elcome back! Doesn’t it feel like life begins anew somewhere around Labor Day? For some it’s the start of football; for others the end of the vacation season; others begin to close up their cabins. But for most of us, whatever our age, the iconic picture of a “new year” is the school year. Parent or not, there’s something both exciting and nostalgic about watching kids get on the school bus the first day—the look of joy at seeing friends, of uncertainty they’re trying to mask, of excitement about the adventures ahead. How do we keep that sense of a fresh start? What will make our experiences remain fresh amidst all the good times and the struggles, the failures and successes, new friends and breakups? How will this “fresh start” really stay new—to the kids but also to us? I find I hunger for the sense of new beginnings the school year promises; in fact, it’s one of the key reasons I came to trust in Jesus as a college student—that desire to claim the promise of a “different kind of life.” The very first Bible verse I ever memorized spoke of Paul’s longing for a fresh start: “So whatever it takes, I will be one who lives in the fresh newness of life of those who are alive from the dead” (Philippians 3:11, The Living Bible).

What sustains the fresh newness of life? For the Apostle Paul, it was learning to put aside everything else besides knowing Christ, and then seeing the world through His eyes . . . the same eyes that had been raised from the dead! “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance” (Ephesians 1:18).

“We need the ongoing touch of God, a sense of connection where God actually speaks to our hearts.” If we want to continue to see the world afresh after the first day of school—intentionally refusing to return to the humdrum of the same old thing—we need to find out how to keep fresh eyes, right? We need the ongoing touch of God, a sense of connection where God actually speaks to our hearts. So for the second year in a row, I’d like to refresh our ability to speak to God, to hear God speak louder than the chatter of our lives. The Psalms are the prayer book of the

Bible, where God speaks and we respond, where we learn how to converse with our Creator. To paraphrase Eugene Peterson: There is a difference between praying to an unknown God whom we hope to discover in our praying, and praying to a known God— revealed through Israel and Jesus Christ—who speaks our language. In the first, we indulge our appetite for religious fulfillment; in the second we practice obedient faith. The first is a lot more fun, the second is a lot more important. What is essential in prayer is not that we learn to express ourselves, but that we learn to answer God. In other words, if we want “the fresh newness of life of those alive from the dead,” we need to learn to talk to someone who’s actually, well, risen from the dead! Let’s do this together!

W E DN E S DAY N IGHT R E F R E S H ! This fall, CPC is launching The Junction, a new format for our Wednesday night kids’ programs. The biggest change is that we are now offering a meal at our Dinner Depot— all in hopes that this will give families with students of all ages more flexibility and ease on busy school days. And we continue offering Choir Court and grade groupings for biblical teaching, fun, and connection with friends and leaders. ALL families—regardless if you’ve done so before—need to sign up for fall programming. Visit cpconline.org to sign up for both weekend and Wednesday programs for kids in nursery-6th grade.

We’re excited for a new year of partnering with parents to make kids’ faith stick!

THE JUNCTION is where our community of kids comes for an evening filled with food, music, games, and Bible-based teaching. Kids in kindergarten-6th grade learn about God and how to live out their faith through worship in kids’ choirs, peer friendships, and connection to CPC’s amazing student leaders and adults.

5:00-6:15PM A low-cost meal available for all kids and families involved in Wednesday programs.

5:45-6:30PM Kindergarten-5th graders learn to build life-long musical skills, praise God, and lead worship.

6:30-7:30PM 1st and 2nd graders go on an adventure to discover biblical truths, actively diving into God’s Word along the way.

3rd and 4th graders explore worship and the ministry of Jesus through three electives, then connect in large and small groups.

5th grade boys and girls take unique tracks to discover who God is and His unique design for them as they follow Jesus.

6th graders make their faith relevant in today’s world by exploring real life, real people, and a real God.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ELEMENTARY Jordyn came to Minnesota from Birmingham, Alabama— and brought her 25 pairs of Converse tennis shoes with her! WHY ELEMENTARY KIDS ARE AWESOME! I feel a special calling to kids because I feel like a big kid myself! I’m very creative, and I still maintain my “childlike faith.” I think 3rd grade is the magic year: You’re old enough to use the bathroom by yourself, you still want to please your elders, and you’re also starting to grasp abstract concepts like faith. These are the “aha” days. All the teachings 3rd graders learned when they were littler take on new meaning: “Oh, I can actually apply this to my life!” WHY PARENTS ARE AWESOME, TOO! Parents are the spiritual cornerstones of their children’s lives, and Kids’ Ministries staff is here to equip parents as they lead the charge. Some parents are overwhelmed that their kids look to them to set the tone of faith in the home. But that’s the beauty of faith and grace and Jesus: We don’t have to be perfect! And kids aren’t looking for perfection because they know they mess up, too! The church can be the support system when parents say, “I don’t know what to do.” We help one another find what’s best for each child on their faith journey.

T WO FRE SH FACE S

HIGH SCHOOL MINISTRIES DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY Mycah returns to Minnesota—and her home church of CPC—after spending seven years living in California. WHY STUDENTS ARE AWESOME! Students ask truly tough questions—they want to know what is true and how to live life. I love sharing with them how God has transformed my life and how He can transform theirs. Students often think they can’t share their faith until they know all the answers or they can’t pray until they have the “right” words. I want to empower them to read the Bible on their own and pray in their own words—God wants to hear from them! HOW MYCAH’S FAMILY INFLUENCED HER FAITH I first gained my passion for loving Jesus and sharing it with others in my home. After all, parents are the biggest influence in their children’s lives! You can go to church together, pray as a family, do service projects. Or you can just have conversations about life and faith. I’ve been living with my parents and siblings until my husband returns from California. The other night my 8-year-old brother was like, “Do we always have to talk about church?!” And I was like, “Um, yeah, it’s really important!” We all had to laugh!

The Table a fresh perspective

Narrative Lectionary This year, The Table studies the stories of Scripture, first in the Old Testament, then through the life of Jesus, and finally in the early Church. Jump in at any point and hear the story of God’s love for His people—and at the end of the year, look back and see the story arc of Creation, the Fall, and redemption that God is telling over and over again.

THE TABLE LOGO The Table has a fresh look! It highlights Communion as the cornerstone of weekly worship, where everyone is welcome and reconciliation occurs.

AFTERTHOUGHTS Matt Moberg and Heather Hammond record Afterthoughts, a weekly podcast to go deeper into the message and help you practice your faith during the week.

“I have fresh eyes, and I’m hearing a lot of this for the first time . . . it has been really cool to learn alongside my kids.”

I

grew up in a home where my dad was raised very Catholic and my mom didn’t have a religion. Whatever faith we got was from our dad’s perspective—but we never went to church, so really, it was just his word. It was creepy to me that people ever considered God a father figure because I was abused by my dad. My earthly father was saying, “God is your Father who loves you unconditionally with all of His heart and will do anything for you”—all while he was doing horrible things to his daughters. Even though I wanted to believe, in my heart I couldn’t. How could that be true of God if it wasn’t my experience with my own father? My husband and I have gone to churches where everything felt like a chore—staged and scripted. Nothing felt energizing or like we could take it out into real life. We were saying the same prayers every week, and no one was really listening to the words, but just going through the motions. Then after attending my cousin’s wedding at CPC, I thought, “Wow, worship can feel like this? I never knew that!” Things began to change when

I finally went to therapy and started coming to terms with the reality of my childhood. Admitting what it was— being able to say it and own it as a part of who I am—helped me say, “Okay, that was then, but what now? Something is still missing.” Because church had been a chore for so long, it was hard to make it a priority at first. I finally said, “We have to try it at some point, so let’s just go tonight and see what happens.” That was last October, and every weekend that we’ve been in town, we’ve been at The Table. Last January, I signed up for Essentials 101 [Overview of God’s Story]. I really had no knowledge of the Bible—it felt like Greek mythology to me with all these superhuman characters, never rooted in real life. But this whole class was about looking at your faith from a fresh perspective. I recognized that the stories from the Bible actually happened— they’re not fables. Having something historical and logical to root them in has helped energize my faith. Seeing my kids hear the Word of God in such a real way is awesome. They ask me questions, and I sometimes won’t

know the answer and have to look it up. But I can say to them, “I didn’t get to learn about the Bible and Jesus like you do. Mommy’s learning right along with you.” I have fresh eyes, and I’m hearing a lot of this for the first time. As much as I’ve always been embarrassed about my ignorance of the Bible, it has been really cool to learn alongside my kids. They’re already looking forward to Wednesday nights, saying: “Then we’re at church TWO times a week!” No other place has ever ignited us the way The Table has. We’re surrounded by people who are doing work to make right now—this place and this time— better. We’ve never carried our faith into our week, and we do that all the time now. We’re having conversations after church, struggling with questions like, “Do we move from this cushy neighborhood to somewhere else to help? What does that mean for our kids?” Those are not conversations we’ve ever had before. This is a community that wants to be the hands and feet of Jesus and is doing the real work instead of just talking about it. Now we feel like we are where we belong. CPC LIFE

THE CPC LOGO HAS A FRESH, NEW LOOK! A FEW POINTS TO HIGHLIGHT:

• The cross—and Christ’s sacrifice upon it—remains the cornerstone of our faith, and in turn, our logo.

• At CPC we often say we are all broken people becoming whole through Christ’s work in our lives. Our new logo reflects that we are broken but coming together in Jesus-centered community. • A closer look at the logo reveals the letters “CPC” creating the shape of the cross.
