Wattage

Wattage is a new performance series produced by Capital Fringe. Wattage features three different, new works of theater that examine the thread of self through explorations in global citizenship – tradition, environment, identity – and shed light on the nature of human survival. Wattage takes place at Fort Fringe in Downtown Washington DC. The three shows run in repertory doing up to 17 performances each. “Wattage marks a new beginning for Capital Fringe in our fifth anniversary year. Not only are we producing two shows we are also creating a third – a brand new work devised by an ensemble of DC actors and theater artists and led by Capital Fringe’s Producing Artistic Director, Scot McKenzie. McKenzie says, “I am excited for Capital Fringe to finally step out onto the stage by producing new performing art and exploring the avenue of collective collaboration.” Two of the three shows in Wattage were created by an ensemble through a shared, collaborative process.

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF FACTION OF FOOLS If all that survived were notes like “Hamlet contemplates suicide,” “Romeo and Juliet perform their farewell dialogue,” or “During a storm, King Lear does his rant,” you would probably not know the name of William Shakespeare. Such is the state of Commedia dell’Arte. The players of “the Italian Comedy” in the 15001600s revolutionized theatre, astounded audiences, and influenced subsequent entertainers from Shakespeare and Moliere to the Marx Brothers and SNL. Yet perhaps you’ve never heard of “Commedia dell’Arte” because their theatrical masterpieces were not written down. Commedia was pure theatre—live, spontaneous, and “in the moment.” With the drop of the curtain, it was over. All that survives are glowing reports and fragmentary plot scenarios including one entitled The House with Two Doors, which consists of short notes used to help performers remember the plot. The extant synopsis is simply the skeleton of a play that lived and died over 300 years ago. Beginning with these notes we’ve used ensemble improvisation to re-write long forgotten dialogue and re-invent classic physical comedy routines, hoping in a sense to put flesh back on the bones and reanimate this long dead comic masterpiece. This is our version of their story. Viva la Commedia.

Matthew R. Wilson.

YOURS, ISABEL “American women, who had worked and sacrificed during World War II to help defend America and democracy, built their lives around their families and communities during the early postwar years. Women told themselves that they were not interested in pursuing individual goals, seeking higher education, or having a career. Before the 1950’s were over, however, American women began to notice that there was something missing from the American dream.” -Judith Bellafaire, “Women in the World War II and Postwar Eras” Isabel McMeniman and Nicholas D’Angelo were avid letter writers throughout their early relationship. Through their correspondence, we catch a glimpse of how America began to change, one woman at a time.
