From a tiny country in Central Africa comes one of the most gifted and celebrated percussion ensembles in the world — Royal Drummers and Dancers of Burundi. Their dance and drumming performances are based on ancient sacred traditions that have been passed down from father to son for centuries, yet these distinctive early rhythms sound as modern as any contemporary beat. The thunderous drum sound — the “Burundi beat”— has gained the rapt attention of audiences worldwide and influenced popular Western contemporary artists like Joni Mitchell, Adam and the Ants, and Bow Wow Wow. Originally used exclusively for ceremonial occasions, the distinctive drums are made from hollowed tree trunks and animal skins. Set in Northern Italy, this enduring tale is the classic battle for power between the sexes. Bianca, the beautiful youngest child of a lord, cannot marry until her elder sister, Katherina, finds a husband. The older girl’s fierce temper and caustic wit frightens away every prospective suitor, until she meets her match in Petruchio, a newcomer who is hired to seduce and tame her. This timeless play with its controversial depiction of marriage told in Shakespeare’s sharp, witty language, has inspired countless imitations from Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate, to the modern retelling, 10 Things I Hate About You. Set in a fishing village in ancient Ceylon, two pearl fishermen, Zurga and Nadir, whose friendship was tested years earlier over their romantic obsession with the same beautiful stranger, declare their brotherly bond in one of Bizet’s best-loved duets, Au fond du temple saint. But their long lost love, Leila, soon returns as a mysterious priestess, and when her true identity is revealed their deadly rivalry is, quite literally, reignited. Founded in 1962 by legendary conductor Leopold Stokowski, the American Symphony Orchestra was conceived to showcase extraordinary American musicianship. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this season, this esteemed ensemble appears under the baton of its longtime Music Director Leon Botstein. Lifelong friends who are devoted to each other, they nurture a hopeless dream of someday saving enough money to buy a farm. Join us for a benefit in support of student scholarships at George Mason University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts and the Great Performances at Mason season at the Center for the Arts. The evening begins by showcasing the remarkable talents of Mason students amid an array of spectacular food and beverages, and culminates in the Concert Hall with a performance by Broadway ingénue and two-time Tony Award-winner, Sutton Foster. Don’t miss this incredible vocal powerhouse in a performance of showstoppers and ballads, showcasing her powerful soprano, fantastic footwork, and dazzling acting. A private dessert and champagne reception with the artist takes place on stage following the performance.

Great Performances at Mason: Backstage Notes Pre-Performance Discussions Each of our Concert Hall performances is preceded by a lively presentation led by local experts, and sometimes the artist themselves. These popular discussions are a wonderful way to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the performance you are about to see. Pre-Performance Discussions are held on Grand Tier III in a relaxed, conversational atmosphere 45 minutes prior to each performance. Admission is free to all ticket holders. Parking There is plenty of inexpensive covered parking in the Parking Deck adjacent to the facility and free parking in outdoor lots just a short walk away.
