n stark contrast to the sterile and minimalistic trends of past years, the interior design industry has evolved considerably by engaging and altering people’s perceptions of what is considered ‘raw’. Delve into the depths of ‘reuse’, ‘upcycle’ and ‘recycle’ and the results are truly phenomenal. In this month’s issue of Inex, we bring you Machine No.3 – an extraordinary bar that began its life as a launderette. Siblings Anthony and Lauren Johns discovered the dilapidated London launderette and instantly felt attracted to the unique space. The original decor was retained as much as possible to create a vintage, unkempt design. Exposed brickwork and plaster patches now offer a sense of authenticity and blend perfectly with the distressed, worn furniture. Turn to page 28 to read more about this creative concept. Elsewhere on page 36, Carl Turner Architects demonstrates a fresh, innovative concept by recycling old shipping containers for work, rest and play. Two inspiring schemes – Pop Brixton and A New House for London – provide communities with ‘places’ rather than just ‘buildings’, allowing the public to engage with and enjoy the facilities. I hope you enjoy this issue. Don’t forget, you can also access all of Inex’s features and product inspiration on its dedicated state-of-the-art app. Simply search ‘Inex’ on the App Store or Google play to download your version free of charge.

Maria has designed and completed a broad spectrum of projects in Ireland and the UK, with a large range of concept and built work undertaken

From small residential projects, to large resort hotels and multi-million pound master planning schemes, the practice brings its unique commercial experience and skill to suit each individual project, market and location. Maria has provided Inex with an insight into her perception of the interior design industry, how she has landed in her current position, her love of design and her presence in the interior design industry.

Q. Please can you give us a brief history of your professional background? Born and bred in Dublin, Ireland, and still living here, I graduated in 1998 from DIT, Dublin, completing my degree in Environmental & Spatial Design and majoring in Interior Design. Luckily for me it was the beginning of the ‘Boom’ years when I graduated so there was plenty of work in my field. I worked with Dublin based architectural and design firms for the first few years and then set up my own company with another designer in 2004. I have been self employed ever since. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Simplicity holds the key to luxury Belgium-born Jean-Michel Gathy is the Principle Designer at Denniston Architects. He is responsible for some of the world’s most luxurious hotel designs and his infinity pools are among those most recognised exterior pools.

A

fter completing his degree in architecture Jean-Michel Gathy initiated his career in 1979, residing for almost three years in Belgium in the architectural industry. He subsequently went on to work and live in Hong Kong, Bali and Singapore. Jean-Michel’s ceaseless change of culture and environment has been a great benefit to his incomparable designs. Inspiration for designs emerge from his analytical mind when travelling – travelling 220 days out of the year with “a critical eye” inspires these phenomenal designs. He will analyse and question everything he perceives, and states that subconsciously he will reminisce things he has comprehended whether it be colours, proportions, volumes, visual approach or a relationship between spaces. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Jean-Michel and his team at Malaysian-based firm Denniston, have mastered the art of designing seamlessly between architecture, interior and landscape design. Having produced designs for numerous styles of hotels, when it comes to urban design he is sensitive towards comfort, with a belief that “ultimately comfort

is the first quality a hotel should have”. A signature style that you will associate with Jean-Michel’s designs is the use of geometry, symmetry and balance. All of which

21 EXRATED

are individually distinctive however all hold the same consistency of quality. Jean-Michel’s admiration towards symmetry was highlighted to Inex. He comments: “If I asked you to name some of the world’s most famous historic monuments, everything you list would be perfectly symmetrical…Something about symmetry is very pleasing to the human eye; people are comfortable with something that suits the eye.” Quality and comfort The team at Denniston have produced the highest quality swimming pools for hotels all over the world. When designing for these hotels Jean-Michel respectively incorporates some of the country’s culture into all of his designs, which makes them all unique to their country of origin. He says: “It is almost the responsibility of the architect or interior designer to bring an aspect of the local culture and country’s values into their designs.” That said, designs are not a mere reproduction of what is associated with the country. He humours: “Just because you are

in Rome you don’t have to build a colosseum.” All designs respect the fundamental values of the country and the local culture, references are added to each design that are extracted from the country’s culture. “Many architects enter into a comfort zone after many years of designing,” explains Jean-Michel. He describes himself as a “fighter” and believes in the challenges he is presented with, re-questioning himself frequently when designing, to ensure that every design is unique to former projects, culminating in his success. Working in a team of 150 designers described as “eagles” is one of Jean-Michel’s greatest achievements. He has created a team of extraordinary, balanced designers that are currently working on 35 hotels; some in construction, design stages and some opening momentarily. The team is due to open 16 hotels between 2017-2018, including The One and Only in China and a renovation on The One and Only in the Maldives. Marina Bay Sands Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands infinity pool is an iconic design of Jean-Michel’s. The 150m long infinity pool overlooks downtown Singapore and is built on a platform above three buildings which reaches a height of 650ft, resulting in the Marina Bay Sands infinity pool as the largest outdoor pool at this height. Initially the design plan for the Singapore’s renowned Marina Bay Sands hotel was to have the infamous infinity pool facing the sea. Safdie Architects’ initial concept was to place one or two restaurants and a swimming pool across the the top of the three buildings. When approached with this project, JeanMichel was asked what he would do with this rooftop garden, after sitting down for a total of 10 minutes he had his design. The remarkable spiralling chandelier The chandelier is a timeless creation that has endured numerous modifications throughout the years. The imaginative and creative minds from design studio, Harvey & John have created the remarkable Mumuration Chandelier, an impressive addition to The Collective HQ.

S

ince the 14th century there has been an immeasurable change in the design of the chandelier. Originating from the French word ‘chandelle’, the word ‘chandelier’ simply translates into the meaning ‘candle holder’. As time has progressed chandeliers have evolved from their original 14th century state – two wood beams forming a cross with a spike applied to either end to hold a candle – to the 18th century; ornate, crystal and glass art symbols of wealth and through to the 21st century. Designers Keivor John and Richard Harvey have highlighted just how far the design of the chandelier has come with its design of the exclusive Murmuration Chandelier.

INEX-ONLINE.COM

Given the name, their inspiration for this phenomenal design emerged from bird murmurations – a flock of starlings swooping and diving simultaneously in masses of thousands; a breathtaking scene to any witness. Brighton Pier is a recommended landmark to spot starling murmurations, which is where Keivor and Richard spent their autumn evenings accumulating inspiration for their design. The brief The imaginative duo were commissioned by property company, The Collective, to design “the world’s most unique chandelier...something groundbreaking, interactive

and immersive that had never been designed before” for its HQ situated in Central London. The Collective as a company supports emerging talent, aspiring entrepreneurs and businesses, all of which were key in Harvey & John’s design for the striking chandelier. Following this brief Harvey & John unveiled the Murmuration Chandelier; a kinetic lighting sculpture, spanning over 5m, the chandelier sits as a permanent installation at The Collective’s HQ at 14 Bedford Square in London. Design inspiration Keivor John and Richard Harvey are the dynamic duo behind Harvey & John, a creative studio that exists at the intersection between invention, design, art and engineering, with a strong focus on how imaginative design can inspire people in their everyday lives. Harvey & John created the breath-taking chandelier with inspiration taken from the spectacle at Brighton’s seafront every autumn evening before dusk – a murmuration of Starlings. “Why a murmuration?” comments Keivor. “First and foremost it is a beautiful sight, but the analogy of lots of individuals coming together to make something beautiful

married nicely with The Collective’s ethos of creating communities, alongside the space in Bedford Square. When you look at a murmuration, the birds can seem randomly scattered across the sky – but then in a moment they align to make a beautiful shape and pattern. Like a murmuration, the chandelier fleets in and out from seeming disorder to precise patterns and shapes – a mesmerising spectacle in its own right.” Design structure The chandelier consists of 20 rings that taper in diameter, finished with patinated steel to produce a textured gunmetal exterior and a light reflecting brushed steel on the inside. Abstract starling shapes were laser cut from each ring that all align at a certain point in its spiralling sequence. From below, the piece resembles a spirograph in motion, aligning to make mesmerising concentric patterns. The chandelier spans over 5m across three floors. Each ring has its own counterweight, which allows the piece to be in perfect balance whatever shape it is in. Each ring also has its own micro-controller and motor, the further down the sculpture, the faster the rotation. The kinetic sculpture can also be controlled by an App to change the colour, speed and direction of movement. Harvey & John exists to invent the world’s friendliest products. The Brighton-based duo’s aim is not to create something that offers more beauty or function but to create something that offers more feeling. Previous playful designs include the The Floating Orchestra, Thought Bubbles and Firefly. Harvey & John’s designs inject fun into the surrounding environment, and brings people closer together. harveyandjohn.com «

iblings Antony and Lauren Johns and their French partner Briac Le Camus are the creative minds behind Hornsey’s new neighbourhood bar, Machine No.3. The name is derived from the extraordinary setting of the bar, a dilapidated old launderette on the corner of Well Street in Homerton, East London, which Lauren, Antony and Briac have transformed into an intimate, quirky cocktail focussed bar. In the process of Machine No.3’s development, the team – who undertook the work themselves – wished to retain some of the original features and take INEX-ONLINE.COM

inspiration from the building’s existing decor. The exposed brickwork’s warm colours are reflected in the copper light fittings, some of which were originally manufactured in the USSR as factory lights and were imported from Lithuania. Retaining the roots of its original setting, a visit to the rest rooms at Machine No.3 includes sightings of the old washing machine doors themselves. The original washing machine covers now adorn the bathrooms. The trio were looking for a unique space at the right size and location, as Lauren explains:

“We did not go out purposefully searching for an old launderette – the fact that the establishment was a laundrette was a happy accident.” Doors and windows Machine No.3’s decor is a complete contrast to Antony, Lauren and Briac’s first venture – The Three Compasses in Hornsey, London. Here you can expect a traditional East End bar with decor that you would associate with an East End pub; framed boxing photos, framed vintage beer adverts, mirrors and guilt frames. Machine No.3 has a more modern

presence with exposed brickwork, copper light fittings and warm lighting. Floor to ceiling glass windows and doors were installed via Barking Shop Fronts, presenting the bar with vast amounts of light – a complete comparison to the original dark launderette it once was. Lauren explains how the team wanted the bar to differ from standard East End cocktail bars: “In contrast to the recent trend for dark and basement style cocktail bars, we installed floor to ceiling glass windows and doors in order to flood the venue with light.”

chairs from Peppermill Antiques in Staffordshire were selected for the sit-down area. Correlatively, specially commissioned furniture, such as the tables and fixed seating, were produced by a local carpenter. Now mostly removed, a blue plaster, which was

formerly covering parts of the brickwork, led to inspiration for the handmade furniture, in particular the leather coverings of the seating. Lauren describes the thought process behind the inspiration for the textiles and colours used for Machine No.3’s furnishings: “Our

intentions changed throughout refurbishment as we started to strip down the original launderette features. When the walls were revealed and we saw how beautiful the original plaster was, our concept changed. We decided to keep parts of the blue plaster as a subtle design feature. This led to our inspiration for the colours of the handmade furniture and the leather seats and coverings.” Colour inspiration Further colour palette inspiration emerged from the green granite tiles of the former launderette, which were brought up to spec with a buff and polish. The team came across a few obstacles on their journey to opening Machine No.3. One of the main obstacles was the removal of the original industrial gas and water pipes used to keep the former launderette in working order. This task was an extremely time consuming and tedious duty for the team.

There were no existing radiators in the establishment due to the previous washing machines and dryers creating so much heat. The team installed new radiators, selecting a retro style and painted them slate grey to match the painted concrete floor around the edges of the room. Speaking about the bar’s opening, Lauren enthuses: “We are so excited to be unveiling our brand new venture, Machine No.3, to Hackney’s blossoming Well Street. The area is already home to a number of brilliant pubs and restaurants and we truly believe our new bar will be a great addition to the landscape.” The trio have no further plans to open anymore bars in the upcoming months, however Inex has been told to “watch this space”. machineno3.com «

Ultimate floorfiller Studio Alt Shift’s Shai Akram and Andrew Haythornthwaite worked directly with Bell Asphalt to produce an innovative, hardwearing floor for Brighton’s seafront nightclub, Patterns.

S

hai Akram and Andrew Haythornthwaite have highlighted the former hotel and long-lived music venue’s original art-deco features to create Patterns nightclub in Brighton. The building’s exterior enjoys the bold colours of the art-deco era and has a distinct ‘Miami’ feeling, with palm trees and vibrant green and orange paintwork. Shai and Andrew were approached by Mothership Group – the owner of Patterns – with a vision for a space that was hardworking, thought provoking and totally dedicated to enjoying music, sunshine and dancing, all housed in a seafront art deco building and its terrace. Audio – the previous establishment – was a complex network of corridors and rooms,

the connections between them had evolved over the course of time. One of the first things the studio proposed was to rationalise the relationship across the floors by installing a new staircase infrastructure – with Steve Searby Architects – and harmonise the relationship between the bar and basement club. Fixed seating platforms travel across the basement club, up to the bar and out onto the terrace, creating contours and tiers for sitting. Studio Alt Shift designed and developed a bespoke table range using Terrazzo – a composite material, which is used for floor and wall treatments. Replacing the 200m2 floor with a ground asphalt surface was a huge decision for the project as it is a challenging material to bring into an interior environment. Studio Alt Shift used plenty of timber, brightly coloured upholstery and leather to temper the effect and create a space that was inviting and comfortable. The floor is a major feature of the space, bringing variation and texture as well as an incredibly durable and hardworking surface. Terrazzo assisted in complementing Patterns’ modern look. It is tailorable with different grades and a choice of five colours of stone, which are added at the mixing point to provide a bespoke finish. The conveniences were also completely redesigned. .P. Hart – renowned for its use of the finest materials and advanced manufacturing techniques – was appointed to design and supply five luxurious bathroom schemes for the immaculate property in Fairmile Lane. The build was produced by Surrey property developer Mattwell

Homes in the town of leafy Cobham in Surrey. Mattwell Homes has mixed the respected traditions of brick and block construction with modern environmentally improved practices to create a stylish and efficient home with modern living in mind. This luxuriously-designed property features spacious proportions and cutting-edge interior design. The bathroom schemes selected by C.P. Hart reflect the clean classicism displayed throughout the setting at Fairmile Lane. A calm, muted palette in every room – including the bathrooms – gave the home a contemporary yet refined style. Lynne Wainwright, Senior Business Development Manager at C.P. Hart comments: “The attention to detail shown throughout the property is a testament to Mattwell Homes’ creative design vision, and is particularly evident in the bathrooms where we have supplied leading brands such as Duravit, Hansgrohe, Axor and Matki. We are delighted with the final bathroom schemes and quality of finish.”

C.P. Hart carefully selected bathroom products for the first floor master bathroom that reflects the timeless style and meets the contemporary design aesthetic that runs throughout the property Products selected by C.P. Hart for all five bathroom schemes include sanitaryware by leading bathroom supplier Duravit, brassware by Axor and luxury shower enclosures by Matki. The team at C.P. Hart opted for bespoke glass furniture by Italian manufacturer, Artelinea, to complement the sophisticated decor of the master bedroom, while glass design bowls were selected to create an eye-catching impression in the cloakroom.

Owing to the generous proportions of the master bathroom C.P. Hart was able to specify high quality products for dedicated bathing, showering and basin areas which help contribute to the luxurious feel of the space. C.P. Hart’s own Domino basin unit was supplied in a clean white finish and in an 1800mm double basin format and teamed with a sleek vanity unit in a contrasting dark finish to create valuable storage space for personal items and keep surfaces clear. Wallmounted Citterio basin mixer taps by Axor in contemporary chrome were fitted to enhance the streamlined finish and the expansive basin area is further complemented by a large wall mirror and strategic spot lighting. For the showering area C.P. Hart supplied the Eauzone collection from Matki to create a minimalist wet room area, with shower controls including the Raindance overhead shower and Starck designed handshower from Hansgrohe. The open, uncluttered feel of the bathroom scheme is further enhanced by a Starck 3 wall hung pan by Duravit and light-enhancing, pared-back porcelain wall and floor tiles featuring a subtle stone grain. A tiled seating area and inset shelf completes the luxurious spa feel of the shower area whilst ensuring it is practical to use. cphart.co.uk INEX-ONLINE.COM

Resourceful recycling The resourceful minds at Carl Turner Architects have generated two innovative schemes produced from recycled shipping containers. The firm’s ambition has always been to work with people in the community, which it has demonstrated with its work for Pop Brixton and A New House for London.

C

arl Turner Architects has an industrial style with a low-tech and playful twist. Its designs can range from an almost minimal aesthetic, to a highly decorative establishment. Formed in 2006, the practice has been recognised for its innovation, winning a RIBA National award for its project, Slip House in 2013. The firm’s first project with the use of recycled shipping containers was for NPO Magnificent Revolution at Hackney City Farm, where the project required the use of one recycled container. This is where inspiration for Pop Brixton arose, which required the use of 60 recycled containers. The markets of Brixton and its arcaded internal streets provided inspiration for Pop Brixton alongside the striped market canopies and chaotic street life of the surrounding streets. The concept was to make the area feel like an undesigned space; like it had materialised organically and the hand of the designer is not evident.

INEX-ONLINE.COM

Pop Brixton is a collaboration between CTA, The Collective, Lambeth Council and Landscape Designers, Uncommon. Carl Turner Architects was approached by Brixton Council to create an ‘incubator’ project to support and nurture local start up businesses, and to explore different rental models and levels. The brief was to create a ‘meanwhile’ space with a three year life-span. Although the use of shipping containers is not a fresh concept in the world of architecture, the firm’s focus was to create a place rather than a building. The 10-year-old containers were brought in from a

container yard in Essex, in batches of four loads containing 15 containers. A mobile crane circa 80 tonnes was used to crane them into position. At their highest point the crates sit at a height of four – however can theoretically go up to 10. London-based fashion and design company, Eley Kishimoto designed the wallpaper strip decoration and hand printed and applied all of the coloured decoration for the establishment. All logos were applied to the shipping containers by the tenants as graphics in the style of the original container logos. Pop Brixton has received amazing feedback, with crowds visiting over the summer months of approximately 15,000 per week – including visitors from across the world. As the social and local nature of the project is increasingly more appreciated, individuals who were initially sceptical of the project are coming to terms with the concept. Similarly to Pop Brixton, Carl Turner Architects’ second shipping container project – A new House for London – was a project developed by

Above left: Eley Kishimoto designed and hand printed the wallpaper strip decoration of the coloured decoration for both schemes Above: The markets of Brixton and its arcaded internal streets provided inspiration for Pop Brixton Far left: The firm looked at how an ‘estate’ of houses could be laid out and by keeping A New House for London low rise they can sit on nextto-no foundations Left: A New House for London was designed to inhabit one or two adults with the prospect to extend the build with a third shipping container to create a ‘U’ shape

CTA working with The Building Centre and Arup for engineering, lighting and services and building science. Again Eley Kishimoto produced the fabric, paper and screen printed designs for the scheme. This project was a follow on from Arup’s work in 2014 with Architecture 00 on Wiki House, built in the same location. The brief was to work with shipping containers to create a lowtech, low-cost house, capable of being realised by self-builders. It was agreed to make a low rise, suburban house rather than part of a taller building, in order for the public to engage with it. A New House for London was designed to inhabit one or two adults with the prospect to extend the build with a third shipping container to create a ‘U’ shape. The build is produced from two 125ft2 shipping containers. The hypothesis was to create a project that can be adapted and extended by the occupants. The firm also looked at how an ‘estate’

of houses could be laid out and by keeping it low rise they can sit on next-to-no foundations. Previously used containers – which were in much better condition than the ones at Pop Brixton – were used to achieve a slightly sharper finish. The house was inspired by Canal boats – particularly narrow boats – as a way of living closer to nature, where the roof becomes an important outside space, and living becomes simpler and more of an ecosystem as there is not as much room for personal possessions, which encourages a more frugal way of life. Carl Turner Architects is currently working on a project based in Peckham – Peckham Levels is a multi- storey car park which will be transformed into a mixed-venue for performance, artist studios and workshops. There are also plans for a timber floating Passivhaus project that the firm is excited to start work on. ct-architects.co.uk « INEX-ONLINE.COM

Home automation can enable every light in and around the house to be dimmed or switched on and off with touch-

screens and smartphones, as well as discreet local wall panels replacing conventional light switches. Pre-set scenes are also available to create specific lighting moods, which should be considered alongside the overall interior design scheme. Additionally, all the lights in a house can be turned off with a single button or lighting can be set to holiday mode, creating the impression that the house is occupied. Multi-room audio and video systems can now include a music player for each family member to enjoy his or her own diverse music collection and streaming service. Discreet ceiling speakers in various rooms and external speakers in the garden can be organised into audio zones, each providing music and sound selected from the central AV system. Similarly, video content from multiple, centralised sources – such as Sky, Virgin TiVo and Apple TV boxes, Blu-ray discs and movie servers – can be distributed to TVs located anywhere in the house. Although dedicated cinema rooms are still called for, very often a single room has to work both as an everyday living space and also a high-specification 3D home cinema. Here, at the touch of a button, a projector can descend from the ceiling, a screen gently lowers in front of the TV, the lights dim and motorised blinds close, creating the ultimate home cinema experience

with stunning picture quality and jaw-dropping surround sound. In such situations, Cyberhomes has designed cabinetry housing the screen and front speakers. Here, a tilting mechanism enables speaker adjustment to suit the precise distance to the seats once furniture positions have been finalised, optimising acoustic performance. Speakers can also be hidden behind removable, ‘acousticallytransparent’ fabric panels to suit interior designs. Working closely with interior designers and architects is therefore key to combining the best performance and design. Smart technology allows discreet CCTV cameras and door or gate entry systems to display on any of the touch-screen control panels throughout the house or on smartphones, including when away from home. Owners can also check and adjust heating, lighting and other functions when they are away. Intruder alarm systems can also be integrated with home automation, allowing additional actions to be triggered automatically. Initially involving smart homes specialists optimises integration of the system with the overall building design. The AV racks should be built and tested and all the wiring looms created in a controlled environment, minimising connections and other work on a building site. cyberhomes.co.uk «

Since then the fair has embraced post-war and mid-century design, contemporary art, the industrial look and is anticipating the design changes of the next three decades. The 2016 Winter Fair’s main foyer feature – Take a Seat – will display and incorporate a review of tastes and designs spanning all eras including: l Jointed and high-back designs from the 17th and 18th centuries including regional vernacular variations. l Country stick-back chairs from Wales, the West Country and Windsor. Known as a ‘tailor of interiors’, Rob Bartlett – Creative Director of Caxton Rhode – opted for Glacier Ice White Corian from CD UK. To maintain the material’s integrity and ensure a flawless distribution of light, the patterned fascia was milled directly into a single solid sheet. An outer shell was then constructed from sections of the same material, before being bonded and polished to create a seamfree piece. cdukltd.co.uk 0113 201 2240 INEX-ONLINE.COM
