Scandal hits Greater Carletonville council The Herald again reported on many happenings in its edition of 20 years ago. Scandal hit Greater Carletonville once again this week when one of its councillors was arrested for allegedly raping a young girl. The previous Monday evening, after a meeting of the TLC’s executive committee, Cllr Fezile “Mashokomisa” Ntsete was arrested by members of the Carletonville Child Protection Unit (CPU). He appeared in the Oberholzer Magistrate’s Court that evening and was released on R500 bail. According to the CPU, Ntsete allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl on Saturday night 5 October while her mother was away vi-
siting friends. Ntsete was ordered to appear in court on 5 November. He and four other councillors were in the news in September, and a charge of robbery was laid against him. He was alleged to have forcefully seized a loud hailer being used to inform Khutsong of a protest march against them. knee at the scene. Abram was air-lifted to a Johannesburg hospital. Robbers attack shopping complex Kagiso Segone A group of around 17 unmasked men went on the rampage at the Blyvoor shopping complex on the night of Saturday, 15 October. Jaap du Plessis, a security guard, was on duty at what is popularly known as Blyvoor Spar (now OK Minimark) at around 20:00 when the incident occurred. According to him, four of the suspects came into the shop while he was standing at the entrance; two of them were carrying firearms. The others went on to target other shops in the complex. The intruders marched him upstairs, assaulted him and threatened to throw him down the stairs before instructing him to get money from the cashiers. The suspects then went downstairs and turned their attention towards the cashiers, one of whom was pregnant. They assaulted one of them while in the process of helping themselves to the money. They fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes. During the same blitz, a café and a bottle store were robbed and money was stolen. In the process, they shot the bottle store owner in the left foot as he was trying to close the door. He was alone at the time. He was later taken to hospital but is currently in a stable condition. According to the investigating officer, Sgt Simphiwe Tshongoi, three shots were fired but only two cartridges were found on the scene. No one has been arrested as yet.

Two suspects wounded and arrested after farm attack Kagiso Segone Six suspects attacked the farm owner at Frederick Farm in Fochville on 18 October 2016. One of the farm workers was allegedly attacked first as he was busy preparing to start with his duties. He was held with a knife and his belongings were taken. He was then ordered to lie down on the ground. The farm owner arrived later and was walking around, looking for the worker when the suspects pointed the firearm at him and assaulted him. His wife and mother-in-law were able to lock themselves in the car and call the neighbour for help.
The neighbours responded immediately but the suspects managed to break the car window and help themselves to some of their belongings before fleeing in different directions. A shoot-out ensued during which two suspects were shot and wounded. They were arrested and taken to the hospital and are now under police guard. The other four suspects are still at large. The SAPS is calling on members of the community to assist them with this case. Man killed at the taxi rank Kagiso Segone An early morning passenger from Lesotho was killed at the Carletonville taxi rank at around 04:30 on Friday, 14 October. According to the taxi driver who witnessed the incident, he arrived at the taxi rank to find the victim and other commuters already inside his taxi. After all the others had been dropped off, the passenger said he had to get to Blyvoor and asked if he could hang around until then. At some stage, he said he needed to go and buy cigarettes. The driver warned him about how dangerous the taxi rank could be but the victim listened politely and went anyway. On his return, he sat on a bench next to the taxi while the driver tried to get some sleep. The driver was later awoken by somebody shouting for help. He looked around and saw the passenger, who was coming towards the taxi, stumble and fall forwards.The driver noticed that his back was soaked in blood and called for help. By the time the police and emergency services had arrived, however, the victim had already died. The deceased, who had been robbed of his wallet and its contents, was later identified as Mr Lebusa Clement Motseki. Four suspects involved in the incident have been arrested and the victim’s property was recovered.

Column Let’s talk about it Z Be careful of negative influences Kagiso Segone Everyone is vulnerable to the influence of other people but it is important to be aware of the kind of influence that we allow. Many young people make the wrong choices because they go with other people’s opinions Z especially those of bad friends. An individual is always surrounded by the influences of others and we sometimes become a product of those influences. Young people should start being conscious of how they fall prey to the outside world. Firstly, it is all about watching with whom you associate because the company one keeps paves one’s direction in life. When a young man or woman starts hanging around a group of friends, they usually end up adopting a similar lifestyle or mindset. The increase in gangsterism in
the Merafong community is a good example. It is the result of young people falling victim to the power of negative influence because there are fewer positive vibrations in this community. I believe the main thing that drives negative influence is the shortage of recreational facilities to steer the youth towards living positively. Influence is very simple and so easy to fall under because the ones being influenced cannot see themselves. I would like to caution young people against this pitfall as well as the power of influence that they, themselves, possess. There is always something good that one can do when one pays less attention to the noise of the world. The youth of this area and South Africa as a whole are currently in crisis because there is a great negative force at play. The way of living is currently based on having fun Z firstly through alcohol abuse and then substance abuse. Both lifestyles
lead to uncontrolled sexual behaviour. The things that happen at parties and clubs when young people are under the influence of liquor are very concerning. After every weekend, we hear of violence and blood is always spilt in the name of fun. Young people have to be aware that having fun often does not yield any positive results.There is nothing wrong with going out but there is if young people are affected negatively. The behaviour the youth exhibits also influences the young children that are coming from behind. They will follow the example and think it is right and we cannot blame them because they do what they see on the street and on TV. I do, however, acknowledge young people in this community who are really striving towards changing this situation. All the positive young men and women I have met personally have touched my heart deeply because of their dedication to the direction that I
preach about, week after week. It is time for the municipality, organisations and local businesses to work together and support initiatives that the youth come up with because most positive youngsters lack only the financial muscle to make a visible difference. The positive energy is slowly growing and I would like to encourage everyone who is riding on this positive wave to keep going because we are the last hope for this community.
Column On my mind – Living a healthy lifestyle Sipho Mashaba It is very important for us to take care of ourselves while we still can. I have decided to start taking good care of myself and, by that, I mean physically, emotionally, eating healthy foods and, most importantly, taking care of myself spiritually. I have realised that I haven’t been taking good care of myself because of the way I have star-
ted to live my life. Every time I do something bad to my health like consuming too much alcohol or eating fatty foods, my subconscious tells me that I have to stop doing what I am doing. I am now willing to change my lifestyle forever and stop these bad habits that only jeopardise my health. I believe that when I start changing the kind of food I eat, doing exercises and drawing closer to God, my mind will be
pure and my body will be healthy. Living a healthy lifestyle is a personal goal I have always wanted to achieve and I believe that I have to be someone different. For me, personal development is not about becoming someone new, but becoming a better version of myself. I also believe that personal growth is upgrading the real you, but not becoming someone new.
Man killed, friends wounded by unknown attackers Kagiso Segone A body of a man was found outside the main entrance of Star Hyper at Carletonville on the corner of Ada and Osmi um streets in the early hours of 15 Oc-
tober. The deceased had sustained multiple stab wounds to the head, chest and one to the back. The victim was later identified as Luntu Mvalo who lived in Wedela. He and two friends were appa-
rently walking back from a tavern when they were attacked by a group of unknown suspects. The other victims had also sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital. According to a car guard who was
on duty at the time, the victim was wearing blue jeans and was topless with blood all over his body. His black shoes were lying next to him, together with a knife and bloodied stones. Investigations are in progress.

The truck was recovered as the suspects tried to offload the cargo at a local tavern.
Kagiso Segone Four suspects appeared in the Khutsong magistrate’s court on Friday, 14 October, in connection with a hijacking in Kempton Park earlier in the week. The hijacked truck was located via a tracking device and the information was relayed to the Carletonville and Khutsong SAPS respectively. The

police responded immediately and found the vehicle at Epeleng tavern at Batswaneng Section in Khutsong on the afternoon of Wednesday, 12 October. Initially, there were five suspects involved but four of the crew members were dropped off in the Kliprivier area. The police apparently arrived at the tavern to find the suspects unloa-
ding cool drinks from the truck. When they spotted the police, they scattered on foot in different directions. The driver, who is believed to be complicit in the crime, also fled and was later arrested along with another three suspects. The owner of the tavern was arrested, too, but was released on bail. The suspects will all appear in court again on Monday, 24 October.
Suspects stole goods to the value of R26 350 while a woman was asleep in her home in Umgeni Street in Carletonville on 12 October. The complainant heard a noise at around 04:00 and pressed the alarm button. She went back to bed and, about 20 minutes later, she heard the dogs barking and went to check. She noticed that they were on the other side of the house where they are not supposed to be and she pressed the alarm button once again. It was later established that the alarm had been disconnected and the burglars gained entry by forcing a window open and removing the burglar bars. Among the stolen items were a Samsung Led television, a Samsung Galaxy tablet, a laser-beam box and a Nikon camera.

We should never try and hide our sin BibleStudyTools Sin is a reality with which we all must live. No one can escape the struggles we have with rebelling against God’s call on our lives (cf. Romans 3:1023). However, it is possible to choose whether one will vigorously fight the battle that wages against the flesh or not. The battle can be overwhelming but it does not have to result in demoralising defeat. One of Satan’s many devastating strategies, which is fueled by our own shame, is flight Z in other words Z to retreat, in silence. From the very beginning, sin has resulted in hiding and shame as Adam and Eve hid from one another
by covering themselves (cf. Genesis 3:7) and from the presence of the Lord in the garden by crouching among the trees (cf. Genesis 3:8). A similar type of ‘hiding’ is also evidenced in the refusal to own the sin when confronted. What do Adam and Eve do when confronted? They shift the blame in order to direct the attention of the Lord away from self. They do not want to be ‘seen’ in their sin so they justify it. The belief seems to be that, if they can direct the eyes of the Lord to someone else and away from themselves, they can remain hidden. In either case, the sin is avoided, hidden away, and not dealt with in an honest manner. Our natural tendency is to not deal with sin. Out of sight, out of mind... or is it? The beauty of the cross is that we are
clearly judged to be ‘sinners’ but given a new identity as ‘redeemed’, ‘children of God’, and ‘joint-heirs with Jesus Christ’. We do not have to hide our sin or justify it because Jesus has paid the penalty for us, bringing us undeserved forgiveness. He ‘hides our sin’ as far as the east is from the west, and he justifies us by his shed blood. However, until we reach heaven, we, the ‘redeemed’, wrestle with the realities of that old flesh (cf. Romans 7). It does no good to be pretentious about our sin. It is useless to pretend that we are better than we are. I would rarely advocate ‘wearing’ our sin ‘on our sleeve’, but it is futile to deny it or pretend that it does not exist.

New sinkhole sounds alarm bells Adele Louw A new sinkhole is causing huge volumes of sewage to leak underground, potentially contaminating water resources. The residents of Khutsong Ext. 3 alerted the Herald to the sinkhole that has developed in the veld near Hlanganani Primary School this week. The hole is right on a sewerage line that runs from Ext. 3 to the Khutsong sewerage works. ‘When it first started about three weeks ago, it was just a little hole but it has been getting bigger and bigger and now the sewerage pipe has been damaged as well,’ said Mr Chucku Kerileng, a community leader from the area. ‘One of our biggest worries is where all this sewage is going. It must eventually find its way to the Wonderfonteinspruit,’ he said, pointing to a stream of sewage quickly disappearing down a dark cavity in the sinkhole. It was so fast, in fact, that one could hear it several metres from the hole. Kerileng and other residents allege that the sinkhole collapsed after someone, presumably a geologist working for the government, drilled above the sewerage line. They showed the Herald at least one deep hole, connected to an underground cavity, only metres from the new sinkhole. There is also evidence to suggests that someone had been drilling there. Jittery residents fear that this is just further proof that the whole of Ext. 3 is geologically unstable. Several sinkholes have developed in the area.
Merafong City Local Municipality has left two of them open for more than two years. Another small hole has also appeared closer to the school and observers fear it may, too, be a sinkhole in the making.They also point out that a water leak very close to the playground has been ignored for months, maybe years. Towards the school’s back fence, there is a sewage leak that has become so big that residents have dug a trench to divert the waste from their yards. Rumours are doing the rounds that some Ext. 3 residents may be moved to an open piece of land next to Welverdiend; they are not sure whether this land is safe or not. The Herald asked the Merafong City Local Municipality for an update on behalf of the community. We wanted to know what the effect of the new sinkhole would be on sewerage service delivery since this has already been compromised by a previous sinkhole. The spokesperson promised that the municipality would establish the cause of the latest sinkhole. ‘We are not aware of any geologist who drilled or damaged sewer pipes in the area prior to the formation of a sinkhole. However, any substantiated evidence to that effect can be reported to the municipality and the service provider would be liable for damage to property,’ he said. ‘Due to the flow restrictions caused by the collapsed sewer outfall line, the network will be experiencing additional problems. The development will commence in the current financial year,’ the spokesperson concluded.

Municipality implements water restrictions Adele Louw The Merafong City Local Municipality will be implementing the water restrictions imposed by Rand Water elsewhere in Gauteng with immediate effect. Although the possibility of water restrictions has been in the pipeline for some time, the municipality announced this week that they would be going ahead. As a result of the worst drought in the past decade, the level of the Vaal Dam is now just 30 per cent, only 12 per cent of which can be pumped for use; the rest contains too much silt. In response, Rand Water, from which Merafong receives its supply, has announced a 15 per cent physical restriction on all urban areas and a further 20 per cent reduction in all irrigation water. ‘The municipality is calling on all residents to partner with us to conserve water in this challenging time. The prolonged drought has put the integrated Vaal River supply system under severe pressure and the restrictions are there to avert a looming water crisis. We need to use water ef-
fectively if we are to preserve the little there is in the system,’ a municipal spokesperson said on Tuesday. ‘The municipality promises to implement and enforce the water restrictions responsibly. We will prioritise water supply to institutions like hospitals and other care institutions that require water on a 24-hour basis. ‘There is a real danger of the water infrastructure being damaged if the Vaal River System is allowed to run dry,’ he warned. The municipality also acknowledged its role in the conservation of water. It has come under fire for a long time for not dealing with reported leaks immediately, leading to massive water losses. ‘The municipality has not been delivering water to its consumers in the Carletonville, Khutsong Proper and the extensions under normal operating circumstances. Three of its bulk water supply reservoirs have been damaged or affected by geological conditions that have led to sinkholes. Taking them out of the system has resulted in higher pressure than normal and us experiencing the highest number of burst pipes and system leaks ever. ‘A reservoir is supposed to be the source of supply to the reticulation sy-

the use of water from the municipal water supply. These include the lowering of pressure to all areas; the 06:00 to 18:00 limit to watering gardens with hosepipes and sprinklers; the ban on filling swimming pools, using hosepipes to wash cars and using water to clean outdoor areas.
Two children die in an accident
Adele Louw Residents of Blybank will have to get by without electricity after vandals damaged municipal infrastructure this week. ‘Blybank substation was attacked and vandalised in the early hours of Monday. Control cables have been stolen and the feeder cable was damaged, resulting in a transformer fault that caused it to burst into flames,’ a spokesperson of the Merafong City Local Municipality told the Herald on Tuesday. According to the spokesperson, the extent of the damage is significant and residents will be inconvenienced while it is being repaired.‘It will require an extensive procurement process. Based on our assessment of the damage, it will require an estimated seven days to rebuild and restore power to the area. The community of Blybank will, therefore, experience a power outage for approximately a week. SAPS volleyball tournament Kagiso Segone The Gauteng SAPS participated in the annual SAPS volleyball tournament at Pretoria University’s Groenkloof campus from 3 to 7 October. The team, captained by Wedela SAPS’s station commander, Capt. Mankontsho Setlhare ended in second place and took home a silver medal. Setlhare also won two individual performance awards Z one for the player of the tournament and the other for the most valuable player. The Gauteng province is proud to have sportsmen of Capt. Setlhare’s calibre.

Intussen het die Bulle met ‘n telling van 36 - 30 oor die WP geseëvier. Dit was net André van Engen Fochville en Ernest en Johan wat gedink het dat die WP dalk kon wen. As gevolg van sy goeie raaiskote was dit net Johan wat verlede week volpunte gehad en daarmee bonuspunte behaal het.
