irst-year students took the plunge into service and volunteerism on August 29, 2011, in what has become the annual rite of passage known as Community Plunge. The event provides a number of volunteer opportunities and Centenarians provided much-needed help at sites that included Camp Bernie, the Hackettstown Public Library, Warren Haven Nursing Home, America’s Grow-A-Row and more.

Community

In addition to furthering the College’s commitment to serving others, Community Plunge is a day when many lifelong friendships are formed. “It’s a great way for students to get acquainted with the community they’re helping in, but it’s also an opportunity for students to meet people and get to know the Centenary community as well,” said Josh Ecochard, Coordinator of Community Service.

A Growing Partnership

Accelerated degree programs through the Centenary College School of Professional Studies have immense appeal to companies that want to improve and develop their work force. Verizon became the latest Fortune 500 company to partner with Centenary; several cohorts of Verizon employees are earning their bachelor’s degrees or MBAs by taking one class per evening, on-site at company locations in Morristown, Warren and Park Ridge.

“I love it,” said David Samberg ’13, a public relations manager for Verizon Wireless, who is completing an MBA through the Centenary College School of Professional Studies. Samberg, who received his

Last spring, colleagues asked Samberg to recommend a worthy organization for a gift of tree saplings. The initiative is part of the Verizon Wireless Tree Donation Program — for every customer who enrolls or switches to paperless billing, the company pledges to plant a tree. Samberg, who noticed the host of Earth Day initiatives at the College, immediately recommended Centenary. In May, Verizon Wireless donated 200 blue spruce saplings to Centenary. Representatives from the company, along with students and faculty, planted the saplings on the main campus. Some trees were also given to the town of Hackettstown.

Other service collaborations are under way. Samberg recently worked with College officials to bring Hopeline® From Verizon, a phone recycling program, to the Centenary campus. This program collects no longer used phones (from Verizon and other cell phone makers) and recycles or repurposes the phones. All proceeds are directed to local agencies that support and help victims of domestic violence.

“When you donate a phone in New Jersey, you are helping a New Jersey family,” said Samberg, who also manages the Hopeline program. “The more phones we collect, the more money we are able give to these agencies.”

Centenary partnered with the Hopeline program and collected no longer used mobile phones during the month of October. The effort coincided with Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Serving Those Who Serve

Centenary named “Military-Friendly School” for second year in a row Military Mondays. Participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program. Instant Decision Days, One Stop Enrollment programs and a steadfast commitment to educating military and student veterans. These are just a few reasons why G.I. Jobs magazine named Centenary College a Military-Friendly School for 2011, the second consecutive year the College received the honor.

“Centenary College is an institution that really works with our veterans to ensure that the process to come to Centenary is a smooth one,” said Margie Pavlichko, Veterans Administrator and School Certifying Official at Centenary. “We strive to ensure that they are happy with their decision to become a Centenary student.” In fact, thanks to proactive measures initiated by administrative departments, the College now enrolls nearly 70 veterans. This figure includes Centenarians enrolled in undergraduate, graduate and online programs.

In addition to the Yellow Ribbon Program, a benefit authorized under the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill, Centenary College provides many opportunities to assure veterans a comfortable transition to the academic world. Military Mondays are scheduled on the first Monday of each month and provide veterans the opportunity to learn more about starting their education, as well as how to use their benefits.

Veterans also participated in Instant Decision Days and One Stop Enrollment Days held throughout the summer. At these admissions events, prospective students were able to apply and/or apply and enroll to Centenary on the same day.

Centenary Unveils New Websites The address is the same, but the look is more inviting and the navigation definitively more userfriendly. Centenary College unveiled its redesigned website (www.centenarycollege.edu) on July 31, 2011. Work on the redesign began earlier this year, with the goal of establishing a site to support stronger marketing to prospective students and more intuitive navigation for members of the College community.

“People’s time is valuable,” said Doug Hooper, Centenary’s Web Site Content Manager, who worked with a campuswide committee on the project. “The new site was designed to be a more accommodating site that’s cleaner, more welcoming, easier to navigate but also pertinent and relevant to visitors.” Already, Hooper reports that visitors are spending significantly more time on Centenary’s website, an indication that users are exploring, discovering and interacting with Centenary-related information and content. In addition to accommodating multiple platforms, such as the increased use of mobile and smart phones, the new website also integrates user-generated content from various social media sites such as Facebook and YouTube.

Centenary welcomed the Class of 2015 in August.

Admissions On the Rise Admissions at Centenary are on the rise. Freshmen applications for 2011– 2012 increased nearly 17 percent over the previous year.

Additionally, the Class of 2015 enrolled 290 members, a 10 percent increase over 2010.

Classes for the new academic year began August 31, 2011.

“I can only anticipate that we will see more traffic,” Hooper added. “We’ve made the kinds of design and programming changes that benefit the College and our community.” An updated Alumni website is in process. To view the progress, go to alumni. centenarycollege.edu.

Centenary President Dr. Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite and College officials welcomed students and honored guests to the official opening of the new Edison Learning Center for the Centenary College School of Professional Studies on September 22, 2011. The new learning center is located at 333 Thornall Street in Edison, N.J., and features more spacious classrooms, a tutoring room and quiet lounge for adult students to meet, study and collaborate on group projects. The location also heightens the visibility of the program, which began in 1999 to meet the educational needs of busy adults.

Offering associate, bachelor’s and MBA degrees in an accelerated format that is conducive to the schedules of working professionals, the program has been available in Edison since 2005. Classes meet one night per week; students progress through the curriculum year-round and typically complete a degree in 24 months. To date, more than 2,000 Centenary alumni are graduates of the School of Professional Studies “This event was a wonderful opportunity to showcase our new learning center,” said Dr. Deirdre Letson, Dean for the Centenary College School of

Professional Studies. “Centenary College has had a presence in the Edison area for over six years, and this new location will enable us to continue to serve the educational needs of professionals in Central New Jersey.”

Centenary College School of Professional Studies classes are also offered on the College’s main campus in Hackettstown, a learning center in Parsippany and various corporate sites throughout New Jersey.

Centenary Biology Student Awarded Merck Research Grant In partnership with the Independent College Fund of New Jersey (ICFNJ), Merck has awarded Centenary Biology student Erika Chu ’13 a $6,250 research grant. The Merck Undergraduate Science Endeavors Program supports ICFNJ science majors who are planning to conduct their own independent scientific research.

Centenary has increased research opportunities for undergraduates across many academic disciplines in recent years. Chu’s research proposal involves the investigation of the non-native, oriental grass shrimp.

The project is of great interest to biologists since, according to Assistant Biology Professor Dr. Lauren Bergey, it addresses a global issue.

“I am positive that the competition for this undergraduate research scholarship was high,” Dr. Bergey noted. “Our goal is to publish Erika’s results and have her present at a national conference.”

When she’s not in the Biology lab, Chu, who hails from Galloway, N.J., plays Volleyball for the Lady Cyclones. With 182 career blocks, she became the program’s all-time blocks leader in September.

Centenary Professor Receives National Award Psi Chi, the international honor society in psychology, selects 12 faculty members from colleges and universities across the nation for a faculty advisor research grant award each year. This year, Centenary Assistant Professor Keith Morgen, Ph.D. of Psychology Keith Morgen, Ph.D., was one of them. Psi Chi awarded its Faculty Advisor Research Grant to Dr. Morgen for a study entitled “Addiction and Trauma in the Criminal Justice System: Parole Analyses.”

The Psi Chi Faculty Advisor Research Grants are competitive, peer-reviewed awards presented annually to support Psi Chi faculty advisors’ research.

Dr. Morgen’s $2,000 grant will support a project that is one of the first known examinations of the substance abuse/dependency and trauma issues of paroled older offenders over the age of 55.

It’s a Hit! WNTI launches summer concert series WNTI (91.9 FM) launched its inaugural summer concert series with a diverse roster of performers that included Citizens Band Radio, Gandalf Murphy, Ronnie Spector and more.

“There is little known about older offenders, so this research is important to understand what their needs are upon parole,” explained Dr. Morgen.

“Our findings will inform the counseling and other supportive services focused on their addiction and trauma recovery needs.”

This was the station’s first venture in producing its own summer festival. In previous seasons, WNTI acted as media sponsor for other summer music performances. The concerts were held at the Knowlton Township Lions Club Pavilion in Delaware on select Friday evenings in June, July and August.

The grant money also furthers research opportunities for Centenary’s Psychology majors. The project is the principle task for Dr. Morgen’s 2011–2012 substance abuse research team; four Psi Chi honor students will conduct the case record reviews, and with Dr. Morgen, plan to present the initial findings at the Eastern Psychological Association Conference in 2012.

“This is the first year WNTI has ever done a concert series, and it was a success,” said Melanie Thiel ’09/11, the station’s development director. “All the bands were a pleasure to work with and the patrons really enjoyed themselves. We are already starting to plan next year!”

Dr. Morgen is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in New Jersey and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). He is also the 2011 recipient of the Centenary College Distinguished Teaching Award.

WNTI reaches more than 52,000 listeners in six counties from the David and Carol Lackland Center at Centenary College.

Supporting Players Seven Centenary Theater students served on the production team for the comedic one-woman play “Bad Dates,” which played at the Sitnik Theater in the David and Carol Lackland Center last February. W

hen College President Dr. Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite promised to improve facilities and services that affect the day-to-day lives of Centenary students and alumni, the creation of a state-of-the-art career services center was her top priority.

Less than a year later, the new Career Center is proof positive of the President’s continuing efforts to impact the lives and success of current Centenary students and alumni.

Opened in May, the new Center in the Edward W. Seay Administration Building improves the visibility of this important service while providing students with a renovated space and top technology to research careers and conduct job searches. The space in the Seay Building became available following the dedication last year of the David and Carol Lackland Center. The new Career Center occupies an area that once housed the Cornelius

Walsh Board of Trustees’ Room and the President’s Dining Room.

“I really see Career Services as a huge selling point for Centenary,” said Michael Iris ’07, the Center’s director. “We’re now able to stress the fact that as a Centenary graduate, you have access to Career Services. It is so important in this day and age to support your job search.”

In addition to counseling students to help them solidify and work toward career goals, Career Services has assisted alumni from the 1970s through today, a relationship that helps to keep alumni connected with the College.

A key aim of the Center is to empower job seekers with the tools they need to make them stand out in today’s highly competitive job market. Centenary’s three-member Career Services staff provides individualized assistance with a broad spectrum of services including resumé-writing and review, online

job research and networking tools.

For job seekers today, mastering technology and online networking sites are important to remaining current in the evolving market. As a result, Career Services is equipped with two Mac workstations, as well as Skype, since many internships now require Skype interviews.

Career counselors also help students update their LinkedIn profiles. In addition, the Center has six iPads for use by both students and alumni.

“We want everyone to become more familiar with technology,” Iris explained. “We show them how they can use social media, apps and other technology tools to be more competitive and land job interviews.”

Doctoral candidate Jenelle Woodrup ’01/02 has already benefited from the amenities provided at the Center. With her eyes fixed on a career in higher education, Woodrup, who is pursuing her doctorate in Writing and Contemporary Studies at Drew University, has visited the new Career Center for assistance in editing her resumé and using online search engines. Woodrup earned her associate degree in Liberal Arts and a bachelor’s in English with a minor in Sociology from Centenary before studying for a master’s in English and Comparative Literature at Fairleigh Dickinson University. “(Iris) has been sending me links on things I might be qualified for,” said Woodrup, who has also received information from Iris on how to use LinkedIn for self-marketing. “I think the Center is great. When I walked in, I was astonished by the change in the department. It’s so much bigger and more modern.”

In another section of the Center, users can watch videos and access other career building tools on three flat-screen TVs in a comfortable area much like a living room. Video profiles of alumni are shown regularly and wall space showcases the work of current students.

The alumni profiles are particularly meaningful to students, according to Iris.

“Conducting your own job search can be stressful and difficult,” he noted. “The videos are informative and also can be inspiring. Students see that the work pays off and your career develops.”

The overall goal is to make Centenary students and alumni stand head and shoulders above the field. “Students and alumni leave the Career Center with new energy and new tools,” Iris said. “It gives them a new outlook. It is very satisfying when we help them in this way.”

Michael Iris ’07: Launching Careers Michael Iris ’07 is a real proponent of the small college experience. As a Centenary College student, he benefited from low student-teacher ratios, individual attention and opportunities for hands-on career training.

Recently named Director of Career Services at the College’s new Career Center, Iris looks forward to bringing the same amenities to today’s Centenary students.

“I love the small college setting,” said Iris, who majored in Business Administration and Marketing and Management at Centenary. “There’s just something you get here that you don’t get at the larger institutions.”

During his undergraduate career, a work-study opportunity in public relations and marketing piqued his interest in electronic communications, and he completed a master’s degree in Graphic Communications Technology Management at Kean University two years ago. It also solidified his resolve to pursue a career in higher education at a small campus.

As the social media marketing manager for Berkeley College, Iris helped to drive inquiries and admissions by managing all of Berkeley’s social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and Foursquare. In addition to providing him with an excellent background in the evolving field of social media, his stint at Berkeley opened his eyes to ways to integrate this technology into career planning.

Today, Iris and his staff count social media as an effective tool in the career counseling services they offer at Centenary. But while electronic communications are a must for today’s job seekers, Iris firmly believes it can’t replace the one-on-one contact that benefited him so much as an undergraduate.

“At the Career Center, our staff really provides individual attention,” he said. “When we’re talking about setting goals with students or alumni, we’re doing it one-on-one.

You really have a greater impact that way.”

Centenary’s summer barn raising attracted 165 volunteers and saved the College more than $200,000 in construction costs

W

hen Equine Studies Department Chair Kelly Munz looks at the newly restored Back Barn at the College’s Equestrian Center, she is filled with gratitude. “It looks fantastic,” she said of the barn, which houses 12 horses, as well as a residential apartment for the facilities manager and staff who care for the horses 24/7. “I can’t even believe we did it.”

“We” is a group of 165 dedicated volunteers comprised of Centenary faculty, staff, trustees, students and their families, as well as community members and construction managers from Morris Habitat for Humanity, who toiled through the summer’s heat to build the new facility. The massive volunteer effort saved the College $200,000 in construction costs and demonstrated that donations of time and talent can go a long way in assisting with capital projects.

“I was really surprised at all of the community support we got,” said Simone Knaap ’96, the College’s Advancement Director of Special Projects.

“It renews your faith in people.”

Glenn and Laura Pabst, as well as their daughter Jessica ’13, an Equine Studies major, worked on the project four days a week for most of the summer.

“It was great to see all of the volunteers working together to benefit the whole Equine Department,” said Laura.

Centenary Trustee Jim Salerno manned a tractor to assist with the project. “This was a community effort.

They came out in droves,” said Salerno, who had never driven a tractor before. “To see something like this come through for the benefit of Centenary and the students, as well as the satisfaction of the The Centenarian 9 volunteers, was extraordinary.”

ADVANCING CENTENARY

The 2011 Centenary College Scholarship Gala Changing Lives that Change Our World Thanks to the generosity of many Centenary alumni and friends, the dream of higher education remains possible for the College’s scholarship recipients. The College held its Scholarship Gala on June 21, 2011, and raised approximately $150,000 to support student scholarships. Since its inception, the Gala has raised over $2 million for the Centenary College Scholarship Fund.

The Gala’s theme, “Changing Lives That Change Our World,” brought to life the numerous ways that Centenary transforms lives. In 2010–2011, more than $12.5 million from the institution’s annual budget was awarded in financial aid to full-time undergraduate students.

“My scholarship allowed me to change the path of my family, give hope to those whose life paths are full of similar obstacles and challenges, and show that, with perseverance and faith, you can achieve any goal set before you,” said Amy Malinda Vadala ’11.

This year also marked the first time the annual event was held in the David and Carol Lackland Center. Raymond Nisivoccia,

founding partner of Nisivoccia, LLP, a regional accounting and advisory firm and member of the Centenary College Board of Trustees, served as Chair and Master of Ceremonies. The College also awarded its prestigious Gold Dome Award to alumna Doll Spach Siegel ’59 and Trustee Jim Salerno.

In keeping with Centenary’s longstanding tradition of service, the Gold Dome Award recognizes individuals or organizations that advance the mission of the College and work for the betterment of communities.

Siegel is a dedicated Centenary volunteer who served as co-chair of the Cornelius Walsh Society, which represents the College’s most generous benefactors, and is the former chair of the President’s Circle. She and her husband, M. Alden Siegel (who also serves as a Centenary College Trustee), are passionate and steadfast supporters of the College’s mission to change lives.

Salerno, the owner and former president of Jim Salerno Buick and GMC, is a Centenary College Trustee. A longtime supporter of the College’s nationally recognized Equine Studies program, Salerno also spearheaded the recent volunteer restoration of the Back Barn at the Equestrian Center.

Other Gala highlights included a Silent Auction held by the Alumni Association Executive Board (AAEB) and “Your Journey Through Golden Years,” a trivia and history game about Centenary College.

• When we sought volunteers to help us restore a new Back Barn for our nationally recognized Equine Studies program, more than 160 people turned out from all walks of life, from Centenary students and their family members, faculty, staff and trustees, as well as individuals and corporations from the Hackettstown area. Their “sweat equity” saved the College more than $200,000 in construction costs.

Common Ground Shunzo Horikawa ’03 faced an enormous challenge when he arrived at Centenary College in the summer of 1999. Speaking little English, the native of Japan participated in the College’s Summer Culture and Language The Horikawa family Program to prepare for life at an American college.

For 17 years, Centenary’s innovative program has helped hundreds of college students from Korea, China, Taiwan, Japan and other countries succeed in higher education. Many, like Horikawa, opt to continue their studies at Centenary.

“It was a wake-up call for me because at first my English level was extremely low,” recalled Horikawa. “I was not able to communicate with anyone.”

Horikawa soon found a universal language that immediately won him friends: soccer.

Most evenings he joined the members of the Cyclones Men’s Soccer team in the gym to kick the ball around. “It was an opportunity to interact because English is not necessary to play soccer,” he said.

With extra help from the summer program’s staffers, as well as the individual attention he received from professors, Horikawa thrived at Centenary. He juggled a full course load and played Men’s Soccer and Baseball, as well as serving as a Resident Assistant.

While his English improved greatly, Horikawa also knew that he needed to work harder than most students to catch up. To compensate, he would tape lectures and then replay them over and over, sometimes until 3 a.m.

Horikawa double-majored in Business Management and Marketing. He now works as manager of food service sales and new account management for Japanese-based House Foods America Corporation in California.

Today, he credits Centenary with helping him to launch his career, as well as providing the conduit to meet his wife, Rebecca Miko Horikawa ’03. The couple has two children, Emma and Skyler. “Centenary motivated me to go beyond what I thought I could do,” said Horikawa, who met with summer language students last summer. “I try to give them motivation because I understand how they are feeling.”

She Oughta Be in Pictures Susan Sodtalbers ’01 is not used to being in the spotlight. The first-grade teacher at Rutgers Preparatory School in Somerset, N.J., is more comfortable in front of a classroom of 6-year-olds than in the public eye.

Susan Sodtalbers ’01 So she was shocked last summer when a friend called to say her photo was featured in an ad for the school in The Black River Journal.

“I was really surprised,” she recalled. “It felt nice to know that friends saw me in the magazine. It was a little spotlight for a few minutes.” Sodtalbers grew up on her family’s farm in Warren County, just a stone’s throw from Centenary. As a Cyclone, she played Women’s Soccer and earned Academic AllAmerican honors in Women’s Basketball. An athlete to this day, she has completed three marathons, six half-marathons and dozens of shorter races.

“Taking part in Centenary athletics was a great experience.” said Sodtalbers. “The discipline and time management helped prepare me for life after college.”

The former Cyclone star has carried her passion for fitness into her professional career. She is currently running an afterschool program that helps keep students fit.

“It’s a marathon stretched over the course of 10 weeks,” said Sodtalbers. “I’m glad that I can educate and share my passion with the children.”

The Centenary alumna majored in Business Management with a minor in Sports Management, but her heart was always in teaching. As an undergraduate, Sodtalbers arranged her schedule so she could begin substitute teaching before graduation.

“I was very fortunate to set up my class schedule so I could substitute. I think something like that can only take place at a school like Centenary,” said Sodtalbers.

Centenary’s “Stellar” Student Adult and Professional Programs student works with NASA All Centenary Mary-Catherine Snook ’12 students reach for the stars, and a few even work with them.

When Mary-Catherine Snook ’12 enrolled in the Centenary College School of Professional Studies to study Business Administration, she never imagined that she would one day work with NASA scientists.

Snook, a resident of Bridgewater, N.J., and a Senior Administrative Assistant at Johnson & Johnson, was one of 26 Phi Theta Kappa members in the nation chosen for NASA’s National Community College Aerospace (NCAS) program. As a part of the program, she will travel to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. Snook and her peers will work together to develop a prototype vehicle to roam Mars.

She was made aware of the opportunities offered by Centenary’s program through her current position.“Johnson & Johnson partnered with Centenary and offered blended courses,” said Snook. “The professors came and lectured at our offices and classes were available online.”

To be chosen for the NCAS program, students must first complete a meticulous, eight-week course on the design of a space mission. A grade of 94 percent is required, as well as an application and letters of recommendation. Snook scored a 96 percent, although she was hesitant about submitting an application to the program. “I carried it around in my bag for two weeks,” she said. “But a week before the due date, my husband told me that I’d be crazy to pass it up.”

Snook credits her upcoming scientific endeavor with her involvement as a Centenary College School of Professional Studies student.

“First of all, I would have never known about the program if I hadn’t been at Centenary,” said Snook. “Being a Centenary student gave me the determination, the skills and the confidence to pursue this program. Its courses have helped at my current job and continue to influence my everyday life.”

The Independent College Fund of New Jersey Centenary College continues to benefit from generous corporate and foundation support given through the Independent College Fund of New Jersey. Begun in 1953, the Fund makes a single, united annual request to corporations and foundations on behalf of the 14 member colleges. For 56 years, the Fund has continued to secure corporate financial support for the State’s independent colleges and to promote a greater understanding of the importance of maintaining the opportunity for choice between public and private education.

The Independent College Fund of New Jersey represents all of the State’s fully accredited, privately controlled colleges and universities, except those that are engaged primarily in religious studies.

The following donors contributed to the Fund in calendar year 2010. Most gifts are allocated by formula although a number are designated to specific institutions. Support in 2010 for independent higher education in New Jersey through the Fund totaled $1,250,024.93.

Setting an Example sophomore year at Middletown North High School, stepped up the effort and convinced friends and classmates to join the challenge.

The task certainly had its hurdles. “People tend to get squeamish when you ask them to donate blood,” said Forte. “I don’t like needles,” was a response Forte heard a lot, but she persisted and informed prospective donors about the great need for blood in the community.

Sierra Forte ’15 and Rebecca Camp ’15 are committed to helping others, but also passionate about getting students involved in support of a good cause. In other words, these two first-year students are fitting right in at Centenary College.

“I really like the school,” said Forte after a busy first week of moving in, classes and the all-day volunteer event for first-year students Community Plunge.

Since Forte’s mother, Theadora Edwards-Forte ’86, is an alumna, the College was already on her radar. “I knew I wanted to go to college in New Jersey and I just thought that Centenary was the best option for me,” Forte added.

Forte and Camp are the first recipients of the Centenary Community Service Scholarship, a financial award given to students who have demonstrated a substantial, ongoing commitment to the values of social responsibility through a high level of community service or volunteer activities during their high school years.

In 2010–2011, WRAT (95.9FM), a radio station in the Greater Media New Jersey Network, and the Central Jersey Blood Center (CJBC) challenged high school students from Ocean and Monmouth counties to raise the most pints of blood for the annual Blood Drive Challenge. Forte, who had consistently donated to the blood drive since her

Camp’s method of choice was her sense of humor.

Her campaign took place in the high school cafeteria, where her jokes lured peers to the cause.

By the time the blood drive concluded, Forte and Camp recruited a significant number of donors, and their efforts were recognized by WRAT and CJBC. “It’s so important to get the kids donating and thinking about donating blood,” said Sharlatte Ragan, the program administrator for the Blood Center. “It’s so important as we move on into the future. Rebecca Camp and Sierra Forte are two young women who will set an example for other students in classes below them; and hopefully, will spread the word to new friends and classmates in the next phases of their lives.”

For their efforts, Centenary College, a co-sponsor of the annual Blood Drive Challenge, awarded a $2,000 scholarship to both women. Camp, a midfielder/forward for the Cyclones Soccer team, was both surprised and relieved when she heard the news.

“I had no idea about the award. It was mindboggling, and I was shocked,” said Camp. “I had already committed to Centenary, but I was financially pressed, and it took some weight off.”

Forte, an English major and aspiring writer, believes the service-minded mission of Centenary is a good fit for students intent on making a difference. “I feel good about being able to help somebody. It’s important to give back to your community.”
