Help Us Help You Business brains are being picked to help map out the future for firms in south Lincolnshire. South Holland District Council has launched its 2011 business survey to find out what bosses have to say about working in the region.

Responses from the survey, devised by the council’s economic development unit, will enable officers to gauge opinions and organise services to support firms throughout the district. Questions focus on areas such as training and skills, recruitment and job losses, transport, turnover, land and site needs and planning for the future. Hundreds of businesses responded to a similar survey two years ago as the onset of the recession began to hit the region. The current fact-finding exercise is aimed at updating

the council on how firms have coped and responded to the economic challenges during that time. Councillor Howard Johnson, SHDC portfolio holder for economic development, said: “This survey will enable us to plan services and find out whether there are needs that we are currently not catering for. For example, a company might be looking to relocate or move to bigger premisess and we can assist them in their search. “We want to find out about the barriers and blockers that are affecting our businesses and will seek ways of removing them to help ensure that they can operate effectively. We want to retain and attract more businesses to the district.”

Drought Declared A drought has been officially declared in Lincolnshire, including South Holland, following the driest Spring since records began. The decision was taken by the Environment Agency and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) in view of river and groundwater levels, risk to the environment and to farmers. Further information contact The Environment Agency, DEFRA or Anglian Water

Race for Life 2011 in this year’s Race for Life. This year saw a change in venue from Ferry Meadows to the town centre, so the girls had to run their 5k through the streets of the city centre finishing off at the embankment.

It was a wet and wild Sunday for this year’s Race for Life in Peterborough, but it didn’t dampen the spiritsof a group of local ladies. A fab time was had by all and more importantly over £2000 was raised between the team for cancer research, a charity which has touched many. Spalding resident Elaine Allen organized the team of 8 to join the 3000plus entrants

Training differed throughout the group, some had been practicing for months others had been partying til 4am before the 11am start and some more interested in the fireman than the finish! But times, practice and finishing positions matter not, the point of the day was to have fun and raise an amazing amount of money for a important cause. The girls would like to day a big Thank you to their wonderful friends and family who gave so generously and to Unique Computer Training who sponsored the team vests.

Make Sure your Limo’s Safe

PROM-bound revellers looking to book a limo to take them to the end-of-school party are being warned to put safety first and ensure their carriage doesn’t break the law. As the school year draws to a close many primary and secondary pupils are planning to celebrate with an annual ‘prom’ or leaver’s celebration. Aware of the sudden rush of excitement, local authority licensing teams throughout Lincolnshire are jointly warning parents booking transport to ensure the vehicle, driver and operator are properly licensed. Under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 private hire vehicles, which includes limousines and hummers, their drivers and booking agents are all legally required to have a licence issued by the appropriate district council. This rule applies to any hire vehicle which can carry eight or fewer passengers and comes with a driver. Limousines which carry more than eight passengers are required to be licensed by the Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA).

Advice

Avoid The Cons Of Contracts

by Diane Clay

At South Holland Citizens Advice Bureau we are seeing an increasing number of people who have signed contracts for services, without really reading the small print and without knowing how long they have signed up for, especially for mobile phone services or gym membership. Every time we purchase goods from a shop or online we are entering into an agreement with the retailer and many of these agreements are legally binding. When a consumer enters into any kind of a credit contract whether it is borrowing money in the form of a loan, credit card, or financing for a car they will receive a contract with full terms and conditions. Most people will never read the contract thoroughly or check all of the clauses. Over the last decade or so, millions of Brits have been signing up for gym membership and although fitness clubs can be very good for your health, they can also be very bad for your finances! The first question you need to ask before joining a gym membership scheme is ‘How do I cancel?’. Many health clubs do not explain the terms and conditions, especially when it comes to cancellations. You may think that you are joining up to a monthly payment plan, when in actual fact once you have signed the form, you’ve committed to a credit plan - where a finance company affiliated with the gym pays your membership for you upfront and you pay them back in instalments, plus interest. If this is the type of deal you sign up to you will usually be committed to a minimum 12 month contract, which if you can cancel, you can only do so in really exceptional circumstances - such as breaking a bone or being hospitalised. Even then, you might not be able to get out of it. So before you sign up to a contract, consider the following: • Have you been a member of a gym before? It could be expensive if you decide you don’t like it. • Are there different rates for different times – e.g. off peak/on peak • Are you sure you want to commit to 12 months or more at the same gym? • Are you 100% happy with the gym you’re signing up to - have you looked around properly, does it have all the facilities you need? • Are you able to get to and from the health club easily? • Are you likely to change job/move home or anything else that would take you out of the area? • Can you cancel the agreement if you need to, for example if you are taken ill? Some gyms do include clauses that allow people to cancel their memberships, but these are not usually included in this type of agreement, so make sure you take any paperwork away to somewhere quiet so that you can read it carefully before signing. The same advice goes for signing mobile phone contracts – we are not short of mobile telephone shops, and the market is huge and competitive. The big five mobile telephone companies would love your business and there are a bewildering amount of offers and discounts available if you decide to apply for a mobile telephone contract. But the terms and conditions of the contract should be mandatory reading for anyone considering a pay monthly mobile phone contract. Don’t get bamboozled into signing a contract you don’t understand. Ask for a copy of the contract and read it before you sign it. Some people receive ‘cold calls’ over the phone; before agreeing, check how much you will have to pay and be aware that what is offered verbally during the call can be difficult to prove later.

Read the Small Print

If a consumer does eventually get round to reading their credit contracts it is usually the case that they have some form of grievance with the company. Leaving the reading of the terms and conditions of a contract until a dispute has arisen is never a good idea. Regardless of the type of contract, the terms and conditions should always be read before the contract is signed. There may be clauses in the contract that are unfair to the consumer. Although these clauses may be unenforceable by the credit company, reading and disputing these conditions prior to signing

10  SIMPLY SPALDING  www.simply-spalding.co.uk

may save a lot of time and money in the long run.

Terminating a Contract

The contract’s terms and conditions will give details on terminating a contract early. Companies tie customers into 12 and 18 month contracts in order to make money and keep the customer for a minimum length of time. The customer is under no obligation to stay with a company but there may be penalties should the customer decide to terminate the contract early. This condition should be checked before signing any contract. Failure to pay this penalty may result in a bad credit score.

Cooling-off period

You can cancel the contract within seven days, without having to say why, if you took it out: • over the internet • over the phone • by mail order. However, you may not have the same rights if you signed a contract on the trader’s premises. For example, if you bought your mobile phone contract from a shop, you don’t have an automatic right to cancel without charge, unless there is a problem with the service or the phone is faulty. However, the shop may have its own returns policy, which allows you to cancel the contract. You should check your cancellation rights before you take out a contract.

Remember – The golden rule before signing and committing to any agreement or contract is to read the small print. Many people have signed away a number of their rights by simply scanning the small print and not asking questions regarding the terms and conditions.

What is Parkinson’s?

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological disorder affecting learned voluntary movements such as walking, talking, writing and swallowing. There are three main symptoms: tremor, rigidity and slowness of movement, but not everyone will experience all three. Parkinson’s results from the loss of the chemical messenger dopamine within the brain. The cause is, as yet, unidentified and there is no known cure.

Who gets Parkinson’s?

In the UK, 1 in 500 people — around 120,000 individuals — have Parkinson’s. Although often perceived as an older person’s condition, many are affected during their working life and of the 10,000 people diagnosed in the UK each year, 1 in 20 is aged under 40.

Spalding & District Branch of Parkinson’s Ron Lomax, Secretary of the local branch explained about the group “Inaugurated as a branch in November 2010 and we have an enthusiastic committee who plan to provide a local support network and an interesting programme of speakers, visits and outings for all their members, carers and friends.

There are no expensive Membership Fees, but we just ask you to make a small contribution towards refreshments and a raffle at each monthly meeting to cover the costs. We would also ask you to please become a member of Parkinson’s UK, it only costs £4 per year. You will get a lot of information and a quarterly magazine. It also provides us with Public Liability insurance for outside events. Living with Parkinson’s can be challenging if you don’t know where to go for information, support and advice. There is no need for people in the Spalding & District area to be alone with the condition and we open the door to anyone who wants to know more about how we can help. Our members find the group a welcomed relief to be with people who understand their symptoms. “I have only been a member for 2 months and already feel more informed and comfortable” — a quote by a new member of the Spalding Support Group “I have been made very welcome and I feel

much more confident now I can talk to other people about my problems” — new lady member. The Spalding & District branch offers the chance for you to meet other people in your area, get information and take part in the activities we have on offer. “ Friendly meetings are held from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm on the third Thursday of each month at: Pinchbeck Village Hall Knight Street, Pinchbeck Spalding, PE11 3RB

Hay   Fever   Help!

by Hayley Willerton

H

ay fever is a type of allergic rhinitis caused by pollen or spores. Allergic rhinitis is a condition where an allergen (something that causes an allergic reaction) makes the inside of your nose inflamed. Hay fever affects the nose, sinuses (small air-filled cavities behind your cheekbones and forehead), throat and eyes. It causes: • sneezing, • a runny nose, and • itchy eyes. Hay fever usually occurs in spring and summer, when there is more pollen in the air. Trees, grass and plants release pollen as part of their reproductive process. Mould and fungi also release tiny reproductive particles, called spores. People with hay fever can experience their symptoms at different times of the year, depending on which pollens or spores they are allergic to. Allergic rhinitis can be classified as either intermittent or persistent, depending on how often people experience their symptoms

Allergic reaction

system (the body’s defence system) overreacts to a normally harmless substance, in this case pollen. When the body comes into contact with pollen, cells in the lining of the nose, mouth and eyes release a chemical called histamine. This triggers the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

How common is it? Hay fever is a common condition that affects around 20% of people in the UK. Hay fever is more likely if there is a family history of allergies, particularly asthma or eczema. In England, there may be over 10 million people with hay fever.

Outlook Hay fever cannot be cured completely, but there are a number of treatments available to relieve the symptoms. These include antihistamine tablets, nasal sprays and eye drops. Some can only be prescribed by a GP, but many are available over-the-counter in pharmacies. For persistent hay fever, a treatment known as immunotherapy can be used to gradually increase a person’s exposure to the allergen while monitoring their response. This can be effective at reducing the severity of an allergic reaction, but is not suitable for everyone. For more advice visit www.nhs.uk or why not try some of these alternative therapies that are thought to help the symptoms:

The symptoms of hay fever occur when the immune

Honey A 1995 study of pollen- sensitive patients found that they did not respond to honey with traces of pollen in it. This could suggest that honey desensitises the body to the pollen, so that it no longer causes a reaction. This in turn reduces hay fever symptoms. It is thought the more local the honey, the greater the results

Avoid The Pollen To stop pollen getting up your nose, a single clinical trial indicated that spreading a blocking cream inside the nostrils, such as Vaseline, can reduce the symptoms. And don’t forget to wash the dog after it comes in from rolling around in the grass.

Onions There is a suggestion that the chemical quercetin, found in many foods, can help to ward off hay fever. Onions contain a particularly high concentration of the chemical. There is no evidence that eating lots of onions is harmful. Do you have your own tip for helping Hay Fever sufferers? Powerful Joint   Venture Meets Surge In   Demand For Home-Produced Solar Energy

Advertisement Feature

Two well-known local companies have formed a new solar energy installation business to meet the upturn in demand for home-produced energy.

electricity generated by a renewable energy system which is used in the property, with an additional bonus for any energy produced which is exported to the electricity grid.

Manor Roofing Limited, a local well regarded roofing company and Cawoods Electrical, an established firm of Electrical Engineers and solar photovoltaic (PV) system designers, have joined forces to launch Manor Solar, a company that specialises in installing and maintaining solar PV panels on homes and properties in the East of England region. The new company’s new website www. manorsolarpower.co.uk, offering advice on the merits and benefits of solar PV panel installation, was launched this week.

government will specify that the installed system undergoes regular maintenance to ensure they continue to operate efficiently and the system owner could need to sign a declaration agreeing to meet their obligations under the scheme.

However, concerns that large-scale ‘industrial’ solar farms will suck up the majority of the available subsidy has led to an announcement by the energy secretary Chris Huhne in February this year that feed-in tariffs will no longer apply to large projects and that a comprehensive review of the feed-in tariff scheme will be taking place. Furthermore, a new scheme - the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) – will be introduced, probably in June 2011. While the RHI scheme is still being designed, the aim is to incentivise the generation of heat from renewable sources including solar thermal panels.

Commenting on the new venture, Contracts Director of Manor Roofing and co-founder of Manor Solar, Ian Holdup told us, “Solar energy is becoming more widespread in the UK, but we quickly realised that to give home owners the most appropriate products for their property requires the combined knowledge and expertise of qualified roofers and solar PV panel engineers. Our two firms offer expertise in our own field, which means we can provide a complete solution under the new company, not just a bolt on to our regular individual services.”

Mark Cawood, co-founder of Manor Solar explains why this is all good news for homeowners and owners of smaller properties where the energy production is likely to be less than 50 kilowatts. “The Feed-In Tariffs can appear to be almost too good to be true, giving everyone the chance to make their own energy, save money and help to make a difference to the environment, but there are some eligibility criteria that need to be met to qualify for the subsidy. Most importantly, all equipment and installers must be Microgeneration Certificate Scheme (MCS) certified for all systems under 50kW for new installations, while existing energy systems need to have been installed within qualifying dates.” Additionally, under the new RHI scheme, it is expected that the

It’s a fact that, for a nation that’s not known for its sunshine record, Solar Energy is starting to look increasingly attractive to home and property owners who now have the potential to become self-sufficient in energy while earning extra income. The introduction of Feed-In Tariffs (FITs) in 2010 led to a surge in interest in solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, with the Government offering guaranteed tax-free payments for renewable energy production. The Feed-In Tariffs, which were intended to encourage small-scale energy production by households, are based on the

As with all new technologies, renewable energy is still evolving, so it pays to do your homework if you are thinking about installing solar PV panels. This includes finding reliable, qualified installers to help you make a proper, informed decision on making an investment in renewable technologies for your home. Explaining why traditional roofing experience is essential to delivering well-designed solar systems, Ian Holdup told us, “Whilst the aim is to design and install a suitable solar PV system, it is imperative that the suitability and condition of the existing roof covering/structure is adequate for the long term. Our experience as a traditional roofing contractor coupled with Cawood Electrical’s expertise will ensure we install a system that is right for each individual client.” For more information about home-produced Solar Energy and installation options, visit www.manorsolarpower.co.uk.

Barbecue   Season is Here by Hayley Willerton How to Create The Perfect BBQ Build a pyramid shape with the charcoal and insert charcoal firelighters. Light and wait for 30 minutes. Use a barbecue tool to spread out the charcoal. Be patient, It’s not ready for cooking until the coals are white.

Be patient

The biggest mistake is to start cooking before the charcoal is ready. If your barbecue party starts at 7.00, light the barbecue at 6.30.

Storage

Store your charcoal in a cool dry place. A garage or shed is ideal but it must be off the floor. A plastic dustbin is ideal.

Tightwad or recycling?

When you have finished cooking, close the lid of the barbecue and close the air vents. In the morning you will be able to salvage some left over charcoal. Just place in a plastic throw-away shopping bag and shake. All the dust will have come off the charcoal and it will be ready to use again.

Barbecue Safety Choosing A Barbecue

There are many different types of barbecue on the market. Whichever one you choose, keep safety in mind. Besides the normal charcoal models, you can also purchase calor gas ones and do-it-yourself kits. Make sure your barbecue is sturdy as barbecues become deceptively hot and many cheaper models are extremely unstable. Look out for sharp edges and follow assembly instructions very carefully. Look for a barbecue with a fat collector to minimise smoke emissions and potential fire risk.

Barbecue Position

Position the barbecue well away from fences and trees. Ensure the site is level and not situated in a position where the barbecue can be knocked over.

Lighting Up

Always use the correct materials and fuels for lighting the barbecue and observe the manufacturer’s instructions. Look for child-proof caps when buying lighter fuel and always replace the cap after use. Never pour lighter fuel onto hot coals even if they appear to have gone out.

Food should not be left in the sunshine.

Keep combustible materials and matches away from the barbecue.

Consider Your Neighbours

Site the barbecue away from their homes. Do not disturb them with smoke or noise. (You can always invite them!)

Food Preparation And Cooking

Keep all utensils and plates for cooked foods separate from those used for uncooked food. All frozen food must be completely defrosted before cooking on a barbecue. Meat and other high risk foods should be kept in a refrigerator until needed.

To prevent contamination by insect pests, all food should be placed in sealed containers and be kept off the ground. Only kettle-style barbecues are suitable for cooking joints and whole chickens. Other types will not cook the meat thoroughly. Use a meat thermometer to check that the meat is cooked properly.

Remember These Safety Points To minimise accidents, ensure children are under constant supervision and never leave the barbecue unattended. Glassware is breakable and can be dangerous. Use plastic or disposable beakers and plates.

Barbecues tend to char food on the outside and leave the centre raw. All meat should be cooked thoroughly but portions of chicken and other poultry need particular care.

Ensure suitable fire fighting equipment is close at hand, e.g. garden hose/bucket of sand. Dispose of refuse in a covered bin so as not to attract insects and vermin.

It may be a good idea to pre-cook meats by conventional methods before finishing off on the barbecue.

Never put hot ashes directly into a dustbin. Wait until they have cooled down.

How to Create The Perfect BBQ

Cooking Fish on The BBQ

BBQ Recipes

the fish is wide open. While the ingredients above follow a Mediterranean theme, an easy Oriental version could include baby sweet corn spears, sliced bamboo shoots, and carrot strips. Add a little sake, rice wine or dry sherry to the vegetables and top the fish with the garlic and ginger mixed with thick soy sauce.

BBQ Side Dish

Chicken Kebabs

Cooking fish in sealed foil packages has to be one of the most foolproof barbecue seafood recipes. It’s also great for feeding a crowd as the packages can be preprepared and taken straight from the refrigerator to the barbeque.

Makes 4 skewers Ingredients: 1 skinless and boneless chicken breast 1/2 green pepper (cut into big cubes) 1/2 yellow pepper (cut into big cubes) 1/2 red pepper (cut into big cubes) Marinate: 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice 1/2 – 1 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon chilli flakes 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin seeds 1/4 of one small onion 2 cloves garlic 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley leaves (or dried parsley) For Cooking: 2 tablespoons olive oil (for brushing) Method: Cut the chicken into small cubes (a total of 16 pieces), pat dry and marinate with the ingredients for at least 1 hour, best if left in the fridge overnight. Thread four pieces of chicken meat with one piece of each of the peppers onto a metal skewer or bamboo skewer. Repeat the same and make four skewers. Set aside. Grill the chicken kebab on your BBQ until cooked. While grilling, brush the chicken and bell peppers with olive oil. Serve hot. Top Tip: If you use bamboo skewers, soak them in cold water overnight so they don’t get burned during the grilling process.

All you will need is: A roll of strong 30 cm wide aluminium foil One medium or several small fish fillets per person (bream, snapper, cod, salmon or whiting are ideal) Olive oil or butter Sliced pepper, Spanish onions, zucchini, capsicum, mushrooms A bunch of fresh thyme sprigs Black pepper Dry vermouth Place a 90 cm by 30 cm sheet of foil (shiny side up) and fold from the left to create a 45cm by 30 cm rectangle. Rub some oil or butter over the middle of the right hand side of the sheet and stack the vegetables (capsicum and onion first) then place fish (one medium fillet or two smaller ones) on top, splash a little vermouth over the fillets and finally add the thyme sprigs and pepper. Fold over the left hand side and then fold over the edges on the three open sides until they are well sealed. Place in the fridge until the BBQ is pre-heated. The packages can be cooked either by direct or indirect heat. I recommend direct as it results in some caramelising of the vegetables at the base of the parcels Within a minute or so of being placed on a hot grill the packages pump up indicating that the fish and vegetables are being cooked by steam produced from the flavouring liquid. Once the packages fill with steam, allow a further 8 minutes for thicker fillets, thinner fillets should only take about 5 minutes. Let the packages stand for another minute or two before serving. Just remember to tell people to slit the package with a knife as sometimes the escaping steam can burn fingers. The choice of vegetables and flavourings to go with

22  SIMPLY SPALDING  www.simply-spalding.co.uk

A good BBQ becomes a great BBQ with the addition of home meade coleslaw Serves 4 This recipe will make enough to serve 4 people, plus leftovers. It will keep in the fridge for two days. Ingredients A small onion (red onions are best, they’re not too strong) Two medium sized carrots A small white cabbage A jar of mayonnaise A large pot of Greek Yoghurt Black pepper Method: Chop the onion in half, then slice it into very thin halfmoon shapes. Put the onion pieces into a large bowl. Peel the carrots and grate them, using the large section of the grater. Watch your fingers! When you only have a small chunk left, STOP GRATING! To prepare the cabbage, peel away the outside layer of leaves. Using a sharp knife, slice off a chunk of the cabbage. Cabbages are tough and are hard to cut into, so be careful. Put the chunk of cabbage flat onto a chopping board, and cut it into thin slices, cut these long strips into shorter ones, of about 3cm. Add these to the bowl and mix them in with the onion and carrot. Then slice off another chunk of cabbage and repeat the process until most of the cabbage is used up. Add three tablespoons of mayonnaise and three tablespoons of yoghurt to the vegetables. Using two spoons, slowly stir the creamy mixture through the vegetables until it is evenly mixed. Add some black pepper to your own taste.

r e n r o C s ’ t Pe Don’t give fleas a chance! It started with a suspicious ‘scratch-scratch-scratch’, followed by a rather puzzled look on my cat’s face. I tried to ignore it, attempting to fool myself by saying to myself: “Well maybe it’s just an ‘itch’.”

It is believed that within two hours of an egg being laid on to your pet it is deposited into bedding, furniture or flooring within a home.

But I knew better. The paranoia set in and I began to think my growing collection of mosquito bites could be attributed to little jumpy things. I began fearlessly combing through my cat’s fur, desperate to nab one of the blighters and affect my revenge.

The freshly hatched larvae are just two to five milimetres long, but despite their diminutive stature are quite capable of moving 46cm through carpet to distance themselves from light, of which they have a great dislike. The larvae feed on adult flea feces, enjoying a good blood meal courtesy of their friends and family on a regular basis.

And finally, there it was – making a mad dash for freedom to the top of my cat’s head. A flea.

The larvae stage of a flea’s life ranges from 5 to 11 days depending on environmental conditions.

A flea circus Call it a flea circus or call it a flea market; wherever a flea hangs his hat is his home and he’s not going anywhere in a hurry. No; if you’ve spotted tiny little black particles (flea feces) close to the root of your pet’s hair it could be evidence that your pet is turning into a walking smorgasbord. Sad but true, once you spot a flea you can guarantee they are living the high-life deep in the midst of your cat or dog’s fur and only a swift course of action is going to see them kicked to the curb. To effectively stop a flea infestation you need to understand their life cycle, of which there are four stages.

EGG A flea egg is shaped like an oval and rounded at both ends. Although slightly transparent initially, they mature to a pearly white and are clearly visible to the naked eye.

26  SIMPLY SPALDING  www.simply-spalding.co.uk

LARVAE

PUPAE Once fully developed, the larvae weave a silky cocoon and pupate. Once developed to a pupa, it begins the transformation into an adult flea. A flea can survive in its cocoon for up to a year whilst waiting for warmer temperatures to come, providing ideal conditions for them to emerge from the safety of their cocoons

ADULT FLEA Once out of the cocoon, the newly hatched flea begins to look for its first blood meal. Their powerful legs, which can see them reach a height of over 30cm, enable them to jump on to their hosts ensuring a steady supply of food. Once a host is found the female flea will find a mate, lay her eggs, and once more the cycle begins.

Jump into action Flea control : To tackle fleas you need to treat both the environment and the pet. There are a number of products available at Rookes to help you to do this. It may take several weeks before the fleas are fully eradicated so you need to be prepared to persevere with the treatment program. Environment: Treat the environment using flea control spray. This can be used to treat your pet’s bedding and your couches, carpets, rugs – anywhere that a flea egg could have been deposited. Once-a-month topical applications: These are the most effective method of eradicating a flea infestation. Many of these products kill both fleas and ticks and are easy to apply, needing a single application monthly to the back of the neck. Generally products such as these are sold in a six-pack, and can be used at the approach of summer and throughout the warmer months to ensure fleas do not find a home on your pet. It is ESSENTIAL however, that you check the ingredients and do NOT use any product containing permethrins on cats. This product is poisonous to cats and can cause an extreme reaction. Many products made specifically for dogs cannot be used on cats.

It is advised that collars are used in combination with sprays to fully tackle the problem. Collars containing amitraz, permetrin or organophosphates are not to be used on felines. Other products available are powders and tablets, and foggers are also available as a household treatment. Don’t be disheartened if you see a flea a month after beginning your treatment regime. The unique life cycle of the flea means that it may take a couple of months before they are fully eradicated from your home. Persistence is key!

Sprays: A spray should be used carefully, ensuring no product is applied close to the animals eyes or ears – a cotton ball can be used to apply the product in these areas. Shampoos: Flea shampoos are only effective for removing adult fleas from your pet. They are not effective in treating eggs and for this reason, additional protection should be used. Check the ingredients as many shampoos contain pyrethrins which must never be used on cats. Collars: Collars should be worn so that two fingers can be comfortably inserted between the collar and the cat’s neck. Read the instructions carefully to understand the length of effectiveness of the collar.

Nature

The Common Frog by Jeremy Eyeons

T

his common much-loved amphibian brings excitement and interest to our garden ponds throughout the Spring and Summer months. Heres a few facts however about the frog that you may not have been aware of and, like many things in life, with the frog its a numbers game.........

successful will embrace the female with his forelimbs (this is called a “amplexus” and usually happens in April).A female can lay up to 4000 eggs, (unfortunately only a very small number of these eggs will survive to form adult frogs; perhaps about 10,the majority having been eaten by predators such as fish, grass snakes and birds) which are then fertilised by the male.

Common frogs can breathe through their skin aswell as their lungs. This enables it to hibernate for the Winter months beneath piles of mud and decaying leaves at the bottom of the garden pond and rivers.

Frogspawn floats to the surface so that it can be warmed by the sun, and tadpoles will begin to gradually emerge after about 20/30 days depending upon the weather. The spawn and pond algae provide an immediate source of food for the young hungry tadpoles.

A female frog can be slightly larger (perhaps 10cm long compared to 8cm) than the male, and an average frog could weigh about 23 grams. In the wild, a frog can live up to 7/8 years. Perhaps the most studied and fascinating part of a frogs life is its reproduction cycle from tadpole to adult. A frog becomes sexually mature at about 3 years, and during March the frogs begin to emerge from their Winter hibernation at the bottom of ponds and rivers, making their way to their favoured breeding grounds (shallow, still garden ponds are ideal),which are often the same places which they themselves were born.

The tadpole changes into to frog over a period of perhaps 16 weeks through a process called “metamorphosis”. After 9 weeks they loose their gills, having developed lungs, and therefore need to swim to the surface to breathe. Hind legs develop between 6/9 weeks, and the front legs are fully grown after about 11 weeks. The tadpole tail begins to be absorbed by the developing frog and has almost disappeared completely after 12 weeks. It’s a fascinating process, which is very variable time-wise, with so many factors such as availability of food, presence of predators and weather conditions all taking their toll.

The males try to entice females by producing a low purring croaky noise which can be heard up to 150 feet away, and if

Outside the breeding season frogs can be found in grass meadows, river banks, garden borders and woodland

searching for food ( insects, slugs, snails and worms). So there we are, the Common Frog.....it’s easy to attract into your garden, and it’s another way to attract and enjoy nature at home!

House & Home

Selling   your home

by Sue Hessom

S

elling your home is one of the most stressful things you will do. Opening your private space to opinionated strangers is not an easy task, no matter how good your interior skills. In order to avoid months of relentless visits and disappointments, here are a few tips that will soon have your home in tip-top condition:De-personalise your space

When it comes to the inside of your property, you can’t be sentimental about the things you surround yourself with. They may have great meaning to you, but they will mean absolutely nothing to a potential buyer, so pack away all those family photographs and family heirlooms as they will only serve to distract the buyer. Same rules apply to any trophies or any unusual personal collections you may have i.e. pig ornaments.

De-clutter

We all collect an amazing amount of objects over the years. We don’t necessarily use them or ‘see’ them any

longer; we just leave them where they were dumped, gathering dust. Now is the perfect time to clear them out. Car boot them, give them to a charity shop or wrap them up and put them somewhere safe. Be harsh – no keeping things ‘just-in-case’ – if you haven’t used it in the last six months then it’s unlikely you will. Do the same with children toys, old clothes, overflowing book shelves and stacks of old bills.

Fix

Check your house for those little niggling jobs that you’ve been ignoring for months. The less imperfections a viewer sees the better. So now is the perfect time to replace those broken tiles and damaged worktops; repair those leaking taps and creaking floorboards, to check all internal doors open and close properly and to examine skirting boards, light switches and plug sockets for splashes of paint.

Clean

Everywhere! Sweep all walls and corners with a feather duster. Clear out all cupboards, wardrobes and check out the new site for local residents, find local businesses, advice, events, items for sale and exclusive offers

bathroom cabinets – anything that can be opened by a ‘nosey’ viewer as dirty, untidy, cramped storage gives the impression there is not enough space. The same applies for your white goods - clean the inside of the fridge, freezer, cooker, washing machine and dryer. Clean the windows inside and out, clean the curtains/ blinds. Ensure internal and external doors are cleaned and dust free. If you have pets, wash their bedding to help keep pet smells at bay and try to keep pet hair to a minimum.

Room staging

You need to ensure every room has a purpose and that purpose is clear. You don’t want a viewer scratching their head wondering what the room is used for. Living Room This is where the new owners want to picture themselves relaxing so it’s important to make the right impression. The illusion of space is key so don’t have a cramped room on display – remove any unnecessary pieces of furniture so the room look spacious. If you

have a fantastic view, don’t cover it up with heavy net curtains and lots of knickknacks on the window sill – keep it simple. If you’ve got patio doors, don’t have a settee blocking their access. Play around with the placement of furniture until you are happy with the welcome it gives. Floor needs to be clean and tidy so if necessary get your carpets professionally cleaned. Cover any worn settees with throws. Invest in some new cushions and lampshades if things are looking slightly worn and if necessary brighten up with a coat of paint and some matching accessories. Remember hide any kids or pet toys from view. Dining Room Same rules apply here as for the living room. You can either set the table or have a nice centre piece on show. Make sure that chairs are tucked under and that there is enough space to move around comfortably.

Kitchen Clear as much from the worktops as possible. Have minimum items on display. Make sure towels are fresh and clean. If the kitchen is looking dated, replace existing handles with new ones. Keep any kids artwork to a minimum, likewise if you have cookery books on display. Have fruit displayed in a bowl but make sure it’s fresh. Bedrooms Must feel welcoming so neat and tidy is a must. No clothes on display, carpets nice, fluffy and spotless. Bedding should be clean, ironed and matching. Invest in some new bedding and cushions if necessary and add a vase of fresh flowers. Make sure all clothes are hanging neatly in the wardrobes and shoes are kept tidy. Bathrooms Hide away as many of your personal grooming items as possible. Put kids’ toys away. Invest in some expensive looking soaps and hand creams to put on display. Clean, matching towels are a must.

ABR create the ‘WOW’ factor in just three weeks!

A

Spalding couple living in a standard three bedroom detached home approached ABR wanting them to create an open plan living space. The ground floor of their home consisted of a lounge diner, kitchen, conservatory, utility and cloakroom. After meeting with ABR to discuss their budget, options, likes & dislikes they decided to leave the complete design and renovation to ABR, right down to the final paint choices. The couple were jetting off for a three week holiday to Florida and decided this would be the perfect time for the renovation to take place. ABR had only three weeks to completely transform the ground floor of this home. ABR changed it from a lounge diner and kitchen to a lounge and kitchen diner. The conservatory was at the end of the dining room with patio doors but was always either too hot or too cold and became a part of the home that was never used. They made the conservatory part of the large open plan space by removing the patio doors, boarding over high quality insulation to ensure energy efficiency then plastering the ceiling. The kitchen is the heart of the home and the results are amazing! The stylish kitchen units are set off by the solid oak work surfaces and the flowing Karndean wood flooring throughout creating a light and airy feel which is further enhanced by the carefully selected ‘timeless’ paint colours. The neutral colours combined with different textures such as the stone wall tiles and feature suede paint creates a simple yet stunning look.

Dangerous Household byProducts Hayley Willerton Through sad, personal experience recently where our cat was poisoned with anti freeze and had to be put to sleep I have carried out a lot of research and realised there are many household products that are dangerous not just to pets but humans too. Here is my advice on some of the most common household products that are extremely dangerous to animals and humans. Although a variety of things in and around your home can cause poisoning, including plants and foods, ten types of common poison in the household are considered to be the most hazardous. The ten most dangerous household products are: Antifreeze Bleach Drain cleaner Furniture polish Fuel Insecticide Iron-containing vitamins Medicine Nail polish remover Windscreen wiper fluid. Each of these products is a common poison that you may use every day, not realising the danger. However, if you learn to recognize the signs of poisoning, you can respond immediately in the case of an emergency. Symptoms of Common Household Poisons  Symptoms of poisoning vary depending on many factors,

including the type and severity of the poisoning and the individual. However, some general symptoms of household poisoning include: For Humans: Burns on or around the mouth General pain in the body Loss of consciousness Trouble breathing Vomiting. If you or someone you know experiences these symptoms, seek medical attention right away by calling 999. For Animals  In addition to the items above Animals’ metabolism is much different than humans’ metabolism. Just because a human can ingest something and feel fine doesn’t mean it will have the same effect on animals. There are many dangerous products in your home that can be poisonous to your pet that you may not be aware of. Here is a list of a few: Foods: Chocolate is harmful to a dog’s heart and nervous system. Even a small amount can be dangerous to your pet. Healthy foods for humans contain toxins that are very dangerous to your animal’s health, such as avocados, raisins, grapes, and onions. It’s very important not to feed your pet leftover foods containing these ingredients to protect their kidneys and digestive tracts. Treats should be limited to pet friendly options, not cooked bones, as the bone could splinter and tear your dog’s internal organs. Fruit pips should also be taken into consideration, such as those from apples, peach pits, and cherries because they contain cyanide, which is a poison. Plants: Dogs and cats sometimes like to munch on your houseplants, so it’s important we remember to keep these types out of their reach or out of the house. Oleander, Mistletoe, Azaleas, Rhododendron, Tulip Bulbs, aloe and Lily Plants are the most commonly ingested, but many pet owners aren’t aware that just one leaf

40  SIMPLY SPALDING  www.simply-spalding.co.uk

from a plant can be deadly to our loved ones. What to Look For  Animals can’t tell us how they’re feeling, so it’s up to us as owners to monitor our pets closely and notice when they’re not acting like themselves. Many times a sick or hurt pet will display changes in their behaviour or act lethargic rather than showing more obvious symptoms. Any change in normal behaviours is a good indication that you need to schedule an appointment with your vet. There are several red-flags that will let you know when you’re pet needs to be seen by his or her vet immediately. The clinical signs are very variable and will depending on the particular poison concerned. Many toxins produce gastrointestinal signs (vomiting and diarrhoea), others produce neurological signs (tremors, in-coordination, seizures, excitability, depression, or coma), respiratory signs (coughing, sneezing, difficulty breathing), skin signs (inflammation, swelling), liver failure (jaundice, vomiting) or kidney failure (increased drinking, loss of appetite and weight loss). Some toxins act on more than one body system, and so can produce any combination of the above signs. It is important to remember that while most cases of intoxication will cause acute problems, chronic intoxication can also arise, and often proves even more difficult to recognise and treat. Poison Safety Tips and Treatments  Despite the fact that household products like antifreeze and furniture polish are each considered a household poison, you can still take measures to use them safely in your home. Several poison safety tips can help to ensure that you and your loved ones remain healthy, including: • Don’t put any sort of hazardous household product in a drink or food container. • Educate everyone in your home about which household products are poisonous and which ones are safe. • Keep all medications, cleaners, poisonous plants and other poisonous substances on high shelves where children or animals cannot reach them. • Label all of your cleaners, medications and food to indicate the expiration date and proper instructions for use. Aside from these preventative safety tips, if an emergency poisoning situation does occur, you can take several steps to treat the situation, such as: • Be sure the victim is getting enough air. If needed, give the victim CPR or take him outside to get fresh air. • Have the victim spit out the remainder of any ingested poison; do not induce vomiting. • Treat any burns with an emergency aid kit (be sure to wear protective clothing). I hope this guide will help you and your family keep safe, remember to read the label and should you have any suspicions your child or pet has been exposed call the emergency services or vets immediately.

Renault Laguna Sport Tourer   GT Line TomTom dCi 150  by Tim Barnes-Clay

www.twitter.com/barnesclaymedia ACCORDING TO a recent study, the average male driver travels an extra 276 miles every year as a result of being lost. Women will only persevere for 256 miles. The research by Sheila’s Wheels car insurance found that 12 percent of men refuse to ask a stranger for help at all, yet 74 percent of women have no hang-ups about asking for directions. This lost driver time could be costing as much as £2,000 in fuel in a lifetime. All this getting lost malarkey could be avoided if you buy a car with sat-nav built in. Or, of course, you could just buy a cheap one and stick it to the windscreen, like most people so. However, if you do want a fuss-free sat-nav, and you’re after a decent sized family estate, then why not take a look at the Renault Laguna Sport Tourer TomTom 2.0 dci 150? I had the flagship GT Line TomTom model on test recently, and I was pretty impressed with it. Renault’s provision of an integrated Carminat TomTom® satellite navigation system remains a core feature of the Laguna’s specification, made even more user friendly for the 2011 range with the addition of live traffic data analysis to help avoid hold-ups on programmed itineraries. But what is the refreshed Laguna like? Well, the French car maker’s mile-muncher displays assertive new front-end styling that immediately distinguishes it from its predecessor. Under the skin, important

changes have been made too, with revisions to the range of powertrains that deliver lower emissions and better fuel economy, without compromising on performance. The 2011 version of the Laguna is offered in a simplified range structure with three comprehensively specified trim levels: Expression, Dynamique TomTom and, at the top-of-the-range, the GT Line TomTom. The choice of engines includes 150, 175 and 180hp versions of the 2.0 dCi unit and a 2.0 16V 140 petrol engine. But is it attractive? Yes, much more so than before. In fact, the Laguna Sport Tourer is, undeniably, a good looking estate car. The steeply raked rear screen is pleasing to the eye and, in GT Line TomTom trim, the profile is almost sexy. Other exterior styling features include a sports grille, air intakes and pearl black mirror housings. Twin chrome tailpipes complete the picture, alongside 18 inch alloys, which have a dark, very appealing, Shadow Chrome finish. Inside, it’s all very plush and well screwed together. Cabin detail touches include combination leather and alcantara upholstery, aluminium pedals, electrically adjustable heated front seats and a 10-speaker BOSE premium audio system. The dashboard design in particular accentuates the Laguna 2011’s top-of-the-range feel, the positioning of all the controls having been re-thought to deliver the best ergonomic solution for visibility and ease of use.

42  SIMPLY SPALDING  www.simply-spalding.co.uk

The seat design allows for good passenger comfort (so my wife tells me) with a high level of lateral support. It is also easy to find the ideal driving position, with a wide range of height adjustment and independent seat back angle adjustment. Rear seat passengers benefit from large headrests and more generous knee room, thanks to a slimmer front seatback design. The load area in the Sport Tourer uses Renault’s ‘Super-fold’ system for quick and easy folding of the rear seats. A pull of a lever located on either side of tailgate aperture is all that is needed for the seats to fold automatically, leaving a perfectly flat load floor over two metres in length. For added convenience, four control levers are provided, two in the tailgate pillar and the other two on either side of the rear seats.

gladly have one. The 2011 Laguna Sports Tourer is big enough for the kids, it’ll swallow all the shopping and it’s more than happy to effortlessly eat up the motorways miles. In fact I’d quite happily get ‘lost’ driving a new Laguna all day - the trouble is the wife would soon cotton on – it’s virtually impossible to pretend you don’t know where you are with the GT Line TomTom model.

Pros ‘N’ Cons

þ Attractive þ Spacious þ Comfortable ý Renault image

On the road, the Laguna is responsive and steering is quick and direct. The decent feedback at the wheel is down to variable hydraulic assistance, which automatically adjusts the level of assistance in line with vehicle speed. This makes low-speed manoeuvring easier, and gives firmer performance for safer and more precise steering at high speed.

Fast Facts

A Renault might not be something badge snobs would consider, and, to be honest, the whole Laguna experience surprised me. I actually enjoyed my time with the car and, as a family man, I would

Sport

Anyone for

Tennis? by Hayley Willerton

With tennis fresh in our minds after Wimbledon it may be just the time to take up a new sporting activity. Tennis is a sport usually played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a racket that is strung to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over a net into the opponent’s court. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society at all ages. The sport can be played by anyone who can hold a racket, including people in wheelchairs.

History of Tennis: Early Years

The history of tennis dates back several thousand years. The game was first created by European monks to be played for entertainment purposes during religious ceremonies. To begin with, the ball was hit with the hand. Soon the leather glove came into existence. This was soon replaced with an adaptive handle for effective hitting and serving of the ball. The modern game of tennis originated in Birmingham, England in the late 19th century as “lawn tennis” which has close connections to various field/lawn games as well as to the ancient game of real tennis. The rules of tennis have not changed much since the 1890s. Two exceptions are that from 1908 to 1961 the server had to keep one foot on the ground at all times, and the adoption of the tie-break in the 1970s. A recent addition to professional tennis has been the adoption of electronic review technology coupled with a point challenge system, which allows a player to challenge the line (or chair)

umpire’s call of a point. Players have unlimited opportunity to challenge, but once three incorrect challenges are made in a set, they cannot challenge again until the next set. If the set goes to a tie break, players are given one additional opportunity to challenge the call.

Scoring

To put the tennis scoring system as simply as possible, the winner is the player(s) who wins: • four points to win a game

• six games to win a set • two (or, more rarely, three) sets to win a match Assuming the players are called A and B • By winning a coin toss or a spin of the racquet, A gets to choose one of the following: • serve • receive serve • choose an end of the court • have B choose Let’s say A chooses to serve. B then gets to choose an end of the court. A may serve from anywhere behind her baseline between the right singles sideline and the center mark. The serve must be struck before the ball bounces, and it must land in the service box diagonally opposite her. She gets two chances to get a serve in. If she misses both, she loses the point. If a serve that is otherwise good nicks the net on its way in, it is redone. If A gets her serve in, B must return the ball, after exactly one bounce, into any part of A’s singles court. A and B must then return the ball, after no more than one bounce, into one another’s singles court until one of them misses. A will serve from the left side of her baseline for the second point of the game, and she will continue to alternate right and left for the start of each point of the game. Let’s say A wins the first point. At the start of the next point, she must announce the score, her point total first: “15 - love.” (Love = 0.) B wins the next point:

“15 all.” B wins the next point: “15 - 30.” A wins the next point: “30 all.” A wins the next point: “40 - 30.” If A wins the next point, she wins the game. If B wins the next point, the score is “40 all,” which is called “deuce.” At deuce, one player must win the next two points to win the game. If, at deuce, A wins the next point, she has the advantage, and the score is called “ad in,” which means server’s advantage. If B had won that point, the score would have been “ad out.” If the player having the advantage wins the following point, he or she wins that game. If the player with the advantage loses the point, the score returns to deuce. With traditional scoring, games can go back and forth from deuce to ad over and over. The “No Ad” variation on the scoring within games allows for a game to be won by a margin of one point. Instead of “15,”“30,” and “40” used to note points, players may use “1,”“2,” and “3.” At “3 all,” the receiver may choose whether to receive in the left or right service box. The winner of that point wins the game.

History of Wimbledon

The history of Wimbledon dates way back to 1875 when the All England Croquet Club was cajoled into setting aside a bit of its land on Worple Street for lawn tennis. The club had been suffering a bit of a slump and was battling to attract new membership. With the introduction of the ever increasingly popular summer sport, lawn tennis, all this changed, and the club was forced to move with the times and amend its name to the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. As with today, rental on land in the late 19th century was dear in the city of London, and in an effort to pay for the four acres of prime property, additional funds had to be raised. The first ever lawn tennis tournament was organised, and in 1877 22 players competed before 200 spectators at the first Wimbledon Championships. The championships soon caught the imagination of the public and became more popular as every year went by. It was not long before Wimbledon men’s tennis champions began to emerge, and one of the first was a man called William Renshaw. The Brit managed to rake in no fewer than seven singles titles, six of which were back-to-back, an unbelievable record which still stands today, 118 years on. The turn of the ladies to compete on the hallowed lawns of the All England Club came as early as 1884, a mere seven years after the first men’s singles event. The men’s doubles was included at the same championships, whereas the ladies doubles and mixed doubles events were added in 1913. The championships were discontinued for the duration of both great wars, and after the Second World War, the face of Wimbledon changed. Long trousers and dresses with stockings were replaced by shorts and shorter skirts, and the period of British dominance was a thing of the past. In fact, no British man has lifted the title since Fred Perry in1936 and only three British women have been successful – Angela Mortimer in 1961, Ann Haydon-Jones in 1969 and Virginia Wade in 1977. If you would like to get involved with your local Lawn Tennis club, why not join Spalding Lawn Tennis Club? They offer full coaching and welcome players of all ages and abilities.
