Strategic Plan Update

In 2014, the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce celebrates our 100th anniversary of advancing economic growth and community development in Canton/Stark County. This milestone has given our organization the perfect opportunity to assess where we’ve been, where we’re going, and how we can better serve our members and the region in years to come. In January, several months of hard work and planning came to fruition when our board of directors approved a comprehensive, forward-looking strategic plan, (continued on page ten)

In recognition of the Chamber’s 100th anniversary, for this year only, the Annual Dinner will be a black-tie optional gala, including a full evening of cocktails, dinner, dancing and live entertainment. Other special surprises throughout the evening are also planned. At the Gala, the gavel will be passed from outgoing Board Chairman Karen Brenneman, managing partner at Hall, Kistler & Company, to the 2014 Board Chairman, Philip Fracassa, senior vice president – corporate planning and development for The Timken Company. The Chamber will recognize and thank the outgoing board members and usher in new members for our historic 100th year. Of course, the world was a very different place a hundred years ago. In 1914, Woodrow Wilson was President. World War I began in July and the Great War, as it was known, would plague Europe for the next four years. In business circles, Henry Ford made headlines when he announced his eight-hour workday and five dollars for a day’s labor.

In that same historic year, a group of insightful local business leaders founded the Canton Board of Trade, now the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, to support the needs of businesses in our community. H.H. Timken, president of The Timken Roller Bearing Co., served as the Chamber’s first chairman. Fast-forward to today, and you find a thriving regional Chamber that has evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of our 1,600 members and the broader community. Today’s Chamber sponsors over 70 events each year through our focused departments – Advantage Canton, Canton Development Partnership, Canton/Stark County Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, Leadership Stark County, Energy and Public Affairs, Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival, Stark County Safety Council, and ystark! We’re rightfully proud of these quality events, which benefit our local businesses and enhance the quality of life in Canton and Greater Stark County. The Chamber also “employs” over 5,000 volunteers who serve on committees, help at events, and provide additional insight and leadership. Their hours of service each year are absolutely critical to our success. Last year, the Chamber set the stage for continued success when we completed a comprehensive strategic plan. During the process, which involved input from more than 350 community and business leaders, we examined community needs and evaluated every aspect of Chamber operations in light of those needs. Oil & Gas Business Advice by David Kaminski, Director of Energy and Public Affairs Here’s what we say to new members or prospective members who seek advice about the oil and gas business: Network like crazy. Beyond joining the Canton Regional Chamber and paying attention to the oil and gas business education and networking opportunities we provide, here are two specific pieces of advice we give to all comers: Join the Ohio Oil and Gas Association. OOGA membership gives you the opportunity to attend the association’s winter meeting in Columbus, which has drawn about 1,500 people to the Hilton at Easton in the past two years that we have been member participants. Membership also gives you the 678-page OOGA membership directory, which provides names and contacts for most everyone who is serious about the oil and gas business in Ohio. OOGA’s website, with information on memberships and its programs, is www.ooga.org. Attend oil and gas meetings wherever you can afford to do so. One event coming up is the annual Shale Summit sponsored by Crain’s Cleveland Business. Its summit in February 2013 in suburban Cleveland drew 600 people. The speakers were excellent. Those of you who attended in 2013 may remember that we participated in some of the presentations and recruited two local business leaders to appear on panels. We also will have some role in the program at the summit on the 20th. Finally, we at the Chamber have received favorable mention by Crain’s Shale magazine over the past year. However, we would recommend the summit even if we weren’t involved. We have no stake in its success. We just try to help when asked. These points are well rehearsed because in the first few days of the new year, we had meetings with three new members or prospective members located in the Akron and Cleveland suburbs who asked for advice on how to assess their opportunities in oil and gas.

We tell such companies that there are two kinds of businesses that do well in the new oil and gas economy. One kind is the business that has the unbelievable luck of tripping over an unexpected opportunity. They meet people at companies they had never heard of, and they find mutual interests. One thing leads to another, as long as they are willing to invest the time.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Queen Pageant Signals Start of 2014 Celebration! The Pro Football Hall of Fame and the annual Enshrinement Festival will be celebrating 51 years of excellence in 2014, with the first event being the Queen Pageant on May 8. Applications and tickets will be available at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, Enshrinement Festival department, 222 Market Ave. N., in downtown Canton, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Monday, Feb. 10. In addition, applications are available online at www.profootballhofef.com. The deadline to submit the application and a $70 fee is Monday, March 10, by 5 p.m. Candidates cannot be younger than a high school senior and 18 years old by May 1 or more than 23 years of age before Sept. 1. Candidates must reside and, if employed, work within a 30-mile radius of Stark County. While not mandatory, all potential candidates are invited and encouraged to attend the fifth annual “Screen the Queen Pageant” session which will take place Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce from 9 to 11 a.m. This session will help

young ladies decide if they would like to enter the Pageant, and to give them a better idea of what to expect if they do. Participants will have the opportunity to review the 2013 Queen Pageant DVD, learn about the judging experience from past years’ judges, hear from a past queen who will share her memories, and ask questions about the process. The Queen Pageant on Thursday, May 8 will begin at 7 p.m. at The Canton Palace Theatre. At the conclusion of the Pageant, a Queen and court members will have been selected on the basis of personality, poise, beauty, communication skills, academic achievement and service to community. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Message, continued ... which will serve as a guiding document for our organization. This five-year plan will help us begin the next century of Chamber leadership with a compelling vision, unified direction, and measurable goals, and provide a road map to help advance our region’s economic growth and visibility The strategic plan will also steer our organization through the combined challenges and opportunities that surely lie ahead. With the help and input of over 350 participants including our members, government officials, community leaders, Chamber staff, volunteers, and business owners of all sizes, we established six key organizational goals as well as goals for the future: STRATEGIC GOAL A: Advanced Unified Regional Economic Development STRATEGIC GOAL B: Help Employers and Education Institutions to Strengthen Workforce Readiness

We have teams in place for each goal and have already begun rolling out our initial objectives. We have also identified a key internal staff member to “champion” each goal, who will be tasked with working across departments internally, as well as identifying and leveraging partners externally, to help ensure each goal stays on course. Our strategic plan is broad and ambitious. An excellent question was raised during one of the four public sessions: how can the Chamber expect to accomplish these goals with a staff of 48? The simple answer is that we can’t, if we choose to work alone. Thankfully, working in a “silo” has never been our intention. Our plan requires community partners and leaders, both new and old, to join in our effort and help us take our plan beyond words on a page.

Many of you – our members – were part of the strategic planning process, and I want to personally thank you for your participation. To have so many member businesses provide input and feedback at different points throughout the process speaks volumes of your commitment to the Chamber’s work in this region. As we begin 2014, we want to celebrate a remarkable 100 years of Chamber leadership, but also look toward our organization’s future with a fresh perspective and renewed focus. We can’t wait to get started on the many goals, collaborations, and initiatives we have for our membership, Canton/Stark County, and the surrounding region this year and beyond.

LEADERSHIP STARK COUNT Y Leadership Stark County is now accepting applications for the 28th Class of its Signature Program The Signature Program is ideal for business and community leaders who are ready to take their careers to the next level. Each year, selected participants enhance their leadership skills and gain an understanding of local issues, assets, and resources. Your leadership experience begins with an intense two and one-half day Opening Retreat in September that will provide you with an in-depth personal leadership assessment and dynamic workshops. From there you’ll meet once per month to expand your capacity for leadership and service in our community.

Delving into economic development with on-site tours and small-group interaction with CEOs.

Taking a jail tour, meet with local judges, and investigating the justice system on a cruiser ride with sheriff’s deputies and police.

Examining social and economic issues through panel discussions with political and civic leaders.

Role-playing within a poverty simulation and visiting nonprofits to understand their unique concerns.

LEADERSHIP STARK COUNT Y Leadership Stark County Leader Profile: Amanda Walls With Signature Program applications now available, we take this opportunity to introduce 20th Class Signature Program graduate Amanda L. Walls. Amanda is an attorney at Milligan Pusateri Co. LPA and is married to Ryan Walls, of Kenan Advantage Group, who is also a Leadership Stark County graduate from the 15th Class Signature Program. Describe your leadership style: Servant leadership. I’m not comfortable asking others to do something I wouldn’t want to do myself. And I enjoy motivating others with my actions, rather than with words or incentives. Why did you decide participate in the Signature Program? I had many important influencers – family members, mentors, colleagues – around me who had been through the program, enjoyed it, and encouraged me to participate. I was thrilled when the time was right for me to become part of the Leadership Stark County community. What nonprofit organizations do you serve and in what capacity? I am currently president of the board for the Domestic Violence Project, Inc. and vice president of the board for Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps, Inc. I also serve on the board of the North Canton Student Loan Foundation and as a member of the Stark County Bar Association’s Community Service Committee. Provide an example of how your Signature Class training has transferred into your workplace? There is no better way to begin building or boost your professional network than by participating in the Leadership program. From your own classmates to meeting alums from other classes at each program day and other alumni events, I can’t even begin to count the number of times I have called upon a Leadership Stark County friend or classmate to pick their brain, obtain a recommendation, or ask a favor. And I am happy to do the same for those who reach out to me for the same reason.

What issues do you think future leaders should focus on? Collaboration and consolidation. I think it will be increasingly important in all sectors – government, business, education, and non-profit – for leaders to reduce and eliminate duplicative services and to target limited resources and assets for the maximum impact possible. What is your most significant memory from your Signature Program experience? Touring The Timken Company’s Faircrest steel plant as one of the advance site visits for economic development day. I felt like I was in a science fiction movie set! The technology and equipment in that facility is amazing and I gained a new appreciation for my family members who worked in that plant for 20+ years. What would you say to someone considering applying to Leadership Stark County’s Signature Program? Just do it! There is no one in Stark County who would not benefit from being involved in and with Leadership Stark County. How have you remained involved in Leadership Stark County since your graduation? As a representative of some of the organizations for which I serve, I have participated in the Board Matching program for several years. We have met and added some wonderful young board members through the Board Matching event. It’s been a great way to meet new people and find uniquely talented individuals who are passionate about our group’s mission.

Leadership Stark County’s Signature Program is the year-long flagship program that is now in its 28th year. Participants are immersed in a learning experience covering the many facets of Stark County’s economy, education, social services, community assets, legal and government systems, and the arts. Graduates are encouraged to use their experience as a spring-board to community involvement to ensure Stark County’s future success. For more information and to apply, go to our website at www. Wear & Share 2014: It’s wearing ... it’s sharing ... it’s a fashion show and then some! Wear & Share is an original ystark! event that focuses on reusability. The idea was born out of the ystark! Reads Book Club. A few ystark! members read and discussed Annie Leonard’s The Story of Stuff which talks about the movement of reusing instead of buying new stuff. We loved this idea and decided to start it here in Stark County. And with that, Wear & Share was born. On April 22, we recycle Wear & Share for an amazing year two. Name: Valerie Eichler Age: 28 Occupation/Title/Place of work: Account Manager at B-Squared Marketing Solutions Why are you interested in Canton’s Young Professionals initiative? As the future leaders of America, I think it’s important for our generation to become active and engaged in the community at a young age. What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.? I like the variety of events ystark! offers. It’s been a great way to meet other YPs who enjoy the same activities. Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked? I grew up in Hartville. I went to college in Bowling Green and worked in Toledo during that time. I lived in Columbus for a year after college before moving back to the Canton area. This spring, I lived in Paris for 10 weeks, tutoring English.

weather changes that living in northeast Ohio brings. What type of dwelling do you live in? What do you think of the housing choices for YPs in the Canton area? I purchased a house in North Canton in 2011. The low cost of real estate in northeast Ohio is great for YPs like me. It made more financial sense for me to buy than rent. While there are a lot of good apartment options for YPs, I think it’s a great idea to invest in real estate if you can. What do you like MOST about Canton? Our obsession with football. From crowded high school bleachers on Friday nights to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, we absolutely love it. What do you like LEAST about Canton? The decline of the downtown area. While revitalization efforts are in place, we’re not quite there yet. What are the opportunities for YPs in Canton when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? I think getting involved is the most important thing anyone can do. Not only with ystark!, but also community service or religious or arts organizations. A major benefit of our smaller metro area is that less faces at events means you are able to establish closer connections. Hopefully, you’ll use those connections to further the opportunities available to you in the future.

What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton? I like to stay active, so I love heading to one of the Stark Parks for a run or bike ride. What would you change about Canton if you could? I wish we had a major river flowing through the city. To me, nothing is more picturesque than a downtown riverfront area with cafes and boardwalks. Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton? Yes. I wouldn’t be opposed to moving to another state or country for a year or so, but I know I would come back. I think the Canton area is a great place to raise a family. What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why? I would leave Canton to live in a big city for a few years. I love the pedestrian atmosphere of big cities and would like to take advantage of that at some point. I also love to travel, so I think finding a home base in the western United States would allow me to see that part of our country with more ease and less cost.

What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? A vibrant downtown area.

Why have you chosen to live in Canton? I like the small town feel of the Canton area, while still having the benefits of being close to bigger cities. I also enjoy being close to my family and enjoy the

About Our Speakers: Training Specifics (TSI) is based in Hubbard, Ohio, and was started by two police officers who are passionate about their training, and training others. Owners Chris Moffitt and Bob Thompson combined have over 40 years of law enforcement experience and currently hold positions as sergeants and

training officers. They had been training police officers for many years when Chris and Bob realized there was also a need for training civilians. Creating TSI allowed them to share their knowledge as trainers and experienced law enforcement officers. TSI provides self-defense classes for young adults to seniors. Classes range from basic self-defense (90% mental-10% physical), and other non-lethal options up to a variety of firearms training from Ohio Concealed Carry, Basic Firearms, and Advanced Firearms training. TSI also offers classes structured for the LE Officers. As certified A.L.I.C.E. (Alert*Lockdown *Inform*Counter*Evacuate) trainers and Solo Engagement for the Active Killer instructors, Chris and Bob are also dedicated to protecting children in school, along with family and friends in the work place & place of worship.

MEET THE NEW HOF PRESIDENT Meet the New President / Executive Director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame The Canton Regional Chamber is thrilled to welcome David Baker, the new president and executive director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Chamber and the Hall of the Fame have a 50-year history of collaboration and partnership, most notably through the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival, which draws 700,000 people annually. Additionally, the Hall serves as a “landmark” regional asset and national tourism destination. Baker is the sixth president and executive director, succeeding Canton native Steve Perry who retired this year after eight years leading the Hall. Baker brings a distinguished 35-year record of leadership with him to the position. His experience is both broad and deep, having worked in business management/leadership, professional sports and government. Most recently, he worked as a Partner in Union Village, LLC, the world’s first “Integrated Health Village” in Henderson, Nevada. He also spent 12 years as Commissioner of the Arena Football

League (AFL), during which time the league experienced unprecedented growth. Prior to his tenure with AFL, he practiced law in California and served as City Councilman and Mayor of Irvine, California. A distinguished athlete, the 6’9” Baker was captain of the basketball team at the University of California at Irvine and spent two seasons playing professional basketball in Europe.

He also hopes to transform the Hall into a larger campus, with additional meeting facilities, tourism attractions, and overall capital improvements. The Chamber is excited about Baker’s strategic vision for the Hall, as well as our role as a collaborating organization. We assure you that you’ll be hearing much more about Baker and his plans for the Hall of Fame in the months to come.

“I didn’t come here for the weather,” said Baker, jokingly. “I came here for the purpose and the people. Canton and the Pro Football Hall of Fame are synonymous with greatness and synonymous with football.” “The game of football is part of America’s culture. Hard work, teamwork, discipline, excellence, loyalty – these are the values of the game and of this community. I see Canton and the Hall of Fall radiating these values around the country and the world.” As for Baker’s vision for the Hall, he spoke first of letting cameras in for the first time to view the 2014 Enshrinee selection process. He believes this will be an “eyeopening experience” as viewers witness firsthand the level of difficulty and excellence it takes to be enshrined.

A contemporary masterpiece of calligraphy and art, “Illuminating the Word: The Saint John’s Bible” is on exhibit at the Canton Museum of Art until March 2. All 73 books of the Old and New Testaments were produced in seven

volumes of approximately 1,127 pages with 160 illuminations (the pages are nearly 2’ tall x 3’ wide when open) — all using medieval techniques and materials. This is the first touring exhibit of The Saint John’s Bible to feature pages from all seven completed volumes. Malone University has announced that two spring galleries are now open. The Fountain Gallery features Malone students in the fourth annual exhibit of R.S.V.P., a Writing and Visual Art Exchange through Feb. 18. Bridging the gap between the right brain and the left brain, R.S.V.P. involves students, half of whom are visual artists with the other half being writers. Art-in-a-Case is featuring works in calligraphy by native Ohio artist, Sharon Lee Hanse, through March 14. Hanse’s calligraphy illustrates thought provoking and motivational texts using layouts and designs specifically created to enhance the meaning of the words and increase the visual impact. The works exhibited include a wide variety of media including watercolor, acrylics, collage, embossing, gilding, paper cutting, and hand made books. For the second year in a row, Mercy Heart Center has partnered with the American Heart Association to serve as the 2014 local cause partner for the Go Red For Women initiative. Go Red for Women was created 11 years ago (six years locally) to fight heart disease in women through education and research. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, and claims more female lives than all forms of cancer combined. Through this partnership, Mercy Heart Center will be offering many educational programs and events to the community during February (American Heart Month) and throughout 2014. Ralph F.
