oastal homeowners know the importance of building with products that can stand up to the sometimes unforgiving weather conditions that come with having a home near the shoreline: extreme humidity, salty sea air, and— unfortunately—the occasional large storm system. When one Lowcountry couple decided to build a beautiful custom home on Sullivan's Island, they knew from the onset they would use the strongest materials best-suited to stand up to the elements in the construction of their 7,000 square foot ocean town abode. To source those materials, builder Chip Naramore with RS Custom Homes turned to longtime local com-

pany Southern Lumber and Millwork. In addition to an elaborate trim package, Chip enlisted Southern Lumber and Millwork's Joey Bohlander to provide hurricane impact rated doors and windows for the entire home—a must-have on the homeowner's building wish list. Ultimately, Chip and Joey agreed on Marvin brand doors and windows with impact glass. "We looked at samples of the various brands, and the Marvin windows are finished up very nicely on the inside, and they give a much cleaner finished look than some of the other brands," explains Chip. "The homeowner liked that look, and wanted that.

One of the great things about Marvin is that it offers a lot of detail and a lot of options in terms of the style of window." When deciding to go with impact-rated windows as opposed to other means of hurricane protection, Chip took several factors into consideration. Impact glass is, by design, much stronger than a typical window; it can withstand the impact of large objects striking the glass, and it will crack, but the object won't penetrate the
