Mentored by legendary bluesman Albert Collins, self-taught guitar slinger Coco Montoya went on to become the guitarist for John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers for ten years before leading his own band. Billboard called Montoya “the real McCoy in a world of blues guitar pretenders.” Montoya plays with an emotional intensity few string benders possess – and he plays left-handed and upside down in the style of Albert King and Jimi Hendrix.

Walter Trout’s practical schooling in blues started when he arrived in Los Angeles in 1973 and got gigs behind Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Finis Tasby, Pee Wee Crayton, Lowell Fulsom, Percy Mayfield and Joe Tex. But the real turning point was his tenure with British blues giant John Mayall. Trout became part of the Bluesbreakers’ lineage of great guitarists along with Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor. Beginning in 1984, he shared sixstring duties with Coco Montoya in Mayall’s band, creating a flexible guitar dynamic that helped provide the Bluesbreakers a renaissance that returned the group to the apex of the international blues touring circuit. Trout began leading his own group in 1989, and cut his debut album, Life In the Jungle, rapidly becoming a star in Europe. His first stateside release, 1998’s critically heralded Walter Trout, started him down the road toward becoming the fixture of the American blues-rock scene that he is today.

Downtown Festivals Coming Soon Of course, we look forward to presenting the 2012 edition of our downtown festivals: Taste of Canton, Canton Blues Festival, Vintage Canton and Light Up Downtown. We hope that you will take time to enjoy and participate in these high quality events in our center city. Downtown Living The Downtown Living subcommittee of the Special Improvement District has been developing a plan to expand apartment living downtown. Road trips have been made to Wooster and Hamilton, Ohio, to view examples of how these cities have approached urban living development. The goal of the committee is to have a demonstration project up and running in 2012. Look for more information on this important subject in the future. Best wishes for a wonderful spring and summer season, and we look forward to another successful year downtown. Summertime means train-hopping fun for visitors to downtown Canton This summer, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad and SARTA will team up again to give visitors to our region a grand view of all that downtown Canton has to offer! From June through August, the CVSR will operate trains to and from downtown Canton, with visitors taking day trips from any station in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, including Akron’s Northside Station. The train arrives downtown around noon, and passengers have the opportunity to hop on the Downtown Loop provided by SARTA. The bus will take visitors around town, with stops at the McKinley Monument, First Ladies Historic Site, Pro Football Hall of Fame, Canton Classic Car Museum, the Canton Museum of Art, and galleries and studios in the arts district, along with any festivals happening downtown.

Tickets for the train ride are just $15 for adults, $10 for children (age 3 to 12). Wednesday trips are just $10 for everyone! Admission to each attraction is separate (where applicable). CVSR offers similar journeys from the Canton Lincoln Highway Station in downtown Canton north to Akron and Peninsula.

5

The CVSR is celebrating its 40th year of passenger rail service this year. The tracks and scenic views between Akron and Canton are historic, as the tracks were originally built in 1880 to transport coal, crops and passengers from south of Tuscarawas County to the developing steel mills in Cleveland. Today, along those same tracks, you can see the remnants on what made Northeast Ohio a growing and important state! For tickets and information, visit www. CVSR.com.

Take a ‘foodieventure’ downtown with Canton Food Tours Beginning this summer, Barbara Abbott and her team are extending you a flavorful temptation with Canton Food Tours, an invite to locals and visitors alike to “savor the city” known for everything from presidents to gridiron heroes, from an explosive arts and culture district to reinvented rust-belt industries. Each tour offers six or more tastings, ones substantial enough to amount to a full meal combined, and tourists also get a goody bag. Tour guests will walk or ride along in the food tour van, making stops along the way to see the sights of the city. Take a Canton Food Tour and you can discover what’s in your own backyard the old fashioned way: by walking, exploring, tasting, looking, listening and shaking hands. And with more than 20 tasting partners in place, many of them in downtown Canton, Abbott’s foodieventure gives local restaurants and tourism organizations a boost in sales, but more importantly, in exposure. “Meeting business owners, hearing their stories and seeing their passion fosters a connection and understanding that makes you want to support them and see them succeed,” said Abbott of the opportunities she hopes to create for local restaurateurs and other stops along the tours.

This summer’s launch is happening with three tours that will quickly become staples of the organization. Plus, there’s even the opportunity to customize your own tour, the perfect solution for families, companies and local groups. Warehouse District Food Tour: Top to bottom this tour has it all – enjoy a bird’s eye view atop Chase Tower, then dine beneath the bustling streets in a cozy underground retreat. You’ll be amazed at what’s inside seemingly abandoned warehouses, including a cutting edge clothing and furniture design studio. Plus, you’ll marvel at a demonstration by skilled baristas at Muggswigz Coffee and Tea Company! Enjoy six great tastings including a special dessert made exclusively for Canton Food Tours. Tickets are $48 and tours are held Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. Presidential Plate Food Tour: Haven’t been invited to a formal dinner at the White House? See what you’ve been missing! View original White House China and drool over State Dinner menus at the National First Ladies’ Library. Learn why Henry Ford’s visit to Canton ignited the auto industry and see rare automobiles for yourself. Top off the tour with a visit to Taggart’s Ice Cream Parlor and discover the Bittner! Tickets are $45 and tours are held Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Run, Canton, Run! Food Tour: This healthy food tour focuses on the Canton Marathon and the build-up to inaugural race day. But you can rest your feet – at least this time around…On this van-based tour, you’ll drive the southeastern portion of the Marathon route, stopping along the way for healthy food samples, expert tips on nutrition, glutenfree eating, running shoes, historical and cultural highlights, and lots of marathon fun facts and trivia. Tickets are $45 and tours are held Saturdays from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. The one thing you need to know about a Canton Food Tours experience is that you’ve never been on an adventure that tasted so good. And don’t worry, Abbott is already busy cooking up new tour concepts for this fall and next year. For specific details about each of the tours, and to book online, visit www. CantonFoodTours.com.

Feet on the Street: Inaugural Canton Marathon

O

n June 17, thousands of runners will find their foothold in history, crossing the finish line of the inaugural Canton Marathon. Whether for getting in shape, staying that way, or for charity, Canton’s own marathon will be off and running and Stark County will welcome newest in a long line of sporting events. Three years ago, Stephen Mears, owner of the Canton-based ad agency StrategyONE, and longtime friend and colleague Julia Dick, owner of PR firm MOLA Productions, started taking stock of some serious running statistics. “We started looking at the national trends. Running as a sport has experienced a 60 percent increase in the past 10 years. And then when we looked at marathons in various markets, we found that Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh and Akron, and others, are selling out every year,” explained Mears.

Christmas in July Once again, Arcadia Grille owner Maria Byington will be bringing ‘holiday’ cheer to downtown for the entire month of July. While we can only hope this won’t be a

They decided to bring a marathon to Canton, and announced on June 17, 2010 that the inaugural Canton Marathon would hit the streets two years to the day. Mears and Dick are preparing for the 6,000 runners expected this first year. They believe that with time, the Canton Marathon will grow into an event with an economic impact that rivals the other big sporting events in the area, bringing millions of dollars to the county. “On average, runners bring 1.5 guests with them to the race, so we believe that the businesses in Stark County will see an increase in business as a result of the weekend,” said Mears. The Canton Marathon includes activities for all variety of runners, beginning on Saturday, June 16, with the Kids’ Ultimate Marathon Dash for children age three to 11. On Sunday, runners will experience the full marathon, a 26.2-mile course certified by the United States Track and Field Association, which means that runners can use official Canton Marathon times to quality for the Boston Marathon. As designed, the course can potentially accommodate up to 12,000 runners as the event grows in future years. The full marathon, along with the five-person full marathon team relay, the 13.1 half marathon and the 10k race (6.2 miles) will run through Canton and Greater Stark County, crossing over I-77 on the Pro Football Hall of Fame Bridge. The starting line is at Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, and the finish line is on Hall of Fame Field at Fawcett Stadium. A portion of the race will bring feet to the streets of downtown Canton. The mission of the Canton Marathon is to provide resources to help foster and promote the importance of health and wellness for all citizens in Stark County. To that end, every race registrant has the opportunity to designate a portion of their registration fee to charity partners when they reserve their slot in the marathon. Net proceeds from marathon operations will be used to establish a managed fund to disperse grant money to qualifying organizations that target children’s health, fitness and nutrition issues. For more information and to register, visit CantonMarathon.com.
