BULLDOGS IN THE PROS Nehemiah Broughton Washington Redskins
The Citadel boasts several players who have gone on to professional football careers, including NFL greats Greg Davis (1987-99), Paul Maguire (1960-70) and Stump Mitchell (1981-88). Just two seasons ago, another Bulldog made his way into the professional ranks as running back Nehemiah Broughton was selected in the seventh round of the NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. Broughton was the first Bulldog drafted since Travis Jervey was selected in 1995 by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round. With the drafting of Broughton by the Redskins, The Citadel has now had three players in as many years go on to the NFL. Three seasons ago, Cliff Washburn signed a free agent contract with the New York Giants and went on to sign a two-year deal with the Chicago Bears. Just recently he was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys. Two seasons ago, Lew Dawson earned a freeagent contract with the Cleveland Browns, while both Washburn and Dawson spent the spring playing in NFL Europe.
