message

from the

department

Our Parks & Recreation Department is pleased to present the 2019 Play Plan. It is our goal to provide the citizens of Winter Park with the best in parks and recreational programming. As part of our effort to furnish an excellent variety and selection of recreational opportunities, our department has met and exceeded the requirements of the Commission for Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). The city’s Parks & Recreation Department is one of only 145 other departments nationwide that can claim the highest level of performance recognized in the professional field of parks and recreation. We invite you to read our Annual Play Plan, visit our facilities, and experience our commitment to a healthy and active lifestyle that is available in Winter Park. ~ Your Parks & Recreation Team

do you know

about this park? As Winter Park’s crown jewel, Central Park is the centerpiece to not only our department but to the entire city. This beautiful gathering space is where you can find a quiet place to read, a family having a picnic with their children, an evening movie, an internationally-renowned art show and so much more. It was deeded to the city on April 6, 1906, by Charles Hosmer Morse. The plaque (shown right) is found in the south portion of the park, and was donated by the Friends of Central Park on November 20, 1986, honoring the life and generosity of Mr. Morse. The plaque reads: “Charles Hosmer Morse was born in 1833 in St. Johnsbury Center, Vermont. From 1883 until his death in 1921, he considered Winter Park his second home. His vision and generosity are responsible for much of its beauty today. The park which surrounds you is one of his benefactions. Charles Hosmer Morse was one of the pioneers who gave this community the character which brought so much happiness to so many. Dedicated by Friends of Central Park, November 20, 1986.”

Be sure to visit the park, have a seat on a bench, and absorb the amazing character of our city. Just look and listen, and you will soon see how this park is indeed our crown jewel!

family FUN!

11 Established in March 2018, the department’s Family Fun Program has offered multiple free events for families and children. The program’s main objective is to focus on promoting a series of events that encourages healthy families and fun recreational activities at various parks throughout the city. The Family Fun Program was not only established to bring awareness to all of the great parks in Winter Park, but to bring families closer together and have an “unplugged” afternoon filled with laughter, creativity and love. From the start of the Family Fun Program, there has been over 30 events and a great deal of happy faces and family enjoyment. Ward Park

Featuring three multipurpose sports fields, a stocked fishing lake, great playground, one half-mile walking path and an outdoor fitness experience, this 28-acre park is very popular. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park is located at the corner of Denning Drive and Morse Boulevard. Be sure to visit and walk the path as you will see a number of water birds in the lake!

The George Morgan Ward Memorial Park, more commonly known as Ward Park, is extremely active. Nearly every sport including soccer, lacrosse, football, basketball, tennis and track, has a place in this 66-acre property. The newly reconfigured, computer-controlled lighted fields maintain regulation sizing for most sports which has enabled even more teams to schedule games and practices.

Over 346 acres of parks properties are maintained by our department. An additional 56 acres of properties such as medians, rights of way, city building grounds and parking lots are also the responsibility of the Parks Maintenance Division.

Golfview Park Located off Webster, just East of Park Avenue, this unique mini park is the centerpiece to a beautiful enclave of homes. It was platted in 1921 with the neighborhood and has served as the gathering place for neighbors ever since. It features a fountain that was designed, built and installed by Howard G. Lindsay, the same fountain designer who donated the Veterans Memorial Fountain in Central Park.

winter park golf course The Winter Park Golf Course has experienced rave reviews after a $1.2 million renovation project a few years ago. Built in 1914, the historic course underwent some much needed repairs in 2016. New fairways, rough and greens, combined with a state-of-the-art irrigation system and a redesign by Keith Rhebb and Riley Johns of Integrative Golf, brought this second oldest course in Orlando back to its glory days as a central Florida gem. So much so that The Golf Channel® and Golf Advisor® both named it the “5th Best Short Course” in the entire country. The course is also featured in The Finest Nines, a new book from author Anthony Pioppi and Sky Horse Publications. It celebrates the best nine hole golf courses in North America that was released February 2018. The course itself is unique in many ways. It is a nine hole walking course topping out at around 2500 yards from the tips. Although there are a few electric carts available for senior and disabled players, most players prefer to take a pull cart and stroll the fairways while enjoying the surroundings. It is the true definition of urban golf as road traffic and the occasional train are very common sights during a round, but seem to blend seamlessly with the majestic oaks, Baptist church and cemetery that also envelop the property. Golfers will

even cross the street six times during their nine hole trek. The golf shop has a wide variety of merchandise to choose from as well as plenty of snacks and beverages for you to enjoy during or after a round. Since re-opening, the course launched the City Amateur Golf Championship. In May, close to 80 golfers, young and old, participated in the second annual event with a two-round, 18-hole gross play competition. The response to the event has been fantastic and will be a feather in the cap of the city for many years to come. The course also experienced a resurgence of glow golf by investing in the newest state-of-the-art equipment to play golf at night. Private groups, non-profits and corporations hosted fundraisers, team building events, and holiday parties under the stars at the course, offering their guests a unique experience in the heart of Winter Park. Night golf was so popular, the course started hosting WP9 After Dark every Tuesday night, November through March. The course is open every day except Christmas and a few periodic maintenance days. Start times can be made up to three days in advance for the general public. Members can make start times up to seven days in advance. Rates range from $13 to $21 per round, annual memberships start at $900, and the course is available to rent for private events including WP9 After Dark. For more information, please contact the pro shop at 407-599-3419.

There are many places in Winter Park’s parks system that meet the need of just about everyone. fitness trails Lake Baldwin Park

Fishing is allowed (with a freshwater fishing license) and very popular in most city parks. Lake Mendsen, in Martin Luther King, Jr. Park at Denning Drive and Morse Boulevard is a great fishing spot. It is stocked by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission primarily with channel catfish. Largemouth Bass, bluegill, sunfish and blue tilapia can also be found. There is a 14” minimum size for keeping the bass and a five bass limit in this lake. Other species have no size limit and the maximum for keeping is 50 fish. Be sure to attend our annual “Test the Waters” Fishing Tournament for children, held the first Saturday in October and no fishing license is required. And don’t forget that fishing is also popular at Dinky Dock Park and Kraft Azalea Garden.

Located along a 3-mile path that is used for biking, walking and skating. This path surrounds Lake Baldwin.

Howell Branch Preserve A 1/5-mile paved path features 10 exercise stations. The park has natural scenery to enjoy on your walk from sunrise to sunset.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Park A 1/2-mile walking path nicely decorated and features a fitness area with hydraulic fitness equipment such as cardio stepper, chest and back press, and ab crunch from sunrise to sunset.

Ward Park A 1/3-mile trail features fitness stations that are geared toward our senior population, but can be used by all ages. Included are a bench stepper, balance station and forearm rolls.

There are two municipal cemeteries that are managed by the Parks & Recreation Department. Palm Cemetery is located at New York and Webster avenues and is 17 acres. Pineywood Cemetery is located at Lakemont and Glenridge avenues and is 11 acres. With over 18,750 grave spaces in total, these cemeteries have served our community since the late 1800s.

palm&pineywood cemeteries

Palm Cemetery In 1906, Loring Chase deeded property over to the City of Winter Park to be specifically used as a cemetery and requested that the southeast corner to be used for his burial. He was buried there August 24, 1906, and his marble obelisk that stands over five feet tall can still be seen today. The inscription memorializes his historical importance to the city as “one of the founders of Winter Park in 1881.”

Pineywood Cemetery Pineywood Cemetery was established in 1890 and is the oldest cemetery in Winter Park. Formerly managed by the Pineywood Cemetery Association, the cemetery was deeded back over to the city in 1970. A rich history of Winter Park is recorded on the markers with the names of families who are at rest in Pineywood. The cemetery represents the city’s history, its people and families.

Memorial pages On our website, we have an online memorial page with multiple personalization options that allows you to preserve your family’s legacy for generations to come.
