WHAT’S A MOC? THE ANSWER

THE EVOLUTION OF THE MASCOT

For more than a decade, this question has puzzled many fans and observers of Chattanooga Athletics.

2014 MOCS VOLLEYBALL

The UTC Athletics Department changed logos in 1997, moving away from Native American imagery to a package of logos using railroad images, the nickname “Mocs,” and the Scrappy mascot. The new package emphasized UTC’s connection to Chattanooga and the city’s railroad heritage and incorporated the Tennessee state bird. The term “Moc” is short for “Mockingbird.” Mockingbirds are fiercely territorial creatures which protect their homes with courage, determination and skill. Those attributes reflect the intellect, spirit and character of UTC student-athletes and alumni. A Moc is a champion on the playing surface, in the classroom and, most importantly, in life.

SCRAPPY

Introduced in 2008, the new-look Scrappy has a sharper and more modern feel, mirroring the growth and image of UTC Athletics.

Named after legendary football coach A.C. “Scrappy” Moore, Scrappy, the Chattanooga mascot, is a fixture for the Mocs. A re-design in 2008 puts Scrappy in the image of the State Bird of Tennessee, a mockingbird. The mockingbird is known as a fierce protector of its nest and environment. It is sometimes seen swooping down on a dog, cat or predator that may be venturing too close to the bird’s protected territory. Once described by “Late Night” host Jimmy Fallon as “a sledge-hammer wielding mockingbird with a heart of Blue & Gold,” Scrappy symbolizes that competitive passion.

WHY MOCS?

Faced with politically sensitive issues and in need of a stronger core identity to help establish a strong brand as Chattanooga’s Team, the athletics department embarked on a comprehensive identity program in 1996. A new direction for the athletics identity was determined, moving away from the politically incorrect Native American Indian imagery. Several identities have been used in the past. With the old nickname “Moccasins,” a snake was used in the 1920s and an Indian was used until the year of major change in 1996. A moccasin shoe was even used in the 1980s. In 1996, it was decided to adopt the State Bird of Tennessee, the Mockingbird, as the core of the new identity, while incorporating the strong regional imagery of Chattanooga’s vast railroad history. The mascot “Scrappy” was born and a new emphasis was placed on the athletics department’s role in the region.

The “Power C” logo is the primary mark of Chattanooga Mocs Athletics.

The committee also recognized the need for the word “Chattanooga” to have a great emphasis in the logo. The nickname “Moccasins” was shortened to simply “Mocs.” Thus established, Chattanooga could rebuild its athletics programs and initiatives around this new identity. And rebuild it did. Quickly establishing the identity program in February 1997, combined with tremendous success in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, UTC had positioned itself to reach for the next level. From 1997 to 2007, the primary logo was the mascot, Scrappy, riding a train. The secondary logo features the front of a train with the word Mocs built into the logo. This logo is affectionately called the “Cowcatcher logo,” referring to the front lower grill of the train that helped push objects from the train tracks. In August 2007, officials at Chattanooga updated the school’s marks. A new C logo, the “Power C” as it has become known to fans and alums, was created as the primary mark and is emblazoned on the side of the football team’s helmets. The secondary marks were updated with a more modern look, and a new font, unique to the school, is now used on the text areas of the logos and marks. In September 2008, Scrappy was re-branded to better match the image of a mockingbird and reflect the rich tradition of our state, our city and our University. New marks of the head as well as a full body were released. The program has also been taking special efforts to stay true to its color palette—which includes navy blue and old gold.

SEASON PREVIEW OVERVIEW

A LOOK INTO THE 2014 SEASON

The Chattanooga Mocs go into the 2014 season with high hopes, looking to build from the learning experience that was 2013. Selected fifth in the Southern Conference preseason poll after finishing 10th in the previous standings, Head Coach Travis Filar and the team sees no other way to go but up. The Mocs return 11 letter winners, while losing just three during the off season. The team is lead by seniors Melissa Green and Brianna Guzinski. UTC returns six starters as a junior, two sophomores and two freshmen consistently graced the regular rotation.

“I think that’s one of the most exciting things about this team is that we have depth,” Filar said. “We have depth at every position for the first time. We’ve had competition for position, and our kids have seen that as healthy competition. We can have a six-on-six scrimmage and it’s hard to tell which is maybe the starting six and which is maybe the second string because both sides are playing to their highest ability because they want that starting job.”

Chattanooga returns to the Scenic City Sept. 2 for its first match at Maclellan Gym for a Tuesday night match with Kennesaw State. The first of three mid-week matchups, UTC visits UAB Sept. 9 and Austin Peay Sept. 16. The Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga., Sept. 5-6 is next on Chattanooga’s calendar. The Mocs face off against Georgia, College of Charleston and Belmont before returning home to host back-to-back tournaments. The Chattanooga Classic is Sept. 12-13 and the Scenic City Showdown goes down Sept. 19-20. It marks the first time since 1987 that UTC has hosted two volleyball tournaments in the same season.

2014 MOCS VOLLEYBALL

Along with Green and Guzinski returning, juniors Julimar Alvarado, Sarah Batterton, Catherine Chason, Lauren Gainer, Callie Hildebrand and Briana Reid come back as the class carrying the bulk of the stats. The sophomore class claims familiar faces in Anne Bachmann and Allie Davenport, while also welcoming transfers Nicole Sumida and Kristy Wieser from Butler and Nebraska-Omaha, respectively. The freshman class adds Lauren Greenspoon, Maddie Marshall and Eden Murray. Redshirt freshman Emily Morrison returns after missing the 2013 season with an injury.

champion Tulsa. The Hurricanes were also 2013 C-USA Tournament semifinalists.

The Chattanooga Classic features six matches. Murray State, Mississippi Valley State and Wright State visit Maclellan Gym for the weekend and will each face the Mocs. Wright State gets its shot Sept. 12 at 6 p.m., while Sept. 13 has UTC taking on Mississippi Valley at 12:30 p.m., and Murray State at 7 p.m.

2014 SCHEDULE

Chattanooga’s schedule features 15 non-conference matches, two home tournaments and 16 Southern Conference matches.

The Scenic City Showdown totes six matches, as well, with Chattanooga scheduled for three. The Mocs take on Stetson at 6 p.m., Sept. 19 and wrap up the following day with South Carolina State and UT-Martin at 12:30 p.m., and 7 p.m., respectively.

“I think we’ve put together a challenging preseason schedule, we’ve added another home tournament and then we have two new programs entering the conference this season,” Filar said. “I believe this may be one of the most exciting and testing schedules we’ve had.”

The conference slate continues for two more weekends before the Mocs make their first trip to Macon, Ga., to face another new member of the SoCon – Mercer. UTC and the Bears square off just south of Atlanta on Oct. 11 at 4 p.m.

The Mocs open the season August 29 in Houston, Texas at the Houston Marriott Westchase Classic hosted by Houston Baptist. While in the Lone Star State, UTC takes on HBU, Northern Arizona and 2012 Conference USA

The Mocs wrap up the regular season at home Nov. 15 against Furman at 6 p.m., before visiting Greensboro, N.C., Nov. 22-24 for the Southern Conference Championships.

POSITION PREVIEW

2014 MOCS VOLLEYBALL

RIGHT SIDE HITTERS / MIDDLE BLOCKERS

The middle blockers and right side hitters are often trained in the same position by Filar’s staff, and this season’s squad may boast the best depth at the position Chattanooga has seen. With six battling for a spot on the floor, the coaching staff has been very impressed with their competition and determination. Returners Lauren Gainer and Sarah Batterton may prove to lead the pack for the Mocs. Batterton averaged 1.77 kills per set last year with 154 kills. She was also strong on defense with 40 total blocks. Gainer saw action in just 86 sets last year due to a lower back injury but is heralded as the best at the blocker position. Her offense has also improved since last fall as she has worked on her ability to hit from various angles.

OUTSIDE HITTERS

SETTERS

Another group of four studentathletes looking for a spot on the lineup card, sophomore Allie Davenport along with juniors Julimar Alvarado, Callie Hildebrand and Briana Reid all return from the previous year.

For the first time in his tenure, Filar has two setters to choose from going into 2014 in sophomore Anne Bachmann and freshman Lauren Greenspoon. Both Bachmann and Greenspoon are very talented setters and it will be a toss-up as to who sees the most playing time.

Reid led the Mocs with 265 kills in 2013, and is the top candidate for the starting spot. Showing versatility with 396 digs last season as well, she is a solid six-rotation player who is very steady in both the front and back court. She is the model defender for the other outside hitters.

Davenport stands second in line after registering 238 kills. A sophomore with a strong arm, she has the ability to hit every angle and shot on the court. A lot is expected of her as coaches are looking for the youngest outside to settle down and compete Redshirt freshman Emily Morrison all five sets. returns to the team after undergoing shoulder surgery last year. Bachmann lead UTC with 611 assists last season, averaging 5.55 assists per set. Coming off a great spring camp and a fall season of being thrown into the fire at the collegiate level, Bachmann has taken great strides toward becoming a top-notch setter. Bachmann has the better chance to begin the season in the starting role becasue of her experience. She knows the Chattanooga offense by heart and runs the system very smoothly.

Seniors Melissa Green and Brianna Guzinski, junior Catherine Chason and freshman Maddie Marshall are all candidates going into the first weekend. Chason and Green are arguably the two favorites for the libero’s job. Both saw time wearing the alternate jersey in 2013 and both played in more than 100 sets each. Green posted 442 digs, while she collected 347.

Guzinski is making the transition from an outside hitter to defensive specialist/libero. Guzinski played 59 sets last season. With two spring camps and one year with the Mocs on her resume, there is a good chance the senior plays a major role Greenspoon comes to UTC after in Chattanooga’s defense. competing at a high level at both the high school and club volleyball Marshall enters her first collegiate scene. Credited with having a high campaign with the Mocs and is volleyball IQ, Greenspoon does a coming along well. With assistant great job of surveying the court, coach Adam McLamb installing his thinking about set-ups and finds new passing system, Marshall is in a favorable matchups on the other great position to learn and transition side of the net. Also presents herself from high school to college under as an attacker as a lefty. McLamb’s coaching style.
