Joe Dart is a national high school champion and the news just keeps better for the Grade 12 Delta secondary student. The 17-year-old has been turning heads this past week in Ontario — the site of the 2010 Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Championships and the National Junior Team Trials. In St. Catherines on the renowned Royal Canadian Henley course, Dart captured the senior men’s singles event last Sunday with an impressive three-second victory over his nearest rival. He then moved onto Welland and the International Flatwater Centre for the national trials where he earned a spot on the Canadian team that will be competing in this summer’s CanAm Mex Junior Regatta in Tennessee. Making these accomplishments even more impressive is Dart being content to continue his training at the club where he was introduced to competitive rowing — the Delta Deas Rowing Club. Typically DDRC’s top juniors move on to bigger clubs or private schools, just like his former teammate —national team member Eric Jackson. But Dart has stayed put working with DDRC coach Mark Darling and spending a lot of time on his own as the club’s only Junior “A” classified athlete. “Joe has succeeded his own expectations,” said his proud mom Bonnie Dart. “He has gained his success using mental strength, physical fitness and determination. He enjoys Delta Deas and always makes sure the (competitive) bar is raised.” Dart will be back home next week to focus on provincial exams.

Schuss produces seven points in Islanders debut MARK BOOTH

Logan Schuss made his long awaited debut with the Delta Islanders on Thursday night and the Langley Knights wished he had stayed back east. Fresh off his outstanding season at Ohio State University, Schuss scored one goal and set up six others as the visiting Islanders crushed the last place Knights 26-10. The Islanders had hoped to see the Ladner standout two weeks earlier when he was scheduled to fly in to Vancouver for a pair of weekend games, however, that plan was scrapped when he was asked to attend another awards banquet

and became the first-ever Ohio State freshman to be named an All-American. Now Schuss is back home for the rest of the summer and hopes to have a significant role in helping the sixth place Islanders make a move in the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League standings. The win over the Knights improved Delta’s record to 5-8 and the locals should have an excellent chance at moving closer to .500 when seventh place Port Coquitlam visits Ladner tonight (8 p.m.). “Logan just gives our entire team an emotional lift,” said Islanders general manager and head coach Greg Rennie. “Obviously he is a great player but

he also brings a positive attitude and is a natural leader. He has the ability to not only make other players around him better but push them as well.” Among the players to immediately benefit was Carlton Schuss in what might his last opportunity to play box lacrosse with his younger brother. The 21-year-old had a career night, finishing with 11 points, including five goals. Mike Mallory continued his outstanding rookie season with 10 points to vault to second place in league scoring. Also making an impact in his Islanders debut was Nathan Clare. The local product was acquired earlier in the week from the

Anything less and Rennie will take a serious looking at moving some of his veteran players prior to the league’s July 1 trading deadline. “We have been beat up by injuries but it’s time to make a push in these games,” added Rennie. “With Logan back and Nathan giving us more scoring depth, I think we can do that.” Boxla Bits... Once Robbie Campbell returns from a bruised heel, the Islanders will finally be firing at full strength. Rennie suggests fourth place is still within reach but the Islanders will have to get on a significant roll to get past Burnaby and Nanaimo. After hosting the Saints, they meet the league’s top two teams — Coquitlam (Wednesday) and unbeaten New Westminster (next Saturday)‚ before heading to the Island to face Nanaimo and Victoria.
