40th Festival of the Arts The Festival of the Arts provides a unique arts experience of observation and participation for Girl Scout Daisies through Ambassadors. Nearly every genre of arts is included — music, dance, drama, visual, classical, and folk. Workshops provide a hands-on experience for creative discovery. The possibilities are wonderful.

How Do I Start?

Read the catalog thoroughly and learn what is available for your troop’s grade level. (One suggestion is to highlight your troop’s grade level programs as you go through the catalog.) Each program identifies grade levels that are allowed for attendance. Discuss with your troop what all of you would like to attend. In choosing, be flexible and select alternative choices. All programs included in the Festival are excellent, so there are no bad choices, just preferences. Try something new and plan for variety. One purpose of the Festival is to introduce new art forms to girls. Make a deal with your girls to include something they like as well as something of your choice.

What Can I Expect?

In order to fairly distribute the programs for Festival, categories have been established. There are three (3) categories from which to choose. Your troop may attend no more than one (1) program in the Events category and no more than one (1) program in the Workshops category. You may attend a total of three (3) programs. All three (3) may be in the Performances, Exhibits and Tours category if that is your troop’s wish.

Programs are generally scheduled at the following times: 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 1:30 p.m. (Please note in the “Times” column that there are some programs scheduled outside the three main times.) The time periods are planned to allow driving time from one location to the next.

You do not have to fill all three time periods. For Girl Scout Daisies and Brownies, we recommend attending only two programs during the Festival, as girls that young get tired very quickly and have short attention spans. Please be sure to note how many programs you want to attend.

Approximately one hour and fifteen minutes has been allowed for lunch; however, the exact amount of time will depend upon the ending time of your program before lunch and/or the starting time of your program after lunch. Programs are scheduled to last approximately 1 to 1¼ hours unless noted otherwise in the “Times” column.

Follow the registration instructions carefully (see page 17). Use the pullout form in the center of this catalog for registering your troop. Please fill the form out completely. Send the registration form and full payment to the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana Office.

Assumption High School presents “West Side Story” Location: Assumption High School Theater Time(s): 7:00 p.m. # of people per event 100

This musical Romeo and Juliette story is set in the tenements of New York city and tells of two rival street gangs: the Jets, second-generation American teens, and the Sharks, Puerto Rican immigrants. When the war between the Jets and Sharks reaches a fever pitch, Jets leader Riff decides to challenge the Sharks to one last “winner takes all” rumble. He decides to meet Sharks leader Bernardo for a war council at a gymnasium dance. Riff wants his old pal Tony, the cofounder of the Jets, to come along but Tony has set his sights on vistas beyond the neighborhood and has fallen in love with Bernardo’s sister, Maria, just, as in Romeo and Juliet, this will eventually end in tragedy. Fabulous music from Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim will have you singing your way home. **Note the show is 2 hours in length. D B

Floyd Central High School presents “The Music Man ” Location Floyd Central High School: Time(s):7:30 p.m. # of people per event 200 Fast-talking con man Harold Hill goes from town to town selling citizens on starting a “boy’s band,” then skips town with the money they spend to order instruments and uniforms. Looking for new suckers in Iowa, Hill arrives in River City, where he declares that the only way to save the youth of River City from the lure of the poolroom is to organize a boy’s band with himself as teacher and director. He sets his sights on winning over local music teacher Marian Paroo who rightly considers Hill a fraud! With memorable tunes like “76 Trombones” “Gary, Indiana”, “Ya Got Trouble”, “Till There Was You” and many more, you’ll see why this play has remained a hit for audiences of all ages. **Note the show is 2 hours in length.

Doug Berky will introduce our audience to sagacious stories told around home fires on every continent. Utilizing elaborate masks, his considerable skills of mime, inventive costume design and puppetry, Doug tells stories from many world cultures. Appalatin was formed through the band members’ mutual love of the folk music sounds of Latin America and the Caribbean. Appalatin’s original music is a fusion of Latin and Appalachian folk music from the band members’ homelands in Central America, the Andes and Appalachia. Instrumentation features the guitar, charango, mandolin, Andean flutes, bongos, congas, and cajón. Their songs reflect messages of freedom, community, empowerment, human rights, spirituality, and environmental stewardship. www.appalatin.com

The fascinating Yenawine Dioramas bring to life childhood memories from the early 1900s. “Clay, Glass, and Metal” opens in October. And you can take a self-guided tour of a unique exhibit that reveals how ordinary people from Southern Indiana helped overthrow the institution of slavery. Creativity abounds throughout the Ali Center with a variety of art and media. A guided tour of the Ali Center will include some of Ali’s poetry, his sketches, and video of some classic examples of Ali’s humor. A fair damsel from the Frazier’s Historic Interpretations Department tells the traditional French legend of a Martha, a young visitor who rescues the villagers of Tarascon from the horrible, fire-breathing dragon that has been terrorizing them. Corsets, Crinolines, and Crimping Irons: Fashion through Time Location: Frazier History Museum Time(s): 1:30 p.m. # of people per event 30 We’ll explore the evolution of fashion trends through time and across cultures. Step into the Victorian lifestyle at the 19th century mansion of the William Stewart Culbertson family. Frescoed ceilings and walls are a feature of the ongoing restoration of the mansion. Flame Run Glass Studio Location: Flame Run Glass Studio Time(s): 11:00 a.m. # of people per event 75 Watch molten glass transform into breathtaking works of art at Kentucky’s largest glass-blowing facility. Visit and learn about the ancient secrets revealed at the Falls of the Ohio State Park. This fascinating outdoor classroom offers a naturally exposed 220-acre Devonian fossil bed—one of the .largest in the world. A 14-minute film “400 Million Years at the Falls” runs on the hour and half-hour. It provides an introduction to the fossil beds and the displays of the many people whose lives intersected with this natural treasure. The museum and fossil beds can be explored on your own. Join the fun filled and exciting world of Harold and the Purple Crayon in an interactive performance. The YPAS Dancers will perform a narrated dance of the beloved children’s book Harold and the Purple Crayon. Think - Animals, Animals, Animals; Dance, Dance, Dance; Music, Music, Music. All seating will be on the floor so girls can watch the performance, color with purple crayons and sing along with the YPAS performers. Troop leaders and students can come dressed as their favorite animals! At the end of the show, the girls will have the opportunity to dance with Harold and have their pictures taken. These pictures will be emailed to troop leaders, or if you would like to have the pictures immediately, bring your own SD cards.

S One of Louisville’s finest historic homes was once the A center of a hemp plantation. Built in the Federal architectural style, the house is based on plans by Thomas Jefferson. Included is a tour of the home, museum, and grounds with an emphasis on the lifestyle of the Speed family and enslaved African-Americans at Farmington. Tours begin at the Visitor’s Center.

Howard Steamboat Museum Location: Howard Steamboat Museum Time(s): 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. & 1:30 p.m. # of people per event 50 This guided “splash from the past” tour gives an insight into shipbuilding and riverboat history. Visit the three-story, 22-room Richardson Romanesque mansion where the first floor features original furnishings and gives a glimpse of life in the 1800s. The house has a nautical air that allows visitors to imagine being a riverboat passenger on what used to be considered elaborate floating palaces. The second floor is devoted to steamboat history with models and artifacts of famous riverboats.

Have you ever seen a wallaby, a dingo, or a sugar glider? Or listened to the rhythm of the didgeridoo? Kentucky Down Under will introduce you to many Australian animals, reptiles, birds, and artifacts along with stories of Australian aborigines to give you a taste of the Great Outback of Australia. In order to keep the animals healthy, you will NOT be allowed to touch the animals.

Tour the historic home, museum, and grounds to discover the lifestyle of a 19th century farm in Kentucky. There is a brief audio/visual presentation before the tour. Locust Grove is the last home of Louisville founder, George Rogers Clark, the Revolutionary War hero. The 1790 Georgian home and other buildings on the 55 acres will be open.

The Louisville Leopard Percussionists are a performing ensemble of 50 student musicians, ages 7-12, living across Metro Louisville. Always a favorite, St. Xavier’s Xpress players are happy to return to the festival with another improvisational presentation. Parts of this fun, fast-paced show require directions from the audience, so viewers should come prepared to participate.

The show is “BIG”- really, really big! The size of the universe is vast. The numbers used to describe it are, well, astronomical. Using Immersavision technology, “BIG” explores the Universe and takes the audience on a tour of some of its most magnificent sights. Note the special starting time.

“Laser Magic” uses laser lights that dance and dazzle as the music plays! You’ll hear a mix of popular music by various artists such as Shania Twain, Will Smith, Celine Dion, Enya and more. This family-owned firm has been producing handmade candies for four generations, since 1891. Watch a video on Schimpff’s, see a demonstration of old-fashioned candy made on turn-of-the-century equipment, and hear some history of the area. Each girl will receive a small goodie bag of candy. Come join River City Ballet and get an up close and personal look at the art of Ballet. Aurora and her friends, Bluebirds, Cats and Jewels will dance for you in excerpts from the Act 3 wedding celebration of “The Sleeping Beauty”. Then join us for the holiday classic, “The Nutcracker, Act 2”. Clara helps the Nutcracker Prince defeat the Mouse King and travels to a land of magical dances. You’re going to love this all-girl rock band, made up of five teenaged young ladies from right here in Kentuckiana. They play songs from Lady Gaga, High School Musical, and The Go-Go’s, as well as some Hi-tops originals. They recently Won second place in a national “Battle of the Bands” and played a winners gig at Disneyland! They were voted Fan Favorite, and Bayley was voted Best Bassist for the whole event! They’ve Played gigs at the Hard Rock Café and the Kentucky State Fair, and they even opened for the Jonas Brothers! You won’t want to miss this last Festival of the Arts performance before the ladies head off to college next year!

Women Behind the Derby Location: Kentucky Derby Museum Time(s): 9:00 a.m. # of people per event 50 Women are more than just pretty faces beneath Derby Hats! Come to the track for a tour to learn more about who does what in those long, long hours of training that lead up the race. Watch for the ever-increasing number of women who have made it onto the track and on horseback. You’ll be able to check out the special exhibits and watch the traditional 360-degree movie in the Derby Museum. Daisy and Brownie Workshops Girls may attend one workshop from their grade level. Workshops are available for girls’ participation only. Workshops are approximately 1 to 1 1/4 hours in length unless otherwise noted. Leaders are expected to provide supervision of their girls during the workshop and to assist if requested by the instructor. B

Come to Ms. Shelly’s Art Club in the Highlands, a real art studio where creativity abounds! In this hands-on art workshop, your Daisies will make Daisies! In all shapes, sizes, and colors, the keepsake daisy artwork your Daisies create today will be mementos of Festival of the Arts day, as well as their Daisy Girl Scout experience. Come have your Daisies make Daisies! Note: Due to space limits, only 2 adults per troop, please.

Adults will be needed to assist with the ironing part of the project! Each girl will need to bring a white or light colored, solid sweatshirt for their project base.

Experience the beauty of Asian culture through the expressive musical movements of Chinese Ribbon Dance and the controlled quiet motions of Tai Qi (Tai Chi). We will begin by making a folded fan to use with Tai Qi steps, then advance to using colorful ribbons to perform movements of the Ribbon Dance. Traditional musical accompaniment rounds out a session filled with artistry, balance and harmony.

Begin your tap dance experience using rhythm and sounds to learn basic tap drills and combinations that will be used to develop a short routine! September 26 - All registrations received in the Council office before 5:00 p.m. will be scheduled first, by random drawing. All registrations received after this date will be scheduled according to the date on which they are received until the Festival is full or when registration closes on Wednesday, October 17th. October 4 - Deadline for additions to your troop’s first round Festival registration. Additions cannot be made after this date. If you need to add to your troop’s registration before the October 5th deadline, you must first call the Council office (636-0900 ext 34000 or 1-888-771-5170). Use the “Additions” registration form located in the back of this brochure to add girls to your Festival registration. October 17 - Due to the volume of this event, registration closes and no changes can be made after this date. October 24 -Troop schedule, tickets, and patches will be mailed beginning on this date.

The Festival registration process is designed to be fair to all — new and experienced — and to allow time for girls to be included in the decisions about their schedule.

Each girl will be able to chip/carve a part of the 100th Girl Scout anniversary time capsule that will be on display at the Girl Scout Program and Learning Center. Small pieces of limestone that are chipped off the larger piece will be turned into a keepsake for you to take home.

The act of songwriting and the song must contain emotion to be able to capture an audience. Emotion is created through build, tension/release, time signature, mood, and intensity. Spend time with JC. Reedy (singer songwriter) and craft poetry, prose, and thought into songs. No experience needed! If you play guitar, banjo, ukulele, or a portable instrument, please bring it with you.
