VOLLEYBALL • SEASON PREVIEW

In recent years, the strength of the Canisius College volleyball team has been up the middle of the court. With the addition of seven newcomers in 2012 to replace four graduated seniors from last year’s team, that hasn’t changed. But the support around those middle hitters appears to have increased and the ability on the back row has improved as well. The 2012 edition of the Golden Griffins start their schedule this weekend at the UB Invitational. Canisius ended the 2011 season by winning six straight matches (all in three sets), to make a late push for the fourth and final spot in the MAAC Championship. It was the fourth time in the

at a time,” 12th-year head coach Cathy Hummel said. “We have a difficult non-conference schedule. We can’t find ourselves getting caught up in wins and losses and need to stay in the process so we don’t lose sight of where we want to go heading into conference play.”

in the conference with a .285 attack percentage in league play. Hernandez averaged 2.00 kills per set and had a .353 attack percentage in her last 11 appearances. “The strength up the middle is still our identity, but because we have such depth and ability surrounding them, they may see a higher percentage of success in their attacks but not get as many attempts in an actual match,” Hummel said. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see other teams key on them, but I think there should be less pressure should be on the middles to carry the offense because of the support around them.”

While it’s easy to see the strength of the team up the middle of the court, the additions have forced Hummel and her staff to change their philosophy and try to match the personnel to the best system possible. “It hasn’t just been an adjustment for the seven newcomers but we all have adjusted because we have changed what we are doing system wise,” Hummel said. “We have increased our ball control and aren’t going to live and die with our hitting and blocking as much as we have in previous years. Our back row defense should be better than it has been, which should give our hitters more opportunities.

Joining that duo will be two freshmen in Amy Osinski and Lauren Siebert. Osinski, who played on the same club team (VolleyFX) as Good, is a 6-foot middle hitter from Pittsford, N.Y. She was a two-time First-Team All-County selection as well as a two-time team captain. Siebert is a 5-foot-10 middle hitter from Orefield, Pa. She was part of a state championship team during her senior season, two district championship teams and three conference championship squads.

“We have challenged all 14 players and three coaches with some new tactics. The personality and work ethic of the squad has been set since day one, and they are pushing in the same direction.”

Junior Roxanne Hernandez last six years the Griffs played in the postseason, but they are still in search of their first conference championship. “Those six wins recommitted us to being process oriented. Even when our backs were against the wall, we took it one match

MIDDLE HITTERS Canisius had two middle hitters rank in the top 10 of the conference in attack percentage last season and add a number of options to complement senior Samantha Good and junior Roxanne Hernandez. Earlier this month, Good became the second player in program history to be named to the preseason All-MAAC Team three times. The Rochester, N.Y. native and 2010 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, Good led the team with a .294 attack percentage in 2011 and ranked fourth in the conference in the category en route to being named to the All-MAAC Second Team. Hernandez ranked ninth in the MAAC with a .258 attack percentage and was sixth

OUTSIDE HITTERS Canisius will have to replace the production of outside hitter Danielle Brawn, who posted the best season of her career as a senior in 2011. Brawn earned All-MAAC Second-Team honors after leading the team and ranking fourth in the conference at 3.53 kills per set. Canisius has a number of returning options in juniors Emily Elek and Jessica Warner along with sophomore Olivia Chrzanowski. Elek appeared in 29 matches last season, totaling double-digit kills 10 times. The junior averaged 2.53 kills per set and had a .341 attack percentage in the final five matches, including 10 kills and a .421 attack percentage in

the MAAC semifinals against Niagara. Warner had some impressive performances throughout her sophomore season. The Lancaster, N.Y. native set a career high with eight blocks against Fairfield, the most blocks by a Golden Griffin in a match in

Junior Emily Elek 2011. Warner had a career-high 12 kills against Kent State and posted a 95.1 service reception percentage in her last 12 appearances. Chrzanowski started 16 of the final 17 matches of her freshman season, recording seven kills nine times in the last 18 matches. The sophomore had a careerhigh 16 kills in the four-set win over Buffalo and had a 93.9 service reception percentage during the final 18 matches. Fifth-year senior Logan Sulongga joins the Griffs for her final season of eligibility after playing three seasons at Murray State University. The 6-foot-1 native of China earned All-Ohio Valley Conference Second Team honors

her first two seasons, posting a career-high 36 assists in her first career match. Streicher was a three-time FirstTeam All-South Jersey selection, totaling 402 assists and 65 aces during her senior season.

SCHEDULE Canisius spends the first three weeks of the season on the road in non-conference games, starting with this weekend’s UB Invitational. The Griffs open with the rival University at Buffalo before facing two challenging teams in Oral Roberts and San Jose State. Canisius then heads to Charleston Southern for four games and then to Rhode Island for three matches, including one against Seton Hall.

“The two of them are understanding the burden isn’t going to fall on one person’s shoulders,” Hummel said. “It is a long season and collectively they will lead the team throughout the year. They are on the same page with the two of them being able to contribute to the one spot.” Junior Jessica Warner in 2008. She averaged 2.60 kills per set during the 2010 season and had 799 kills in 85 career matches. Freshman Rachel Kline also joins the Canisius front row after playing four years at Central Valley High School in Pennsylvania. Kline earned AllState honors each of the last two seasons and was MVP of an AllStar Game between players from Pennsylvania and Ohio. “For all of our pin hitters, we are running a quicker offense than we ever have, which does raise the risk a little bit,” Hummel said. “For the outside hitters to contribute to relieve the pressure from the middles, they have to be ready to keep up with the increased pace of our offense.” SETTERS/LIBEROS The most difficult position to replace for the Griffs will be the setter spot as Canisius graduated four-year starter Janelle Davis, who averaged a career-high 9.36 assists per game to go along with a .439 attack percentage on just over a kill per set. The setter position has two options in junior Sydney Palka and freshman Grace Streicher. Palka has played in 50 matches during

“It is going to be one of the most challenging non-conference schedules we have had in terms of competition, especially that first weekend,” Hummel said. “With 14 kids and seven newcomers, we can challenge a lot more people against the highest level we have seen.”

At the libero spot, senior Allyson Severyn returns for her fourth year as the starter for the Griffs in the different-color jersey. The 5-foot-7, Lancaster, N.Y. native has led the team in digs in each of her first three seasons and enters the 2012 campaign needing 442 digs to become the program’s all-time leader. The 2010 MAAC Libero of the Year has 10-plus digs in 81 career matches and had a career-best .965 service reception percentage as a junior.

Canisius opens the conference schedule at Marist and Siena on Sept. 15-16 before heading home to host Loyola and Rider on Sept. 22-23. After a trip to New York City for the Saint Peter’sManhattan weekend, the Griffs then have seven of their next 10 games at home, starting with three-time defending league champion Niagara on Oct. 6. “We are on the road for the non-conference schedule and for the first MAAC weekend. By that time, we should be comfortable with playing in a new gym and

Canisius was picked fifth in the preseason MAAC coaches’ poll, behind Fairfield, Niagara, Manhattan and Siena. Including Iona, the top six teams of the conference look very tight and it should be a battle throughout the final weeks of the season for the last two spots in the conference tournament (Nov. 17-18 at Fairfield University).

The Griffs have two other options on the back row in sophomore transfer Emily Litwin and freshman Jordan Tylec. After playing her first season at Binghamton, Litwin comes to Canisius after appearing in 30 matches as a freshman with the Bearcats and averaging 1.63 digs per set. Tylec played setter at North Tonawanda and was the team MVP for the Lady Jacks.

“Inevitably the top two teams separate themselves the first time around in the round-robin schedule and then the three through six spots are a battle until the last matches on the last weekend,” Hummel said. “That top six of the conference can beat each other or lose to each other at any time, showing how the conference has gotten stronger and deeper.”

“We have one of the top liberos in the conference and another one who is just as good in Emily Litwin,” Hummel said. “We are digging more balls defensively and giving ourselves more opportunities offensively.”

5

Junior Sydney Palka ready to face talented league opponents,” Hummel said. “Then in October, we get a lot of matches in our gym and face our rival twice in a span of 12 days. “It will be a battle throughout MAAC play. Hopefully we can stay in the process and come the month of November have given ourselves a chance to win our first conference championship.”

Department of Athletics What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s illfated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”

2012 Canisius Female Athlete of the Year Megan Oosting earned MAAC Midfielder of the Year honors in addition to regional All-America accolades. Male Athlete of the Year Shawn Parkhurst repeated as the MAAC champion in the 1,000 freestyle, while setting seven school records.

Dr. Ellen Conley Vice President for Student Affairs Ellen O. Conley, PhD, a member of the Canisius Community since 1970, was named vice president for student affairs in 1998. One of her many accomplishments in her role as vice president includes spearheading the upgrade of the athletics program at the college. Dr. Conley earned a bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock State College (1967), advanced education degrees from the University of Pittsburgh (1968) and Buffalo State (1973) and a doctorate in higher education from the University at Buffalo (1981). During her tenure as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Conley supported the formation of the School of Education and Human Services, developed a mentoring program for new faculty, initiated the development of majors in criminal justice and environmental science and guided the initiative to implement a Master of Science in Organizational Communication and Development. She also established the Fine Arts Department and facilitated the development of MusiCanisius, which has since evolved into the ArtsCanisius program.

While acting dean, she coordinated the promotion of the school’s graduate education program to the Canadian market and guided the implementation of the Master in Sport Administration. From 1987-89, Dr. Conley was the assistant director of athletics for women’s sports and financial aid, and from 1987-90, she was the athletic scholarship coordinator. Under her direction, the women’s athletic program was formed and grew from one club level team to seven varsity teams. In addition, she implemented and monitored an athletic scholarship program for men’s and women’s non-revenue producing sports. From 1982-1990 Dr. Conley served as chair of the undergraduate Physical Education Major Program and Coordinator of the Physical Education Graduate Program. In 1989, she developed alternative curricular tracks for physical education majors to enhance enrollment, and in 1986, she co-wrote the New York State Professional Preparation Council’s position paper for “Strengthening Teaching in New York State.”

Bill Maher Director of Athletics Named Director of Athletics in May 2005, Bill Maher is in his eighth year back in the Blue and Gold. Under Maher’s watch, the Golden Griffins have enjoyed unprecedented success. In his seven seasons, Canisius teams have advanced to eight NCAA Tournaments in addition to a WNIT appearance in 2009, marking the most successful seven-year run in the school’s history. Most recently, the Canisius lacrosse programs enjoyed the most successful year in conference history with both the men’s and women’s teams winning MAAC Championships in 2012 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. It marked the first time that one school swept both titles in the same season. In addition, the synchronized swimming team continued their dominance during the 2011-12 season, winning the program’s 15th-straight ECAC Championship. Overall, the 17 Canisius squads have accumulated 29 conference or regional championships under Maher’s leadership, with a number of teams producing the best seasons in program history. The Canisius campus has also undergone a number of renovations, including upgrades to the Demske Sports Complex and Koessler Athletic Center. During the past seven seasons, 34 student-athletes have won conference player or rookie of the year awards, including six in each of the past two seasons. Prior to Maher’s arrival, Canisius won 24 player or rookie of the year awards in the previous 10 seasons combined. The achievements of Griffs go past graduation as well. Under Maher’s watch, 13 players have been drafted professionally. In 2011, Canisius was the only school in the country with two first-round selections in the National Lacrosse League Draft. In addition, former Griff John Axford pitches with the Milwaukee Brewers, while two hockey graduates have signed NHL contracts. To go along with the school’s success on a team and individual level, Canisius has controlled the Battle of the Bridge series with local rival Niagara University. In four of the last five campaigns, the Griffs have claimed the Canal Cup, which is an all-sports competition between the two neighboring schools. On an academic level during Maher’s tenure, Canisius has had 21 student-athletes recognized on the district level as Capital One CoSIDA All-Academic selections, including seven Capital One Academic All-Americans during the last three years. Maher has overseen numerous renovations to the Koessler Athletic Center and the Demske Sports Complex. A new Center for Athletic Training opened in May 2007. New locker rooms were constructed for all female teams and finished in

2008, while the men and women’s basketball teams each received new locker rooms in the summer of 2008. The Demske Sports Complex received a $1.7 million facelift with the installation of new A-Turf as well as new scoreboards in 2008. New offices for head coaches and their assistants along with new locker rooms for all of the men’s teams were constructed in 2010. GoGriffs.com, the official web site of Canisius athletics, has undergone two redesigns under Maher. The department has also developed a video webstreaming package for all home events in seven sports (men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s lacrosse) and is a part of the MAAC.TV package. Maher is the MAAC’s representative to the NCAA Legislative Council, which has one representative from each of the 31 Division I conferences. He chairs the MAAC men’s lacrosse committee and is also a member of the MAAC Technology Committee. Canisius has hosted eight MAAC Championships since 2005 and will also be hosting the 2013 Swimming and Diving Championships and the 2013 Women’s Lacrosse Championship. A Canisius graduate and former assistant athletic director at the school, Maher spent seven years at the University at Buffalo and served as the Bulls’ interim athletic director from 2003-05. During his tenure as the interim athletic director at Buffalo, Maher helped UB Athletics oversee $3.6 million in capital improvements to its athletic facilities, restructure the school’s Blue & White Club fund drive for athletics, which generated $1 million during the 2003-04 season, and develop marketing campaigns which increased attendance at athletic events. He also oversaw the development of the men’s basketball program, which set a school record for victories and earned the first postseason bid in school history with an invitation to the 2005 National Invitation Tournament. Under his watch, the Bulls’ RPI increased from 284 in 2003 to as high as 34 during the 2004-05 season. Maher was a four-year letterwinner on the Canisius College football team from 1985-88 and earned All-America honorable mention honors as a senior. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Canisius in 1989 and his master’s degree in sport management from East Stroudsburg University in 1990. Following an internship with the New York Knicks, Maher returned to Canisius in 1991, becoming the assistant athletic director for compliance in 1994. He became the director of compliance at the University at Buffalo in 1998, where he moved up the ranks and was named senior associate athletic director in 2002. In that role, he managed the day-to-day operations of the Division of Athletics, including the direct supervision of Buffalo’s football and men’s and women’s basketball programs, in addition to the office of compliance and the office of student-athlete services. Maher resides in East Amherst with his wife, Kristin, and sons, Danny and David.
