MEN’S SOCCER • SEASON PREVIEW Forwards One area where McGrane feels confident in improvement is the team’s offensive output. The Griffs’ feature three forwards in Steele, Gavin Falconer and Asani Samuels that each bring different skill sets to the table and should keep defenses on their heels as the scoring increases. “I feel that we are going to be capable of scoring more goals this year,” McGrane said. “Gavin has improved tremendously and looks sharp. I also think that Asani Samuels – with a year under his belt – is starting to feel more comfortable. Add in Regan and his knowledge of the game and I believe that we will see an increase in goals. “The nice thing about our three forwards is that they are completely different players. They all bring unique elements and are vastly different from each other. Opposing defenses will have a hard time staying set because of our variety up front. I think all of them are a threat in front of goal.” Gavin Falconer • Sr • 15gp, 7 points, 3g, 1a, 34 shots “Gavin is a very smart player,” McGrane said. “He has great movement off the ball and a very good scoring touch. In my time coaching him, he has continued to get better and better.” Regan Steele • Sr • 18gp, 5 points, 2g, 1a, 15 shots “Regan is very good in the air,” McGrane said. “He has a great touch and really has a knack for involving other players in the game.” Asani Samuels • So • 19gp, 3 points, 1g, 1a, 28 shots “Asani has put in a ton of work in the offseason and during the summer,” McGrane said. “He has become more confident in his game and has adjusted to our team’s style of play. Asani is extremely quick and is very athletic. He has now become more confident in front of goal.”

A team captain in 2012, senior Jared Ott is one of the team’s anchor in the midfield. He recorded five points and two goals in 2011.

Midfielders The midfield unit is the Griffs’ deepest position this season, with a total of 12 players manning the middle of the field. The unit’s depth allows McGrane the luxury of playing with the desired up-tempo pace, while featuring a variety of strengths.

A new era of Canisius College men’s soccer was ushered in during the 2011 season. First-year head coach Dermot McGrane led the youngest team in the MAAC – one that featured only one senior and 11 players who made their collegiate debuts and that went through its up and downs, experiencing some growing pains throughout the campaign.

“We’ve got most of our depth in this position,” McGrane said. “We’ll have great competition for starting positions and we’ll be able to attack opponents in a number of different ways. We’re hoping to keep the tempo of the game up because we can use a lot of personnel without weakening our team.”

After gaining valuable experience last season, the challenge for 2012 is to turn those near misses into wins and compete with the best the MAAC has to offer.

Ian Buzzio • Sr • 17gp, 3 shots “We’ve seen a great amount of improvement from Ian in the past year,” McGrane said. “He is a hard worker and should contribute to our team’s success this season.”

“With the team gaining a lot of experience last season, our goal for 2012 is quite simply, to win more games,” McGrane said. “We were competitive last year in every contest. I felt we played well for the most part but we found a way to lose rather than find a way to win.

Brandon Carnovale • Sr “Brandon has tremendous work ethic,” McGrane said. “He is a versatile player and could see time on defense as well.”

“We spent a year developing a winning attitude. We had a very good spring season and now we just need to transfer it to the fall and have consistency in our play. We need to and are capable of turning those close games into wins instead of losses this year.”

Paul Klopfer • Sr • 10gp, 2 shots “Paul has shown tremendous improvement in my time here,” McGrane said. “He should see more minutes this season than he ever has.”

One of the biggest changes this season is the number of leaders that the Griffs can point toward to guide the team to success. One year after listing only one senior on the roster, Canisius now features eight players in their final season of collegiate play. McGrane is hoping that experience, centered around captains Jared Ott and Regan Steele, translates into the desired success.

Jared Ott • Sr • 19gp, 5 points, 2g, 1a, 25 shots “Jared is very comfortable on the ball,” McGrane said. “He is a big, strong player. He is one of our senior leaders this season and one of our more experienced players. We will count on him a lot and he will be a focal point for us in the middle of the field.”

“We only had one senior last year and to be successful at this level, a team needs senior leadership from a number of different voices,” McGrane said. “In the spring, we did a lot of work with our captains – basically teaching them how to be a leader and how to be a captain. So far, they are really stepping up well. That will make a huge difference.”

Will Hudson • Jr • 19gp, 4 points, 1g, 2a, 17 shots “We’ve used Will in a number of different places and we feel that he is best suited to play in the midfield,” McGrane said. “He is very hard working. He is a great defender and does a great job of possessing of the ball.” Zack Schwartz • Jr • 10gp, 2 points, 1g, 6 shots (2010) “Zack is another player that we can use in a number of places and is very versatile,” McGrane said. “He has a tremendous work ethic and should compete for playing time.”

The experience and leadership is now there for the Griffs to succeed and McGrane is expecting that, coupled with a top-rate work ethic, is what takes the Griffs from a number of near misses in 2011 to wins in 2012.

Jon Cary • So • 19gp, 10 shots “Jon is a big athlete and is very good on the ball,” McGrane said. “He has good awareness on the field and is a strong tackler. He can play in the midfield or on defense and will probably see time in both areas.”

“We didn’t score enough goals and we gave up too many last season,” McGrane said. “It is not a winning combination. With the work that we have put in the past year, I can see that trend reversing in 2012. This is the most hard-working team that I have ever had the pleasure to coach. Every day we have stepped on the practice field, the intensity has been tremendous. The players have pushed each other to the limit every single day and I don’t think we’ll see a team during the season that will outwork us.”

Pat Conlon • So • 16gp, 1 shot “Pat has improved a lot in the past year,” McGrane said. “He is good on the ball and definitely has the ability to take defenders on and score goals.”

SEASON PREVIEW • MEN’S SOCCER

A second-year captain, Regan Steele netted two goals to go along with an assist in 2011.

Ryan Schroen looks to anchor the defensive unit in his second collegiate season.

Andrea Conte • So • 16gp, 1a, 5 shots “Andrea is solid technically,” McGrane said. “He is a quick midfielder who is dangerous going toward goal.”

Ryan Arvin posted a 1.36 goals against average in 2011, the fourth-best mark in school history.

A.C. LaFlore • So • 13gp, 1 shot “A.C. is a big, tough competitor,” McGrane said. “He is very good in the air and a very strong tackler. He has improved technically in the past year and is ready to take the next step.”

Derek Maier • So • 18gp, 10 shots “Derek is another attacking midfielder that is very quick,” McGrane said. “He can take on defenders and find the back of the net.”

Ryan Schroen • So • 18gp, 1 shot “Ryan is a tremendous defender and the leader of our back line,” McGrane said. “He reads the game incredibly well and puts himself in a position were he never gets caught out.”

Denver Spearman • So • 19gp, 6 points, 2g, 2a, 39 shots “Denver was the team’s Rookie of the Year last year,” McGrane said. “He has a tireless work rate and is one of the most coachable players you’ll ever find. He continues to improve at each practice and I see him being able to get on the scoresheet for us a lot this year.”

Alex De Carolis • Fr • Sarnia, Ontario “Alex is similar to Andrew Incho on the outside,” McGrane said. “He is a big and quick attacking left back. He likes to get in the attack immediately and has the work rate to get back defensively and not get caught out of position.”

Chris Berardi • Fr • Clarence, N.Y. “Chris has a great understanding of the game and has great speed,” McGrane said. “He is very good moving forward and taking defenders on.”

Goalkeepers The goaltending position is another unit that the Griffs have the luxury of a number of capable starters. Canisius features four goaltenders who can anchor the defensive unit and lead the team to success.

Defenders Experience is the key for the defense in 2012. The team’s youngest position in 2011, the Griffs’ defensive unit looks to take the next step by limiting their mistakes.

“We are in the fortunate position of having four very good goalkeepers and it could be the most intense battle for playing time on our team,” McGrane said. “At this point, our staff is keeping an open mind on who is going to be the number one. We are using the three weeks of preseason and the first few games of the year to figure out who is the best guy for the job and who gives us the best chances for success.”

“A lot of the goals that we gave up last year were mental mistakes on our part,” McGrane said. “With more experience on the back line, we expect to have fewer mental mistakes that resulted in goals being put past us.” Leading the way is the sophomore duo of A.C. LaFlore and Ryan Schroen, who will anchor the unit as center backs. Having spent their first season at Canisius building a strong connection, McGrane is looking to build on that to provide a solid foundation.

Senior Kareem Gray and junior Ryan Arvin split time as the team’s last line of defense in 2011, while sophomores Eric DeHond and Reiner Dollak will also compete for playing time.

“Ryan and A.C. formed a good partnership last season and that year of experience will go a long way this year,” McGrane said. “In preseason, they are already starting to stand out a little more and take charge of the defense.”

Kareem Gray • Sr • 11gp, 2.15 gaa, .667 sv pct. “Kareem has very good size and is a great shot stopper,” McGrane said. “He communicates well to his defense and has good distribution.”

Andrew Incho • Sr • 18gp, 2 points, 1g, 10 shots “Andrew is excelling in his new position of right back,” McGrane said. “We recognized his athleticism and thought he would prove more valuable on defense. He is great in the air and reads the game well. His movement off the ball is good and when we tried him in the back, it was perfect.”

Ryan Arvin • Jr • 10gp, 1.36 gaa, .745 sv pct. “What he lacks in size, Ryan makes up in aggression,” McGrane said. “He has a great understanding of the game, has very good footwork and is a really good shot stopper.” Reiner Dollak • So “Reiner has improved a lot in the year he has been here,” McGrane said. “He has the ability to do all facets of the position well but still needs to develop some more consistency.”

Paul Dhaliwal • Jr “Paul can fill in either at center or left back,” McGrane said. “He is a versatile player and will compete for playing time this season.”

Eric DeHond • So • 1.07 gaa, .838 sv pct. (Houghton College) “Eric has very good size for a goalkeeper and is also a very good shot stopper,” McGrane said. “He gets a lot of distance from kicks and is very comfortable in crosses. The more he is getting used to the players in front of him, the more comfortable he is looking.”

Justin Montero • Jr • 14gp, 2 points, 1g, 7 shots (2010) “Justin is another versatile player that will see action as a center or right back and can also prove to be valuable in the midfield,” McGrane said. “He gives us a lot of options and will fight for increased minutes.”

MEN’S SOCCER • HEAD COACH

Dermot McGrane Second Season Elmira ‘94 One of the most successful head coaches in the MAAC, Dermot McGrane became the 14th coach of Canisius College men’s soccer program on Jan. 21, 2011. Now in his second season leading the Golden Griffins, the twotime MAAC Coach of the Year spent the previous nine years turning Niagara University into one of the top programs in the league. The winningest head coach in Purple Eagles history, McGrane took the Niagara program to new heights during his tenure. He inherited a team that won only 27 games in the 11 seasons prior to his arrival and then took the Purple Eagles to six MAAC Championship Tournament appearances, including the program’s first title game in 2009. Overall, McGrane led Niagara to 61 wins in his nine seasons, including 39 conference victories and seven seasons of at least a .500 winning percentage versus MAAC foes. His success with the Purple Eagles did not gone unnoticed by his peers. McGrane earned MAAC Coach of the Year accolades in back-to-back seasons following the 2005 and 2006 campaigns. His 2008 team also spent the entire season ranked in the top four of the North Atlantic Region and received votes in the national poll in numerous weeks. McGrane’s 2006 and 2008 teams also finished the year ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring offense. Under his leadership, McGrane guided a number of players to individual success. McGrane coached and recruited two MAAC Players of the Year, one MAAC Rookie of the Year, 15 regional All-Americans plus 25 all-conference student-athletes at Niagara. Performance away from the soccer pitch has been just as important during his tenure. His team posted a GPA of 3.0 or higher every season and McGrane mentored 60 MAAC All-Academic selections in addition to 10 NSCAA Scholar-Athletes. Prior to his time at Niagara, McGrane spent five seasons as the top assistant coach at Coastal Carolina University. With the Chanticleers, McGrane helped build the program into a perennial power. He recruited three players drafted into the MLS, including the third overall selection in 2003, and six All-Americans. Coastal Carolina captured three Big South Championships and one NCAA Tournament appearance during McGrane’s term. McGrane’s first collegiate coaching position was as an assistant coach at Western Kentucky from 1995 to 1997. He helped the Hilltoppers to their first Sun Belt Conference Championship in 1995. McGrane has also held coaching positions on the Region III staff for the United States Olympic Development Program from 2000 to 2002 and as the head coach of South Carolina for the U.S. ODP from 1997 to 2002. A native of Leicester, England, McGrane holds his “A” license from the USSF and his Advanced National Diploma from the NSCAA. McGrane played four seasons at Elmira College, earning NCAA All-North Region honors, the Elmira College Booster Club MVP and the school’s Male Athlete of the Year accolades. A 1994 graduate of Elmira College, McGrane received his bachelor’s degree in psychology. He also earned his master’s in recreation management from Western Kentucky in 1997. McGrane and his wife, Patricia, reside in Niagara Falls with their 12-year old daughter, Ciara.

ASST COACHES • MEN’S SOCCER

Kevin Brenner Assistant Coach Second Season Buffalo State ‘04 Kevin Brenner is in his second season with the Golden Griffin men’s soccer program, serving as an assistant coach with the team. “I have known Kevin for a number of years and I’m excited about having him be a part of our staff,” said Canisius head coach Dermot McGrane. “Kevin is a tireless recruiter and is passionate about the game of soccer. He brings a wealth of experience with him and will a valuable asset to our program as we turn Canisius into a championship-winning team.” Brenner also serves as the head coach with Empire Buffalo, which is a member of the US Soccer Developmental Academy and participates in the US Soccer Region 1 League. In addition, he served as the scouting director and was a reserve player of the Queen City Football Club of the NPSL from 2006 to 2008.

Brenner joined Canisius after spending six seasons as an assistant coach with Buffalo State, helping lead the program to its highest winning percentage in 23 years. With the Bengals, Brenner assisted with the day-to-day operations of the program and training sessions, while serving as the team’s recruiting coordinator from 2007 to 2010.

A member of the NSCAA, Brenner holds a USSF National D license, while completing his NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma and his NSCAA National Diploma.

A two-year captain at Buffalo State, Brenner led the Bengals to a regional ranking of fourth during his senior campaign and an 11-5-2 record, the team’s best mark in 20 seasons. He finished the campaign ranked third on the team in points and led the Bengals in game-winning tallies.

A native of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Brenner captained the Hornets during his high school career and is a two-time All-Champlain Valley First Team selection. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business management with a minor in business economics from Buffalo State in 2004 and is currently pursuing his master’s in applied economics and finance.

During his tenure with the Warriors, Oduro helped the team capture its first CACC Championship in 2009, while also mentoring three All-Americans. Oduro was a member of the Purple Eagles from 2004 to 2006, helping Niagara earn back-to-back MAAC Tournament bids for the first time in the program’s history during his junior and senior campaigns. In 2006, Oduro captained the Purple Eagles to one of the most successful seasons in school history. Department of Athletics What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s illfated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”

2012 Canisius Female Athlete of the Year Megan Oosting earned MAAC Midfielder of the Year honors in addition to regional All-America accolades. Male Athlete of the Year Shawn Parkhurst repeated as the MAAC champion in the 1,000 freestyle, while setting seven school records.

Bill Maher Director of Athletics Named Director of Athletics in May 2005, Bill Maher is in his eighth year back in the Blue and Gold. Under Maher’s watch, the Golden Griffins have enjoyed unprecedented success. In his seven seasons, Canisius teams have advanced to eight NCAA Tournaments in addition to a WNIT appearance in 2009, marking the most successful seven-year run in the school’s history. Most recently, the Canisius lacrosse programs enjoyed the most successful year in conference history with both the men’s and women’s teams winning MAAC Championships in 2012 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. It marked the first time that one school swept both titles in the same season. In addition, the synchronized swimming team continued their dominance during the 2011-12 season, winning the program’s 15th-straight ECAC Championship. Overall, the 17 Canisius squads have accumulated 29 conference or regional championships under Maher’s leadership, with a number of teams producing the best seasons in program history. The Canisius campus has also undergone a number of renovations, including upgrades to the Demske Sports Complex and Koessler Athletic Center. During the past seven seasons, 34 student-athletes have won conference player or rookie of the year awards, including six in each of the past two seasons. Prior to Maher’s arrival, Canisius won 24 player or rookie of the year awards in the previous 10 seasons combined. The achievements of Griffs go past graduation as well. Under Maher’s watch, 13 players have been drafted professionally. In 2011, Canisius was the only school in the country with two first-round selections in the National Lacrosse League Draft. In addition, former Griff John Axford pitches with the Milwaukee Brewers, while two hockey graduates have signed NHL contracts. To go along with the school’s success on a team and individual level, Canisius has controlled the Battle of the Bridge series with local rival Niagara University. In four of the last five campaigns, the Griffs have claimed the Canal Cup, which is an all-sports competition between the two neighboring schools. On an academic level during Maher’s tenure, Canisius has had 21 student-athletes recognized on the district level as Capital One CoSIDA All-Academic selections, including seven Capital One Academic All-Americans during the last three years. Maher has overseen numerous renovations to the Koessler Athletic Center and the Demske Sports Complex. A new Center for Athletic Training opened in May 2007. New locker rooms were constructed for all female teams and finished in

2008, while the men and women’s basketball teams each received new locker rooms in the summer of 2008. The Demske Sports Complex received a $1.7 million facelift with the installation of new A-Turf as well as new scoreboards in 2008. New offices for head coaches and their assistants along with new locker rooms for all of the men’s teams were constructed in 2010. GoGriffs.com, the official web site of Canisius athletics, has undergone two redesigns under Maher. The department has also developed a video webstreaming package for all home events in seven sports (men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s lacrosse) and is a part of the MAAC.TV package. Maher is the MAAC’s representative to the NCAA Legislative Council, which has one representative from each of the 31 Division I conferences. He chairs the MAAC men’s lacrosse committee and is also a member of the MAAC Technology Committee. He also oversaw the development of the men’s basketball program, which set a school record for victories and earned the first postseason bid in school history with an invitation to the 2005 National Invitation Tournament. Under his watch, the Bulls’ RPI increased from 284 in 2003 to as high as 34 during the 2004-05 season. Maher was a four-year letterwinner on the Canisius College football team from 1985-88 and earned All-America honorable mention honors as a senior. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Canisius in 1989 and his master’s degree in sport management from East Stroudsburg University in 1990. Following an internship with the New York Knicks, Maher returned to Canisius in 1991, becoming the assistant athletic director for compliance in 1994.
