WHAT’S IN A NAME?
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Chattanooga Mocs are proper usage in first reference to the athletics program. Chattanooga is the appropriate short form with the abbreviation of UTC. “Chatt” is acceptable as a leaderboard moniker. There is no hyphenated form of the school name (i.e. UTChattanooga, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Tenn.-Chatt., UT Chattanooga, etc.). The nickname is simply Mocs. For more information and current athletic marks, turn to page 14.
MOCS IN PRO GOLF
There are currently two former Chattanooga Mocs in the world of professional golf. Former standouts and teammates Emma de Groot (2008-11) and Christine Wolf (2008-11) earned status on American and European tours in 2013. For the second straight year, de Groot played on the Symetra Tour, the road to the LPGA Tour, as well as the Australian Ladies Professional Golf Tour early in 2013. Wolf competed on the Ladies European Tour Access Series. She claimed her first professional win at the Crete Ladies Open on that tour in October 2012.

2013-14 CHATTANOOGA GOLF GUIDE PLAYER DEVELOPMENT COMPLEX The Player Development Complex affords Chattanooga Mocs golfers an elite practice area. It is a comprehensive facility to develop and continuously improve their games throughout their collegiate careers. There is a full range allowing for comprehensive practice, utilizing every club in the bag. There are numerous greens allowing a distance control mechanism as well as guidance poles to increase accuracy. Five close-range greens allow for a phenomenal wedge-game practice experience. New hitting mats were installed in 2013 as well as a Covershot to allow for practice rain or shine. There are two full-size greens available to the Mocs. With more than 16,000 square feet of space, drills and stations can be set up to maximize practice time and grow the game. Bunker areas around the practice greens offer superb practice opportunities. The complete pitching and chipping area covers all aspects of short-game preparation. It is an imaginative area where creativity can be applied to shots chosen and practiced. Fairway bunker work is available to allow the student-athlete the ability to work on every possible shot they may encounter. The facility also includes three practice holes (2 Par 3s, 1 Par 4) with various tees and yardages. Depending on utilization of tees, the holes can play as nine separate holes including a par 5 (560 yards). These holes build course management shot selection skills, while applying aspects from the various practice areas to the golf course.

The Chattanooga Mocs have an excellent Student Support Services department in place for all student-athletes. UTC provides this unit and has four full-time staff members to ensure premier service to its student-athletes. The women’s golf program has a strong history of academic success. Seven Mocs have earned WGCA All-American Scholar honors. The program dots the Dean’s List and/or Athletic Director’s Honor Roll on a regular basis. It has also ranked among the top 20 in the nation in GPA (2011, 2012) for DI squads. Through the use of advisors, tutors, study halls and many other programs, Student Support Services is on hand to help each student-athlete reach his or her ultimate goal of earning a college degree.

Located in a metropolitan area that includes more than 500,000 people, the Mocs are covered by the Chattanooga Times Free Press and the local contingent of television stations, including ABC, CBS and NBC affiliates, as well as three local sports talk programs and two online publications.

The Chattanooga Mocs Sports Medicine Program provides prevention, care, and rehabilitation services for all student-athletes. UTC has two athletic training rooms that serve all athletic teams. Thanks to funding from Erlanger Hospital, the athletic training rooms are equipped with the most up-to-date rehabilitation equipment including a Biodex Isokinetic Unit, a Neurocom for balance testing and training, and a Trazer unit for functional rehabilitation. In addition, the Chattanooga Group, Inc., provides therapeutic modalities for use as both rehabilitation equipment and instructional devices for students enrolled in the Graduate Athletic Training Program. The Graduate Athletic Training Program at UTC plays a major role in providing certified athletic trainers to insure that student-athletes are well taken care of. The entry-level masters program is one of few programs in the country that allows students to earn a master’s degree while they gain eligibility to sit for the Board of Certification Exam. Members of the athletics department and the graduate program staff the athletic training rooms. They work together to insure quality health care for all Mocs student-athletes and quality academic instruction for athletic training students in the graduate program.

The recently completed $3.2 million Brenda Lawson Student-Athlete Success Center is one of the finest facilities of its kind in college athletics. The Lawson Center, located on Vine Street in the heart of campus, houses the Chattem Basketball Practice Facility and the Wolford Family Strength and Conditioning Facility. Also located in the Center are meeting and film rooms that are available for all Mocs’ athletic programs to use. Director of Athletic Performance Scott Brincks and his staff use the facility to increase the Mocs golf team’s overall strength and conditioning level. Through rigorous offseason workouts, and programs to maintain peak performance during the season, the Lawson Center and Wolford Family Strength and Conditioning Facility will impact the Mocs’ performance on the course for years to come. The Athletic Performance staff monitor all phases of strength and conditioning for the Mocs. The covers the obvious in weight-lifting, running and aerobic activity and core development. It is also evident in the overall wellness and fitness of the student-athlete. This includes all areas of health, nutrition and physical fitness. Director of Athletic Performance Scott Brincks provides expertise in all areas of nutrition, health and physical fitness for UTC student-athletes.

Over the last seven years, UTC has won 19 regular season and 26 tournament championships in the Southern Conference, far more than any other school during that time. After finishing in the top-100 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup in 2009, the Mocs had their thirdbest showing at No. 136 in 2011. Here is a brief list of some of UTC’s major accomplishments in 2012-13: • Four SoCon Team Championships • Six Teams Represented in the Postseason • Three All-Americans • One Academic All-American • Two Southern Conference Athletes of the Year • Two Southern Conference Freshmen of the Year • Three Southern Conference Coaches of the Year • Five SoCon Individual Champions • 40 All-SoCon Performers

Z. Mason was an All-SoCon performer for the men’s basketball team, Agathe Sauzon won the 2013 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Cham Chamleading the Mocs in scoring at 14.9 ppg. pionship, leading UTC to its fourth-straight team title.

The Mocs’ student-athletes continue to have tremendous success in the classroom. Below are just a few of the Academic accolades UTC received last year: • Over half of all UTC student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 grade-point-average in each of the last eight semesters. • The Mocs tied a school record with 11 squads posting a 3.0 team g.p.a. in both the fall and spring semesters. • Men’s cross country had a school record 3.84 g.p.a. in the spring and the No. 2 g.p.a. in the nation last season. • UTC has had at least a 2.9 cumulative student-athlete g.p.a. for six consecutive semesters.

SOCIALLY
The Chattanooga Mocs Athletics Department is heavily involved in community events throughout the year. UTC student-athletes, coaches & staff logged over 1,800 hours volunteering in the community over the last year at events such as Freshman Move-In, Bloodanooga, Clean & Green and Read Across America. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) plans many of the Athletic Department’s community events. The Mocs have a presence at Chattanooga’s Special Olympics events each year. UTC student-athletes also host many events that engage the local community, such as the 2012 Southern Scuffle.

2013-14 CHATTANOOGA GOLF GUIDE WHAT’S A MOC? THE ANSWER
WHY MOCS?
For more than a decade, this question has puzzled many fans and observers of Chattanooga Athletics. The UTC Athletics Department changed logos in 1997, moving away from Native American imagery to a package of logos using railroad images, the nickname “Mocs” and the Scrappy mascot. The new package emphasized UTC’s connection to Chattanooga and the city’s railroad heritage and incorporated the Tennessee state bird. The term “Moc” is short for “Mockingbird.” Mockingbirds are fiercely territorial creatures which protect their homes with courage, determination and skill. Those attributes reflect the intellect, spirit and character of UTC student-athletes and alumni. A Moc is a champion on the playing surface, in the classroom and, most importantly, in life.
Faced with politically sensitive issues and in need of a stronger core identity to help establish a strong brand as Chattanooga’s Team, the athletics department embarked on a comprehensive identity program in 1996. A new direction for the athletics identity was determined, moving away from the politically incorrect Native American Indian imagery. Several identities have been used in the past. With the old nickname “Moccasins,” a snake was used in the 1920s and an Indian was used until the year of major change in 1996. A moccasin shoe was even used in the 1980s. In 1996, it was decided to adopt the State Bird of Tennessee, the Mockingbird, as the core of the new identity, while incorporating the strong regional imagery of Chattanooga’s vast railroad history. The mascot “Scrappy” was born and a new emphasis was placed on the athletics department’s role in the region. The committee also recognized the need for the word “Chattanooga” to have a great emphasis in the logo. The nickname “Moccasins” was shortened to simply “Mocs”. Thus established, Chattanooga could rebuild its athletics programs and initiatives around this new identity. And rebuild it did. Quickly establishing the identity program in February 1997, combined with tremendous success in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, UTC had positioned itself to reach for the next level. From 1997 to 2007, the primary logo was the mascot, Scrappy, riding a train. The secondary logo features the front of a train with the word Mocs built into the logo. This logo is affectionately called the “Cowcatcher logo,” referring to the front lower grill of the train that helped push objects from the train tracks. In August 2007, officials at Chattanooga updated the school’s marks. A new C logo, the “Power C” as it has become known to fans and alums, was created as the primary mark and is emblazoned on the side of the football team’s helmets. The secondary marks were updated with a more modern look, and a new font, unique to the school, is now used on the text areas of the logos and marks. In September 2008, Scrappy was re-branded to better match the image of a mockingbird and reflect the rich tradition of our state, our city and our University. New marks of the head as well as a full body were released. The program has also been taking special efforts to stay true to its color palette—which includes navy blue and old gold.
SCRAPPY Named after legendary football coach A.C. “Scrappy” Moore, Scrappy, the Chattanooga mascot, is a fixture for the Mocs. A re-design in 2008 puts Scrappy in the image of the State Bird of Tennessee, the Mockingbird. The mockingbird is known as a fierce protector of its nest and environment. It is sometimes seen swooping down on a dog, cat or predator that may be venturing too close to the bird’s protected territory. Once described by “Late Night” host Jimmy Fallon as “a sledge-hammer wielding mockingbird with a heart of Blue & Gold,” Scrappy symbolizes that competitive passion.
The “Power C” is the primary mark of the Chattanooga athletics department. It can be used alone or with “CHATTANOOGA MOCS” in the school’s custom-made font below the C.

Colette Murray was named head coach of the Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf program on January 19, 2006. Her charge was to restart a program that had been dormant at UTC for a couple of decades. She wasted little time in making her mark. In six seasons, Colette’s charges have won four Southern Conference Championships among 14 total team titles. In fact, the Mocs won four times in that first campaign (2007-08). Murray’s squads have captured at least one team win in each of her six campaigns. Chattanooga has reached NCAA postseason play in ALL six years since Murray returned the Mocs to the tee. The inaugural season saw Emma de Groot (2008-11) qualify individually for the 2008 NCAA East Regional. Since then, the team has made five appearances in a row. The first included a major splash. Murray’s Mocs entered the NCAA East Regional on the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio and finished eighth to advance to the NCAA Championship. A tireless worker, her passion and dedication to the game is easy to see. Her commitment to building an elite program based on the department’s mission to establish comprehensive excellence – academically, athletically and socially – as the UTC standard is quite evident as well. Through the 2013 season, Murray’s Mocs have won four straight SoCon Championships and boast the last three medalists. Agathe Sauzon (2013) kept the string alive winning with a birdie on the first playoff hole following in the footsteps of de Groot (2011) and Jordan Britt (2012).
de Groot and Wolf set virtually every school record. Emma won six times with a program-best 74.54 stroke average. Wolf holds records for best 18 (66, 2011 JMU Eagle Landing Invite), 36 (141, 2011 JMU Eagle Landing Invite) and 54-hole (209, 2011 JMU Eagle Landing Invite) totals.
She is a three-time SoCon Coach of the Year (2010, 2011, 2013) and boasts the 2011 SoCon Golfer of the Year in de Groot. She’s had three SoCon Freshmen of the Year – de Groot (2008), Maria Salinas (2009) and Emily McLennan (2013) – along with 13 all-league performers and an NCAA All-Regional Tourney finisher (Maria Juliana Loza in 2011).
Her teams have twice finished among the top 40 in the nation on the course. After ending up No. 39 in 2010, Chattanooga came in at No. 31 to end the 2011 campaign. The squad just missed is that special 2009 year still posting a top 50 at No. 44.
Christine Wolf (2008-11) and de Groot moved on to the pro ranks upon graduation. Wolf earned partial status for 2013 on the European Ladies Tour and her full card on the LET Access Tour. de Groot is in her second year on the Symetra Tour after finishing second in the Club Car Series on the Australian Professional Ladies Tour in the first months of 2013.
The athletic side is not the only source of excellence. She has seen her team flourish as a unit along with several individual accolades. Loza graduated from Chattanooga in the May 2013 with a near 4.0 grade point average to move on the prestigious Stanford School of Engineering for her Master’s program. She is one of seven WGCA Scholar AllAmericans (Britt, Mette Kryger, Yushira Budhram, Marion Duvernay, Isabella Loza and Emily McLennan) in the program’s brief history. Murray’s Mocs have posted a 3.5 or better grade point average six times with a high of 3.721 in the spring of 2012. The 2011 squad ranked No. 13 in the nation among NCAA Division I women’s golf programs with a 3.649 cumulative g.p.a. That was followed by a No. 10 finish in 2012 (3.621) with every student-athlete earning Dean’s List honors as three – Maju Loza, Britt and Kryger earning 4.0 g.p.a.’s in at least one semester. Murray and her teams are active in their community in a variety of ways. While not vocal in their actions, the Mocs have been spotted chipping in with different charitable acts. One of Murray’s favorite endeavors is the Player Development Complex. The Mocs’ practice home is shared with the First Tee of Chattanooga. Instead of just utilizing the facility, Murray and her student-athletes have taken work days at the facility which has a two-fold effect.

One, the team learns all that goes into making their practice home functional. Secondly, it gives them a better appreciation for what others do to make it an elite game-building experience. In May 2011, Murray received special recognition for her impact on the lives of young people. The Boys and Girls Club of Cleveland honored her with the Empowering Women Global Award. She’s a 2004 graduate of Jacksonville State University with a degree in General Studies with a concentration in Psychology. She was a four-year letterwinner earning seven top-10 individual finishes and 15 top-20’s. Overall, Murray and her teammates claimed 10 team titles. She gained her first taste of coaching experience working as an assistant to JSU Head Coach James Hobbs, a longtime, successful collegiate head coach. In 2005, Murray helped guide the Gamecocks women’s team to the Ohio Valley Conference Championship and the program’s first-ever trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament. JSU placed 20th at the NCAA East Regional.

2013-14 CHATTANOOGA GOLF GUIDE UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION Dr. Steve Angle assumed his role as Chancellor and the 17th leader of The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on July 1, 2013. Prior to coming to UTC, Angle served as Senior Vice President at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and Executive in Residence at the Ohio Board of Regents (2012-2013). Prior to this appointment, he was the University Provost and a Professor of Chemistry (20072012). He earned a B.A. degree in Chemistry from the University of California, Irvine (1978) and a M.S. degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles (1981), before returning to UC-Irvine for his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry (1984).

While at Wright State, Angle oversaw an increase of research and sponsored program awards from $64 million in 2006 to over $100 million in 2012, all while state funding was reduced. At the Ohio Board of Regents, Angle helped lead the development of “Complete College Ohio,� a plan in conjunction with adult career centers, community colleges, and universities across Ohio to raise graduation rates and provide well-qualified workers for the state. Before his tenure at Wright State, Angle served as Dean of the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences and Director of the Agricultural and Natural Resources Program at the University of California, Riverside (2001-2007). While at UC Riverside, he also served as interim Dean and Director (2000-2001), Associate Dean for Physical and Mathematical Sciences at the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (1997-2000), and a faculty member in chemistry (1986-2007).Angle served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1984-1986). Angle has had numerous research publications featured in periodicals such as Journal of Organic Chemistry, Tetrahedron Letters, and Journal of the American Chemical Society. He has also made 142 research presentations across the country. During his time as a professor, Angle was the major professor to 21 Ph.D. students, advisor and mentor to nine post-doctoral scholars, and was also mentor to 25 students who carried out research in the Angle Laboratory. He is married to Dr. Dominique Belanger, and is the father of three: Brad, Ian, and Zoe.

2013-14 CHATTANOOGA GOLF GUIDE ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATION University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Interim Chancellor Dr. Grady Bogue and Chancellor-elect Dr. Steven Angle announced David Blackburn as the institution’s new Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics on April 20, 2013. Blackburn most recently served as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Administration at the University of Tennessee where he was member of the Volunteers’ executive staff. Blackburn jumped right into his new role, making two high-profile hires in less than a month on the job. On May 10, 2013, he announced Hall of Famer Jim Foster as the new coach of the Lady Mocs basketball program. Four days later, he introduced Will Wade as the new men’s basketball coach at UTC.

Both hires were met with enthusiasm and excitement in the Scenic City and quickly showed that Blackburn’s skills and experience give him the ability to find the right fit for the Mocs. He has certainly impressed the Chattanooga faithful heading into his first season leading the Mocs. A 1990 graduate of the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science in Education, Blackburn has over two decades
of experience in college athletics. He began his career at Tennessee in 1993 working with then-head football coach Phillip Fulmer, serving in a variety of roles within the program. He held his most recent position since 2008 as direct oversight of Vols football and its senior-level administrator. At Tennessee, Blackburn served as the athletic department liaison to the Thornton Center, the student-athlete academic support unit. He was appointed to participate in various search committees for head coaches and upper level departmental staff. He also participated in the design and construction of Tennessee’s new $48 million football training center. In August of 2003, Blackburn made a transition into fundraising and became the Assistant Athletic Director for Development. During his tenure working in fundraising, the Volunteer Athletic Scholarship Fund saw record growths in all areas. Most noted were total athletic gifts more than doubling from $19.5 million in 2003 to over $41 million in 2007. Also, he helped secure an $84 million multi-media rights contract with Host Communications. In 2007, Blackburn was promoted to Associate Athletic Director for Administration where he broadened his scope of athletic department management serving on then-Athletic Director Mike Hamilton’s senior management team. That appointment included oversight of the track and field program, the swimming and diving teams, facility operations, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, equipment operations, and event management. A native of Loudon, Tenn., Blackburn is married to the former Andrea Radel of Albion, Mich. They have two daughters, Emma and Charlee.

ACADEMICALLY • The Mocs tied a program record with 11 teams scoring a 3.0 g.p.a. in both the fall and spring semesters in the 2012-13 academic year. • 57 student-athletes earned degrees in 2012-13.

• Six teams - women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, wrestling and men’s and women’s golf competed in postseason play. • Individually, the Mocs had three All-Americans, two SoCon Athletes of the Year, one SoCon Tournament MVP, five SoCon Champions, two SoCon Freshmen of the Year and three SoCon Coaches of the Year. Chattanooga also brought home 40 All-SoCon honors, while 23 student-athletes made various SoCon All-Freshmen teams. Men’s golfer Steven Fox won the U.S. Amateur in August of 2012.

• The Mocs volunteered at numerous community events throughout the year, including National Volunteer Week, Special Olympics, FMSC MobilePack, Read Across America and many more. • The Mocs looked to expand their presence in the surrounding areas with Caravan trips to Birmingham, Atlanta and Nashville. Not to forget their closest fans, the student-athletes again took part in Operation Move-In, helping freshmen unload into their dorms to begin the fall semester. • Being engaged in the community can extend past volunteering. The Mocs created a stir with a number of creative marketing ideas, including the April Fools joke that brought back the ‘Shoe’ mascot, the introduction of the mobile ticket van, the ‘Pac the Mac’ promotion that sold out the wrestling match vs. Iowa and the annual ‘30 Minutes or Less’ promotion for football.

New Members in 2014-15: East Tennessee State, Mercer & VMI The Southern Conference, which begins its 92nd season of intercollegiate competition in 2011, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The SoCon is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Academic excellence has been a major part of the SoCon’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The SoCon has sent three schools to regionals in three of the last six years with the Mocs leading the charge in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and with multiple individual berths including Emma de Groot in 2008. A SoCon school has qualified for the NCAA Championship four times since the turn of the century with the Mocs being the most recent entry in 2009. The Southern Conference office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a firstclass meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.
