Message from the National President Welcome to Spring Semester 2014! Next month, The Chicago School will celebrate and recognize the achievements of African Americans to our nation and democracy. The precursor to Black History Month was created in 1926 in the U.S. States, when historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History announced the second week of February to be "Negro History Week." The celebration was expanded to a month in 1976, the nation's bicentennial.

The Chicago School takes great pride in its commitment to cultural awareness and competence. Some time ago, I formed the President’s Blue Ribbon Diversity Task Force to develop, promote and strategically explore diversity initiatives in practice, curriculum and policy across all campuses. Currently underway is a diversity audit of courses, and the creation of a Diversity Affairs Commitee on our Los Angeles and D.C. Campuses, to name a few initiatives. During Black History Month, a number of events will take place across all campuses—from movie screenings to dialogues to presentations, and local excursions. A few of these events will be broadcast to the entire TCSPP community via GoToMeeting. Please look for information around the campuses, and join the celebration! Warm regards, Michele Nealon-Woods, Psy.D.

During winter break, several enhancements were made to the Washington, D.C. Campus to better reflect the TCSPP brand and to provide a student-centered environment. In addition to the new lighted window display featuring the TCSPP logo, which will be visible to pedestrian and street traffic, the central lobby area was re-purposed as a computer/laptop friendly study space for students with a large scale brand installation and communal seating area. New Annual Giving Campaign Launched By Dr. Orlando Taylor, Chief Advancement Officer

Last year, we unveiled—through our Annual Fund Campaign—Opportunity Scholarships for students with compelling needs for financial support to advance in their graduate studies. Through this effort, we raised the largest amount for the Annual Fund Campaign in The Chicago School’s history. The need-based Opportunity Scholarships are valued at $2,500 each, and are being actively used by students to defray their educational costs and to ensure their continued success. Because of your generosity, 25 students received awards in December 2013. I am pleased to report that we've kicked off the 2013-14 Annual Fund Campaign, and we're asking TCSPP faculty, staff and alumni nationwide to give generously to this year’s Campaign, Open the Door to Opportunity—a

continuation of our efforts to help the many deserving students. Read more here.

TCSPP Unveils New Marketing Campaign

The Chicago School's new marketing campaign was officially launched on January 1 in Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, D.C. The new campaign focuses on what makes The Chicago School unique and also on the essence of what the institution is working to accomplish. In addition, the campaign embraces humanity by using emotional images of hands representing the fundamentals of care, service and work, which are part of the core values of the school, and what students will do after graduation. The overall tone of the campaign is to create YOU as the topic and propose a reflection of yourself. The viewer can easily connect themselves in this moment and simultaneously become emotionally inspired to pursue the next step of inquiring.

Student Affairs Hosts "Being the Change" On February 10, Student Affairs departments across all TCSPP campuses will host "Being the Change: Poverty; Turning Conversation Into Action." Based on America's Sunday Supper, a national event typically held on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the initiative encourages people from diverse backgrounds to come together, share a meal and discuss issues impacting their community. The objective of "Being the Change" is to have each campus come away with a plan to address the issue of poverty in their own communities. More "Being the Change" events may be planned in the future.

Meet Alumnae Susan Edem, M.A. A recipient of an M.A. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology last summer from the Chicago Campus, Susan Edem is already applying her knowledge as Learning and Development Coordinator at

Citadel Investment Group (Citadel LLC) in Chicago. She is responsible for the coordination of firm-wide and new-hire training and development. She works with the firms' businesses to implement training programs, oversees learning management systems and online training portals, and identifies new instruments, vendors and corporate trainers/coaches, as well as assists in the management of budgets and logistics that enhance the growth potential of Citadel employees. "The education I received at TCSPP has equipped me with the necessary skills and ability, and is relevant to the work I am doing. The practical application of theory throughout my coursework decreased the learning curve once I began my position," says Susan. "I have no doubt that my Master of Arts degree has provided me with a bright career outlook."

Agency Fairs Provide Students with Many Practicum Opportunities

For the third consecutive year, Agency Fairs were held at both the Los Angeles Campus and Irvine Branch Campus. The purpose of the events is to allow TCSPP practicum sites and students the chance to meet prior to the students submitting applications. In total, nearly 160 students were able to meet with 43 agencies to explore practicum opportunities. Mission Statement Integrating theory, professional practice, and innovation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology provides an excellent education for careers in psychology and related behavioral and health sciences. The school is committed to service and embraces the diverse communities of our society. Our logo symbolizes: Education • Innovation • Service • Community
