pringtime at Chizuk Amuno is always lively and busy. The days of spring place us between the festivals of Pesah and Shavuot. This is a time for renewal and reflection, as well as celebration and appreciation. On Passover we rejoiced in our freedom. Now we must live its responsibilities and opportunities. After pausing last month to properly remember the tragedy of the Holocaust, this month we mark spring as

Springtime is also when we count the Omer, 50 days we announce to remember God’s gifts of freedom and sustenance. Our daily count for seven weeks is an affirmation of the blessings in our lives we take for granted, and upon which we depend. Spring at Chizuk Amuno invites us to gather together in the bonds of community that sustain us. We anticipate a Congregational Day of Learning and a Religious School Dance Festival on Lag Ba’Omer, May 18, a special concert drawing on our Jewish musical heritage on June 8, our
Krieger Schechter 8th Graders’ trip to Israel, graduations from all of our schools throughout May and June, our Annual Meeting on June 1, Shabbat celebrations each week, and so much more. Spring’s beauty is most certainly something for our eyes to behold. Spring can also inspire us in other ways. Art with a Heart
Art with a Heart’s mission is to enhance the lives of people in need by bringing its visual art programs to abused, neglected, and abandoned children; homeless people; battered women and their children; pregnant adolescents; mentally and physically disabled adults; low-income senior citizens; elementary, middle, and high school students; youth in after-school programs; and children receiving long-term health care. Knit One, Learn Too
We knit and/or crochet blankets for babies in Israel and Baltimore. Each session includes study and discussion. Knitting instruction is available and everyone is welcome. Operation Welcome Home Maryland
Join us as we welcome home our troops from military service overseas. Volunteers meet at BWI airport and help pack goodie bags, welcome and cheer for soldiers, and thank them for their service. Dates are set one to three weeks in advance of the incoming flights. If you would like to be informed of these welcoming opportunities contact, Rabbi Wechsler at dwechsler@ chizukamuno.org. This project is suitable for adults and children of all ages.
Ronald McDonald House
Join us as we cook and serve dinners at Ronald McDonald House for families with seriously ill children. Afterhours Emergency Calls Mazal Tov to Our April and May Graduates To better serve our members, we have engaged the company, FOCUS, to provide an afterhours emergency answering service for Chizuk Amuno. A special phone number, 410/880-8610, will be given at the end of all of our regular main office and school voicemail greetings instructing callers to call the number in the event of death or extreme emergency. When called, the answering service will contact a designated staff member for follow up. In addition to reaching the staff member “on call,” the company will e-mail any phone messages to us by 9:15 a.m. every morning.

It’s a Date! Celebrating with Our 2015 Bar and Bat Mitzvah Families
Excitedly they walked out to the mailbox. They peered in and saw the Chizuk Amuno logo. Before they even got back into the house the envelope had been torn open. There it was in black and white – the Bar Mitzvah date! It is a significant milestone in a family’s Jewish life, finding out when your child will become Bar or Bat Mitzvah. This month we will be celebrating with our students who will become Bar/Bat Mitzvah in 2015 and have recently received their dates. On Thursday, May 15 at 6 p.m. we will throw a dinner party to celebrate with our families. We will teach them about the special parashah that will be theirs, we will introduce them to the synagogue personnel who will guide them on their journey, and we will help them start to think about what it means to become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Go for Baroque! Hazzan Emanuel Perlman and the Music of Solomone Rossi
Sunday, June 8 • 4 p.m. We will present the rarely performed music of the first Jewish polyphonic composer in history, Solomone Rossi. This concert will be performed by Hazzan Perlman and an all-professional choir of 24 and eight immensely talented instrumentalists. Having two balconies in the Sanctuary allows Choir Master T. Herbert Dimmock to conduct the musical assemblage in the great ‘chori spezzati’ tradition. In addition we will be serenaded by the music of Gabrielle and Schutz. We express our gratitude to Sandra Hittman for her generous support which made this concert possible. Solomone Rossi was a leader in the new Baroque styles of music and the first to publish madrigals with basso continuo parts. He wrote light vocal music, several important sinfonias and other instrumental music, and most significantly Jewish liturgical music, such as his Hashirim Asher Lish’lomo (Songs of Solomon) with 33 polyphonic settings of sacred Hebrew texts. He is credited with leading the transition from the Renaissance form of the canzonetta into the Baroque form of the trio sonata, with its textual distinction between the upper voices and the bass line. Rossi (1570-1630) is recognized to be the first Jewish composer to physically transcribe his music using the music notation available. There were other composers but their scores have never been found.

The Amuno Minyan
Shabbat Prayer and Torah Discussion May 31, 9:30 a.m. Enjoyed by many, the Amuno Minyan is our lay-led participatory Shabbat morning service, a more intimate and informal setting for prayer and Torah study. We meet at 9:30 a.m. in the Esterson Auditorium and end by 11:30 a.m. – when those who wish to can join for the conclusion of the Sanctuary service and Kiddush with our synagogue community. Adults and Children of All Ages Celebrate Torah on Shavuot
On Shavuot we imagine ourselves at Mt. Sinai and rejoice in the gift of Torah. To honor our holiday’s spirit, our Shavuot Festival Morning Service on Wednesday, June 4 will include opportunities for everyone, from our youngest to our oldest, to sit with each other and study the Ten Commandments. At 10 a.m., after our Shaharit: Morning service, we’ll leave the Sanctuary and sit together around Torah study tables in the Krieger Auditorium. Over coffee and nosh, our rabbis will guide us as we dialogue with study partners and explore the Ten Commandments. While we study, our children will gather for their own holiday program and prepare to join us in the Sanctuary for a special ceremony. At 10: 30 a.m., following our learning, we’ll return to the Sanctuary to receive and read Torah. Our children will join us when we read the Ten Commandments from the Torah Scroll, celebrating their growth and freshness by bringing bikkurim, greens and fruits, to decorate the bimah.

Club Hatikvah’s Closing Fiesta
Join Club Hatikvah on Sunday, June 1, at 6 p.m. for our final dinner of the 2013-2014 year. Enjoy good company, delicious food, and our wonderful entertainment for the evening, Mexican dance troupe Bailes de mi Tierra, whose repertoire includes dances from six regions of Mexico and tropical dances such as the Cha-Cha-Cha and Cumbia. The dances and music, along with their colorful costumes provide a rich representation of their Mexican heritage and traditions. Club Hatikvah events are open to members and guests. Brotherhood Visits Mt. Vernon
Sunday, May 4 Join Brotherhood when they journey to Mt. Vernon, home of our first U.S. president, George Washington. We will leave Chizuk Amuno at 8:30 a.m. – breakfast will be served on the bus. We will tour the mansion and will have an option to visit the distillery (still working) which is just a short bus ride away. The grounds are extensive and their visitor center is state of the art. We will depart the site around 3 p.m. and stop at Max’s Deli in Wheaton, MD to pick up some box lunches for the ride home. Cost: $65 per person, which includes the bus and the food. Space is limited. Our popular and contemporary Friday night service with guitar music welcomes adults, school families, and friends of all ages once each month at Chizuk Amuno.
