Accolade for zoo’s vet GAZETTE REPORTER The Joburg Zoo’s senior veterinarian Michelle Barrows received the Chairman’s Award from the African Association of Zoos and Aquaria (Paazab) for her contribution to the field of zoological medicine. “Barrows has worked as associate and now senior veterinarian at the zoo for seven years,” said past Paazab chairman Dr Mark Penning of Durban’s uShaka Marine World. She has overseen the progression of the zoo’s veterinary department with a strong emphasis on preventative medicine and education. She developed a popular ‘externship’ programme that provides opportunities for veterinary students and nurses to gain experience of and develop their skills in wildlife and zoological medicine – a programme she is still passionately driving to ensure local and international students can share her dream

of working with wildlife. She has provided training opportunities for vets and students from over 20 countries.” Barrows organised the first African Symposium on Zoological Medicine at Joburg Zoo, which provided professional development opportunities for veterinarians working with zoo animals, exotic pets and wildlife; shared knowledge with colleagues in other countries; and raised awareness of zoological medicine as a career. “This was an overwhelming success with 200 delegates from eight African countries. The vets from the rest of Africa also had an opportunity to train at the Joburg and Pretoria zoos during and after the symposium. In recognition of this job well done, and in acknowledgement of selfless efforts on behalf of a grateful association, the Chairman’s Award is conferred upon Michelle,” said Penning.

Jono Hall took first place for his potjie.

Jono’s pot luck GAZETTE REPORTER A cloud-covered sky over the Emmarentia Sailing Club was bad news for sailors, but turned out to be a pretty good day for making fires and bringing out the old potjies The Friends of The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens committee hosted its first annual fundraising potjkiekos competition and guests and the seven entrants made the most of the gloomy weather. John Cartwright lit the fires at 10.30am and dug holes for the pots. He entered three delectable potjies and took second and fifth places. His most unique dish was a whole pumpkin filled to the brim with an assortment of vegetables. Councillor Pat Richards, Michael Thompson and Chris Atkins had the culinary pleasure of judging. It was an extremely close call but in the end Jono Hall cooking his first potjie won first place. His prize, two tickets to the Spain and

Honduras 2010 Fifa World Cup™ match, was donated by Emmarentia resident Alex Eliott. Fiona Lee and Anne Askew also took home prizes. Over 35 bowls of rice were bought and all took great pleasure in sampling each potjie. “What better way to spend a cool autumn day than to sit next to Emmarentia Dam, keeping warm around the fires, sipping wine and making new friends,” said Betina Cartwright. Ryan Metcalf and friends had such a great time they promised to enter again and next time bring along many potjiekos connoisseurs. Thanks are due to City Parks for donating winter jackets, and to the Buck and Hog for donating meal vouchers. Funds raised will go towards erecting permanent braais next to the dam along Louw Geldenhuys Drive. It is hoped this will help control people braaing and burning the grass and trees.
