2016 ANNUAL REPORT >> PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: MICHAEL GRANDINETTI Year end is always a time to reflect upon the accomplishments of the concluding year and set goals for the next. Not unlike other years, we entered 2016 emphasizing membership retention and growth. Our plan was to do this through a combination of technology and personal contact. While we experienced a slight decrease in our total membership, we were successful in deploying our new and extremely functional website. Equally important, we developed an elevator pitch and presentation materials to assist our directors in outlining the benefits of membership. Happily, several directors put these materials to good use. Secondly, because our area of greatest membership growth is in the public sector, we added some new, key members to the Public Golf Committee, met more often and were extremely encouraged by the response. Our third goal was to enhance the image of CDGA golf events. This was partially accomplished by assigning at least two of our most well-trained and experienced officials to these tournaments. Additionally, we placed a larger emphasis on recognition of the winners, both at the tournament sites and in our print and electronic media. Moreover we made extensive use of our online scoring capabilities that were first deployed in 2015. I am happy to report that the response from our competitors was extremely positive. Three major initiatives with the USGA continued to evolve in 2016. The first direct impact was the deployment of a world-

wide handicap system by the USGA and the R&A. The CDGA will play an important role in the implementation process of this system in the years to come. Secondly, we received more details regarding the restructuring of the relationship between the USGA and state and regional golf associations. Actually the CDGA, through our Executive Director, is playing an integral role in redefining the partnership. One result of this new program was the decision by the Southern Illinois Golf Association to affiliate with the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association based in St. Louis. While this move caused some disappointment, the golfers in southern Illinois will continue to receive the benefits of USGA support. Finally, it will be interesting to ascertain what the ”simplification” of the rules of golf, tentatively slated for 2018, will actually entail. For 2017, we will continue to emphasize communication with our members. Providing information on a regular basis is critical to both retention and growth. Staff is currently working on a new marketing plan. Our directors will be an integral part of both the development and the delivery of this program. We will also look to further strengthen our relationship with the “public golfer” with the expectation of more growth in this segment. Lastly, we will maintain our major role with the USGA regarding the on-going initiatives. I would personally like to thank all of our directors and staff for your efforts and support throughout 2016, and I eagerly look forward to working with each of you in 2017. Michael Grandinetti CDGA President

COMPETITIONS

More than 1,900 individuals participated in championships, events and qualifiers ran by the CDGA. The CDGA administered 11 association and Illinois state championships in 2016, with more than 1,900 golfers participating. Comprised within those championships was eight events featuring qualifying. The Association also hosted 17 USGA qualifiers. The crown jewel of the championship season, the 86th Illinois State Amateur Championship at St. Charles Country Club, was won handily by Northbrook’s Nick Hardy. The University of Illinois junior shattered many State Am records en route to a 28-under par 260, good enough for a 10-shot victory over two-time champion Tee-K Kelly.

Championship and the CDGA Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championship. The senior event was won by the team of Tom Kearfott and Tim Sheppard, while Michael Natale and Steve Sawtell claimed the full amateur event. Todd Mitchell made a late season charge, winning the Illinois State Mid-Amateur for a record fifth time and advancing to match play at the U.S. Mid-Amateur to eclipse 2015 Player of the Year Nick Hardy’s point total and win the CDGA Player of the Year award for a fourth time. On consistent form in several CDGA and Illinois State championships, Chadd Slutzky of Deer Park secured third place in the standings. With the performance of “rookie” senior Tim Sheppard early in the season—a victory at the CDGA Senior Four-Ball and steady performances at the CDGA Senior and Illinois State Mid-Amateur—it appeared Dave Ryan’s seven-year run of Player of the Year awards (Senior 2009-11 and 2013-15; CDGA in 2012) would come to an end. However, a magical September extended Ryan’s string to eight years, earning his seventh CDGA Senior Player of the Year, making an even 10 overall (Ryan won the defunct Central Illinois Player of the Year award in 1998 and 2000).

Nick Hardy won the Illinois State Amateur in record-breaking fashion

In the 97th CDGA Amateur Championship at Calumet Country Club, it was the revenge of the mid-amateur golfer, as Andrew Price of Lake Bluff topped Bloomington’s Todd Mitchell 4 and 3 in the 36-hole final match. Three of the championship’s semifinalists and nine of the 16 match play qualifiers came from the 25 and older set in an event that has been dominated by collegiate players in recent years. The curtain was raised on a pair of new Association championships in 2016, the CDGA Amateur Four-Ball

Ryan started the “September to Remember” with a convincing nine-shot victory at the 30th Illinois State Senior Amateur Championship over Sheppard. It was a record fourth win for Ryan in the State Senior. Just a few days later, Ryan teed it up at the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship in St. Louis, where after 36 holes of stroke play and a 64-player match play bracket, he earned a 2-up victory, sealing his Senior Player of the Year award in the process, as Sheppard bowed out after advancing to match play as well. Ryan’s USGA championship was the first for a CDGA golfer since Brad Benjamin won the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in 2009.

MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS The CDGA Corporate Partner program featured more than 60 organizations, with

at the highest tier. A keystone of CDGA membership and the member benefits provided to golfers in the District is the Marketing and Communications program of the Association. In 2016, the CDGA partnered with more than 60 organizations to provide numerous added incentives for golfers to become members. Partners such as Athletico, Lincoln Motor Company and PepsiCo were all involved with the CDGA tournament program in 2016. Athletico provided complimentary stretching at several events for competitors, while Lincoln allowed golfers to learn more about their vehicles while earning money for the CDGA Foundation. As part of their partnership with the CDGA, PepsiCo provided more than 10,000 bottles of Gatorade and Aquafina for competitors at all major CDGA and Illinois State championships.

Golf Excursion. CDGA corporate partners also offered unique opportunities for information on maladies that may beset golfers with seminars co-hosted by Athletico and Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, with other marketing opportunities including discount codes from GolfNow, ticket offers for the John Deere Classic (the PGA TOUR’s only annual stop in the District) and special offers on Golfweek subscriptions. Nearly two dozen local courses also promoted their facilities with special offers to members, varying from a free bucket of range balls to free cart with a green fee. The execution of the member benefits and marketing program falls up on the shoulders of the Communications department. During the course of the year, this department is responsible for the production of six print magazines, four quarterly digital magazines and all emails distributed by the CDGA—a tally of 359 unique communications providing more than 3 million touchpoints with members. New in 2016, the CDGA debuted a responsive CDGA.org to provide a consistent member experience across all devices. The new site gives golfers a more robust experience on a mobile device than the previous iteration, with technology quickly moving towards mobile-first design standards. CDGA.org maintained nearly 10 million page views in 2016, with members regularly accessing the site for news and its membership management tools.

A new partnership with Pepsi featured activation at CDGA championships

Other partnerships included member rates for stay and play at Erin Hills, site of the 2017 U.S. Open Championship, and Pinehurst Resort, who hosted the 2016 CDGA Member Fall

While a majority of the CDGA membership utilizes CDGA.org as their primary means of accessing their membership, more than one-third of CDGA members now have the My CDGA smartphone app installed on a device or tablet, a growth of more than 25% over 2015. In 2017, with the redesign of CDGA. org, My CDGA users will have access to more information and the ability to do more within My CDGA.

TURFGRASS PROGRAM CDGA Turfgrass Program staff made more than

100

diagnostic visits to CDGA member clubs. The CDGA Turfgrass Program consisted of Dr. Ed Nangle in his fourth season with the Association and Ron Townsend in his third. The CDGA bid good luck to Dr. Nangle in September, as he accepted an assistant professor position at Ohio State University’s Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster, Ohio. Dr. Nangle provided a wealth of resources and knowledge for both local superintendents and the far-reaching turfgrass community and will continue to do so in Ohio.

Dr. Nangle and Townsend also communicated with District superintendents electronically. The Turfgrass Scouting Report, a weekly email containing information on local conditions and industry best practices, was distributed to more than 650 people from March through September. Dr. Nangle’s Twitter account, @TurfResearch, was increasingly active in front of its nearly 2,600 followers, while Townsend’s @CDGAresearchmgr account grew as well.

A rather dry start to the season provided excellent conditions for spring golf in the District. However, June and July saw record rainfall totals for much of the state, with some areas receiving more than double the average of rainfall for the month. These heavy rains, combined with high temperatures, allowed root disease to infect turf and caused issues for golf course superintendents. Turfgrass growing conditions were as difficult as they had been since 2012 and as a result, the expertise of Dr. Nangle and Townsend was relied upon heavily. The duo combined to make 100 course visits in 2016.

The CDGA Turfgrass Program continued to share and develop knowledge with the national and international turfgrass communities through avenues like: • North Shore Country Club hosted the University of Illinois’ regional academic conference, where Dr. Nangle and Townsend presented their trial research completed at the club. • Townsend gave an oral presentation at the American Society of Agronomy’s annual meeting in Phoenix about his master’s project. • Dr. Nangle presented in London to a Norwegian turfgrass association and also made talks in Iowa, Northern Indiana and Wisconsin. As Townsend continues to pursue his master’s at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Nangle’s position will be assumed by Dr. Jesse Benelli in January.

An unusually wet summer led to difficult growing conditions in the District

Benelli, who received his Bachelor’s degree from Pennsylvania State University and Master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee, has an educational background centered on turfgrass and plant sciences, with his graduate research focusing on plant physiology and turfgrass disease management. In addition to more than 15 years of experience in the turfgrass industry, Benelli has been published in more than two dozen peer-reviewed journals and also has coauthored a grant study from the USGA.

The CDGA Turfgrass Program is the only one in the nation operated by a state or regional golf association 8

Special Needs

Sunshine Through Golf Camps: This program continued to be the centerpiece of the Foundation’s programming for special needs. A total of 92 camps for 1,200 individuals were held throughout the District, with roughly 30 Blue Coats volunteering. Tournament Series: These events are designed to help individuals prepare for competing in the Special Olympics. Four events were held in 2016 at Odyssey Country Club, Rob Roy Golf Course, Sugar Creek Golf Course and Stony Creek Golf Course. Play With a Pro Days: Two events were held surrounding the Web.com Tour’s RustOleum Championship and LPGA’s UL International Crown. A new format for 2016 featured foursomes consisting of an individual with special needs, veteran, media member and pro. Dan Roan, Eric Ferguson, Peggy Kusinski and Tracy Butler were among the media participants.

Veterans

Veterans Golf Days: In conjunction with RevelationGolf, two Veterans Golf Days were held, one at Willow Glen Golf Club and another split between Cog Hill Golf & Country Club and the Three-Hole Sunshine Course at Midwest Golf House. These events spend time on skill development, golf etiquette and on-course time. Odyssey Golf Foundation: The CDGA Foundation formed a new partnership with the Odyssey Golf Foundation, which operates its golf course as a 501(c)(3) to benefit veterans. Approximately 600 vets enrolled in their programming were given CDGA memberships. Fore Our Veterans Golf Outing: This new scramble event was created through the partnership with Odyssey. Proceeds from the inaugural outing were split between the two Foundations and will continue to be shared in 2017 and beyond.

Youth

The Foundation expanded its charitable reach to youth by partnering with Youth on Course. • Founded by the Northern California Golf Association, Youth on Course subsidizes rounds for its age 6-18 members, ensuring that they can play for $5 or less. Youth on Course pays participating courses the difference between the $5 and their respective junior rates, allowing youths access to the game and courses a full tee sheet, future players and increased revenue. • The CDGA Foundation contracted 20 member clubs to implement the program. The CDGA Foundation and Youth on Course will continue to work side-by-side to build individual membership and secure more clubs for 2017.
