AWARDS YEARBOOK 2014

ABOUT THE AWARDS

Established in 2006, the prestigious CEDIA Awards celebrate excellence in home technology design, installation and integration across Region 1 (the UK, Europe, Africa, the CIS, the Middle East, India and Pakistan). Setting the standard for CEDIA Home Technology Professional members across CEDIA Region 1, these stunning projects are the crème de la crème of smart home installations. This year’s scheme saw over 150 submissions from more than 16 countries, all competing for the top prizes in 2014. The battle to win a prestigious CEDIA Awards accolade has never been tougher. Each installation category is judged by an expert panel drawn from the worlds of architecture, interiors, property, IT, smart home journalism and, of course, custom installation to ensure the highest standards of scrutiny for each and every entry.

A first round of technical judging is complemented by a final rigorous assessment to determine the category winners. As well as the need to be integrated and beautifully concealed with the interior, important factors also considered include compliance with industry best practice, the imaginative and appropriate design and use of technology, impeccably designed and installed racks, value for money as well as that all important ‘wow’ factor.

Cornflake

The client’s brief was to create a stunning media room within a minimalistic glass-box. With two floor-to-ceiling glass walls and a third wall providing access to the large glass humidor, the room layout provided little camouflage for hiding audio-visual kit. To overcome these problems, Cornflake mounted a Samsung 55˝ ES8000 TV on an electric motor, capable of swivelling to face the viewer wherever they are seated. The issue of eliminating screen glare and darkening the bright sunny room was addressed by installing a dual-action blinds and lighting circuit. The Lutroncontrolled system is pre-set with four different scenes to cover various daytime

and evening viewing options. Sound is provided by a sleek and designfitting small Leon Custom LCR soundbar speaker with a pair of B&W CCM684 speakers neatly and subtly plastered out of sight in the ceiling. The sub channel is provided by a B&W PV1D subwoofer. Finally, as the only solid wall which could be used to hang a TV on was filled by bookcases and a door frame, Cornflake commissioned an innovative solution; a bespoke extending electric TV bracket. Fitted above the door it ensures that the plant room door - hidden behind a mock bookcase - can be used totally unhindered.

BrownHen Solutions

BrownHen Solutions transformed an underground vault into a multi-purpose media room where audio and video can be enjoyed by the whole family. The solution had to be able to make use of the client’s existing AV equipment, integrate with the multi-room audio system which was installed in the house and allow for a level of futureproofing. The installer designed, built and installed handcrafted bespoke cabinets to accommodate the AV equipment and provide storage. By using an iterative 3D visualisation process, the client was able to interact and visualise designs. Three in-wall Speakercraft speakers, a subwoofer and media streaming end point were installed and commissioned to complete the project.

Grahams Hi-Fi

This media room, which is located in the basement floor of a luxury Ski Chalet in Austria, is part of a whole integrated home and includes a large screen TV with full surround sound, access to multichannel TV for international guests, access to the central system sources which includes Kaleidescape, Sky receivers and security camera monitoring. With guests regularly visiting the chalet, the owner requested that all equipment needed to be hidden. A joinery unit was designed to house the rack and other technical equipment. High quality speakers, which integrate with the whole house music system, subwoofer and Panasonic plasma TV were installed neatly within the joinery. Remote power management using ISOL-8 power distribution was used for the AV rack as ventilation is important in this basement project.

Living

The new media room can be transformed from a quiet reading room to a music venue to the ultimate cinematic escape - all at the touch of a button. The client wanted the biggest projector screen size possible. This led to Living installing a 106˝ acoustic transparent screen, sat back in a recess to hide the in-wall centre and subwoofer, leaving the front wall looking as clean as possible. The installers pre-set scenes through RTI control. When the client selects the movie scene, the projector warms up, black out blinds close, the lights dim down to a low level and the amps switch on to the correct input.

Philharmonic Audio Visual

Philharmonic Audio Visual was enlisted to install a 21st century whole home AV system into this Victorian property. A key element of the project was transforming the former dining space into a media room where excellent audio and visual performance was instrumental. To achieve both high performance sound and low visual impact, Philharmonic Audio Visual proposed Artcoustic speakers. The 5.1 surround system was complemented by an Artcoustic bespoke C-2 SL centre speaker to match the width of the TV, two Modular SL speakers and a Panel Sub SL Duo. An Arcam AVR600 receiver was specified to power the speakers as its two-stage amplifier circuitry was the perfect partner for the high

sensitivity of the Artcoustic speakers. This combination means that, even when running at reference level, the amplifier is operating in its high quality Class A stage, ensuring that the average heat dissipation is low. This was key for this project as the AVR was located within the cabinetry with limited cooling options.

To ensure the video performance was of an equally high quality, an 8000 series 65˝ Samsung TV was installed. The slim, crisp lines of the bezel were a great match to the sharp edges of the Artcoustic speakers, and Philharmonic Audio Visual’s millimetre-perfect installation precisely aligned the top of the screen and the speakers – no mean feat in a period property where the walls often present a challenge.

Bespoke Home Cinemas

Starting this project at the build stage, Bespoke Home Cinemas worked with the air conditioning company to ensure a whole house ducted HVAC system was installed. The home cinema is controlled remotely via the Rako ‘light switches’ which fire up the projector, close the curtains, dim the lights and turn on the TV. An alarm sensor was incorporated into the Control4 system via an Extra Vegetables driver to allow occupancy sensing, thus the room would automatically shut down if it was left unattended for a period of time. A halo box was built to incorporate the projector, surround speakers, downlights and RGB LED up-lighting. This allowed the technology to be hidden out of sight, not disrupting the interior design.

Piece of the Action // INSTALLER

Bespoke Home Cinemas

Bespoke Home Cinemas was given the task of designing and installing a media room into a pre-configured cinema room without undertaking any building work, plastering or disruption to the décor. The biggest challenge was that no cables had been installed. The installers removed light fittings and used an imported US tool, MagNePull, to pull cables through the void, using high powered magnets and rollers. Following the brief, Bespoke Home Cinemas installed a 3m width 16:9 acoustic screen. To accommodate the speakers behind the screen, a stud wall was built over the existing storage cabinetry. Resin anchor studs were fitted directly to the concrete cast ceiling to enable a Future Automation micrometre bracket to be fitted.

ET Home Cinema

ET Home Cinema has transformed a relatively small games room into a stunning home cinema which delivers from all angles. The size of the room was challenging when trying to create the perfect surround sound experience. Monitor Audio CFX speakers were configured in Dipole mode and installed at the back of the room to create an enveloping surround experience. A Velodyne SPL-800 subwoofer delivers the required base for the cubic area of the room. The installers incorporated a bulkhead structure and rack area at the entrance of the room. This is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also functional as a bulkhead houses the projector,

CFX ceiling speakers and LED downlights. By curving the bulkhead from each side wall it created the illusion of the room being wider than it is. The curves complement the wall panels and ceiling centre panel and with just the projector lens visible, the room has a real cinema feel. The Control4 lighting system was designed to integrate with various interfaces such as the iPad, in-wall 6 button keypads and Control4 dedicated SR250 remote control. In addition, a conventional 3-way light switch, located at the entrance, is programmed to the customer’s exact requirements.

Finite Solutions

Finite Solutions faced a tough brief; to create a unique and truly immersive big screen experience in the basement. A key requirement was that the cinema screen needed to be as big as possible for the ultimate ‘wow’ factor. Image quality was hugely important as the system would be used by the family for watching movies, quality TV series and sporting events. The installer opted for a subtle electric drop down screen to allow access to the front wall storage. A high quality 3.3m wide tab tension model from Screen Research’s ‘Supreme 2’ range was chosen. The JVC DLA-X95 projector was specified to complete the display product mix; together these products deliver fabulous image quality and 3D capability. The front three speakers, subwoofer and a Middle Atlantic ‘Pull Twist’ style rack were built into the front

wall joinery. These are subtly disguised behind speaker fabric and give the front wall a unique look when the screen is raised. The screen is also acoustically transparent as it covers the speakers when it is dropped.

To ensure the system was simple to use, Finite Solutions added a URC universal touchscreen to control all aspects of the system. Careful consideration was given to the lighting design. Star capsule lamp fittings were dotted across the ceiling to create an interesting lighting effect. The light circuits and the skylight blackout blinds, are controlled from two Lutron Grafik Eyes allowing several pre-programmed lighting scenes to be easily accessed and adjusted from the cinema remote or the wall keypad.

A solution which integrates everything - tech, architecture and great interior design

James & Giles The concealment of the technology was extremely important in this open plan house. The James & Giles solution made use of a ‘chimney’ running through the core of the home which provided the ideal location for the service run of cabling and HVAC components, as well as providing handy storage space for the family. In the main living space this central core houses a discretely positioned flat screen TV, and behind a detachable acrylic panel, a Leon soundbar, which blends with the panels

when not in use. The screen is future-proofed, in that upcoming Panasonic models are guaranteed to fit the current frame size if the family opt to upgrade. The downstairs family media room features a projector, facing the discrete white wall ‘screen’, and accesses Blu-ray, Sky and various networked audio sources. The room is also used for entertaining, parties and live music, with its integral bar area, drum kit and piano. The client can operate all the sub-systems in the house from Control4 touchscreens or the iPad. Grahams Hi-Fi The property, which would be available for rentals, needed to be of very high standard, fully automated and easy to use. It required all the latest technology and entertainment, robust and reliable internet, network and entertainment throughout. Because of the clientele, support and monitoring for the technology was vital. Grahams Hi-Fi provided its usual, proven and reliable solution for whole house which centred around a properly designed and engineered data network. This has become so crucial for all the home systems that it is now often the “starting point” for project design. The

The house contains nine TV sets, a dedicated cinema room and two additional media rooms. It was vital that all of the systems work in the same way as the chalet would be occupied by different guests each week. The control system was based on Control4 which was integrated with Sonos for the 16 zones of music. Sonos was specified as it was considered that many of the people renting the property may already have these in their homes and have the apps on their tablets and mobile phones. Sonos also integrates well with Control4 and Lutron so Grahams Hi-Fi was able to do some very powerful things in the background to make the system easier to use.

This London project pushed the level of automation to the limits

SMC was tasked with the job to maximise convenience, entertainment, security and energy savings. The project required the highest level of automation, far greater than normally seen. Each window and door includes five levels of treatment; automated curtains, blinds, doors/ windows, shutters and awnings. The user interface alone was a particular challenge to ensure intuitive use. The solution was provided using Crestron touchscreens and Lutron SeeTouch keypads. The house includes 24 zones of audio and 8 zones of video. The audio library had to be the same across the client's other properties and this was achieved using iTunes as the primary

database and using iMatch. Playout of audio is via Sonos and Sire interface which allows the client to select music from the Crestron touchscreens and iPads/iPhones. Lutron HomeWorks QS provides the primary control of lighting and blinds/curtains throughout the property. There are 180 circuits of light and over 84 window treatments to control. Lutron also manages the operation of six water features in the garden. The security systems consist of an NSI Grade 3, intruder alarm giving full perimeter protection around the property and motion detection within. The first saw Sensory International upgrade the network infrastructure, commission the VSAT and provide new Crestron overlays for the requested roaming iPad control. Phase two was the upgrade of the HDMI video distribution system for 86 sources over 24 independent zones and upgrade and enhance all AV systems. There was also a requirement for a discreet back-to-back external TV system. One of the biggest tasks was to dismantle the AV racks, re-cable and install new hardware. Sensory International had to adapt its designs to accommodate unexpected issues with the existing system and infrastructure, to fully integrate the new components without losing any original functionality.

Archimedia The installed system was built around Savant media distribution and control. The majority of equipment was centralised due to extreme space constraints on a yacht of this size. The client requested control using iPads as it was felt that this enhances the image of Gulfcraft only using the latest technologies. To ensure that the experience with iPads is as robust as possible, a dual-band Ruckus wireless network was installed using a Ruckus Zone Controller in the rack and connected to carefully placed access points throughout the yacht. Even though the Savant system is extremely comprehensive, it is flexible to accept requests by the future purchaser of the yacht.

then further customised to the homeowners individual requirements.

The latest Crestron home automation system provides simplicity and is easy to use. Each apartment is controllable room-by-room using touchscreens and remote controls. The design concept ensured all complications and unnecessary controls were removed, leaving behind a clean touch panel design with intuitive and easy to understand settings.

The Lansbury provides all residents with the ultimate in control - with the touch of a button, you can set everything you want in each room, customised to your personal preferences, including climate, lighting, blinds, video entry, intercom, concierge facilities, movies, music and CCTV. Specific modes were programmed for each apartment, features such as Welcome Home Mode and Hibernation Mode.

Through intelligent design and programming it was possible to reduce many services down to four presets: high, medium, low and off with deeper control provided by a sub-page if required. This concept was applied to heating, cooling, lighting and audio levels throughout,

In the Concierge area, The Next Level designed a system that allows maintenance for each of the apartments to be done without having to access the apartments. Each resident is also able to view and speak to the Concierge without having to leave the comfort of their home.

With the relatively tight budget and the client wishing to use high-end names such as Lutron and Crestron, careful consideration was given to hardware selection to create a benchmark specification that the client could use on other schemes. The system integrates AV, lighting, blind and window control and HVAC. The show apartments were programmed so that a single press of the ‘Welcome’ button on the front door keypad, switched all of the lights on to their most dramatic scene, and started off a chilled playlist of music in the bedrooms and terrace, while a Blu-ray player started in the open plan living space. Where in-wall and in-ceiling speakers were feasible, the grilles were selected to match architectural features. All heating and cooling is integrated onto the Crestron iPad app to allow easy control and remote access via the net.

Project 1047

Sona Projects was commissioned to design and install an integrated technology solution for a very large new build property in Cheshire.

// INSTALLER

Sona Projects Ltd

In order to support this installation, a professional equipment racking system was installed within a generous second floor comms room. As the room was easily accessible the solution had to be aesthetically discrete and ‘nice to look at’ but provide adequate containment, power distribution, cable management and on-going service access. The project was designed with separate cable termination and main equipment racks so that the cable infrastructure could be completed, installed and tested whilst the main equipment racks were built and configured off site. This system also means that should the client ever move home, the system can be simply ‘unplugged’ from the house network and transported to their new home. Every data and audio video cable throughout this 16,000+ sq. ft property is cabled back to the termination panels and presented through a combination of RJ45, phoenix and f-type connectors.

A further two Lutron HomeWorks QS DIN module panels housed the separate lighting control system. Special custom-made cable trays were mounted between the free-standing racks to create an easy route for the cables to run between the racks and ease space pressures. The brief for this whole house property was to install a system which integrates lighting and AV and is controlled via simple to use wall keypads and a control system that could be operated via the iPad.

Designed from the initial client brief, this project started with one rack and patch panel in a cupboard, and through continuous revisions and client requests ended up with five full sized racks and a dedicated room with its own air conditioning split system.

3LOGIC designed a rack layout which allowed all equipment to be hidden out of sight, a key requirement from the client. The room in which racks are placed was equipped with a technical floor which allowed easy wiring. Two air conditioning units were installed to keep the temperature low in the room.

The first rack houses three Control4 processors, Just Add Power video matrix equipment and sources – four Apple TVs, six Sky boxes and some power management equipment. The second includes the equipment for the three surround sound zones. The third AV rack stores the CCTV equipment and a video monitor.

The installers provided bespoke speakers which were tailored to the available space and the client’s requirements. It adapted a premium Blu-ray player to make it concealable in the joinery and fully integrated with the control system. The Blu-ray player required the use of a “robotic finger” in the form of a solenoid to push the eject button. This was held in the

exact right place to ensure it always made contact when triggered. A 12v DC power supply activates the solenoid when a relay from Savant was closed. A specially sourced slotted Blu-ray drive was used and secured into the shelf so that the slot was centred in its front. The shelf had to be specially designed to ensure it fulfilled the criteria.

Andrew Lucas Limited

This winning project was described by the judges as an interesting lighting scheme which highlights the three defining features – a library wall, the ceiling and two jewel boxes. Due to the complex nature of the lighting system and the requirement to integrate with several other elements, including 50 motorised shades, Lutron HomeWorks QS was specified. In order to satisfy the criteria for discreet and architecturally sympathetic control keypads, Lutron-compatible TruFig faceplates were employed throughout.

The eight-metre high library wall incorporated cubby holes with pin spotlights to illuminate artwork positioned within. A plinth containing LED strips was set forward of the shelves, causing the whole wall to softly glow. The ceiling was accentuated by LED feature lighting, while the two jewel boxes contained RGB panels enabling a range of lighting schemes. Eighty two lighting circuits and 136 DMX channels were installed in this apartment. The lighting enclosures are discreetly recessed behind mirrors and doors in keeping with the client’s wish for a clean, minimal finish.

Improved power management technology cuts annual energy bills by nearly 80%.

MC2 T2000 amplifiers Primare surround amplifier Proprietary network controller

The client sought to bring this historic property into the 21st century with an integrated and distributed audio-visual, security, data networking and communications system. The client challenged Face to Face Digital to create an easy to access and simple to use control solution which could help manage the energy consumption much more efficiently and deliver a substantial cut in running costs. The installer designed and developed a completely bespoke, demand-based energy management system, encompassing sophisticated heating and external lighting control and management of electronic systems power consumption.

The control system is built using North Integrator, a multi-protocol IP-enabled building services controller. Using the built-in ObServer software within these controllers, a custom cause and effect logic strategy, complete with data logging, calendar and timer functions for the heating system was provided. The control system automatically manages zone valve operation throughout the property, controlling heat output from a complex mix of ancient cast iron radiators, trench heating and new underfloor heating. Face to Face Digital also developed a custom colour-coded interface for the system, complete with eco-control functionality which the client is able to access, monitor and adjust exclusively via his iPhone, iPad or PC.

Merit LILIN UK Davy Avenue, Knowhill, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, MK5 8NB, UK +44 (0)870 120 5550 www.lilin.co.uk

The one-day course introduces users to LILIN products and allows them to discover their multiple benefits. LILIN’s Product Trainer demonstrates and educates installers in a practical session that includes a detailed look at camera configuration, features and camera selection. Also covered is the operation and installation of the LILIN NVR. This course takes a practical hands-on approach to IP Video training. It is designed to demystify IP Video Security Systems and help users win new business.

Amina Invisible Loudspeakers are installed specifically to be heard and not seen. Although not physically difficult to install, Amina has made its training mandatory with the aim of preventing avoidable errors and to enable installers to provide a blemish free, high quality result, for their end customers. The course provides the information to support this. Based on feedback received, Amina has built an installation board showing a step by step guide on how to complete an installation which is used as the basis of the final stage of the training. Potential pitfalls are explored with the aim of enabling installers to assimilate as much knowledge as possible gained from the 10,000’s of installs and thus avoid common mistakes.

Crestron’s Digital Media Certification course includes 4K training that fully equips installers for the 4K era ahead. The faster signal speeds associated with 4K present a number of new system design and engineering challenges for custom installers. The course looks at some of these challenges including cable length, the importance of downscaling, mismatched resolution and frame rates, and incompatibility between sources and displays. The purpose of the course is to prepare students for the world of digital video and expand their knowledge to include the practical application of the wider range of Crestron Digital Media products.

THE MOVIE

The Seve movie pays tribute to the man behind the shot-making and on-course bravado, profiling his remarkable rag-to-riches story and emergence as a global sporting icon before his untimely death. Seve is introduced to viewers at the age of six when he first started creating shots on the beach near his home in Padreña. A talented young Spanish golfer plays the part of ‘Young Seve’ with conviction and authenticity, and portrays Seve’s rise to the professional ranks in his late-teens. From this point the film draws on archive footage (from the R&A, Ryder Cup, The Masters and European Tour) in tandem with illuminating interviews, as Seve rises to World #1 and becomes a multiple Major Champion.
