That’s exactly where they began! As Licking County’s professional summer theater, Weathervane got its name from that original home, with a production of “Good News!” in 1969. The news just kept getting better for the company and their audiences, moving from a barn to a big tent to their location on the northern edge of Newark in 1976. The current mainstage building was built in 1989, and last summer added a special effect earlier theatergoers would have appreciated: air conditioning! When you drive up to Weathervane Playhouse, maybe having already reserved your seats through weathervaneplayhouse.org, you’ll see a complex of buildings set back from Price Road which evoke the barns and simplicity of those early days. Inside, you’ll find a sophisticated and complex operation, which has delightfully handled major Broadway musicals or simple children’s theater with equal ease. Whether it’s been “Fiddler on the Roof” or “Big River,” “Sweet Charity” or “Into the Woods,” you get a marvelous blend of acting by professionals who come from New York, Chicago, and elsewhere, along with local talent who live in Licking County all year ‘round. They are teachers and bankers and secretaries, but there’s usually no good way to tell the professionals and the locals apart, unless you recognize one of them from waiting in line with you in the store last winter! Heading into the air conditioned season of 2012, Weathervane plans to offer: “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” the musical based on a 1988 Steve Martin/Michael Caine movie; the comedy “Leading Ladies”; everyone’s favorite musical “Singin’ in the Rain”; London’s famously long-running drama/mystery “Mousetrap”; and closing with “Legally Blonde - The Musical” (all shows tentative pending their licensing agreements). With matinees and special productions, almost any time you’re looking for a quality evening’s entertainment, and many weekend afternoons as well, you can find a show worth “taking in” at Weathervane Playhouse. They may have Broadway sophistication in their stagecraft, but the barn-inspired architecture reminds you that they haven’t lost touch with their local roots and over 40 summers of history. www.weathervaneplayhouse.org www.escapetolickingcounty.com ✦ Discover 9 Arts Buckeye Valley Opry Granville Studio of Visual Arts 2300 National Road SW Hebron, Ohio 43025 (740) 504-8100 www.americanbluegrass.org Live traditional American bluegrass music, the house of bluegrass has several shows each month. CENTRAL OHIO TECHNICAL COLLEGE www.escapetolickingcounty.com âœŚ Golf 13 The Ancient Ohio Trail Connections. We see the obvious ones on the landscape, the roads and signs and directional signals. We carry visible connections to the terrain we cross, in the form of maps and brochures and handwritten notes in the margins of guidebooks. Nowadays we start to become aware of an invisible, virtual level of connectedness: our smart phones chirp, our in-car GPS device chides us about preparing for a turn up ahead, the satellite radio plays music while the kids in the back play video games. 2,000 years ago, most of these tangible and intangible connections didn’t exist, but the Native American people who lived in these valleys and hills felt a strong connection to the land, and to each other. Only recently, scholars have started to realize just how widely those cultural connections went, across boundaries now forgotten, over great distances, with a “Great Hopewell Road” likely connecting Newark to Chillicothe, some 60 miles. Looking at their material culture, the “stuff” that is left from those days, and finding obsidian from the Yellowstone region or copper from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, all brought and used here in Ohio, and you realize: there were some truly long distance connections in those days. Connections. Today, thanks to work that involves both the University of Cincinnati and The Ohio State University, those ancient and modern connections are coming together in something called the “Ancient Ohio Trail.” This project is a collaboration of the Newark Earthworks Center (NEC) of OSU, and UC’s Center for the Electronic Reconstruction of Historical and Archaeological Sites (CERHAS). 14 With the support of a National Endowment for the Humanities grant, the two programs are developing a set of connections, a trail through what is called the “Heartland of Ancient America,” by way of a website at www.ancientohiotrail.org. Connecting sites in Newark, Chillicothe, Serpent Mound, Fort Ancient, and other nearby communities, the Ancient Ohio Trail is a tool to more fully appreciate the often hidden majesty of 1,000 and 2,000 year old Native American achievements, something the NEC calls “Native knowledge written on the land.” CERHAS has already developed computer recreations of sites now damaged or obscured, and enhanced even prominent sites with virtual visualizations of how they once looked in their landscape as they were first built. These electronic reconstructions are already serving the Ohio Historical Society in a number of their museums, and along with podcast narrations, smart phone games, and other modern technology, the achievements of ancient technology jump suddenly into new focus. When you use the resources from the Ancient Ohio Trail, it’s as if you’ve . . . made a connection, one that spans both southern Ohio, and across the millennia. Also included in the still-growing number of maps, videos, and other applications in the website, you can find suggestions and guidance for finding inns, restaurants, and other historic-era sites along the way between the key ancient sites. After all, the past is a fascinating place to connect with, and visit, but you probably don’t want to live there! You can find the best of both modern life and ancient wisdom as you follow the paths of the Ancient Ohio Trail. You’ll also notice that the lawns are covered with carefully drawn white lines – and at the right time, perhaps a few hundred young people in soccer shoes and colorful jerseys flying about with abandon and joy. Alford-Reese Park is home to the Newark Area Soccer Association. In Licking County, you quickly find that a reference to “NASA” is not as likely to be about a rocket launch as it is in reference to this place. Keith Loughlin is the program director of NASA, and along with his assistant, Scott Nicholls, their offices oversee a soccer “pitch” that can be arranged as 16 full-size fields, or 30 to 40 smaller ones for the younger teams. A thousand kids a year are part of NASA, with 80 to 100 teams in any given year from ages 4 to 18. “We want our location to be inviting and welcoming to families, because we know they spend a whole lot of time here,” says Loughlin. “So we let people know there’s the bike path network nearby, of course there’s shopping right around the corner, but once you’re here and your child’s team is playing, we’ve helped 26 create a positive environment where, between the white lines, it’s their time.” Loughlin sees youth soccer as a place for expression as much as it is an athletic contest. “Our kids like that they’re in a competitive sport, but they also live for that moment out there on the field. That’s what we try to teach – enjoy the time you have here! Win or lose, if we’ve created that environment, everyone, parents, siblings, our soccer players all leave feeling good about the time they’ve spent.” Out-of-town teams often get to appreciate the scenic beauty and excellent facilities of Alford-Reese Field, with NASA hosting the “Buckeye Cup” each year for more than 80 teams ranging from 8 to 14 years old. The Xtabi program, with a name derived from a Jamaican term for “good people,” is aimed at skill development for slightly older players, ages 8 to 19. Xtabi teams travel widely, as in: globally! But this is the field they come home to, and where they give back: “So much has been given to us by the community, so we give back to the community,” Loughlin says proudly. Xtabi and other soccer teams have a growing range of service projects that take the spirit of “good people” from the soccer pitch out into Licking County, and beyond. www.newarkareasoccer.org Greater Licking County convention & visitors bureau Sports & Recreation Advantage Fitness Clubs 140 Derby Downs Road Newark, Ohio 43055 (740) 366-0104 1845 West Main Street Newark, Ohio 43055 (740) 522-8324 www.theadvantageclub.com Open year round, full-service health club with complete cardio & strength equipment, racquetball, tennis, basketball, season pool, saunas, locker rooms, and childcare.
