LORI B. ANDREWS

I Know Who You Are and I Saw What You Did: Social Networks and the Death of Privacy FREE PRESS 2012, PAPERBACK 2013

How can you protect the privacy of your digital self? In this book,

Professor Andrews explores how our digital identities on the Web— email, personal websites and social media pages—are starting to

overshadow our physical identities, and she shows how people can

fight back. Professor Andrews ignites a battle for further protections, from a right to connect to a right to privacy, and proposes a Social Network Constitution to protect us all.

BERNADETTE ATUAHENE

We Want What’s Ours: Learning from South Africa’s Land Restitution Program OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS 2014

Land dispossession occurring in South Africa during colonialism and

apartheid is a quintessential example of “dignity takings,” which involves the

deprivation of property and dignity. South Africa has attempted to move from reparations to “dignity restoration,” which is a more comprehensive remedy that seeks to restore property and dignity. Professor Atuahene’s interviews

with over 150 South Africans who participated in the nation’s land restitution program provide a snapshot of South Africa’s successes and failures in achieving dignity restoration.

FELICE BATLAN

Women and Justice for the Poor: A History of Legal Aid, 1863 –1945 CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS 2015

Challenging our assumptions about the history of the legal

profession and the development of free legal aid, the book reveals

that 19th-century women’s organizations first offered legal assistance to poor women and that women lay lawyers provided such assistance. By the early 20th century, however, male lawyers founded their own legal aid societies, intentionally excluding women and

narrowing the services provided. These different models of legal aid produced conflicting understandings of expertise, the rule of law, and the meaning of justice for the poor.

CHRISTOPHER J. BUCCAFUSCO

Happiness and the Law

UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO PRESS 2014 WITH JOHN BRONSTEEN & JONATHAN S. MASUR

Drawing on new research in psychology and economics, the authors assess how the law affects people’s quality of life—and how it can

do so in a better way. This book proposes a comprehensive approach to assessing human welfare—well-being analysis—that is a valuable alternative to the strictly economically based cost-benefit analyses

currently dominating how we evaluate public policy. In addition, the book applies the insights of hedonic psychology to a variety of legal fields, including civil lawsuits, criminal law and administrative law.

SUNGJOON CHO

The Social Foundations of World Trade: Norms, Community, and Constitution CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS 2015

Based on an enlightened reassessment of the contemporary trade

environment, this book by Professor Cho critiques the conventional contract model of the World Trade Organization and proposes the

notion of “community” as an alternative paradigm. Reconstructing the WTO as a community provides a prescriptive response to the WTO’s structural limitations and the resulting Doha crisis.

HOWARD C. EGLIT

Age, Old Age, Language, Law: A Dysfunctional— Often Harmful—Mix and How to Fix It LULU 2014

Professor Eglit focuses on the uses and misuses of language as a

mechanism for creating and nurturing ageism, contrasting the use

of negative epithets to describe elderly people with the absence of

comparable negative terms regarding the middle-aged and the young.

He also discusses ways in which the media degrade and demean older people. Professor Eglit proposes various solutions, including more

education, self-regulation by the media, and public rejection of ageist language as a start.

DAVID J. GERBER

Global Competition: Law, Markets, and Globalization OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS 2010, PAPERBACK 2012

Global competition now shapes economies and societies in ways

unimaginable only a few years ago, and competition (or “antitrust)

law is a key component of the legal framework for global competition. Professor Gerber examines competition laws around the world and reveals their often complex and little-understood relationships. The book focuses on the interactions between national and

international competition law systems and the ways in which they influence the dynamics of each system.

EDWARD LEE

The Fight for the Future: How People Defeated Hollywood and Saved the Internet—For Now LULU 2013

Wikipedia went dark on January 18, 2012. So did thousands of other

websites, including Google, to protest a copyright bill called the Stop Online Piracy Act. The protest helped ignite mass demonstrations on the streets

of over 250 cities in all 27 countries of the European Union to stop a similar attempt to regulate the Internet under the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade

Agreement. Professor Lee provides a gripping, behind-the-scenes look at the largest Internet protest in history, which demonstrated the power of people to shape and protect Internet freedoms.

CÉSAR F. ROSADO MARZÁN

El Principio de Protección del Trabajador en el Derecho Norteamericano [The Protective Principle in U.S. Work Law] THOMSON REUTERS–CHILE 2014 WITH SERGIO GAMONAL CONTRERAS

The American judiciary has eroded work law. In this light, the rebirth of work law in South America after years of authoritarian rule may

provide valuable lessons for the United States. In this legal essay, the authors describe the rebirth of the so-called Latin American

principles of work law. They draw on those principles to reinterpret U.S. work law and engage in a discussion on how to rebuild American work law.

RICHARD WARNER

Unauthorized Access: The Crisis in Online Privacy and Security CRC PRESS 2013, WITH ROBERT H. SLOAN

Bridging the gap among lawyers, computer scientists, economists

and public policy makers, this book provides, in plain English, technically

and legally sound public policy guidance about online privacy and security. Professor Warner and his co-author, Professor Robert H. Sloan (Computer Science, University of Illinois at Chicago), explore the well-established connection between social norms, privacy, security and technological

structure and emphasize the need to make trade-offs among the complex concerns that arise in the context of online privacy and security.

CÉSAR ROSADO MARZÁN & MERON KEBEDE EDS., LEXIS 2014

As the modern business world becomes increasingly decentralized and globally focused, traditional interpretations and applications of trademark protection law are facing greater and greater challenges. This is particularly true regarding the principle of trademark territoriality, which holds that trademark rights are bound by the laws of individual nations. This timely volume offers expert analyses of the challenges facing crucial aspects of trademark law from some of the most prominent scholars in the field.

This collection, edited by Professor Rosado Marzán and Chicago-Kent student Meron Kebede ’15, includes insight and analysis from top government officials, academics and leading attorneys in the fields of labor and employment law who participated and presented papers and essays at NYU Law School’s 2013 Conference on Labor. The conference’s leading theme was the regulation of compensation 75 years after Congress passed the landmark federal minimum wage law, the Fair Labor Standards Act (“FLSA”).

Twenty-five jury scholars from around the world presented papers at this two-day conference. The papers, selected and edited by Professors Marder and Valerie P. Hans, will appear in a special issue of the Oñati Socio-Legal Series.

RICHARD W. WRIGHT

Medical Malpractice and Compensation in Global Perspective RICHARD WRIGHT & KEN OLIPHANT EDS., DE GRUYTER 2013

Medical malpractice and compensation for medical injuries are issues that regularly create tension and innovation in national legal systems, but the analysis of these areas is often limited to national audiences. This study examines the issues in a uniquely global context, demonstrating the breadth of approaches currently taken around the world and revealing key areas of tension and the likely direction of future developments.
