tommy bartlett ITA Men’s Tennis Collegiate Hall of Fame

Alice Tym ITA Women’s tennis Hall of Fame Alice Tym blazed a trail as a pioneer in women’s collegiate tennis. She started the women’s tennis varsity program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga while serving as head coach from 1974-78. She was inducted into the ITA Women’s Tennis Hall of Fame

in 2008.

During her time at UTC, Tym won two AIAW Small College National Championships in 1977 and 1978.

Tym also started the women’s tennis program at the University of Florida while she was a student in 1960. She went on to earn an M.A. from UF in 1966 as a Ford Foundation Fellow.

From 1964 to 1970, she played on the international circuit, winning titles on five continents and securing a world ranking as high as No. 13 in 1969.

Appointed director of tennis at Yale in 1978, she coached the nationally ranked women’s team for four years and won the Ivy Championships in 1981.

Tym returned to UTC to take up a distinguished teaching career in the Geography Department, where she still teaches today, maintaining her involvement in athletics as an active horsewoman and gold medalist in the National Senior Olympics.

The Lady Mocs Also Won aiaw small college national championships in 1977 and 1979.

1983 NCAA Division II National Champions

Former UTC Head Coach Tommy Bartlett was inducted into the ITA Men’s Tennis Collegiate Hall of Fame in 1993.

He guided the Mocs tennis program from 1979 to 1990. The most noticeable accomplishments under Bartlett were the women’s three consecutive NCAA Division II National Championships from 1983-85.

The women’s team also won Southern Conference titles in 1984-86, 1988 and 1990.

Bartlett guided the men’s tennis squad to six-straight SoCon Championships from 1980-85, as well as league titles in 1988 and 1989.

Under Bartlett’s guidance, Sue McCulloch (1985), Scott Zaccaria and Orlando Lourenco all earned SoCon Player of the Year honors. Lori Massengill, Pam Yates, Sue McCulloch, Christine Picher and Heidi Narborough all earned AllAmerican honors while Bartlett was coaching UTC. Bartlett was named the National Coach of the Year in 1986 and the SoCon Women’s Coach of the Year in 1986 and 1990. On the men’s side, he earned SoCon Coach of the Honors seven times, including 198083, 1985 and 1988-89.

He was inducted into the UTC Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993.

The Chattanooga men’s and women’s tennis teams are fortunate to have three places to call home. On campus, the Mocs use the UTC Tennis Complex that houses seven newly remodeled courts and the DeSales-Harrison Racquet Center with two indoor courts.

In the early stages of the spring season when the weather is cold and unpredictable, Chattanooga moves its contests to the Hixson Racquet Court which features six courts and a viewing vantage point from the lobby. In the fall, the Mocs host the prestigious Steve Baras Fall Classic at the Champions Club Tennis Complex as well as several spring dual matches. The Club features 26 hard courts, a two-story, 6,000 sq. ft. clubhouse with lockers, rest rooms with showers and a pro shop. The facility - inside and outside - is ADA accessible. The Mocs also have access to the Manker Patten Tennis Club located next to the UTC campus in cases of bad weather.

Located in a metropolitan area that includes over 500,000 people, the Mocs are covered by the local contingent of television stations, including ABC, CBS and NBC. UTC Athletics also enjoys a tremendous amount of exposure through the print media. The Times Free Press is the main print news outlet in the area and provides excellent coverage of the Mocs. Countess Davis works with men’s tennis junior Ankit Chopra in the Mocs Athletics Training Room.

The training room in McKenzie Arena serves the Mocs’ student-athletes with state-of-the-art equipment.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Sports Medicine Program provides prevention, care and rehabilitation services for all student-athletes. UTC has two athletic training rooms that serve all athletic teams.

Thanks to funding from Erlanger Hospital, the athletic training rooms are equipped with the most up-to-date rehabilitation equipment including a Biodex isokinetic unit, a Neurocom for balance testing and training, and a Trazer unit for functional rehabilitation. In addition, the Chattanooga Group, Inc., provides therapeutic modalities for use as both rehabilitation equipment and instructional devices for students enrolled in the Graduate Athletic Training Program.

The Graduate Athletic Training Program at UTC plays a major role in providing certified athletic trainers to insure that student-athletes are well taken care of. The entry-level masters program is one of few programs in the country that allows students to earn a master’s degree while they gain eligibility to sit for the Board of Certification Exam. Members of the athletic department and the graduate program staff the athletic training rooms. They work together to insure quality health care for the student-athletes and quality academic instruction for athletic training students in the graduate program.

The $3.2 million Brenda Lawson Student Success Center opened in January 2009 and houses the Wolford Family Strength & Conditioning Center.

The newly completed $3.2 million Brenda Lawson Student-Athlete Success Center is one of the finest facilities of its kind in college athletics. The Center, located on Vine Street in the heart of campus, houses the Chattem Basketball Practice Facility and the Wolford Family Strength and Conditioning Facility. Also located in the Center are meeting and film rooms that are available for all Mocs’ athletic programs to use.

Director of Athletic Performance Scott Brincks and his staff use the facility to increase the Mocs tennis teams’ overall strength and conditioning level. Through rigorous offseason workouts, and programs to maintain peak performance during the season, the Lawson Center and Wolford Family Strength and Conditioning Facility will impact the Mocs’ performance on the court for years to come.

Located in McKenzie Arena, the Mocs’ computer lab gives student-athletes a convenient place to study, receive tutoring help and complete assignments.

The Chattanooga Mocs have an excellent Academic Support Service in place for all student-athletes. Through the use of advisors, tutors, study halls and many other programs, the Student Support Services is on hand to help each student-athlete reach his or her ultimate goal of earning a college degree.

Over the last five years, UTC has won 17 regular season and 19 tournament championships in the Southern Conference, far more than any other school during that time. After finishing in the top-100 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup in 2009, the Mocs had their third-best showing at No. 136 in 2011. Here is a brief list of some of UTC’s major accomplishments in 2010-11.

The Mocs’ student-athletes continue to have tremendous success in the classroom. Below are just a few of the Academic accolades UTC received last year: • Over half of all UTC student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 grade-point-average in each of the last two semesters.

• Wrestling had four student-athletes make the NWCA All-Academic team, tying for the most in the nation.

• The overall g.p.a. of the Mocs’ student-athletes has increased in each of the last five semesters.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) plans many of the Athletic Department’s community events. The Mocs also have a presence at Chattanooga’s Special Olympics events each year. The Mocs also host many events that engage the local community, such as the 2010 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships.

The Answer

For more than a decade, this question has puzzled many fans and observers of Chattanooga Athletics.

The UTC Athletics Department changed logos in 1997, moving away from Native American imagery to a package of logos using railroad images, the nickname “Mocs,” and the Scrappy mascot. The new package emphasized UTC’s connection to Chattanooga and the city’s railroad heritage and incorporated the Tennessee state bird.

Scrappy Named after legendary football coach A.C. “Scrappy” Moore, Scrappy, the Chattanooga mascot, is a fixture for the Mocs. A re-design in 2008 puts Scrappy in the image of the State Bird of Tennessee, a Mockingbird. The mockingbird is known as a fierce protector of its nest and environment. It is sometimes seen swooping down on a dog, cat or predator that may be venturing too close to the bird’s protected territory. Once described by “Late Night” host Jimmy Fallon as “a sledgehammer wielding mockingbird with a heart of Blue & Gold,” Scrappy symbolizes that competitive passion.

Why Mocs?

Faced with politically sensitive issues and in need of a stronger core identity to help establish a strong brand as Chattanooga’s Team, the athletics department embarked on a comprehensive identity program in 1996. A new direction for the athletics identity was determined, moving away from the politically incorrect Native American Indian imagery.

Several identities have been used in the past. With the old nickname “Moccasins,” a snake was used in the 1920s and an Indian was used until the year of major change in 1996. A moccasin shoe was even used in the 1980s.

In 1996, it was decided to adopt the State Bird of Tennessee, the Mockingbird, as the core of the new identity, while incorporating the strong regional imagery of Chattanooga’s vast railroad history. The mascot “Scrappy” was born and a new emphasis was placed on the athletics department’s role in the The “Power C” logo is the primary mark of Chattanooga Mocs Athletics. region.

The committee also recognized the need for the word “Chattanooga” to have a great emphasis in the logo. The nickname “Moccasins” was shortened to simply “Mocs.” Thus established, Chattanooga could rebuild its athletics programs and initiatives around this new identity.

And rebuild it did. Quickly establishing the identity program in February 1997, combined with tremendous success in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, UTC had positioned itself to reach for the next level.

From 1997 to 2007, the primary logo was the mascot, Scrappy, riding a train. The secondary logo features the front of a train with the word Mocs built into the logo. This logo is affectionately called the “Cowcatcher logo,” referring to the front lower grill of the train that helped push objects from the train tracks.

In August 2007, officials at Chattanooga updated the school’s marks. A new C logo, the “Power C” as it has become known to fans and alums, was created as the primary mark and is emblazoned on the side of the football team’s helmets. The secondary marks were updated with a more modern look, and a new font, unique to the school, is now used on the text areas of the logos and marks.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s and women’s tennis teams are geared up for an exciting season of collegiate tennis. The Mocs and Lady Mocs are looking to continue the momentum of big improvements on the court from the 2011 campaign. Both squads return the core of their lineups and both has talented experience to lead their teams in 2012.

The Mocs are trying to increase their win total for the third year in a row. Coming off an 8-16 season, Chattanooga posted its most wins since the 2008 season.

UTC returns five starters while adding three newcomers. Chattanooga has no seniors on the roster, but eight juniors, two sophomores and a freshman.

Leading the men is two-time All-Southern Conference performer Roberto Vieira (Bedfordview, South Africa). He went 12-12 at No. 1 last season, earning a spot on the league’s first team. Fellow junior Chris Smith (Johnson City, Tenn.) is set to return at No. 2 while classmates Stephen Crofford (Franklin, Tenn.), William Disterdick (Hixson, Tenn.) and Sam Parfitt (Norwich, England) will all battle for spots in the lineup.

Sophomores Orlando Lourenco (Hixson, Tenn.) and Jordan Faith (Denver, Colo.) will also be in the mix for time on the court. Newcomers include a pair of junior transfers in Manuel Barroetavena

(Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Ankit Chopra (Chandigrah, India). Barroetavena joins the Mocs from Cameron University on Oklahoma while Chopra transfers from Chicago State.

Freshman Pavels Grigorjevs (Riga, Latvia) is the other newcomer. All three are expected to work their way into the lineup.

The Lady Mocs went 11-11 last season, their best record since 2006. UTC also was 6-5 in SoCon action, moving up to fifth in the league. After going 3-7 in SoCon play in 2010, the Lady Mocs improved a full three games in league matches last season. That is the biggest jump for the program since posting a 2-5 mark in 1993 and following that with a 7-2 SoCon record in 1994.

Sophomore Alexa Flynn (Memphis, Tenn.) had a strong first year, earning a spot on the SoCon All-Freshman team.

She was 11-11 in dual matches and 1812 overall.

UTC returns two-time All-SoCon performer Jenna Nurik. A junior from Roswell, Ga., Nurik was 18-14 overall and 13-9 at No. 1 last season. She earned the SoCon Sportsmanship Award and was on the league’s second team. She also had a 20-9 mark in doubles play.

Freshman Kaylene Chadwell (Franklin, Tenn.) will push for a spot in the top of the lineup after a solid fall season. Fellow newcomer Claire Mulyadi (Semarang, Indonesia) joined the team at the semester break and will add depth to the roster.

Four seniors will also lead the team, including Charlotte Bossy (Koekelare, Belgium), Emily Hangstefer (Signal Mountain, Tenn.), Shaina Singh (Vancouver, B.C.) and Brianna Wishing (Murfreesboro, Tenn.). Singh led this group with a 17-14 singles re-

Expectations continue to grow for both the Mocs and Lady Mocs as the programs move forward. Together they have 18 SoCon championships, but are working for the first one since the 2000 season. As the talent on the court improves, both programs are trying to work their way back to that championship tradition.

carlos garcia men’s tennis head coach

One of the most respected and successful coaches in the Southeast region, Carlos Garcia is in his 11th year at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. During his career, Garcia has coached both the men’s and women’s teams at UTC, guided a conference Player of the Year winner, earned regional coaching honors from the ITA, worked with the U.S. Davis Cup Squad and had his team earn ITA Academic Team honors.

Garcia has produced five winning seasons during his tenure at UTC and has the Mocs geared for much improvement on the court in 2012. He has coached eight individuals and four doubles team to All-Southern Conference recognition and has the talent on the squad this year to add to that list.

He kept Mocs moving in the right direction with the 2010-11 campaign. The Mocs increased their win total for the third year in a row, posting an 8-16 overall mark. Fielding a young squad that included only one senior in the regular line up, UTC recorded its most wins since the 2008 season.

Garcia spent his first two seasons at UTC coaching both the men’s and women’s teams.

He has focused his efforts solely on the men’s program for the past seven-plus seasons and has had impressive results on and off the court.

Fabian Bechara and Charlotte Goude were Second-Team All-SoCon selections in 2003 as were the doubles teams of Ontog and Thomas Knizat and Oulevay and Catherine Allen. Ontog, the 2001 SoCon Men’s Player of the Year and No. 1 singles champion, received the Buddy Hartsell-Don Bunch Sportsmanship Award two times and achieved an Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranking as high as No. 67.

In the classroom, the 2001-02 men’s team earned ITA Team Academic honors, while James Dickerson and John Hangstefer were named ITA Scholar-Athletes. Gordon Ruddell and Sam Parfitt both earned ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition in 2010.

Garcia’s collegiate coaching career began in 1994 when he served as a men’s assistant at his alma mater, the University of Tennessee, until 1999. In 1999, Garcia moved on to the University of North Carolina to become the men’s assistant coach. The Tar Heels finished the season ranked 20th in the nation, and Garcia was named Regional Assistant Coach of the Year by the ITA in 1999 and 2000.

Garcia took his coaching talents to a new level when he left North Carolina in 2000 to become the personal coach to Davis Cup standout and former NCAA singles champion Chris Woodruff for two seasons. He also coached Woodruff, a former Tennessee player, to his second ATP singles title at the ATP Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, R.I. Woodruff also had a quarterfinal showing at the 2000 Australian Open under Garcia’s guidance.

He led the Mocs to the championship match of the Southern Conference Tournament for two consecutive years, in 2005 and 2006. The Mocs had four-consecutive winning seasons from 2005-08, finishing fourth in the very competitive SoCon each year.

Prior to accepting the job at UTC, Garcia was the teaching professional at Cedar Bluff Racquet In 2006 and 2007, Garcia directed the men’s Club in Knoxville, Tenn. women’s tennis head coach When the head women’s tennis coaching position became vacant in the fall of 2007, Chattanooga Athletics Director Rick Hart turned to a familiar face and proven winner: Jeff Clark. A native Chattanoogan and a former UTC head coach, Clark returned to the university on December 17, 2007 to lead the women’s tennis program.

Hart said, “Jeff Clark has great experience as a teacher of tennis and a leader of young people. His teams have demonstrated what we are looking for athletically and academically, and he has always held sportsmanship on the court in high esteem.”

Clark’s success is showing on the court in his first four-plus years back at UTC. Last season, the Lady Mocs went 11-11 and posted a 6-4 record in Southern Conference action. After going 3-7 in SoCon play in 2010, the Lady Mocs improved a full three games in league matches this season. head coach Jim Thompson. Clark joined Thompson’s staff in 1997 and their coaching partnership proved to be an immediate success, leading the UTC men to the Southern Conference tournament title and the women to the tournament finals.

Clark has enjoyed success throughout his collegiate coaching career. From 2002 to 2006 Clark served as the men’s assistant coach at the University of Mississippi, one of the top programs in all of college tennis. Working with legendary coach Billy Chadwick, he helped coach the Rebels to four consecutive top-ten national team rankings, back-toback SEC team titles, four SEC West titles, one Final Four appearance, and numerous All-American singles and doubles honors.

One of his Ole Miss players, Catalin Gard, achieved the number one singles ranking in college tennis during the 2004-05 season.

In 2006 Clark was named ITA Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year and thus nominated for ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year.

The Southern Conference, which began its 91st season of intercollegiate competition in 2011, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the studentathlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models.

The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics.

From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984) and becoming the first conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer.

The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association.

Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination.

Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions.

The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships.

The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.

Membership History On Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (SIAA) 30 members met at Atlanta’s

Southern conference Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference.

On hand at the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee. Dr. S.V. Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman and N.W. Dougherty of Tennessee was named secretary. The decision to form a new athletic conference was motivated by the desire to have a workable number of conference games for each league member. With 30 schools in the SIAA by the early 1920s, it was impossible to play every school at least once during the regular season and many

schools went several years between playing some conference members.

In addition, in 1920, the SIAA voted down proposed rules that an athlete must be in a college a year before playing on its teams and refused to abolish a rule permitting athletes to play summer baseball for money.

Play began in the fall of 1921 and a year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league including Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925 and Duke was added in 1929.

By the 1930s, membership in the Southern Conference had reached 23 schools. C.P. “Sally” Miles of Virginia Tech, president of the Southern Conference, called the annual league meeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932 at

the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn.

Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of the new league included Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt.

According to the minutes of the meeting, Dr. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida’s Dr. J.J. Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as the Southern Conference had grown too large. The resignations were accepted and the withdrawing schools formed the new league which began play in 1932.

The Southern Conference continued with membership of 10 institutions including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. The second major shift occurred some 20 years later. By 1952, the Southern Conference included 17 colleges and universities.

Another split occurred when seven schools including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference which began play in 1953. The revamped Southern Conference included members The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary.

Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 12 institutions and a footprint that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford.

Dr. Roger G. Brown, a proven academic leader and native Tennessean, is the 15th head of The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His appointment as Chancellor was celebrated by the campus in February of 2006.

Under Brown’s leadership, the campus has experienced record enrollment growth at all levels, reaching the significant milestone of surpassing more than 10,000 students in fall 2009.

Since taking the helm of the Chattanooga campus, he has promoted UTC’s mission as a metropolitan university with special emphasis in the fields of science, mathematics and technology.

When Rick Hart came to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, he brought with him a vision and plan for the future of the Mocs. Over the last five years, Hart has changed the landscape of the UTC Athletics Department with his leadership, organizational skills and innovative ideas on how to fulfill the Mocs’ mission of preparing students for productive and meaningful lives. Since his hiring on May 23, 2006, Hart’s efforts have made a tremendous impact on the Mocs student-athletes’ quest for comprehensive excellence – academically, athletically and socially.

Academically • Shown continuous improvement in the overall grade-point-averages for student-athletes in each of the last six semesters - highlighted by a 2.97 g.p.a. in the spring of 2011, the highest semester mark on record.

• Over half of the Mocs’ student-athletes made the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll each of the last four semesters.

• Developed and implemented an ambitious APR improvement plan that has increased the APR scores of all Mocs athletics programs.

• Expanded the Compliance and Academic Services departments to help student-athletes progress toward the ultimate goal of earning a college degree.

Academically • 31 student-athletes had a 4.0 gradepoint-average in the Fall of 2010.

• Over half of the Mocs’ student-athletes made the Dean’s List for the last three semesters.

• 11 teams had a 3.0+ grade-point-average in the fall 2010, including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track & field and volleyball.

Athletically • Four teams won SoCon titles in 2009-10, including women’s basketball, wrestling, softball and women’s golf.

• Six Mocs won individual SoCon titles or athlete of the year awards in 2009-10, including Emmanuel Kirwa (Cross Country), Shanara Hollinquest (Women’s Basketball), Stephan Jaeger (Men’s Golf), Josh Beard (Football), Anneli Uys (Outdoor Track) and Dean Pavlou (Wrestling).

• Women’s basketball senior Shanara Hollinquest was named the SoCon Female Athlete of the Year.

• Frank Reed (Softball), Russ Huesman (Football) and Colette Murray (Women’s Golf) were all named SoCon Coach of the Year in 2009-10.

Socially • The Mocs volunteered at numerous community events throughout the year, including Bloodanooga, Special Olympics, Race for the Cure, Chattanooga Area Food Bank, Breast Cancer Awareness Day and many more.

• The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has been established to encourage and develop student leadership.
