The next day they arrived in Szåzhalombatta. The name of this town in Hungarian literally means ’one hundred tumuli’ referring to the tumulus field at the edge of the town. The Bronze Age population built an earthwork, which was inhabited for almost six hundred years. This was a preagricultural, hunter-gatherer society.

Savaria was situated close to the important ’Amber Road’ trade route. Etwin and Ning was walking on that road on their fourth day. They became very tired, but they enjoyed it very much.

The city also had an imperial residence, a public bath and an amphitheatre, and a mithraeum. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 456. Etwin and Ning spent four pleasent days. They enjoyed staying here.

Do you know that some legends are about the invasion, e.g. the legend of Sankt Gallen?

Do you know that they reached as far as the Atlantic Ocean?

Etwin and Ning arrived in Estergom after a tiring journey. Esztergom was the capital of the Hungarian Kingdom from the 10th century till the mid 13th century – during the age of Árpád-dynasty. In 1000 AD Stephen was crowned in this town.

Etwin and Ning travelled to Esztergom. It is the seat of the Primate (Archbishop) of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary from the 10th century. The cathedral, Esztergom Basilica is the largest church in Hungary.

Their next travelling was in Székesfehérvár (Seat of the White Castle) – In the Middle Ages this city was a royal residence and was one the most important cities of Hungary.

Do you know that in the Székesfehérvár Basilica, 37 kings and 39 queens consort were crowned, 15 rulers were buried here, the diets were held and the crown jewels were kept here?

On their fifteenth day Etwin and Ning met one of the most famous rulers Matthias Corvinus. He also called the Just in folk tales, was the King of Hungary and Croatia from 1458 until his death, 1490. With his patronage Hungary became the first European country which adapted the Rennesaince culture from Italy.

Etwin and Ning visited Visegrรกd. Matthias rebuilt the gothic Royal Residence of Buda in early Renessaince style and futher explanded it. His other favourite resindence was the summer palace of Visegrรกd.

Etwin and Ning were surprised with a great library. Matthias Corvinus’s library the Bibliotheca Corviniana was Europe’s greatest collection of secular books: historical chronicles, philosophic and scientific works in the 15 th century.
