Message From John Rose, Chair, Hospice Board of Directors & Filomena Nalewajek, Chief Executive Officer

W

e are pleased to report that 2009/10 was a strong year for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. We are grateful for our many community partners and donors whose generous support helped us serve more BC children and families than ever before. Our founding partner, the Canucks for Kids Fund, once again made a significant contribution to Canuck Place. In addition to the funds we received, we were so fortunate to have the support of the Aquilini family, Vancouver Canucks management, coaches, staff, players and their families. Thank you for continuing to work with us. We also want to thank the Government of BC for their ongoing partnership with us. Through various initiatives, Canuck Place is collaborating with the Government and regional/local practitioners to build community capacity across the province in the field of pediatric palliative care. Over the years, we’ve set and achieved a very high standard for quality of care, and we

will continue to reach even underway and we are actively higher. This year, Canuck Place working toward our goal of raising received full accreditation from $9.75 million. Our plan is to begin Accreditation Canada, meeting construction this fall. We are a remarkable 97% of the more delighted by the support and than 500 quality standards. We’re interest in our project, and hope very proud of our staff team who that more partners and friends of led the organization through this Canuck Place become inspired to process and are thrilled by our get involved as well. Canuck Place mourns bold visionary - former Board Chair, Dr. Donald Rix “In his three years as Chair, Dr. Rix brought his philanthropic spirit and entrepreneurial drive to our organization,” said Filomena Nalewajek, CEO of Canuck Place. “That same determination that led him to great success in the business world was evident in his work with us.”

“Dr. Rix had a vision that every child in BC with a life-threatening illness and their family should have access to Canuck Place and he made this his top priority while he served as Chair,” reflected John Rose, current Chair of the Canuck Place Board. “Dr. Rix encouraged us to be bold. He felt strongly that no child or family should be left behind and instilled a confidence in all of us that we can ultimately realize that dream.

It is because of his vision and determination that we are now about to begin construction on a second hospice in Abbotsford,” remembered Nalewajek. “He will be sorely missed as a visionary, as a mentor and as a wonderful, caring friend.”
