Atlantic Regional Champions How They Got There

“No. 5 Seed Wins Atlantic Regional” By Dan LeBatard, Miami Herald “Most people,” University of Miami pitcher Jeff Alkine said softly Tuesday afternoon, “have never even heard of The Citadel.” Most people have probably never heard of Chris Coker, Tony Skole or Brad Stowell, either. But the Crew Cut Kids from that unglamorous, unknown, underdog military school at Charleston, S.C., did the unbelievable Tuesday afternoon, winning the Atlantic Regional with a surprisingly easy 4-1 victory over top-seeded Unviersity of Miami before 2,157 startled fans at Mark Light Stadium.

Conference Tournament. The success of the tournament brought a threeyear commitment from the league’s athletic directors (the start of a 19-year run where the Holy City hosted the tournament).

April 28 – Chal Port earns his 600th career victory as the Bulldogs pick up two wins and advance to the championship game of the SoCon Tournament. April 29 – Gettys Glaze hits the first of two home runs of his career as The Citadel runs up a 6-0 lead and holds on for a 9-5 victory over Western Carolina and the Dogs’ first SoCon Tournament title. In one of the greatest sights of the 1990 season, Glaze warmed up in the Bulldog bullpen wearing his shin guards (he was catching at the time and loosened up while the Dogs were batting). Glaze, in addition to his batting heroics, picked up the save against the Catamounts. A then-SoCon Tournament record crowd of 3,186 cheers the Bulldogs on to victory.

They Said It The Citadel Head Coach Chal Port

“We might not have all the talent that the other teams might have but the whole on this team is better than the parts.” “I really think that because we’re a military school and our players are confronted with stressful situations in school as cadets, it conditions them to handle pressure better and we handled the pressure of playing Miami in Miami very well.” “Now we just have to figure out how to celebrate. We’ve got a 10-hour bus ride back to Charleston so maybe we’ll sing or something.”

May 21 – In a telephone hookup, The Citadel’s first-round opponent in the Atlantic Regional is announced to a press conference assembled at Johnson Hagood Stadium. The Bulldogs learn that they will travel to Miami, Fla., and play North Carolina State, a team they split two games with earlier in the season, in the first round of regional play. The Dogs were seeded fifth and grouped with the top seed and host school Miami, the Wolfpack, East Carolina, Stetson and South Florida in the six-team regional.

May 21 – After receiving word of their regional assignment, The Citadel finished its pre-regional tune-up with an 11-2 victory over another NCAA playoff-bound team in Clemson at College Park. May 22 – With fans gathered on campus to wish the team luck, the Bulldogs depart Charleston by bus for the 10-hour ride to Miami. Assistant coach Ken Creehan shows up wearing a University of Miami baseball cap to inspire the Dogs. Continued on P. 24
