WELCOME TO CEREMONY

SAN DIEGO!

2012 proves to be a big year for both Ceremony Magazine and myself personally. We launch our first Bay Area edition of Ceremony; we publish our three Southern California annual editions for the eighth year; we introduce our all new innovative Ceremony blog; we complete a Ceremony website renovation and makeover; I am on twitter faithfully and for the first time ever; I enjoy a milestone birthday; and together with my husband and Ceremony business partner I celebrate ten years of marriage. Now more than ever, we don’t just aim to inspire, we strive to bring you pure wedding ingenuity. The 330 pages that follow showcase the vendors that make this happen, and we think you’ll agree that they are quite ingenious. This Great List of wedding professionals contains not only many of the best in San Diego, but also some of the finest in the country. Through beautiful imagery and brief editorial contributions, together we bring you fresh ideas, the latest trends, and new ways to apply old traditions. Quality is evident and creativity flourishes on pages spotlighting stunning tabletop designs and chic fashion spreads. From cutting edge fashion to the smallest planning detail, Ceremony is for the smart and stylish bride that appreciates refined quality and extraordinary service. If this is you, and you want to see your wedding published in our Weddings of Distinction section, please send an email directly to me at aharrick@ceremonymagazine.com and let me know which of our Great List of wedding professionals you hired after finding them in Ceremony. We will give your wedding special consideration since we know you chose vendors whose quality we can trust. It is our pleasure to continue to showcase more real Weddings of Distinction than ever before! With 40 real weddings in this San Diego issue alone, and more than 150 collectively amongst our four California magazines, we highlight the featured vendors we know you can trust. Throughout the entire magazine, we have listed their web addresses alongside their work as a helpful tool when you are flipping through Ceremony Magazine online. You can link directly from the ceremonymagazine.com digital magazine pages to our featured and respected vendors’ websites. We have also included other wedding contributors chosen by our featured couples so that you may make your own informed decisions. How do you know he is…the one? You may have been asked this question by your parents, your friends, even yourself. The answer isn’t always perfectly clear; he may or may not be ‘ideal’ on paper; you may have known him for only two months or perhaps you’ve been hanging in there a good five years; he may be a cowboy while you were visualizing a business man. The so-called ‘signs’ aren’t always there, but somehow…you just know. At Ceremony, we feel the same way about our Great List of vendors that we recommend. We take this vendor collective very seriously, which is why we don’t put arbitrary consideration requirements in an antiquated form. We don’t have a scholastic checklist to help us come up with an ‘A’ grade. We don’t even have a job application type form to fill out. You see, when it comes to choosing our Great List of recommended vendors, we believe there is no specific formula for choosing who we invite to join our family. Probably not unlike you, we take a looksie at Facebook, we inquire with their friends and colleagues and, most importantly, we get to know them by social networking the old-fashioned way (in person). In the end, we go with our gut. We just…know. You will find that some of these recommended vendors have refined their businesses over the past twenty years, while others bring fresh ideas after having recently started their own businesses. Many of our recommended venues are on the AAA Five-Diamond Resort list; others include charming private estates and everything in between. What they all have in common is that we have a mutual respect for each other; we each genuinely want to see the other succeed; we envision a future together. Do those relationship qualities sound familiar with someone you know? We hope that you will find this varied Great List vendor collective to be helpful in finding your wedding day professionals. There is no single vendor that is perfect for everyone, but there are vendors that are perfect for you. And when you meet them, you will just know.

DARIN FONG PHOTOGRAPHY

Darin Fong has been behind the lens his entire life. After college, he moved to NYC and later founded his own production company, specializing in digital special effects for feature films and television commercials. After achieving much success, Darin’s life switched gears when he became a father. From that point on, Darin focused his efforts on wedding photography. He believes in the candid shot: the image that captures what the bride and groom are feeling at a specific moment. He has distinguished himself by shooting live video with his digital camera, offering a “fusion” of moving video and still imagery—resulting in a truly unique, emotional representation of the wedding day.

THE STUDIOS OF JOSEPH GUIDI

JENNIFER DERY PHOTOGRAPHY

Natural, clean, romantic, fun and eclectic photography. “Happily married for 16 years, I know how important your photos are going to be in years to come. That is why I strive to deliver more than my clients expect. By becoming part of your family, I feel and see the emotions unfolding throughout the day, and this will be portrayed in your photographs. It would be a privilege to share your wedding day.”

Praised for her artistic eye and unique perspective, Jennifer has become one of the most sought after wedding photojournalists in San Diego and beyond. Her documentary-style wedding coverage captures emotionally charged, detail rich images that genuinely capture the spirit and ambiance of the wedding celebration. Jennifer is honored to have her images regularly featured in many wedding publications nationwide.

Yasmine and Deshun’s passion and love for one another is what motivates them to create their beautiful art together. This husband-and-wife team of 9 years appreciates how their fashion background influences and fuses with their modern wedding photography. Images that evoke emotion pop with intense color, and high contrast black and whites look like they came from your favorite fashion magazine. These edgy, artsy images are what this duo is known for. “What a joy it is for us to share such a special day with our couples, and to document their precious moments with a kiss of our artistic flair. We aim to capture the unexpected, while letting our genuine love for people and our ability to create a fun atmosphere shine through.” dapperimages.com 760.809.1240

It is the combined images from the Great List of photographers that make up a majority of Ceremony. Their unique blend of personalities and photographic styles are brought to life, detail after detail, wedding after wedding, emotion after emotion, on the pages of Ceremony. The covered “short-list” of Ceremony San Diego’s advertisers is kept exclusive to a limited number of only the finest photographers in the industry.

With a background in graphic design and a lifelong passion for all things art, Pam discovered her talent for photography more than ten years ago, following the birth of her son. Known for her relaxed portrait style, artistic perspective, and attention to detail, Pam draws her inspiration from the couple’s connection. “I adore my couples, and their experience with me is as important as the photos. They trust me to be themselves, and that’s when the magic happens.” pamscottphoto.com 760.744.1125

LABARGE PHOTOGRAPHY

LaBarge Photography is a husband and wife team working with a limited number of couples each year. We share a common love and devotion for photography, yet each has our own style, vision and emotion toward weddings. We approach each event as an opportunity to surround ourselves with wonderful people and create images with personality, romance and humor. We bend the rules of conventional wedding photography with an energetic and refreshing approach. We enjoy what we do and are willing to go that extra step to ensure each wedding is a success. labargephotography.com 619.876.0363

True Photography Weddings is a close-knit collaboration among five of San Diego’s acclaimed wedding photographers. Each photographer’s distinct style and personality shows through in the images they capture. When photographing a wedding, True Photography Weddings creates simple, timeless and elegant images that evoke all of the emotions of the wedding day. Bridesto-be are invited to meet with one or all of the photographers at the Solana Beach location. truephotographyweddings.com 858.345.1248

PAUL BARNETT

Paul Barnett’s work is evidence of his unobtrusiveness and spontaneous eye. His photographic intuition allows him to capture images that embrace the concept of both perspective and attitude. Based on a mandate to be truly reactive rather than proactive and a dedication to record events as a historian rather than a director, the final result is a collection of photographs, genuine and unrehearsed, that bring to life the small idiosyncrasies that define us as indiviuduals. barnettphoto.com 619.285.1207

LOVE ART PHOTOGRAPHY

People and their relationships are at the heart of our work as we strive to capture their uniqueness and what makes them special. We want our clients to be “wowed” with one-ofa-kind modern art pieces with their lives as inspiration. Our style is contemporary urban imagery that results from a blend of modern photojournalism and lifestyle photography infused with our love of fashion and fine art. We are honored to participate in one of the most important occasions in a couple’s life. It is a day to be treasured and captured in the finest light, from the most creative and pleasing angles. We thank our clients for letting us tell their story. loveartphotography.com 619.741.7958

THE FAMILY STONE Diamonds are more than just a girl’s best friend. For businesswoman Mali Digius, diamonds gave her family the world. As owner of Diamond Boutique in Del Mar, Mali’s entire family owns and operates the showroom, giving meaning to this rare stone in more ways than one. 30 years ago, this wife and mother found herself fleeing from her native country. Having to leave all her belongings behind, she cleverly hid her prized diamonds in a tube of toothpaste as a safety net on their travels. From Iran to Mexico, these gems kept the family strong and heading toward their future.

THE 4 C’s

CUT is the only factor of a diamond that is determined by the human hand. It has nothing to do with the shape of the stone, rather the symmetry and proportion. If cut poorly, the stone will be less brilliant. COLOR is the whiteness of the stone. Most women prefer color and carat over clarity. CARAT refers to the size, and in this instance, size does matter. On average a one-carat diamond is the starting point for engagement rings. The bigger the budget, the greater the carat. CLARITY is the cleanliness of the stone. The lower the clarity, the more personality a diamond has. “Like a birthmark” it’s good to see these recognizable differences in diamonds so you can tell yours apart; it gives your diamond character.

Diamonds hold a true significance to each possessor. The choice of an engagement ring can be the biggest decision in a man’s life, more so than the decision to propose in the first place. It’s important to trust in a jeweler who can be there for all of life’s very special moments. POPPING THE QUESTIONS Tips from the experts at The Diamond Boutique THE PROPOSED BUDGET 3 months salary is the average budget a suitor sets aside for the engagement ring. However the real question is how much can he spend? Some girls would rather wait for an extravagant ring while others have been dreaming about the milliondollar diamond forever. There will be anniversaries in the future, so stick with an option that feels attainable.

ANNIVERSARY JEWELS

As time goes on, so do the diamonds! • 1st Year ~ a pendant that matches the engagement ring or birthstone • 5th Year ~ finances start to settle as your approach the fifth year of marriage, many find this the year to “upgrade” • 10th Year ~ an anniversary band with 5 stones or eternity band • 25 years ~ the coveted diamond tennis bracelet

BUY WITH THE BRIDE? While some couples choose to pick out the engagement ring together; the element of surprise is lost, notes youngest daughter, Natasha, a graduate gemologist who runs the store with her mother. “This is the true testament to a relationship and maintains the overall romance of the proposal. When something strikes his eye, he’s found the one.” MIXED METALS Think about the woman’s lifestyle? Is she active? Does she work with her hands? Platinum is the sturdiest of metals while white gold is more delicate. Perhaps she prefers gold tones to silver. The setting or platform for the diamond is just as important as the stone itself (well, almost). SOMETHING OLD/SOMETHING NEW Consider recycling a family heirloom or customizing a ring specifically for the bride-to-be. Diamond Boutique specializes in designing and modifying rings and can present an image of the final piece to a client before it’s even crafted.

FLIRTING WITH FASHIONISTAS

Bridal fashion know-how from the experts at Nicole Miller, The White Flower Bridal Boutique, Provence by Allyson Simone Brides and Lovella Bridal

What are your favorite styles and fabrics? NM: Jacquard and metal fabrics continue as a perennial interpretation of bridal dresses in Nicole Miller’s collection. Her latest creations include vintage lace, which is a favorite of our brides and staff. WF: The softer, almost muted palates…peaches, blush, grays, beige and nudes. PB: Silk taffetas, crepes and organza are my favorite textiles to work with. An elegant bias with a hand beaded vintage lace, or an elegant low “v” back and a simple cap sleeve is truly an enchanting style. However, by 2013 soft flowing ball gowns will make a comeback. What do you suggest when a bride wants to incorporate her ethnic heritage into her look but still wants the big white dress? WF: We love and encourage a bride to incorporate her heritage, family background, pretty much anything that will tie in their life and roots. It is so important during this special time to feel that you are building a connection and a foundation for your future while “marrying” it with your past. The best thing we can do is be supportive and use all of our experience and knowledge in this industry so our bride feels comfortable enough to make decisions whether its having an alternate dress, incorporating accessories or traditional bridal wear that reflects their background. LB: Demographically our boutiques serve ethnically diverse brides regularly; we believe that incorporating the ethnic heritage is an integral part of successfully completing the search for the perfect gown. Lovella Wedding Specialists aspire to learn every intricate detail of ethnic traditions and the profound meaning it conveys to blend chic, contemporary gowns of today into a timeless yet traditional personal expression on the Ines Di Santo, at Lovella Bridal most important day of her life.

36

CEREMONYMAGAZINE.COM

SD12_Bridal_Salon_Editorial.indd 36

NM: We recommend accessories like a sash, floral hairpiece, or suggest wearing a treasured piece of heirloom jewelry. Brides can also use colors as a component of their look to reflect ethnic heritage. What 2012 designer collection impressed you the most? WF: I think it’s fun to take bridal to another level and bring in some soft color. I love blush so when I saw a gown being done in this color I was so excited! It was also refreshing to see some shorter styles out there. I was very impressed by Alvina Valenta’s collection. It was the perfect blend of femininity with a hint of flirty playfulness. I loved that she incorporated little textured caplets and tulle, keeping it whimsical but realistic. LB: Fashion is ART. Style is an expression. At Lovella we’re very impressed with dramatic, simple, sophisticated elegance, detailed yet delicate but bold embellishments that make a statement. Some of our favorites are: Ines Di Santo, Lazaro, Edgardo Bonilla, Alvina Valenta and Pronovias. PB: As a designer myself, I never look to what other designers are doing, as I concentrate on my own collection. However, I do pay close attention to the textiles as this is my specialty. What are your favorite current trends? WF: I love themed weddings. Whether it’s a rustic theme and the brides are wearing cowboy boots or “old Hollywood glamour” with bright red lipstick and long white gloves. Who should accompany a bride when selecting a gown? LB: The individuals near and dear to the bride that truly understands her vision and style are most suitable to share the day of selection. Attention seekers with strong opinions should be excluded. NM: Brides should make their first visit alone in order to focus on their

own preferences and narrow down their initial choices to several favorite gowns. On a second visit, brides should bring a couple of close friends or family members. Feedback from others is important to most brides, but remember that too many opinions can lead to confusion! WF: Surrounding yourself with honest, caring, and supportive people will only make the experience better. Everyone wants to feel confident in their selections and this is a time where their gut feeling is very important so its great to have people who appreciate and encourage that. PB: Brides should always go with their gut feeling when selecting a gown by how she feels in it. Brides can be over bombarded with friends and family’s negative comments, which can be detrimental. Bring one to two people with you and then choose.

Provence by Allyson Simone Brides

What are your thoughts regarding searching the web for “the one?” LB: Searching the web is a great initial step to educate oneself of current fashion trends, styles, and designers, however the best way to narrow the field is to go for a personal shopping experience at a reputable bridal boutique to actually try on gowns. WF: I think its great to get ideas from the web. It’s one of the best places to have trends and options at your fingertips. However, I would suggest not relying on the Internet to give you the experience of finding your gown. It really is a trial and error process. Everything looks different on each individual as it also looks different on the hanger or on a mannequin. Keep an open-mind as this is fun and once in a lifetime. PB: The web is overwhelming and trying to find “the one” dress online can be more frustrating. Bridal boutiques have loads of information and the owners (in some cases the designers) can give

38

CEREMONYMAGAZINE.COM

SD12_Bridal_Salon_Editorial.indd 38

the bride a wealth of knowledge. To touch and feel fabrics, view laces and talk with the experts can give the bride exactly what she is looking for in a dress. The web will never give a bride the personal connection for viewing the top designers first hand. Do you see big weddings a la Kim Kardashian or Kate Middleton influencing bridal fashion? Do these weddings inspire you? PB: Private label companies are inspired by celebrity weddings and that is a trend that last a few months then is gone. As a designer, I have never been inspired by TV show weddings, which are more melodrama than a tasteful affair between two people who are in love. What inspires me the most is simply the bride’s warmth she brings into Provence or to view the Allyson Simone collection. When the bride smiles as she is trying on her gown for the first time – that love is real, which makes being inspired all the more worth it. Bridesmaid dresses make a big impact on the overall look of the wedding. Do you have any advice for brides in selecting dresses for their maids? NM: Many brides are now selecting a color or palette and allowing their bridesmaids to choose a style that flatters them individually. At Nicole Miller, we can fit bridesmaids in styles that flatter their different personalities and body types, yet still maintain a cohesive look. A Nicole Miller bridesmaid is always simple and chic. PB: Bridesmaid dresses do make a big impact and my advice for brides is to keep it simple and elegant: short to knee length dresses for morning and noon weddings and long, elegant gowns for evening events are best. The textiles on the bridesmaids’ dresses can change the course of the look so be careful not only to choose a style or cut, but pay attention to the textile. LB: When selecting bridesmaids dresses be mindful and sensitive to various body types and styles. It is more important to choose styles that best flatter the overall fit and look of the maids vs. dresses that look good in magazines or on hangers but may not be the best suitable choice for your maids. WF: Determine whether you want dresses similar or if you want them to be completely different. This will help narrow your choices with fabrics and silhouettes. Then onto your next step…color! From there, the process should be a bit easier and that’s what consultants are here for! You may now visit The White Flower’s sister store, The Bridesmaid Boutique, for the latest styles in designer bridesmaid attire.

COOKING UP A CUSTOM MENU With Coast Catering by Barry Layne

Salty vs. sweet. Western vs. Asian. Steak vs. fish. “Not to worry,” says Chef Barry Layne of Coast Catering by Barry Layne. “I tell them, it sounds like you have a lot of different taste buds coming, so let’s talk about this.” Layne expresses to couples that this special day truly is a reflection of both of them and there really are no rules. “We start by finding out as much as possible about their eating habits! I love to hear about where they like to travel, where they JENNIFER DERY

frequently eat and also what their families are like.” Layne proceeds by giving the couple ideas of what initially comes to mind. This is a process that is never rehearsed and is always different. This allows for the creativity to start flowing and also gets the excitement up. “We start throwing out menu ideas along with concepts on how they would be served. For me the crazier the better and I always enjoy the

easy to produce perfect food at a tasting and then not execute on site and some of that is true but for the most part with a watchful eye you are able to see the attention to detail and sincerity beyond the food to which makes a great caterer versus a typical one.” An important consideration is whether you will have guests from other parts of the country or the world. “I had a groom from Germany and the bride was from Mexico City. In addition, many of their guests were from the Midwest. A great combination, right? We incorporated the Latin flair into the tray passed appetizers. The main stay of the menu was California eclectic but with items representative of the Midwest such as a grilled marinated Kobe skirt steak with a port salute cheese PAUL BARNETT

and Yukon gold potato croquette, red wine reduction and a grilled corn Since each and every event is only limited by imagination (and

and mango salsa for a main course. We introduced the German touch

budget, of course!), Layne’s ultimate goal as their chef is to

to incorporate everyone’s tastes into one menu!” This is why cooking up a custom designed menu ensures that each and every client, not to

mention their guests, is happy with their final menu. CEREMONYMAGAZINE.COM

THE WRIGHT WAY

CM: A floral designer’s job seems so glamorous because we see the beautiful end result; but of course it is very labor-intensive. Please give us a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes to prepare for a big event. KW: It is true that very few people know what it takes to make it all happen. It starts with four to eight hours of personal consultation ‘face time’ meetings to determine the look of the event; then there are as many as hundreds of correspondence emails in planning and preparation; I spend another 20 hours on preparation and paperwork and as 10 to 20 hours working with subcontractors (lighting, sound, furniture designers, linen companies, etc). My office support staff puts in at least another 20 hours researching products for the event (just the right crystals, candles, fabrics, and the like). Then my production team kicks in. They process the flowers as they enter the building and pack containers ‘just so’ (arrangements are like houses… if the foundation is wobbly, the house comes down! No bueno!). The designers create beautiful floral; their support staff helps dump trash cans, tag boxes of candles, label and sort linens, iron the backdrop fabric, clean the vans and load trucks. And all of this happens before we step a foot onto the property. Wedding day starts at 4:30 A.M. for me, and my staff around 6:30 A.M. The last employee leaves the building at 2:30 A.M. or later, after the last flower petal has been cleared from the venue. If our clients have participated in our floral donation program, Forget Me Not Foundation, then I or a kind hearted staff member will return the following morning at the crack of dawn to distribute the flowers to our partners who then deliver the flowers to nursing homes, care centers and shelters. CM: Tell us about your favorite wedding you ever created? KW: It is really about the couple. Whether we are creating abstract and unique décor pieces, hanging 5000 stems of orchids in a ceiling of an estate-sized tent, covering an iron gazebo that overlooks an ocean, covering a swimming pool with Lucite, or fluttering hundreds, wait, thousands of butterflies over a dance floor, my ‘favorite’ clients are those that let me be creative for them! CM: How did you get started in floral design? KW: My favorite story of a lifetime…I wanted a car and my dad said, “Well, you better find a job!”

PAUL BARNETT

an interview with one of San Diego’s most beloved and time honored floral designers, Kathy Wright Of Kathy Wright & Co.

CM: You are extremely well respected in the San Diego wedding community. What do you think has been the key to your success? KW: Thank you! It almost brings tears to my eyes to hear you say that. I work in my own little corner of the world, and I really don’t know what others say about me. I’m glad to know that people respect my work. My company is built around a very ‘high service, high ethics, high morals’ value system. It is how I live my life. The key to success is simple: put your clients first, return calls and emails promptly, be friendly and kind to your clients (even when they are nasty and mean to you), work hard, be fair, be honest and give them more than what they pay for each and every time! CM: If you could design a dinner party for ANYONE, who would it be and what would you do? KW: My own daughter and her future husband and their children. It would be a vintage wedding, designed with a 1940’s post war theme, in their home, which is vintage 1950’s at its best! CM: What is your advice for choosing a wedding floral designer? KW: Select someone you feel comfortable with from the minute you meet them. Tell them the look you want and turn them loose! Don’t ask to see a photo of each and every thing...the element of surprise can be a good thing! CM: Advice for floral décor in general? KW: Look at the venue and think about what the vibe is to start with… don’t try to cram a vintage lacy wedding into the modern art museum, or an uber contemporary single flower look at the Grand Del Mar.

GIFT OF ONESELF

A boudoir album is the sexiest groom’s gift that a bride can give her man. It is not only a special and personalized gift, but also an incredible way to add to the excitement of the wedding day! Take the time to plan out your outfits and accessories before you come in; and have a little fun shopping for new exquisite bridal lingerie! If you need help in styling your shoot, your photographer will be able to lend a hand. Above all, remember to have fun! While this is typically a gift for the groom, brides often realize that a boudoir shoot is actually more of a gift to herself!

NEED SOME NRG? NRG (yes, it is a play on the word ‘energy’) isn’t one of those entertainment groups that come around often. They are chameleonlike, performing every musical genre from the twenties to Lady Gaga. Their repertoire is endless. If you want Broadway show tunes, no problem. Love Frank Sinatra? They’ll fly you to the moon.

“It was my wife and I,” says Andy Salmonsen. “We were playing gigs and we just blossomed from there. We added three girls then some more musicians and before you knew it, we had the ability to perform a thirty-five person orchestra.” Besides just growing in numbers, NRG stayed on the cutting-edge of the music industry by adapting to each style. “Our strength is really in our diversity,” Salmonsen says. “We have a wide array of performers. Each of them have different strengths and they bring that to NRG.” It’s true, a notion confirmed by one look at their lineup. They have a Puerto Rican drummer who brings the sensual pulse of Latin music for brides wanting a tango. There’s the former Miss Mississippi who can sing ‘Il Bambino’ like it’s closing night at the New York opera. Rounding out the band even more is their horn player, a musician who cut his melodic chops with Ray Charles. Beyond their impressive resumes, NRG is mostly known for its chemistry. Years of playing together and their close-knit community makes for some dynamic performances.

Looking at NRG now, with their stunning costumes, flawless musical execution, and instant charisma, it’s hard to believe the entire company grew out of one duo.

“We really are a family,” Salmonsen explains. “And that translates. We appreciate each other and we appreciate each and every family we play for. When we’re singing ‘Butterfly Kisses’ and we see a dad dancing with his little girl who just got married, we have to hold it in. Because we are right there in the moment with you.” And that’s what makes NRG meaningful. They don’t go on and on about their celebrity clientele or brag about the big-name gigs they’ve played. They focus on the heartfelt moments and their gratitude at being able to facilitate them. “Those are the times that stay with us,” Salmonsen says. “That’s why we do this.”

Roll up to your wedding in vintage style There are the princess brides – they want the whole Cinderella horse and carriage bit. There are the trendy brides. For them, a suped up limo just off of an MTV music video shoot is transportation perfected. And there are hipster brides. Two-seater bicycle from Goodwill anyone? But for the more, shall we say, restrained class of bride there is something else. Vintage cars and classic limos. Sleek vehicles that add style to any wedding. With Kate Middleton herself arriving at her wedding in a vintage Rolls Royce, it’s an entrance any elegant bride would want.

“The car can really make the day,” says Sherry Walters of Classic Limos, a Southern California vintage limousine company. “There are so many ways to incorporate the vehicle into the wedding, from photos to grand exits and entrances.” Classic Limos itself boasts a fleet of fourteen cars collected from various parts of America and Canada. Its crowning piece is an original 1927 Packard, one of the few in the world available for hire. When reserving a vehicle, there are a few things to consider, from making sure the limo you rent is mechanically safe to having the driver show up on time.

“Select a licensed and insured limo company,” Walters suggests, noting that more than 90% of the vintage limo companies in Southern California operate without a PUC limousine license and valid insurance. She also encourages brides to see the car prior to the wedding day to ascertain its condition and to work with a company that promises arrival times. “Being late is the number one complaint against limo companies,” Walters says. “Choose a company with an on time guarantee that will email you in advance.” For stylish brides who have a penchant for nostalgia, the vintage car is the way to go.

WEDDING DESTINATION : COLOMBIA WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY GENE KOSOY gkweddings.com

Escape in an Amazon safari, explore archaeological ruins, walk on Caribbean beaches, hike on high-mountain treks…today’s Colombia offers you the opportunity to be immersed in the dream-like quality of South American culture on your wedding day. The warmth of the locals, heart-stopping vistas and stable democracy welcome you to the new Colombia. As a photographer, I have recently combed Colombia, searching out unique destination wedding locations. These days Colombia is as safe as it is beautiful. Locations such as Medellin, San Andres and Cartagena are ideal spots for American couples and their friends and families to celebrate. My photos tell an extraordinary story about a vibrant and fascinating country.

Medellin

Surrounded by plush green mountains is Medellin, the second largest city in Colombia. During the last week of July Medellin celebrates Fiesta de la Flores, “The flower festival.” There are parties, music events and parades throughout the city. This eclectic celebration brings together all the elements of Colombian culture and is representative of the way people live their lives here. There is world-class shopping, dining and nightlife making for a very modern and vibrant city. Just an hour outside of Medellin is Santa Fe Antioquia, a safe and tranquil town. Padre Juan Ramon, the priest of the local church, says “the reasons why couples choose Santa Fe are simple. The quiet, the safety, and the human quality.” The Hotel Mariscat, Hotel Tenerife, Hotel La Extramadura, and Hacienda Fizebad, a ranch, are all sought after venues that showcase the warmth and beauty of Colombian culture.

San Andres

San Andres, a white sand island, has one main city. Many hotels and resorts are located throughout San Andres and its sister islands. The Decameron Aquarium, set on a miniature island, offers water views from every room. The Decameron Marazul is also an all-inclusive hotel. A top pick for a small reception site is La Regata restaurant owned by a married couple, Gulio and Gloria. The restaurant sits on a dock featuring a rustic maritime theme with an amazing seafood menu. Beach weddings are popular on one of the two small islands located five minutes away from shore by motorboat.

Cartagena

The Northern Colombian city of Cartagena boasts an intricate maze of walls, forts and bastilles. Pebbled stone streets provide Spanish character. Outside the city is Bocagrande, a modern strip of high-rise hotels and beaches. Teatro Adolfo Mejia, a majestic theater, popular among celebrities, has a sweeping stage where couples say their vows. Once the ceremony is over, the curtains lift and the stage transforms into a reception area. For couples seeking a destination location, Colombia is well worth exploring. Chances are, as you stand beneath a historic fortress or meander along the sand, you’ll fall in love all over again – not just with each other but with this country. Gene Kosoy is a San Francisco based wedding photographer. His passion for photography and travel have taken him around the world capturing beautiful unions and discovering new places. His work is published worldwide. In addition to photography Gene writes for wedding publications.

LOVE STORY

While visiting their respective friends, who happened to be dating, Kelly and Regan were set up on a little blind date of their own. Knowing that she lived in Chicago and he in Portland, her first thought was, “I hope he’s not cute.” Of course, the pair hit it off instantly and then began their long distance affair. Regan started accumulating serious frequent flyer miles with trips traveling to see her. Two months after they met, Kelly was certain he was the one; ten months later, she quit her job to move to a city she had only visited once. Three years down the road, Regan planned to propose during a family vacation in Hawaii. As the couple dashed out the door to catch their plane, he just couldn’t wait any longer and dropped to one knee and popped the question.

Laura and Patrick dated for seven years, traversing through college and their postacademia years together. From finals to job interviews to settling down, they stuck by each other through each phase of life. However, once Patrick proposed to Laura, they decided not to wait any longer. With little time to spare, they planned a sophisticated coastal wedding in two months. Their mantra became “don’t sweat the small stuff,” and by the time Laura walked down the aisle, they both knew this new chapter would be the very best.

Matt and Chelsea met and fell in love at a telecommunications company. That meant a lot of carpooling down San Diego’s picturesque coast. As they traveled along the Pacific, they spotted a stunning wedding held at a resort. Right then and there it was decided; should they ever get married, that would be their spot. During the next few years, they would repeatedly drive the same route, witnessing wedding after wedding. When Matt finally popped the question, one thing was very certain. Their day had finally come.

Like every aspiring fiancé, Paul wanted his proposal to Emily to be perfect. Yet he couldn’t quite figure out how to do it. He knew lots of people went for hikes, a favorite spot, or the beach. Yet none of those fit Emily. Then one night, as he was lying in bed, it hit him - Easter! It was their favorite holiday. So Paul set about creating an Easter basket to end all Easter baskets. He wrote down their top ten moments and put them in plastic eggs. The center egg held her engagement ring. Needless to say, it was the best Easter basket Emily ever received.

No stranger to happily ever afters, Jared was used to capturing tales of love as the owner/ founder of Bauman Photographers. A mutual friend may have known all along that Jared was meant to be with Sara and tried to set the pair up a year before their paths actually crossed. It was at Church where these two would finally connect and their story would start. On a camping trip to Yosemite, right in front of the Ahwahnee with the dogwood in bloom, Jared asked Sara to be his forever.

It all started when Tim saw Denise waltz up the stairs at a restaurant. They were both abroad in Costa Rica; Denise, on a “girls” trip, while Tim was there for the pristine surfing conditions. Noticing this dark-haired beauty, he struck up a casual conversation with her. That was all it took. The pair spent the next five days touring the picturesque countryside and lounging on the beach. When they went back to the states, Tim quickly booked a flight to Denise’s hometown in Tennessee and before long, he was asking her to be his travel partner forever.

New Years eve, circa 2005, Jimmy Love’s in the Gaslamp. Eric and his friends had planned to celebrate the New Year downtown and it just so happened that Michelle’s sister was one of Eric’s friends. Shortly before midnight, Michelle’s sister, in typical sibling fashion, set the pair up by confessing that they thought each other was cute. About fifteen minutes before midnight, the two met, locked eyes and kissed at the stroke of 12. It would be four years later that Eric surprised Michelle with a proposal on the beach and the newly engaged returned to Jimmy Love’s where all their friends were waiting to share in their joy.

After making their introductions, Erin wasted no time to ask, “What happened to your face?” Much to her concern, he proceeded to cut the date short at 8pm because of his rigorous work schedule. However, despite the wound and early exit, the two continued to get to know each other and a loving relationship formed. From early on, both knew their unique first date would indeed be their last.

LOVE STORY

Dale picked the most romantic of days to propose to Adrienne, on the feast of St. Valentine. His delivery, however, was not as dreamy. Instead in his straightforward manner he said, “you know this marriage thing – let’s just do it – pick out whatever ring you want and let’s set a date.” For Adrienne, who had always admired this man for his directness, there was only one answer. She had found her prince charming.

LOVE STORY

To put it lightly, their first meeting was a little rocky. Dominic, with heroic intentions to rescue Kayla from an uninteresting guy, swooped in to court her. As they walked off together, he was effectively charming until he said, “I heard you were a model, but you aren’t that striking.” Realizing how that sounded, he quickly tried to explain that her beauty was nontraditional. Although it didn’t quite come out right, Kayla was somehow amused by this straightforward fellow and decided to give him a second shot.

At first, they were just casual acquaintances. Having met at the university of Iowa, both Shannon and Bill moved to the buzzing city of Chicago after graduation. Despite sharing an alma mater and hometown, they still fell into that “friendly” category. In fact, when Bill decided to move out to San Diego, Shannon distinctly remembers thinking, “That’s cool. Goodbye, Bill Thompson.” Little did she know that they would connect again, this time on the west coast. After meeting up in the California sunshine, they realized they were meant to be and have been together ever since.

In high school, Lori was the girl next door… literally. She lived one house over from Adam, and although they attended the same school, the pair simply never really met. They would come and go, occasionally catching glimpses of each other. Eighteen years later, the modern world of social media would reconnect these seeming strangers, and Facebook would be the catalyst to a love affair that was meant to be all along.

LOVE STORY

Unknown to Lacey and Dave, a friend’s wedding was supposed to be the set up of the century. Although the two danced that night, the sparks didn’t fly. They even shared a seat on a bus trip later that Fall to the Notre Dame/USC game and still, no romance. Fast forward to a Friend Thanksgiving and while most guests had left, great conversation and Sunday night football kept Dave lingering and he asked to continue the good time over dinner. Less than two weeks later, the pair spent an unforgettable night at Carnivale and haven’t looked back since.

Being sent to London for work, Michelle was missing the good old USA (especially Superbowl

There she met a handsome man named Jeremy, who just happened to be seeking the company of his countrymen (or rather, countrywoman). Junior High algebra just wasn’t the right equation to bring Kimberly and Adam together. But a few short years later, these two would become high school sweet hearts and head off to UCLA together. It would be an 8-year courtship

that

his

business trip to Seattle would be the magical moment. After spending Saturday morning sight-seeing on Bainbridge Island, and taking in the incredible beauty, he admitted to Kimberly that he was ready to grow old together and dropped to his knee with a ring in hand.
