist today. These three areas are deemed culturally important today and can be visited under National Park Service protection: Chaco Culture National Historic Park (NM), Aztec Ruins National Monument (NM), and Mesa Verde National Park (CO). The general public may attend this Arizona Archaeology Society – Desert Foothills Chapter meeting November 12 at no charge. The AAS-DFC meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month, September through May. There are refreshments available and the meeting begins at 7pm, usually ending prior to 9pm. This special engagement is in the Holland Center (Foothills Community Center), 34250 North 60th Street, Building B, Scottsdale. For information, visit www.azarchsoc.org/desertfoothills.

Let the festivals and events begin! On October 31 through November 2, Carefree will host the first of three Thunderbird Festivals of Fine Art and Wine. This juried show draws visitors from across the country for a selection of over 150 artists. On Tuesday, November 11, please MAYOR join us for our annual Salute to Veterans Town of Carefree at 3pm. This event has become a 480.488.3686 tradition in the Sanderson Lincoln www.carefree.org Pavilion on Easy Street. We welcome all veterans to Carefree to recognize your service to our country. World War I began in August, 1914, and ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 – Armistice Day. The Sonoran Art League Hidden in the Hills tour occurs on the third and fourth weekends in November. Many artists in Carefree are open for this event. The annual Southwestern Festival of Fine Art and Fine Crafts is November 28 through November 30. We expect over 100 exhibitors in our Carefree Desert Garden. And for the long range planners, let me mention the Carefree Christmas Festival December 12-14 and our new free Sunday afternoon concerts in February and March. I invite you to come to Carefree where we have shops, restaurants and festivals for your enjoyment.

Carefree Christmas Is Coming To Town The Seventh Annual Carefree Christmas Festival jingles all the way into Downtown Carefree December 12-14. Residents and visitors alike will enjoy three days and two nights of free holiday festivities and entertainment as the Carefree Desert Gardens on Easy Street turns into an illuminated winter wonderland – revel in 35 tons of real snow, shop the Christmas gift and food market, listen to live music and carolers, bring your pet for the Sunday pet parade, enjoy a Kid’s Zone, take a horse-drawn carriage ride and pay a visit to Santa. “The festival has become one of the most well-attended holiday events in the Valley because it brings out the child in all who attend. It is reminiscent of a traditional Christmastime of years past,” says Jo Gemmill of Carefree. Gemmill is the director and founder of the event. According to Gemmill, the festival relies heavily on generous corporate and small business sponsorships to fund the event. Several important sponsors have signed on this year, including APS who will make possible the Festival’s signature event, Saturday night’s Electric Light Parade. Sanderson Lincoln on Bell Road will present a snow slide and 35 tons of real snow, and local Carefree businessman, Chris Mellon of Chris Mellon & Company, is sponsoring the always popular Kid’s Zone. Discount Tire has also signed on to be a supporter this year, according to Gemmill. For more information, call 480.488.2051 or visit www.carefreechristmasfestival.com.

Candles Of The Desert

Allen Nohre lives in Carefree with his wife, Kathie. He is a writer at Terros and can be reached at anohre@cox.net.

Serving the Community Since 2002

I never tire looking at a saguaro cactus, that strange and fascinating tree-like plant of the high Sonoran Desert, that is only found in Arizona, Sonora Mexico and a couple of places in California. Visitors to Carefree and Cave Creek love to stand beside them and have their ALLEN NOHRE photos taken. Vermont has its maple trees but we treasure our saguaros. The Latin name for Writer the saguaro cactus is Carnegiea gigantea, which means gigantic candle. For 14 years Kathie and I have wondered and worried about the big, old saguaro in our backyard. We refer to it as “he.” We estimate he’s over 100 years old and stands over 35 feet tall with some arms reaching up to the sky and other arms that strangely twist down toward the ground with an overall leftward lean. We treasure and love him, but after watching him for a few years we began to call him “old stupid” because when he developed more arms on his leaning side, we feared weight and gravity would cause him to crash to the ground. We dreaded and hoped it wouldn’t happen, but it did. Last month, “old stupid” collapsed and busted into many heavy pieces, lying scattered on the ground. Over the years, the saguaro was home to Gila woodpeckers and other birds that built nests inside and raised their families. We felt part of a family and a growing community. Now, when we look in his direction, there is a bare spot where he lived for decades and there is a bare spot in our hearts. I hope he knew how much we enjoyed looking at him and I hope he knew we called him “old stupid” because of our affection for him. Our gigantic candle has gone out and now that he’s gone, he is a reminder of how our soul connection to nature can illuminate and enrich our lives.

The Carefree Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce announces its 50th anniversary and a new, comprehensive Community Guide and Services Directory. The newly expanded and updated, 64-page directory features an historical glimpse of the Carefree and Cave Creek communities, along with a current business and services offering. Photographs throughout the magazine-style publication illustrate milestones within the past 50 years. The publication includes three major sections including a Visitor’s Guide, a Relocation Guide and a Chamber Member Business Directory, says executive director Patty Villeneuve. Other sections include recreation, sightseeing, history, arts and culture, dining and shopping, restaurant and dining, live entertainment, lodging, education,

housing and population, services and organizations, health care, where to worship and more. A map of the community, along with maps of Cave Creek Regional Park and the Spur Cross Conservation Area are also included. This year, the publication was produced locally, and the attention to detail is apparent, says Villeneuve. “We believe in shopping locally. The best talent resides in our own communities. By hiring local businesses, we were able to get contributors who intimately knew the subjects in their own community, and that is reflected in the high quality of the publication.” The free guide is available at the Chamber’s Visitor Center, 748 Easy Street in Carefree or by calling 480.488.3381. Feeding Phoenix Campaign Kicks Off Phoenix Rescue Mission, a faith-based nonprofit organization that provides life-transforming solutions to persons facing hunger and homelessness, launched its “Feeding Phoenix: More than a Meal” campaign at the beginning of October. The campaign, which runs through December 31, includes several holiday events aimed at collecting food, water, blankets, sleeping bags and other items for the homeless during the holidays. “We want to instill hope in those who are cold, hungry and living on the streets, especially during the holidays when homeless individuals are at greater risk of depression and increased abuse of alcohol and drugs,” says Jay Cory, Phoenix Rescue Mission president and CEO. “Many also are

estranged from their families either due to an addiction or an illness, and sometimes just one hot meal can give them the comfort they need to get through these tough times.” Arizona ranks as the fourth worst state in the nation for homelessness, with more than 13,000 homeless men, women and children in Maricopa County alone. To lift their spirits during the holidays, “Feeding Phoenix: More than a Meal” will be in high gear collecting food, water, blankets, socks, sleeping bags, toys, monetary donations and other items at drop-off locations throughout the Valley. For a complete list of items needed, drop-off locations and collection events, call 602.233.3000 or visit www.phoenixrescuemission.org.

Diamond Canyon Wins McTeacher’s Night Challenge The Anthem McDonald’s restaurant, located at 3623 West Anthem Way, raised $2,200 for local elementary schools. The restaurant, owned by Gordon Schrage, hosted a month-long McTeacher’s Night Challenge in September for five elementary schools including Canyon Springs, Gavilan Peak, North Valley Christian Academy, Anthem and Diamond Canyon. For the second consecutive year, Diamond Canyon Elementary School won the “McTeacher’s Night Challenge” raising the most money with its fundraiser and received a $1,000 prize. As part of McTeacher’s Night, a portion of McDonald’s sales during a two-hour period benefited each school. The school’s principal and teachers “worked” at McDonald’s greeting customers, working the registers. Families of students and local school supporters visited McDonald’s and tipped their teachers to help raise funds. Anthem McDonald’s owner/operator Gordon Schrage presented checks to each of the school’s principals last month during a reception at the Anthem McDonald’s restaurant. “We were delighted to bring this McTeacher’s Night Challenge to the Anthem community for the third consecutive year and work with our local schools to raise money for education,” says Schrage.

Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) is fortunate to have outstanding students, teachers and support staff as well as specialized programs that make us stand out across Arizona and the nation. Richard Maxwell, the Contemporary Sound and Music teacher at Arcadia High School, has been selected as one of the 25 semifinalists for the Music Educator Award presented by The Recording Academy and the DR. DAVID PETERSON GRAMMY Foundation. Superintendent Newsweek Magazine recently published its 2014 Scottsdale Unified School District America’s Top High School List. I am pleased to announce that Chaparral High School is ranked 22nd in the nation. According to newsweek.com, Newsweek’s 2014 Rankings highlight schools that do the absolute best job of preparing students for college. A complete list is available at www.newsweek.com/high-schools/americas-top-schools-2014. I am proud to announce that this year, SUSD had 31 National Merit Semifinalists and 45 Commended Students. These dedicated students worked hard to deserve this recognition. We are proud of all of our students and the success they are achieving. SUSD has 29 students who were selected to participate on the Scottsdale Mayor’s Youth Council. We have student representation from all five high schools and Scottsdale Online Learning. The Scottsdale Mayor’s Youth Council aims to educate, motivate and empower Scottsdale youth through experience in leadership, knowledge of local government and experience in group decision making. You can make a tax credit donation that can be claimed when filing your 2014 State Income Taxes. Your donation supports education and will be used for before and after school programs, music competitions, tutoring, field trips, overnight trips and athletic programs. Presented by the Arizona Wine Growers Association, the Festival at the Farm is the place to meet grape farmers, wine producers and try dozens of Arizona wines close to home. Wineries from around the state will be pouring their wines on November 15, 12-5pm, at the annual festival. The picturesque setting of Phoenix’ historic The Farm at South Mountain provides a beautiful backdrop to enjoy music, a boxed lunch under the pecan trees, workshops, specialty local products, silent/live auction and of course, great Arizona wine. The evening before (November 14, 6-8pm) winemakers and wine enthusiasts gather to celebrate Arizona wines as The Arizona Republic announces the award winning wines from the annual competition. Enjoy passed and stationed hors d’ouevres paired with the award-winning wines at Quiessence at The Farm Restaurant. Cost for each event includes food, wine tastings and entertainment, and is $75. Purchase tickets early for discounts at www.azwinefestivalatthefarm.com/ about.html. The Farm at South Mountain is located at 32nd Street and Southern in Phoenix. Amputees looking to play standup basketball games now have the chance with the launching of the StandUp Amputee Basketball League at the Virginia G. Piper Sports & Fitness Center for Persons with Disabilities (SpoFit), a program of Arizona Bridge to Independent Living (ABIL). SpoFit is located at 5031 East Washington Street at the Disability Empowerment Center. The league is sponsored by Touchstone Rehabilitation with support from the D Banks Foundation. Founder David Banks, an above-the-knee amputee of 15 years, developed the organization to “empower amputees and to provide aid in obtaining quality prosthetics to those in financial need.” Games, which began last month, will be played Wednesdays from 6:309pm. Basketball is free for SpoFit members. Adult non-members will be sponsored on alternating weeks by Touchstone Rehabilitation and D Banks Foundation. Non-amputees also are welcome to participate. SpoFit vice president and general manager Gus LaZear said the goal of StandUp Amputee Basketball League organizers “is to have enough players to develop a competitive league of individuals who want not only to play ball but to give back to the community and empower others to live without limits.” “It’s not just about empowering those with disabilities but also about empowering people in general to realize that anything can be achieved with determination and will,” Banks added. To enroll or for more information, contact LaZear at gusl@abil.org or Banks at david@dbanksfoundation.org or visit www.spofit.org.

CATHY DROZ

Car Corner ~ High Heels Certified

An Empty Nester Getaway ~ 2014 Audi A6 2.0T Quattro Tiptronic When a beautiful ice silver metallic Audi A6 materialized in my driveway on delivery day, the first thing I thought was “Where can I take this that is “cool” enough for such a car?” Lucky for me I already knew the perfect outing…a local Scottsdale resort for a girl’s sleepover/spa mini-vacation. Yes, this little baby was going to feel right at home in the underground garage of the Montelucia Resort. Driving the Audi, staying at the Montelucia resort really made me feel I was in Europe. Something about a Spa and a bunch of women and driving a German car with no husbands around was a real getaway or fantasy.

ASK MR. MODEM www.MrModem.net

Transmit Super-Large Files Q. I have approximately 100 pictures from a recent vacation that I would like to e-mail to others. What program should I use for this? A. Unless you know your intended recipients very well, that’s a lot of photos to inflict upon anybody. 100 vacation photos equal 400 non-vacation photos to anybody who did not accompany you on the trip.

A Few Of Your Favorite Things This month’s winning shot was submitted by Ron Cline of Fountain Hills, who says, “We provide plants that provide seeds for these quail and a water supply that they visit every morning and evening. This mated pair are showing us this year’s new hatch and teaching them how to get water. Sometimes they would rather swim in it than drink it. These garden residents are a source of great joy for us all year long.” This year’s contest is all about your favorites – whether it is a person, place or thing. Snap a photo and send us a brief description of why your “favorite” is so special. In addition to a prize giveaway, the winning photo will be on the cover of the January 2015 issue. When submitting your photo, please include your full name, contact number and what area you live in. Submit your digital photo to news@ CITYSunTimes.com with “My Best Shot” in the subject line. The photo should be high resolution and at least 800x600 in size.
