Mother & Daughter Girls Day Out By Ericka La Madrid

We all like to multi-task and squeeze as many things as we can in all the hours and minutes of every day each week. As mothers we also have come to know that having children of our own changes our life forever. As moms, we are high-paced and high energy traveling sometimes so fast that we really don't have any time left. In fact, we hardly have a moment for ourselves much less time for others. That is when we need to slow down and take time to speak with our children and develop communication, strengthening this powerful bond between parent and child. The bond between a mother and daughter is extremely important and we should focus on building our daughter’s self-esteem with encouraging words and actions of love. How can we accomplish that, one might ask? I create a special day between my daughter and I usually once a month. We create a special day just for the two of us. Our day begins like this. . . 9am: We are on our way to the Nail Salon for a manicure and pedicure. I bring a transparent nail polish for my younger daughter so I can do her nails between my appointments. I become her make-believe manicurist. 10am: We are at the mall strolling along and window shopping from store to store checking out the latest clothes and shoes. shopping is girls favorite things to do! 11am: On our way for lunch at a nice restaurant. It is best to call ahead to make a reservation and don't forget to explain your special day to the reservationist. Some restaurants will offer you a special discount or additional touches for such a nice day. 1pm: Stop by the playground just in front of the mall. One of our favorites is Fleischman Park. It is a nice park with a divided playground for toddlers/babies and older children. You will find a water splash area, swings, and slides. This awesome park also has volleyball courts, skate ramps, as well as large fields to run and jump. 3pm: Heading home, tired and happy! What a great day of quality mom and daughter time together. A day like this is guaranteed to bring wonderful memories of you and your precious girl. Let's do it again soon my beautiful little princess. Spring 2010

What started as one woman’s inspiring dream has quickly become the dream of many Southwest Florida families, children and visitors. Allyson Loos, the woman behind the Children’s Museum of Naples (C’mon) always had a love of kids –first babysitting as a teen in Lancaster, Penn., then studying child psychology in college and eventually becoming mother to two beautiful children of her own, Ben and Bianca. She never imagined the full extent of where this passion would lead her, however, until the family’s life took a tragic turn, with the unexpected passing of 13-month-old Bianca from bacterial meningitis in 1999. The Loos’ wanted Bianca’s life to live on through helping others and took time to think about how to best use a fund they had set up for her in a way that would make the most impact on the lives of other children. While deciding what to do, Ally was struck with a dream one night in which Bianca showed her a children’s museum that she had never seen before in real life. After awaking with the vivid images still clear in her mind, Ally now knew what she had to do. “Losing Bianca was tragic, but I knew her message to me was a way to bring much needed joy and play to families and children,” expressed Loos. “And Bianca was right. In a place as amazing as Naples, there is a piece missing.” In early 2002, Loos brought together a small group of talented moms to begin formulating the plan to build a children’s museum in Naples. Today, Loos and her ad hoc group of moms have successfully galvanized a well-organized group of community members that serve as the Children’s Museum of Naples’ staff, board members, capital campaign task force members, donors, volunteers and a think tank of kids. “I’m known as the founder of C’mon but I’m really just the messenger,” said Loos. “I’m passing on Bianca’s message. The community should really be known as the founder because of all the generosity it has shown us through supporting the museum.” Scheduled to open in 2011 on the site of North Collier Regional Park on Livingston Road, the Children’s Museum of Naples will be Southwest Florida’s first learning environment devoted exclusively to child’s play, through discovery which helps children attain hallmark milestones on the journey into adulthood. It will be an exciting, inspiring environment where children and their families play, learn and dream together. More than a building, the 30,000-square-foot green-constructed museum will feature 13 spectacularly designed, child-scaled exhibits to invite sensory and intellectual exploration. Unique to a children’s museum, C’mon will feature two permanent art collections; One of American fine art depicting children and animals as the subjects and the second from the personal collection of Dr. Ernestine O’Connell of Venice, Fla., who passed away in October. The collection had been assembled for more than 50 years by O’Connell, a world traveler with a passion for learning about cultures around the world. Comprising more than 2,000 ceremonial, decorative and everyday objects, the O’Connell Collection includes masks, textiles, dolls and puppets from countries including Kenya, Brazil, China, Australia, India and Cuba. O’Connell’s treasures will be exhibited at the museum’s World Café exhibit which will feature a different culture every quarter through arts and crafts, music, language, food and geography. “The excitement surrounding the Children’s Museum of Naples comes even before its completion,” said Comcast Vice President Barbara Hagen. “Comcast has made a commitment to support the museum’s education outreach programs for two years. The grant from the Comcast Foundation will bring the museum’s educational programs to the children in Collier and Lee Counties. Through community partnerships and this educational outreach program grant will encourage and inspire our children and their families to play, learn and dream together.”

WGCU is partnering with the Children’s Museum of Naples to sponsor the Curious Kids exhibit designed to teach pre-adolescents about the environment, health and wellness and cultural diversity, as part of a five-year agreement. “The collaboration between WGCU Public Media and the Children’s Museum of Naples is a natural partnership that will benefit kids and families throughout Southwest Florida,” said WGCU General Manager Rick Johnson. “WGCU’s Curious Kids initiative at C’mon will use the same ingredients that have made PBS Kids programs successful to engage, entertain and educate visitors at this beautiful new children’s museum.” Curious Kids will feature revolving activities and exhibits geared toward 8 to 13 year olds, with special focus on exercise and nutrition and global culture. Staffed full-time by museum staff or trained volunteers, Curious Kids will feature a diverse array of idea-inspiring tools such as computers, science experiments and art supplies. PBS Kids-themed programming will augment exhibits. “This is a terrific collaboration because the museum is all about engagement, activity and learning in a fun environment,” said WGCU Outreach Coordinator Paula Sklodowski. “This gives us a partner and a home for additional interaction in the community and with the children and parents who watch PBS. It’s another place to meet them and get involved.”

Free Education Series at Waterside Shops and Bell Tower Shops While the Children’s Museum of Naples is under construction, programs reaching our area’s children are well underway throughout Southwest Florida. C’mon’s popular education series continues at Waterside Shops and the free programs are expanding into Lee County at Bell Tower Shops on US 41 and Daniels Parkway.
