Tickets are now on sale for a charity gala planned for later this spring. Ladner’s Robyn Thomson is in training because in August she will climb Mount Kilimanjaro in an effort to raise $10,000 for Delta Hospice. She will be joined by friend Alison Hogg, who also grew up in Ladner, who is doing the climb to benefit the Heart and Stroke Foundation. To help in reaching their fundraising goals, the two women are planning The Kili Gala. The event is scheduled for June 5 at the Ladner Community Centre from 7 p.m. until midnight. The gala will feature entertainment, including African drumming, a DJ and dancing, as well as 50/50 and raffle draws, and refreshments. Currently, Thomson said, there are more than two dozen prizes to be raffled off. Tickets for The Kili Gala cost $20, which covers
admission and two raffle tickets. All of the net proceeds from the event will go directly to the Delta Hospice Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Tickets can be purchased by e-mailing Thomson at climbforhospice@gmail. com or at Open Space Yoga and Evolutions Salon. Thomson became involved with the hospice after seeing how helpful the services are to those in need. Three years ago, Thomson’s world was turned upside down when her close friend’s husband, Kirk Holifield, was murdered. Holifield, 35, died after he was found shot several times in his truck on the side of Westminster Highway in Richmond in the early hours of Jan. 11, 2007. Thomson said that she, along with Kirk’s widow Elli and his parents Michele and Bert all sought help from Delta Hospice as they dealt with the senseless
Robyn Thomson Climbing Kilimanjaro death of their son, husband and friend. “Without hospice I don’t think any of us would have gotten through it,” she said. Since then, Thomson has volunteered as a member of the hospice’s vigil team but she said she wanted to do more and set her sights on conquering Mount Kilimanjaro, which is in Tanzania, Africa, and raising $10,000.
