Local emergency service personnel were on hand to provide information and answer questions during a fire truck tailgate party before the start of the Life in the Heartland community engagement evening. The party was hosted by Northeast Region CAER. The organization’s executive director, Brenda Gheran (fourth from the left), had special emergency preparedness kits on display for participants.

Life in the Heartland - a sold out success! Michelle Pinon Editor

Even Lamont County Reeve Wayne Woldanski had a hard time trying to find a parking place near the Bruderheim Memorial Centre Wednesday evening as the Life in the Heartland community event was a sold out success. Woldanski joked with

Bruderheim Mayor that the town will have to develop more parking near the facility to accommodate such crowds as the one in attendance, (nearly 200 residents), during the May 7th information sharing session. He went on to introduce the board members of Life in the Heartland, and thank all of the pre-

senters as well as staff for helping organize the event. Bruderheim Mayor Karl Hauch also thanked Life in the Heartland for allowing them to host the event and for all the people who helped organize the information session. During the evening over 20 organizations and industrial companies had displays and representatives on hand to discuss their future plans and activities. “With continued industrial development in the region, it’s increasingly important that we make information easily accessible for the community,” explained Vanessa Goodman, chair of the Life in the Heartland. “Since the fall of 2011, we’ve hosted two community information evenings each year. Their growing popularity is a testament to the

value of these events for both the community and industry.” Doug Sullivan, executive director of the Lamont County Regional Economic Development Initiative (LCREDI), also attested to the value of Life in the Heartland community engagement meetings, and being available to offer firsthand information to attendees during the biannual event. The session kicked off with a three minute video presentation courtesy of Fort Air Partnership which has recently developed a new air monitoring network plan in the Heartland and surrounding areas. Rick Danilkewich, terminal manager at Canexus, gave a thorough overview of the company’s expansion plans; what has been

completed, and what is left to be done during the final phase that will be completed later this summer. Danilkewich stated that the number of employees has more than doubled over the past two years, and highlighted the economic impact the expansion project has had, funneling in $50 million into the local area. Also, tied in with grow and expansion on Canexus’ Bruderheim terminal site, is MEG Energy’s HI-Q Project. Community relations coordinator Trev Ruberry said shovels would be going into the ground this coming week, and reiterated the company’s commitment to hiring locally and investing into community based organizations and projects. Shell Canada is celebrating its 30th anniver-

sary of the Scotford Upgrader, and Michael Frigge talked about some of the upgrades that have and will be done on site with the Carbon Capture Storage Project and plant renovations in 2015/’16. He also let attendees know about Shell’s new Community Grant Program, and to apply for funding under that program. Pembina Pipeline spokesman Jason Fydrichuk gave an overview of the company’s $415 million project as well as its commitment to community investment, pointing out its recent investment to the Bruderheim Fire Department. That marked the conclusion of the presentations, and attendees were invited to go to the information booths if they had any follow up questions.

Brush fire keeps local fire departments busy Michelle Pinon Editor

Local firefighters were kept busy the evening of May 9 and up until early afteroon on May 10 trying to control a brush fire about half a mile north of Highway 15 on Range Road 190. The Chipman Fire Department was first to respond to the fire. “Apparently, it started at road side, north of Highway 15, by a possible cigarette butt thrown carelessly out,” stated Randy Siemens, emergency services co-ordinator for Lamont County. Chipman Fire Chief Steve Rasmussen said the call came in around 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon. “Chipman responded with fast attack and engine and it was quickly determined I needed mutual aid. I called in Lamont engine and tender from St. Michael. I also called in Andrew tender and engine. “As the fire progressed

I called in the county cat to help us cut fire breaks in the bush. I then requested Bruderheim and Willingdon fire departments fast attack units. This was due to the terrain and size of bush that we could not get regular fire trucks close to the fires. Due to strong winds, the fire kept jumping our frie guards and headed south and east. We contained the fire along the north bank of the creek and stopped the fire approximately one kilometre east of Range Road 185. Fire Chief Rasmussen went on to state that no structures were at risk. “The cause is unknown , but we suspect that carelessness of a driver along Range Road 185 is probable cause as the origin was along the road.” Chipman fire remained on scene until 2 p.m. the following afternoon when Rasmussen handed command over to Randy Siemens. More fire guards were created and a cat was used to extin-

guish any major hot spots. Rasmussen said there were approximately 35 firefighters and crew on scene Friday, and he estimates close to 40 hours of fire activity by the time the call was completed. Even though Siemens has not tallied the costs of the fire yet, he said the average brush fire in the county is $8,000. “We want to thank a very kind citizen as well. A young lady around 11:30 p.m. Friday evening after crews were released had noticed a flame and smoke and called 911 to report it. As she was not aware that we had a crew in the bush she waited for us to arrive. When she found out that five of us were going to be there all night she returned with perogy dinner, muffins, snacks, beverages and sandwiches for my crew. We greatly appreciated this as it came in very handy as the night went on.”

Lamont Home Hardware Brings Your Inner Designer Home Beauti-Tone’s new Colour Comes Home colour and design system gives wings to customers’ creative vision “Colour should be fun, invigorating, inviting and, most importantly, it should help create a home that is as beautiful and individual as the people who live in it,” says Mic and Debra Dunsmore, Owners of Lamont Home Hardware. Over two years in development, Beauti-Tone’s new Colour Comes Homecolour-inspiration program, offered through Home Hardware Stores Limited, was developed to give both new painters and design-savvy consumers the right combination of tools to help them realize the look they want for their home. With online resources like Pinterest and Houzz, today’s customers are inspired to create gorgeous spaces in their homes,” says Dunsmore. “We wanted to offer an in-store experience that recognizes this growing fascination with DIY home decor, but also not turn our back on more traditional shoppers.” Colour Comes Home contains four key components: a new full-spectrum Colour System, an Essential Whites collection; eight designinspired whole home collections; and loads of DIY decor project ideas. Beauti-Tone’s 1,228 Haute Hues were hand-selected to reflect contemporary colour directions-providing nuanced choices of hues that Canadians love and that work with bedding, upholstery and other decor items we are pulling into our homes. A curated Essential Whites collection provides designers with the whites they crave, and enthusiasts with a collection of options for this timeless staple. Interior design professionals advise that colour should flow seamlessly from one room to the next, but picking a palette that works from so many choices is not always easy for homeowners. Beauti-Tone comes to the rescue with eight new of-the-moment collections: Comfort Zone; Fresh Outlook; Urban Perspective; Vintage Finds; It’s Just Natural; Refined Instincts; Simply Stated; and Lush Life. Each has 16 colours that can be mixed and matched to create a fresh, upscale look that is affordable, doable and desirable. Complete with a tool that helps the customer isolate colour combinations, these cards are impossible to put down. Want to collect and save colour chips for future projects? Every colour in the Colour Comes Home collections is also featured in a 7/8-inch x 4 1/4-inch swatch that is hole-punched so customers can make their small fandecks that they can keep. Finally, Beauti-Tone embraces our fascination with making our flea market finds fabulous and other DIY home decor. Every Colour Comes Homecollectioin showcases “How to Get the Look” decor projects that are innovative and fun and that provide the designer panache associated with much higher-cost accessories. From Where I Sit: Become A Researcher

By Hazel Anaka Some time ago I had the chance to take part in a wine tasting session. I know, dirty job but someone has to do it! Leading the lesson was a sommelier with about fifteen years experience; obviously a woman who knows her way around a bottle. Yet she claims to

still be learning. Which is my way of saying that anything you read here next is based on the notes of a rank amateur (me) who hardly ever drinks wine. So forgive me if something isn’t quite right. Here’s what I now know. The front of the tongue tastes sweet and salty; the side detects sour and the back of the tongue senses bitter. White wine should be served chilled which means pop it into the freezer for about ten minutes at between minus four and minus seven degrees. Don’t chill red for more than five to seven minutes in the fridge. Ninety per-

cent of red is a one in terms of dryness. To me dry equates to tartness. Screw cap bottles are not a sign of an inferior product and in fact prevent ‘cork taint’ or leaking. Cork taint can affect up to ten percent of every wine in every winery. Let wine (except for bubbly) breathe for approximately two hours after decanting. After you open a bottle you should consume it within forty-eight to seventy-two hours. If you use a vacuum it’s good for up to a week. A box wine can stay up to three weeks because of the vacuum seals. ““Oxygen spray works well and aerating spouts are awe-

some.”” Gotta admit I have no idea what those notes mean. Our tasting table included a bucket for pouring the sample into if we didn’t drink it all and a plate of crackers to cleanse the palate between samples. We also had a pitcher of water to rinse our glasses between red and white. The procedure is simple. Swirl the sample (unless it’s a bubbly) to determine the ‘leg’ or how it moves down the bowl of your glass. The

slower it moves, the more alcohol it has. Our five samples ranged from eleven percent alcohol to fifteen. Look at the wine for clarity. Is it murky? Does it have floaters? To determine ‘the nose’ get your nose into the bowl of the glass and smell. Take a big breath, swirl the sample in your mouth before swallowing. Give it another chance by repeating the procedure. Read the label to learn the name of the winery, the vintage (or year bot-

tled), the varietal (or name of the grape), where it’s from, any write-ups and the alcohol level. Look for merit or accolades (award stickers) on the bottles when shopping for wine. Canada is right up there with Spain, the US, Australia and New Zealand in the whites. Chile, Spain, the US and Australia have great reds. Better yet, just have fun doing your own ‘research’ from where I sit.

Tips for stretching your vacation dollar this summer The affordable vacation is becoming more and more rare. Rising fuel costs have made air and automotive travel considerably more expensive, hamstringing

many would-be travelers' budgets before they even begin their search for a hotel or private rental. While vacations may have become more

expensive in recent years, that should not prevent men and women from booking trips to enjoy a little rest and relaxation. In fact, there are many ways to stretch your vacation dollar without sacrificing the quality of your getaway. • Shake things up with your travel schedule. Flexibility can be your greatest ally with regard to stretching your vacation dollar, so consider traveling on less popular travel days when planning your vacation. For example, instead of booking your vacation to coincide with a typical work week, consider breaking your vacation up over a two-week period, leaving on a Wednesday and returning the following

Tuesday. Both your outgoing and return flights will likely be less expensive than they would be if you were to travel on a weekend, when flights tend to be more expensive, and you will still get to enjoy a full week's worth of vacation. • Consider booking through a travel website or travel agent. Many companies offer travel packages at heavily discounted prices. While some people can be skittish about booking trips through a website, a little research can go a long way toward calming any nerves you might have about booking your trip. Read previous customer reviews of a deal before booking your trip, shying away from deals that fellow travelers felt fell

Keeping pests away from outdoor entertaining areas Outdoor entertaining is one of the joys of nicer weather. People routinely gather on the patio or around the pool when the weather warms up, and such recreational activities can foster companionship and reduce stress. However, if nuisance animals and insects are sharing entertaining spaces, these pests can quickly put a damper on the festivities. While it may seem impossible to keep an outdoor entertaining area completely pest-free, there are ways to keep such unwanted intrusions manageable. Identify common pests Yard pests vary depending on geography, so the first step is to figure out which pests are native to your area. Mosquitoes can be found in many locales, but certain insects may be exclusive to specific regions. For example, palmetto bugs are native to moist, tropical areas, such as the southeastern United States. In addition to insects, squirrels, moles, raccoons, and other rodents may also descend on a property. Neighborhoods that abut natural ecosystems or infringe on wild animals' habitats may see a wider array of animals encroaching on entertaining spaces. Deer, bears, coyotes, and certain bird species can present their own brands of trouble. Homeowners new to an area may have to experience a learning curve to determine which pests are common to a certain area, as well as which seasons bring which creatures. Try natural repellents first To minimize damage to the environment and to protect local wildlife, homeowners should exhaust natural ways to

repel pests before resorting to less eco-friendly methods. Animals can be kept out of a yard with fences and other barriers, such as thorny bushes. Many pests are deterred by smells or certain structures in a lawn or garden. For example, inserting chicken wire into a garden bed may be enough to repel burrowing animals. Certain insects, such as flies and mosquitoes, find the aromas of citronella grass, basil and marigold offensive. Surrounding a property with these plants can create a natural bug repellent. Lavender and rosemary are other aromatics that may deter pests. Blood meal and soap solutions can repel deer and other wildlife that may feed on garden plants. Pests attracted to food can be kept at bay with frequent sweeping or hosing down of the patio. In addition, maintain a clean grill and store trash in tightly secured receptacles. Consider more traditional alternatives If natural repellents do not work, you may need to rely on more traditional products to repel insects and other pests. Beetle traps lure beetles with an inviting scent before the beetle gets trapped in a bag and cannot exit. Traps for wasps and flies follow a similar premise. Bug zappers are largely viewed as an inhumane option but can be highly effective. Unfortunately, these zappers also attract and kill beneficial insects, such as bees and butterflies. Chemical repellents also are available. Stores stock pesticides that will rid plants of damaging insects. These repellents also may be used around the patio to make the area inhospitable to insects and other pests.

Affordable Vacation Continued from EXTRA! Front

of sightseeing and experiencing a different culture, then an escorted vacation might be your most affordable option. On an escorted vacation, your itinerary is prearranged, and that itinerary likely includes many popular tourist attractions and destinations. Such vacations are typically offered at a set price per person, and

that price typically includes the cost of transportation, which can be considerable when traveling abroad. • Pack light. Anyone who has traveled by air over the last decade is likely aware that baggage costs are another thing to consider when establishing a vacation budget. While men and women flying alone might be able to grin and bear it with regard to baggage fees, parents traveling with kids in tow might be forced to shell out hundreds of dollars in baggage fees

alone. When packing for a vacation, pack light so you aren't left paying hefty baggage fees before boarding your outgoing and returning flights. • Familiarize yourself with local tipping standards. Tipping standards vary depending on the country, so it pays to research tipping standards before traveling abroad so you aren't unnecessarily overtipping. Many resorts already include the cost of a tip when billing guests for

When is the best time to pre-plan your funeral? The best time to begin making your prearrangements is NOW, while you’re thinking about it. While some people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s may think it’s too early to preplan, people who do say that prearranging their funerals is smart financial planning and gives them added peace of mind knowing they aren’t leaving this burden to family members. With the arrival of spring comes the start of the construction season. That was evident in the Village of Chipman recently when crews with Nikiforuk Construction replaced fire hydrants the week of April 28th. Pat Tomkow said a number of fire hydrants were replaced as well as two water main valves. These were projects that were initially planned for last year, but had to be put over to this year,

added Tomkow due to inclement weather. While she hasn’t received a bill from the company yet, Tomkow estimates the projects will cost between

Make Yourself Heard on Pensions

Albertans are making themselves heard. They’ve stood up for workplace pensions. They’ve let their MLAs know that laws designed to undermine workplace pension plans are unacceptable. And the public has made the government pause. Bills 9 and 10 are being put to public hearings, and won’t return to the legislature until fall. Albertans now have an opportunity to discuss real retirement security for all. Tell the Alberta government to strengthen — not undermine — retirement security. And ask the Conservative government to do something 14052AA0 for Albertans who don’t have workplace pension plans by joining all the other provinces in supporting the expansion of the Canada Pension Plan. Find out more at TruthAboutAlbertaPensions.ca

Contact your MLA. Tell them to stop messing with your retirement savings.

The Lamont Leader (Lamont, Alberta), May 13, 2014 - 23

Town of Lamont welcomes new deputy chief administrator Looking at a balance between tax base and user base - McCullagh Cory McCullagh has a systematic approach to everything. That should prove essential and beneficial in his new role as the Town of Lamont’s new deputy chief administrative officer. So whether its infrastructure, economic development, parks and recreation, services and programs; McCullagh says you have to have good, sound strategies in place in order to create success and build strong communities. With a Bachelor of Arts in Recreation, Sport, and Tourism as well as a Master of Business Administration Degree, both from the University of Alberta; McCullagh has a wealth of education and experience under his belt. He served as the Director of Recreation for the City of Lloydminster

for several years, before returning to the City of Edmonton. McCullagh said the job opening in Lamont was very enticing because it would offer a “new opportunity for professional growth and fulfill his ultimate career goal of becoming a chief administrative officer of a municipality. Part of his long-term plan includes attaining the National Advanced Certificate in Local A u t h o r i t i e s Administration (Local Government Certificate) through the U of A’s Faculty of Extension as well as eventually relocating his family to Lamont. McCullagh will be providing advice on policy development, planning, review of business cases, in addition to being a key advisor and strategist for council. “The key is to have the

free exchange of information...To make sure elected officials are

informed of opportunities and have the chance to provide input and foster ideas.” He firmly believes there has to be a balance between the tax base and the user base and the impact each one has on

direction and level of service for residents and business owners. As far as his own personal view on t a x e s , McCullagh said that if you take a dollar out of the commun i t y ’ s hands, you have to have a business case for reinvesting wisely and clearly demonstrate the benefit to the community. “You have to have a systematic approach to everything.” McCullagh added that infrastructure, land, housing, and labor force has to tie into current realities and the overall

vision. That is where the strategic plan comes into play. “Elk Island National Park (EINP) is a jewel. It’s the most underrated park in Canada,” said McCullagh, who would like to help develop tourism opportunities with EINP. “It’s all about bringing money into the community and keeping those dollars here.”

While definitely underrated, having developed parks and recreational facilities; are also keys to growth. So over the next four years, McCullagh will be helping elected officials get past the past and move towards the future with a strong focus and sound startegies to make those goals and objectives a reality.
