Christian Media - “At the Gates of Heaven: A Collection of Christian Poetry” by: Michael E. Osborne 20 History Corner- “A House Jesus Would Have Known” by Jeff Keefe 23 Ministry Minute- “K.I.S.S.” by Pastor Tom Broderick, Niagara Frontier Bible Church 24

Warriors of the Sword bills itself as a family-oriented martial arts program with a difference because this karate system is taught by Christian instructors from a Christcentered perspective. It is an evangelistic martial arts ministry that seeks to add to God’s Kingdom through discipleship and teaching. The name comes from Ephesians 6:17, “…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Their logo incorporates the cross of Jesus, the Bible serving as the foundation, the World, and the Martial Arts they hope to use to spread the word of Jesus to the world. I met with Robert Dallmann, director, who gave me a brief history. In the 1980s, when he was in need of a spiritual foundation, God led him to the Rev. Robert F. Heisner on the campus of Niagara County Community College. Dallmann, who is the grandson of a minister, was in need of a class and found one that fit into his schedule for Wednesday nights. Since it was taught by a minister, Dallmann thought he would attend and find out if this minister knew what he was talking about. Turned out the minister did know something, and Dallmann was hooked.

campuses presenting evangelistic karate demonstrations, which eventually led to the founding of Warriors of the Sword. Bushido Kai, their style of karate, was birthed in 1989 and is a combination of several other styles. Instead of being based in eastern mystical traditions, Bushido Kai is based on a Christian foundation as karate designed to glorify Jesus. Together they have authored a book, “The Definitive History of Bushido Kai.” Dallmann still trains with Rev. Heisner to this day.

are held every Tuesday evening at Niagara Community Church and will continue through the summer. Anyone can join - you don’t have to be a Christian and you don’t need any experience. Even people with certain physical limitations can do an adapted form of the training. There are usually 15-25 students per class. In order to promote family time, parents train free with a registered child. If you are interested you can observe, or take a free class after signing a release of liability.

Robert explained some of the connections between evangelism and martial arts. The apostle Paul referenced the Greek/Corinthian Olympics because he wanted to use something that was familiar. Through that he correlated the physical to the spiritual, to help followers make the transition into spiritual truths. As a demonstration of the correlation between the physical and the spiritual, Robert asked his three sons - Jared, Andrew, and Ethan - to join us. They demonstrated how easy it for even the smallest child to move you when you have no foundation. Then Robert took a stance and all three boys pushing together could not move him. He said that with Jesus as a foundation, we are built on solid rock.

Sessions start with prayer and warmup exercises, and may include testing, devotionals, bag and board work. It was pleasing to see a basket filled with Bibles at the front of the class. Students are taught the tenets of acting respectfully, humbly, honestly, and courageously. They should be aware (of God), avoid (temptation) and act (on the word of God. I talked to a mother who is taking the class with her son. She said the spiritual aspect enhances what she is doing in her life and that this helps her build physical, mental and spiritual strength.

Warriors of the Sword also performs evangelistic team outreaches where they Rev. Heisner also happened to have studied present up to hour-long demonstrations on karate in Japan and Robert began training His goal is to bring people to Christ spiritual growth. They can tailor these to the with him. They started visiting college through classes and demonstrations. Classes audience and will work with whoever is in

Warriors of the Sword continued from page 1 charge to meet their ministry needs. For example, with the AWANA clubs, they put together a demonstration around the theme of the “armor of God.” Depending on the team’s availability, Warriors of the Sword evangelistic martial arts demonstrations could be incorporated into such church activities as a family ministry, church service, or Sunday School presentation. The goal of the demonstrations is to impress people with the Salvation message of Jesus, not with the martial arts. Depending on the travel involved, the team is usually willing to put on a demonstration for a love offering, but they do ask that hosts prayerfully consider the costs involved. Warriors of the Sword is a ministry of ChristLife, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. Bob hopes to use this ministry to bring people to Jesus, because “He is the one in charge.” In addition to his work with Warriors of the Sword, Bob is a full-time paralegal and spreadsheet application developer for custom spreadsheets, Director of ChristLife, Inc., a home school group leader, and an elder at his church. COMING EVENT: Saturday, June 23, 7:00 p.m. weather permitting. The evangelism team will be putting on demonstrations during the Niagara Power Baseball Game for Faith Night. The Niagara Power (www.niagarapower.org)

is a collegiate baseball team that is part of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The game takes place at Sal Maglie Stadium, 1200 Hyde Park Blvd in Niagara Falls. Warriors of the Sword will be putting on demonstrations at the beginning of the game and between innings.

ON Walking for Fitness Is It Okay for Me To Walk? Answer the following questions before you begin a walking program: q Has your doctor ever told you that you have heart trouble? q When you exercise, do you have pains in your chest or on your left side (neck, shoulder or arm)? q Do you often feel faint or have dizzy spells? q Do you feel extremely breathless after mild activity? q Has your doctor told you that you have high blood pressure? q Has your doctor told you that you have bone or joint problems, like arthritis, that could get worse if you exercise? q Are you over 50 years old and not use to a lot of exercise? q Do you have a condition or physical reason not mentioned here that might interfere with an exercise program? f you answered yes to any of these questions,

please check with your doctor before starting a walking program or other form of exercise. How Do I Start a Walking Program? It is important to design a program that will work for you. In planning your walking program, keep the following points in mind: • Choose a safe place to walk. Find a partner or group of people to walk with you. Your walking partner(s) should be able to walk with you on the same schedule and at the same speed. • Wear shoes with thick flexible soles that will cushion your feet and absorb shock. • Wear clothes that are right for the season. Cotton clothes for the summer help to keep you cool by absorbing sweat and allowing it to evaporate. Layer your clothing in the winter, and as you warm up, you can take off some layers. • Stretch before you walk. See the warm up exercises here. • Think of your walk in three parts. Walk slowly for 5 minutes. Increase your speed for the next 5 minutes. Finally, to cool down, walk slowly

again for 5 minutes. • Try to walk at least three times per week. Add 2 to 3 minutes per week to the fast walk. If you walk less than three times per week, increase the fast walk more slowly. • To avoid stiff or sore muscles or joints, start gradually. Over several weeks, begin walking faster, going further, and walking for longer periods of time. • The more you walk, the better you will feel. You also use more calories. Safety Tips Keep safety in mind when you plan your route and the time of your walk. • Walk in the daytime or at night in well-lighted areas. • Walk in a group at all times. • Notify your local police station of your group’s walking time and route. • Do not wear jewelry. • Do not wear headphones. • Be aware of your surroundings.

A Healing Moment

“When We Really Need to Change” Transformation is a universal constant that affects our lives from the moment we are born until the time of our own death. At the root of transformation we find change. We can look at change as the birth of something new out of what has been, a rebirth, a clearing of our path to make way for something new and unknown. At this season in which we celebrate Christ’s journey to the cross and the power of his resurrection , his rebirth into the fullness of God’s eternal love, we can choose to refocus our own journey in a similar way with faith in the outcome. Repeated bouts of adversity are an unavoidable aspect of our lives. Each person or family has its’ own way of the cross marked by loss, illness, broken relationships, grief and guilt. We battle against our inner struggles or outer situations. Many times we emerge on the opposite side of our struggles stronger and better able to cope with challenges yet to come. Sometimes though, we will encounter difficulties that seem completely hopeless to deal with. At those times we will apply everything we have learned up to that time to fix the problem, only to meet with results that did not work in the past and still doesn’t. What do we do at this point? Too often, we gather our

perseverance and staying power and push the same old solution even harder. When we are met again with the same result or perhaps an even more deteriorated situation, we may feel demoralized and hopeless. It is at such a point in our own journey that we may be most open to the forces of faith and grace. In eastern spiritual traditions, the life path is seen as a bird with two wings, one is God’s grace, the other is our own selfeffort. Without both wings working, the bird cannot fly. For us in a crisis, our two-winged bird may require a change in perspective, behavior or response along with the faith that God’s grace supports this. These changes can do much more to help us move past a difficult point where our old ways no longer serve us. But how do we arrive at this transformative change of perspective? How do we rise from the pains of our own crosses? Perhaps we have to pause, and look inside ourselves in some way for new answers. This can be particularly challenging work when we are anxious and stressed yet it is absolutely necessary if change is to occur. To use a modern analogy, when we fly to a destination, the first thing the flight attendants tell us is that we must first put oxygen masks on ourselves if we are to have

any chance to help our traveling companions in an emergency. One way give ourselves that same opportunity to breathe fresh air into a difficult situation or frame of mind is to find a counselor to walk with us for a while. The counselor who is a good fit for us listens deeply to our story and is able to function as a mirror for us. In viewing ourselves in this clear, caring yet objective mirror, personal transformation and change becomes a real possibility maybe for the first time in our life. Change is seldom easy and can yield unexpected outcomes. Yet, just as we welcome Spring with faith in the resurrection of the fresh, fragrant, mysterious beauty of God’s world, so can we feel assured that the same faith can carry us through our own trials stronger and ready to take the next step on our path. If it feels like a time in your life when working with a Samaritan Counselor will help you with that needed change in perspective, we can be contacted for an appointment at 716-743-9117. We are able to counsel you at a convenient location near your home or workplace. Penny Mckenna MsEd, MA MHC

A House Jesus Would Have Known BY JEFF KEEFE In 2009 the Israel Antiquities Authority, under the direction of Alexandra Yardenna, announced they uncovered the remains of a 1st century house in Nazareth on the grounds of a convent near the Church of the Annunciation. The house consisted of two rooms and a courtyard that held a rock-hewn cistern that would have collected rainwater. In addition to ordinary pottery fragments, some chalk vessels were found. Chalk vessels are sometimes called stone vessels, by either name, they were made of white or bituminous chalk which is soft limestone. The presence of chalk vessels indicates its inhabitants were observant of the purity laws of the Torah. Stone or chalk vessels did not become ritually unclean. The quality of the potter fragments and vessels would indicate the residents were not wealthy.

The discovery is quite important for understanding Jesus and his village background. Nazareth was just 3 miles outside of Sepphoris which was built by Herod Antipas and served as his capital during Jesus’ early childhood and teen years. Sepphoris was the major urban center of Galilee filled with Roman and Greek culture in contrast to an agricultural peasant hamlet about an hour’s walk away. Nazareth is not mentioned in the Hebrew Scriptures or in the inventory of Galilean towns by the 1st century Jewish writer, Flavius Josephus. That has led some to speculate that Nazareth never existed. This discovery should end that speculation. The size and style of the house indicates that Nazareth was a modest Jewish village typical of the time. Nazareth was a small community, perhaps sheltering a few dozen families, perhaps 50 homes. They

likely grew legumes and other vegetable crops, barley and wheat, grapes, figs, olives and maybe pomegranates. Dr. James Tabor, Chair of the University of North Carolina Religious Studies, writes that “this discovery, along with tombs and agricultural remains, seems to reflect a coherent picture of a rather typical 1st Jewish century village located near a natural spring in the valley surrounded on hills, with Sepphoris just to the northwest. This location also fits our early Christian tradition of Miriam (Mary), mother of Jesus, growing up in the outskirts of Sepphoris where her parents Joachim and Anna lived.” Dr Tabor further speculates, “Its...name might well derive from its inhabitants laying claim to Davidic lineage–the Hebrew word netzer, meaning “branch,” from which the name is taken, is used

in Isaiah 11 to refer to the royal house of David.” Modern Nazareth is a city of 65,000 people, with over 200,000 in its metropolitan area. The expense involved in moving people out of occupied modern buildings, not to mention permits and other permissions make the prospects for an expanded archaeological excavation of Nazareth unlikely at this time. Alexandre Yardenna, director of the excavation, told news reporters, “It was likely Jesus and his childhood friends would have known the house.”

Writer and pastor Max Lucado in his book Walking With the Savior said “The most powerful life is the most simple life. The most powerful life is the life that knows where it’s going; that knows where the source of strength is...” We need to be reminded of the K.I.S.S. formula, “Keep It Simple Sweetie”. Christianity is simple not complicated. The Good News is that Christ died according to the Scriptures, he was buried, and He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.” His last words on the cross were, “It is finished! (Tetelestai). It was a banking/ financial term meaning “Paid in full”. Christ suffered and died “once” for our sins, never to be repeated. He paid our sin debt against a Holy and Just God once and for all at Calvary’s cross. The simple yet profound response on our behalf is to receive that truth, that fact by simple child like faith. It is to be received and accepted by faith, total trust and reliance on what He did on our behalf. Then our simple life response to Him is summed up: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind... and love your neighbor as yourself.” - Pastor Tom Broderick Niagara Frontier Bible Church
