For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven This week, I and my family are off to our cabin on North Long Lake in Merrifield, Minnesota. We will spend time with family, bike, fish, and play cards. I will also be collecting stories. Over the course of the year some of these stories will work their way into sermons. Sermons are made of stories and life is full of stories. When we come back from vacation, I will plan worship for the coming year. Although I cannot plan every detail, I will take several days to study the lectionary (that list of texts many pastors often follow). I will match some texts with books I’m interested in reading. (I am especially interested in a book by John Dominic Crossan about violence in the Old and New Testaments). In August, I will present a general plan to the program staff. Others of our staff are also taking Sabbath time away as well as planning and preparing for the coming year. Here are a few things your staff will be working on: Julie Evans, Director of Music, is going through the music library and searching out anthems appropriate for the lectionary readings of the coming year. She is finalizing a calendar of all the music groups that will be leading worship. In July, Julie will attend an American Guild of Organist Convention to take choral workshops and organ master classes. All summer Julie will be breaking

personal records in speed and hill climbing on her morning bike rides. In addition to keeping up with Facebook posts about summer happenings, Chelsea Tufarolo, Communications Coordinator, is taking a hard look at the church’s website. She will be cleaning up and editing, as well as making the site more user friendly. Sarah Riley, Business Manager, says it will be business as usual. Her job never really slows down very much. As long as people get their pledges in! Joann Moorer, Assistant Director of Music, is looking at music for the bell choir and for all of the children’s choirs. She is also looking at church musicals. What will Miss Joann find? In recent years we have been in the belly of the whale with Jonah, and in the lion’s den with Daniel. Where will our children take us this coming year? Orlando Restrepo, Head Custodian, is leading his team to do some general fix up around the church and to do a deep cleaning of 17 classrooms. They will remove all the furniture, shampoo the carpets, strip, and wax all the floors. Any repairs to the rooms, tables, or chairs will be made so that all is ready when the children return to the Weekday Nursery School and the After School Program.

Summer Church School Plans at CCPC Summer schedules bring opportunities for new patterns of life together, and this is part of our Sunday morning life together as well! As we worship as one church family at 10:00 a.m. throughout the summer, we will welcome children (completed Grade 3 and up) to remain in the sanctuary following the Time with Children to experience the rhythm and wonder of worship. In July and August, younger children (Age 3 through completed Grade 2) are invited (but not required) to go to special church school classes for the rest of the hour. Ages 3-5 will meet in Room 180, Kindergarteners through Grade 2 (completed) will meet in Room 170 on the first floor in the Education Building. Childcare for infants is available in Rooms 106/108. SPECIAL NOTE: We still need teachers in order to offer all of our classes this summer. Please look for the chart during coffee time and sign up to teach one of our children’s classes. It’s a wonderful way to get to know some of the youngest members of our church family! FOR ADULTS: Faith Trek is a small group of CCPC adults who are curious about their faith and the world and who want to explore in the company of a circle of friends. The circle expands easily, and we would be delighted to have you join us. This summer the group is reading Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy by Eric Metaxas. All adults are invited to join the discussions in the Conference (on the second floor of the center building, alley side at the end of the hall) from 11:00 - 12:00 noon each Sunday (when 3 folks are available for class, excluding July 5th and September 6th when there is no class.) Check with Margaret Chan (301-656-5034) if you have any questions.

Still Searching for Sunday School Teachers!! Summer Sunday School began on May 31st and continues through Homecoming Sunday, September 13th during the 10:00 a.m. worship service. Two classes for young children through second grade (completed) will be available, but only with your help. Teams of teachers are needed for each age group and a simple curriculum is provided to facilitate your teaching. Please check your calendar and see which Sunday you might be able to help! Signup sheets will be posted in Chadsey Hall during refreshments for your convenience. You may also contact Kristen Riley (202-237-8336 or kriley8@msn.com) or Lynn Jostes at the church (202-363-2202 x 22 or lynn@chevychasepc.org) for more information or to sign up for this special opportunity to teach our youngest children. Thanks for your help!

Pastor Molly’s Letter from page 1 Along with many other tasks, Lynn Jostes, Associate Pastor for Christian Nurture, is getting ready to introduce a new church school curriculum. Feasting on the Word was chosen by the Christian Education Committee and Pastor Lynn will make sure that all the teachers and classrooms have all the materials they need to teach our children in the fall. Cindy Walsh, Weekday Nursery School Director, is busy running summer camp. Each of the remaining five weeks has a different theme, including: Red, White, and Blue; Camping; Summer Science; Creepy Crawlers; and Pirates/Drama. Tempe Thomas, After School Program Director, will begin gearing up again mid-August in preparation for the next school year. Aimee Ranaivoarijaona, Executive Administrator, will be researching a new copy machine. We pray the old one lasts until a new one is found. Aimee will also be reorganizing the front office. And Aimee is getting ready for one of the most exciting events of the summer – the arrival of our new Associate Pastor Eric Peltz on August 17th. It’s a busy summer here at CCPC. We hope to accomplish many things, but I suppose the best thing we can accomplish is to nurture our spirits and renew our souls. In the midst of all the cleaning, organizing, planning and preparing, please pray for your staff that God’s Spirit may fill rest upon each one of us, give us rest, and fill us with life anew. God’s Blessings,

Riding the Bus as TAP Clients Do By Rebecca K. Kahlenberg, TAP Social Services Worker

From the church parking lot you can drive to the Delaware Memorial Bridge or even the New Jersey Turnpike in about 2 hours. It will take about the same amount of time to get to Southeast DC via Metro bus! I took a ride on the bus recently, together with TAP volunteer Cheryl Fisher. We wanted to experience the ride as our clients do, so as to better understand the large effort that it takes for them to reach us. For many TAP clients, the church is about as far away from their apartment or shelter or halfway house as it could be while still being in DC. They need to take two or three buses, or a combination of buses and Metro trains, often followed by a walk from the Friendship Heights station. They come to us in all kinds of weather, even when they don’t have proper winter gear, and even when they have disabilities that make it difficult for them to travel. The day that Cheryl and I planned to go on the bus turned out to be a beautiful spring day. But our auspicious start was slightly marred by the fact that we missed the first bus by about two minutes. About 25 minutes later, another bus arrived, and we boarded the L2 heading towards Farragut Square. The ride was smooth but long – about 45 minutes! In the process we asked several questions and learned about how the SmarTrip card works. Total time each way (including wait time) was over an hour, and this was just staying in the Northwest quadrant of DC! Had we gone to another quadrant it could have easily added 30-60 additional minutes of travel time, or more! I realized that it can be a big undertaking for our clients to get to TAP, and felt bad that we often have to turn people away because we exceed the 15 client per day limit. But I became more determined to treat the clients with respect and warmth once they arrive, as they often not only tell us their requests but also their hopes and their stories. I know from hearing those that they are doing their best to improve their lives – and that our small role in their journey can make a four hour round-trip bus ride seem very worthwhile.
