Semi roll over forces closure of Highway 855 Michelle Pinon Editor

Firefighters with Mundare Fire and Rescue were called out to a roll-over accident north of the community the afternoon of July 9. Highway 855 was closed for several hours while the metal pipes were reloaded onto tow trucks.

A semi carrying a load of pipe turned over on its side spilling its load of pipe on Wednesday, July 9th north of Mundare on Secondary Highway 855 at Township Road 544.

Crews with Mundar e Fire & Rescue were called out to the emer gency late in the afternoon and stayed several hours. Fire Chief Glenda Dales said it was very fortunate that the driver was not injured in the r ollover that was caused by catching a back tir e on the shoulder of the r oad. During the process of corr ecting the course the

load of steel pipe shifted and caused the trailer to turn over and dump the pipes into the ditch.

Dales said it was also very fortunate that no other vehicles wer e in close proximity during the accident. “It could have been much worse,� stated Dales, who was very relieved no one was injured.

Firefighters spent several hours out in the blazing sun, with a temperatur e of 30 degrees celsius while crews transfered the load of pipe back onto a flat deck and the truck to be towed away.

The highway was r e-opened later that evening.

Wild Rose symbol turns into thorny issue Michelle Pinon Editor

Next spring the pr ovince plans on rolling out new licence plates.

But in the meantime of ficials with Service Alberta are having to deal with the thorny issue of not including the symbol of the W ild Rose or the familiar slogan W ild Rose Country on its r edesigned licence plate.

In all thr ee versions of the redesigned plate, that wer e unveiled on July 8, none of the designs included the W ild Rose.

That omission has caused quite a stir, with mor e than 1/2 million Albertans going online, and 129,000 people logging onto alberta.ca to fill out the survey.

In response the W ildrose Party launched an online poll of its own on July 11 to give Albertans a voice on a new licence plate slogan.

Wildrose Party leader Danielle Smith also challenged Service Alberta Minister Doug Griffiths to do the same to pr ove that scr ubbing the phase ‘W ild Rose Country’ is not about partisan politics.

According to Smith, who has received incredible feedback from Albertans, she said that it is important residents have an opportunity to not only choose the design, but have their say when it comes to the province’s slogan.

“From the feedback we’ve received, many Albertans have told us they feel a gr eat deal of pride in their pr ovince and many don’t want to be defined by just a government website. Our online poll will give people a voice and hopefully pressure Mr. Griffiths to give Albertans a chance to decide on the slogan on Alberta’s new licence plate.

Albertans will have until Aug. 19 to vote on one of the pr oposed licence plates. The design that receives the most votes will be selected for the new plate.

As stated in a government pr ess release, “Our current licence plate is more than 30-years-old and lacks features to help make our roads and communities safer. This new plate will make it easier for police to spot vehicles that ar e unregistered, uninsured or stolen,” stated Griffiths.

This is because the new plates will have a r eflective coating that makes the plate easier to see under low light conditions and easier for infrared equipment to read.

As to whether Albertans will have the choice of keeping their old licence plate or getting a new one, they will have to get a new plate from their r egistry agent when they r enew their r egistration.

Beginning next spring, annual vehicle registration will cost five dollars more to help cover the costs of pr oduction and implementation. Griffiths press secretary Kathleen Range told the Lamont Leader changing the plate was for safety r easons and would fall in line with other municipalities across North America who have made the switch to plates with reflective coatings and website addresses. She said the address is a gr eat opportunity to promote Alberta and all of the things that the pr ovince has to offer.

Range said that if the department hears loud and clear fr om Albertans that they want a dif ferent slogan that the government may consider it.

While their was no cost to have 3M produce the proposed designs, Range said it would be 3M who would be providing the technology to pr oduce the clear r eflective coating on the license plates.

As to the cost of manufacturing and distributing the new plates, Range did not r eply to that question prior to deadline.

Motorcycle Ride For Dad prostate cancer fundraiser most successful to date Michelle Pinon Editor

The final numbers ar e in.

The Motorcycle Ride For Dad fundraiser in support of prostrate cancer research raised a total

of $269,950.32 Ride For Dad co-chair Chris Reeves said, “This is the most raised in our area to date.”

The numbers don’t reflect the $30 r egistration fee char ged to each rider or funds raised in the ride day raffle, 50/50

tickets, merchandise or funds picked up along the route such as donations from people in Andrew, Mundare and Lamont.

The total number of registered riders was 1,011, but the actual head count was close to 1,250

riders, noted Reeves.

“So, our entir e ride weekend was most successful.”

She is also pr oud to state that 100 per cent of the funds raised by the rider pledges goes directly to pr ostate cancer research and awar eness in our area. “We support research projects at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton.

Reeves went on to say , “We are so pleased with the continued support we get from the motorcycle riding community as well as the continued support of over 150 volunteers as well as the wonderful support fr om the communities along our route; Bon Accord, Andrew, Mundare and Lamont. Our Ride For Dad committee of 20 energetic and committed folks couldn’t do this without you. On behalf of our entir e Ride For Dad committee, we thank you.”

The route for next year’s ride will be decided some time between now and December .

Letter: Plenty of unanswered questions to recycling issues, says Lamont resident The new garbage system r ecently implemented has caused a bit of a stir among residents. Questions abound and answers are few. Letters have been written and calls made to the town and yet, there is still a great divide between what is known and what is r umour.

I am one of those r esidents and I’ve asked many questions. I filled out a ‘Request, Challenge and Suggestion’ form on the town’s website in the hopes my concerns would be r ead by council members. In r esponse, a town employee answered back in the most condescending way. It was not helpful and, if anything, further reinforced my opinion that the town is distancing itself from its citizens.

We have questions, but no one seems to be giving us the answers. Earlier in the year the town hir ed a Communications Manager. Did you know that? I bet the majority of those in town did not. I just learned about it

a month ago. I’m not sure what his/her job entails (it should be obvious though, right?), but I can tell you one thing, the communication in this town couldn’t be worse.

Some bad apples in town abused the recycle system we had by thr owing deer carcasses and used oil in their bins. Because of that a new system was decided on (with no input fr om us pesky citizens) that takes away our recycle bin and costs us an extra $5 a month to run.

Pamphlets were handed out. But many residents were still caught unawares and claim to never have received a pamphlet. Instead, learning about it by getting a citation fr om the garbage company for having recycle in their yard waste bin.

Suggestions have been made to the town: “Let’s have a town hall meeting for residents to attend wher e we can hear what’s going on and have the

opportunity to ask questions”. Their answer? “We’ve tried that in the past and attendance was too low.”

They also said “if we had to ask the public for input on everything we wouldn’t make any decisions”. Not a good precedent to make and highly insulting to Lamont r esidents. No one is suggesting they ask for our input on everything, but things that are going to make a big impact, like garbage pickup (or when they are going to finally pave that road in front of the Burger Baron), should be br ought to the table in a more open manner.

Change is tough, but many residents in this town feel excluded and we want to be part of the conversation. W riting information on the back of my utility bill isn’t cutting it (we never looked on the back of the bill: too shocked at the front). The Lamont Leader is no longer put into everyone’s mailboxes and the internet is only serviced by some.

I was told by the town employee, “if you don’t like it, you could always run for office and attend council meetings.” I’m so tir ed of that tir ed argument. Never mind that I contribute in my own way to this community. Never mind that I exercise my right to vote in every election. Never mind that I have three young childr en and would require childcare so that I can attend council meetings or town hall meetings or that I work shift work and the only time I see my family is for thirty minutes a day. Nope, I’m not good enough until I have put my name on that ballot.

I shouldn’t have to feel obligated to explain myself to anyone. But the town, on the other hand, should explain themselves.

Infrastructure tops needs list Michelle Pinon Editor

Before Wildrose MLA Shane Saskiw started listening to the questions and concerns of Lamont town councillors during a recent meeting, he made mention of some of the changes the PC government has implemented during the last session Saskiw, who r epresents the Lac La Biche, St. Paul, T wo Hills constituency for the Wildrose Party, said things had been very interesting at the legislature, but with the r esignation of Premier Alison Redford and the PC Party’s search for a new leader, that a lot of legislation has been stalled.

He also pointed to the axing of the Summer Temporary Employment Program, Water For Life Program, discontinuance of P3 funding for schools and uncertainty surrounding the curr ent

Municipal Sustainability Initiative and changes to the Municipal Government Act. Saskiw also took a few jabs about the scrapping of care clinics, the pr oposed sale of AltaLink (which has yet to r eceive approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission), and unpopular pension reforms that wer e given the kibosh by unions.

The Wildrose will be introducing four policies this summer.

They include: building urban and rural communities, excellence in education, caring for seniors, children and the vulnerable, and responsible energy development.

Mayor Bill Skinner said there is a “huge need” for infrastr ucture in the community as impending growth is placing more pressure on the municipality to be able to do the necessary repairs and upgrades that are required.

Saskiw said the

Wildrose have a ‘Moving Alberta Forward Plan’ that would involve partnering with municipalities to help them meet their residents’ needs.

He briefly outlined the 10/10 Community Infrastructure Transfer, which is a tax-fr ee solution to municipal funding.

The Wildrose 10/10 Community Transfer would “remove the need for new municipal taxes while allowing municipalities to meet their needs with mor e funding than they curr ently receive from the PC government.”

Under the plan, 10 per cent of pr ovincial tax revenue and 10 per cent of budget surpluses would be transferr ed directly to Alberta’s towns, cities and municipal districts using a formula devised in consultation with municipalities.

According to Saskiw , the 10/10 community infrastructure transfer

would see $1.97 billion flow through to municipalities in 2015-’16 compared to the $1.49 billion they are scheduled to get under the PC’s system.

As far as gr owing a community’s tax base, Saskiw said it was something his party was looking at and perhaps devising a system of based on percentage of r oyalties.

Having a capital plan that is priortized by the public with a list based on objective criteria would also fall under their plan.

While accommodating the needs of a gr owing population are difficult, Saskiw says the Wildrose is committed to pr oviding the best possible system and services for infrastructure, housing, employment, and seniors care.

Heartland booming with $20 billion in planned investment Michelle Pinon Editor

From refining to power generation and pipelines to rail lines, a host of industrial pr ojects are planned or under construction in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland.

Since Sherritt International located in the area 60 years ago, the Heartland region has amassed more than $25 billion in industrial investment. This industry clustering is a draw for new projects.

Much of the planning and infrastructure already exist, in addition to the natural opportunity for syner gies with byproducts and feedstock.

Projects many people are familiar with, such as bitumen pipelines and petrochemical processing, are part of appr oximately $20 billion in planned investment in the Heartland over the next decade. However , there are also unique projects exploring innovative technology, utilizing world leading environmental practices and transforming raw resources into higher value products.

“There are several projects already operating or under constr uction in the Heartland that will r educe CO2 emissions by a combined 16.2 million tonnes annually. Projects like these are significant in decreasing our r egion’s environmental foot-

print,” explains Neil Shelly, Executive Director of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association.

Two projects in particular involve carbon capture and storage: Shell Quest will captur e CO2 from Shell’s Upgrader to safely transport it 80 km north where it will be permanently stored 2 km underground. Expected completion is in 2015.

Enhance Energy’s Alberta Carbon T runk Line will gather CO2 from the Stur geon Refinery (under construction) and Agrium, and transport it to mature oil fields in south central Alberta for enhanced oil r ecovery.

From Where I Sit: I’m Sick

By Hazel Anaka For Ukrainians the world over the curr ent crisis in Ukraine is tragic.

It has captured the attention and concern of thinking people everywhere. It’s been dubbed the greatest threat to world security in the 21st Century. World leaders have been weighing in on the matter since late November 2013 when

the first grass r oots protests began in Euromaidan, Kyiv’s central square.

The protests arose over exiled President Viktor Yanukovych’s refusal to sign an agr eement with the European Union as he slithered ever closer to Putin’s Russia. The number and frequency of outraged comments from world leaders, historians, and thinkers has increased in dir ect proportion to the irresponsible actions of Russia.

Canadians can be proud of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s loud and increasingly pointed, personal attacks on Putin and his actions.

Cynics may say he’s playing to the 1.2 million Canadians who claim Ukrainian heritage.

Whether or not that is a factor is immaterial in my opinion. In this, he is taking a leadership r ole

that overshadows the apparently weak Obama response. Of course it remains to be seen if all the rhetoric, sanctions and harsh thr eats of increasingly strong responses penetrate the blockhead Putin.

For a man who seems to care so much about what the world thinks of him: think spending $50 billion on the Sochi Olympics, Vladimir Putin is surprisingly oblivious to what the entire globe is saying to him. Getting kicked out of the G8: big deal. Being sanctioned and denounced by the United Nations General Assembly: another day at the of fice. Joining the company of Kim Jung-Il, Chavez, Mugabe, alQaddafi, Berlusconi and other tyrants: you misunderstand.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel who has

spoken on the telephone with Putin several times has told the media that he appears “delusional.”

The now G7 leaders moved their June meeting from Sochi to Brussels.

Putin has brushed off the fr eezing of assets and r estricting travel by Russian politicians as meaningless.

I spent some time listening to a live stream of the UN debate about a resolution urging a peaceful resolution to disputes and conflicts. In virtually every case the individual speakers spoke of the r ule of law and the sover eignty of a nation’s borders and the unacceptable actions of Russia.

I don’t want war . I don’t want violence. I don’t want anyone to be hurt. Well, except Putin and his ilk. Better men than him have been assassinated while mon-

sters like this live on in affluence terrorizing and killing hundreds or thousands of innocents. The corruption of these tyrants is legendary . I wonder if Yanukovych will ever finish building his 8000 squar e metre mansion on the Black Sea. After all a guy needs

a break from his primary palace, doesn’t he?

I’m sick of the corr uption, the entitlement, the insanity, the big talk and the impotence of civilized society to fix things.

God alone knows what will happen next, fr om where I sit.

Mundare Green Thumbs busy in downtown Community Garden

The Community Garden in Mundare is a source of pride and joy for Debra Raymakers and her growing group of enthusiastic gr een thumbs who have been planting, watering, weeding since it opened on June 14.

“It has been a wonderful thing,” says Raymaker , who has managed to put the fun joy of learning and discovery into gardening.

Raymakers says the childr en have great imaginations and are always putting their special touches to the downtown project which has become a source of pride to them. “It gives them ownership and respect in the community,” says Raymakers. In addition the children, about 25 in total, want to show of f the plants they planted to their parents, and keep a close eye on their plants (sometimes visiting the raised beds on a daily basis).

Even though Mundar e is in the heart of r ural Alberta, Raymakers says some of the childr en have never planted a gar den, don’t know how to plant, what to plant, how they gr ow and ripen, when they are ready for picking and eating.

Mayor Charlie Gargus and his wife Debby say the Community Garden is a wonderful outlet for the children, their par ents, as well as community r esidents, who pr ovide feedback and information and simply love to visit the garden patch.

Through Alberta Rural Sustainable Alternatives Netweek (ARSAN) and Communities In Bloom (CIB) committee, in co-or dination with Raymakers, they have been able to resurrect the project.

Gargus says there has been a direct spin-off as people in the community ar e now planting a gar den at Sister Martha’s. “People ar e becoming mor e aware and getting involved in gardening,” adds Debby.

The Gargus’ along with Raymakers ar e excited about moving the classroom from Parkland Farm to another area of town and start of fering programs to school children as well as local r esidents in the future. “It’s a pilot pr oject and we’r e hoping it’ll develop into something bigger,” adds Raymakers.

Everyone involved with the Community Garden is having a wonderful time, and with their gr owing passion and commitment, the pr oject will surely be successful and continue to grow in new and unimagined ways.

Lamont couple celebrate 65th wedding anniversary Michelle Pinon Editor

July 14 will always be a gem of a day for couple, Marcel and Jean Fontaine.

Yesterday, the Lamont r esidents officially reached their sapphire (65th) wedding anniversary.

While Sheron from LA Hair Designs was cutting and styling their hair last Friday she learned the Fontaine’s would be celebrating their 65th wedding.

Sheron insisted their hair cuts be on the house, and convinced the couple’s daugther Jo-Ann to go over to the Lamont Leader to let them in on the wonderful news.

Jo-Ann, who says her par ents are “very private people;” but thought she’d take the hair dresser’s advice anyway. A short while later I was sitting in their living r oom at Morley Young Manor. The impromptu visit was taken in stride, and the couple eagerly talked about their courtship, wedding, and family.

“A friend of mine fr om Winnipeg introduced us,” said Marcel. They hit it of f, and before you knew it, Marcel was travelling fr om Winnipeg to Belleville (145 miles) every weekend to visit Jean.

“I liked him. And he like me. And we got married,” stated Jean matter -of-factly with a big smile on her face. Often Jean’s father would tease her and ask: “What are you marrying a Frenchman for?” But Jean says her parents hit it off with Marcel and vice-versa, Jean got along very well with his par ents.

Everything worked out well, and they raised their family of thr ee daughters: Donna Mar cia, Jo-Ann and Michele Jacqueline. They r esided in Kenora before moving out west to Edmonton in 1968. They moved to Lamont about thr ee years ago and enjoy spending as much time as possible with their thr ee daughters, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

“Marriage was good for us,” said Jean, who said it was simply love that made for the wonderful life they have have shared together. Sitting hand in hand on the couch it is plain to see how much they respect and adore each other 65 years after they said “I do.”

Keeping the farm or ranch from generation to generation and actively operating is an impressive achievement for any Alberta family. The Government of Alberta wishes to recognize these special families who built the foundation of prairie farming and ranching.

The Alberta Century Farm & Ranch Award salutes those families who have continuously owned and actively operated the same land for a minimum of 100 years. It is important that these families be recognized. If you know of a century farm or ranch family in your area, pass this information along and have them complete the application form!
